La Carreta is the best local mexican restaurant - hands down. They have great drinks, great food, good portions and reasonable prices.
There is also something special here at the Derry location: The Enchiladas Suizas. Enchiladas Suizas are exclusive to this location because of ownership. Cheese enchiladas topped with green sauce and spiced pork. You cannot get them at any other location and they are best item on the menu.
When my wife and I go with our 13 month old daughter, she enjoys herself and usually dogs a whole cheese quesadilla from the kids' menu.
La Carreta ranks as #3 of my top 3 local restaurants, with KCs Rib Shack as #2 and Gaucho's Brazilian Steakhouse as #1.

I have been hearing great things about La Carreta from friends, so I was eagerly awaiting the time I would finally try it. Perhaps the other locations are what my friends were talking about. I thought the food was good, not great: Chimichangas and chicken tacos were what my husband and I ordered. My husband was impressed, because I actually ate tacos that had steamed onions mixed in with the meat (being the onion hater that I am). BEWARE of the plates when they serve you...wayyyy too hot! It was like they came straight from the oven or something. Serving dishes hot is one thing, but these were scorching. My hard taco shells ended up becoming soggy because of the hot plate.
Margaritas were really good, but wasn't too happy when the waitress brought over our check without even asking if we wanted dessert/additional drinks. She had to re-print our check just so we could get 2 more drinks.
I would probably go here again because everything tasted good and service wasn't too bad, but I prefer Margarita's Restaurant over this one. I can understand what other reviewers mean by the waitstaff being inattentive. Regardless of where you sit in the place, all of the employees should be attentive. -

Pros: Atmosphere, strong drinks and nice enough wait staff.
Cons: I think they use cat food instead of beef and although the drink was strong it was a poor tasting margarita for a Mexican joint.
The food was all just big piles of moosh...and how does that much water come out of a taco? What's the water from?
Enchiladas and quesadilla tasted exactly alike.
Overall: Gross. I won't be going back there. -

I like my food well seasoned, not over salted! My husband and I ordered some food last night and both our dinners were over salted. Mine was probably the worst of the two. Otherwise the flavors were decent, sauces were not bad and the meat was juicy. But being that both dinners were too salty, I'm not sure I'd risk going back again.

I love this place. It is reasonably priced and a great place to gather with friends and have a margarita. I would recommend the chicken nachos.

La Carreta has great food and a great bar.
Stay away if you have a large group of people. The owner's have no desire to please a large group of people with separate checks. They simply refuse! Then when the bills comes, it is itemized with FOOD, DRINK and a price. They don't even provide you with an easy way to break up the bill.
So now everyone is stands around... I had 2 drinks...no you had 4 drinks...on and on and on. A nice way to ruin a good night!!!
Some people think, just split the bill. That does not work when one couple didn't eat and just drank. Their bill was almost $100 and someone elses bill was $15.
The owner really need to remember to listen to the needs and want of the customer. Our group of 20 will only go back if we can have separate checks. -

Okay, I have decided to create a 2 part review (think of this as a special edition if you need to). Please read the portion that applies most to you:
***Part 1***this applies to anyone that lives in the area or at least not anywhere near a plentitude of real mexican restaurants exists*
Hooray! By the pure and simple fact that you've yelped this restaurant means that you are either considering going there or have been there! Don't get me wrong, I thought of starting this review as "Have you ever heard of a Mexican restaurant that can't make nachos?", but everything else I've had off the menu has been pretty good (High five to the Fish Tacos! I would suggest asking for a couple of lime slices to squeeze over on the side though).
I have to say what really keeps me going back is the servers there as they are all so friendly. One of our regular waitors (I'm awful with names, but seriously no-we actually don't go that often) always remembers my husband and I and always remembers what we like to order (he even jokingly wrote down the fish tacos and enchiladas super rancheras on his pad before we ordered so that as soon as we said it, he showed us. Points earned with me on the happy checklist!). I happen to be more of a mojito girl, but any beverage of choice you order will be guarenteed to make you happy. Oh, and anythig you order will be out to you in the blink of an eye.
***Part 2***this applies to anyone that lives in a state where real authentic Mexican food a readily available, such as California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, etc*
You need to keep in mind where you are: DERRY NH! Besides this place, do you even know what we have for Mexican? Pretty much Taco Bell......So please chug down that delicious 32oz margarita first and your dinner will be sure to taste just fine! -

I grew up in Texas so, needless to say, Mexican food is something I know really well. The decor here is fine but not authentic, but that's okay. The food was fine. I loved the salsa and ordered a taco and enchilada plate. The enchilada was fine and the taco was okay but the ground beef tasted off. The service was great and the prices were decent but not exactly a deal at lunch time. There aren't many great Mexican places in NH so it's nice I found a decent place in the area.

Having been here at least a half dozen times, I've found the food to be consistently satisfying and the service generally quite attentive. The menu is expansive, offering enough variety to satisfy just about any diner. I've never left La Caretta hungry thanks to their extremely generous portions, exacerbated by the endless supply of tortilla chips and salsa provided from the moment one is seated.
A full bar with numerous HDTVs is separated from the larger dining room, isolating the sound from each area sufficiently enough that patrons in one section won't generally bother those in the other.
During my last visit, our ever-expanding party was accommodated with ease, our waitress going so far as to commandeer the tables from an entire section so that our group could surround two large tables. Even as our numbers swelled near to 25, the waitstaff performed admirably and never seemed challenged by the size of our party. -

This place is probably the best Mexican you'll find in the proximity of Derry, NH. In my opinion, it far surpasses Margaritas. In response to some of the reviewers who complain about the poor service, I recommend sitting in the bar area. The bar staff are much more attentive. I love the Grande Burrito, and the espinaca dip is to die for!

Um... FAIL.
Bottled salsa, store-bought chips w/ no salt or flavor. Cheese tasted a bit off - like it was processed, and the enchilada sauce was brown and tasted like it came from a can. I know I shouldn't compare to the good stuff I'm used to in Cali, and I know I shouldn't expect good mexican food around here, but come on...
The only saving grace was the service, which was lightning fast. Got me the heck outta there. Sorry La Carreta. -

I LOVE this new Mexican restaurant. I have made it officially my local hang out. I have made it an effort to try the entire menu and I have not been dissatisfied. Everything is fresh and seasoned perfectly. The Colorado Pork RULES!! The best I have ever had.
Emily is our usual waitress and is the BOMB! She gives us special treatment and she is very social and friendly. She remembers our names, and is always happy to see us. I therefore I tip more because she is a hot ticket and is accommodating.
At La Carrata, I like the ambiance, the tiles, and Mexican murals. The bar has like over 30 brands of tequilas, which I have only sampled few. The hot tortilla chips come out as soon as you are seated. I add salt to them. The salsa is just hot enough...but no too hot. I like that the salsa is in small little wine carafes.

Yay, I love this place. It is the same food as the La Carreta in Nashua (although I believe the salsa is better here), but there is less of a wait and overall I feel that this restaurant is more aesthetically pleasing. The bar area is bigger as well.
Since I'm a wuss, I always get a Vegetarian combo or chicken/beef combo. I love the beans and rice here-- simple, yet correctly seasoned. Enchiladas and tostadas are always delicious.
If you are a cheapo like me, listen up.....Sometimes you can find coupons in the paper for this location for buy one get one free or 50% off the 2nd meal or whatever. Also, they have a lunch special menu that works on Saturdays too, so you can save a few bucks off your lunch and then convert those savings into lunchtime beers or margaritas. Wooo!Listed in: Try-N-Save

Derry, NH
Good food, not pricey at all. The margarita's are standard but sometimes they make a good one. Really nice selection on Tequilla. For a decent meal and good time you cant go wrong. Try the fajitas there great. Also the mole sauce tastes pretty authentic. So seeing as how we are in Derry NH we are very fortunate to have a nice mexican resturant here. Things could be a lot worse.

Derry, NH
I've never had a bad meal here, although not one plate really stands out as a "must order" to me. I do love the salsa, and the waitstaff is very generous with keeping it refilled. It has the perfect amount of heat. I have been eating lunch at this location on a fairly regular basis for a few years now with a friend who just loves it and craves it all the time. Lunch service is speedy, and we are always seated immediately. I guess my biggest issue with this restaurant is that every dish starts to taste the same after a while...just not enough variety of flavor between the menu options. All-in-all, a consistently good place to dine, but it is lacking the "wow" factor.

Review from Brian D.
Manchester, NH
This place used to be a solid 3* -- not really authentic mexican, but pretty decent by NH standards (sadly).
It has since deteriorated sharply. Part of the issue is poor service, exacerbated by a language barrier between staff and English speaking customers, certainly. I dined here this evening and:
1) My Appetizer (which I specifically requested come first, given past experience here) was served simultaneously with the meal.
2) The Meal itself consisted of an overcooked dried out chicken with far-too old tortillas and a relatively bland "ranchero" sauce. Served with dried out rice and beans that tasted off in an indistinguishable way -- probably having been left out for too long. It was relatively unenjoyable.
3) When it came time to pay, I used a gift certificate for $25 + a $20 to cover the modest bill ($27.50), and the check came back with a gift certificate for $17.50 rather than my change. This issue required escalation to the manager to resolve after the front desk staff was unhelpful and my server was nowhere to be found.
Overall, this is a poorly managed establishment, and I will never return. -

I only get the fajitas and stay away from the chips and all the fried foods and combos. The fajitas are OK. The margaritas are good! Service is fast and efficient.

Good food, great atmosphere. I'd rate them better if they had more for the kids to choose from, and weren't so expensive.

Sandown, NH
We got here every now and then. My wife loves the drinks here, I love the bean dip. The salsa is great also. The problem is the meals all taste the same. No matter what you get it tastes the same. The reason is every dish has a sauce dripped over it which overpowers what you are eating. The food does come out lightning fast and the place is nice and clean inside. I just wish the food had more of a taste variety.

Complimentary homemade salsa and fresh made hot tortilla chips will start you off. I recommend the Chile Rellenos and the enchiladas with mole sauce but I have never had anything bad here so get whatever your favorite is!
