I love coming here when I am in the mood for some yummy Mexican food. Although I have to be honest, I order the same thing every time and probably wouldn't order anything else.
The first time I went, I had the jalapeno peppers appetizer and it was terrible. Like the frozen ones at the supermarket. But really, with the delicious chips and salsa, you don't need to order an appetizer. Just get a giant frozen margarita, the mixed strawberry-mango is absolutely fabulous. mmmmm.... brain freeze just thinking about it. And get the Tacos Al Pastor. Oh so yummy!!! mmmmm... I want some right now. The bean soup that comes with it is also good. But the tacos, squirted with some lime juice on top, are lip smacking good.
Recommend it, but only what I had. Not sure about the other items on the menu. -

I have been a patron of La Carreta for almost 20 years. My college buddies and I used to hit up the Hammond location almost every day after class for fiesta hour or dinner...or sometimes just to study. Since then, I moved to Baton Rouge and low and behold, Saul opens a store 1/2 mile from my house!!
The salsa can't be beat....but be sure not to fill up on it cause their entrees are delicioso. My favorites are the Chicken Fajitas (2 beans no rice), Burrito Verde, Mixed Fish Ceviche, Chipolte Shrimp, and Tacos de Carne Asada. The staff are very friendly, the food is always hot, and the Fiesta Is Always On! -

It's a decent, place for lunch, but if you want real Mexican, skip it.
Their salsa is good. (As usual, I filled up on chips and salsa.) The meal was slightly disappointing. I had a chicken burrito with a taco. The taco has the mouth feel that reminds me of cat food, enough said. Their burrito was a bit too salty. The beans were good according to me. (Not sure how my cube mate felt about them. Dealing with me and having IT security sitting next to us must have been hell for her that day.)
The service was very good. For some reason, the waiter stacked all nine meals on his left arm, which had an ample padding of hot holders. He got them off decently, but it made me a little nervous that I could be wearing several meals if he slipped. -

Pros: Fast service
Great mexican cheese dip
Good entertainment
Cons: The food is not as flavorful as I would expect. The beans are bland even with the cheese on top. A little salt and pepper would go a long way. The rice is dry. I had to add salsa to eat the rice.
Bottom line. Have an adult beverage or two, eat an app and have a good time. The full dinner can be skipped. -

I don't know if it's a chain restaurant or it's suppose to be authentic but I didn't find anything special here. However the guacamole was great! The tamales were ehhh, nothing much. I gave three stars because the service was friendly and awesome AND very patient since some of my friends took FOREVER to order.
I will definitely order the guacamole when I come here next time. -

La Caretta was my first Mexican experience in Baton Rouge, so I'm not sure what there is to compare it to here. The food was good and the frozen margaritas were really tasty, but service was a little slow and our waitress forgot our queso and we had to remind her to bring it once our entrees had already been served. It was a slow night (less than 20 people in the restaurant and there were at least 3 waitresses on), so I don't really have much sympathy for the oversight.
I thought the food was all very good (I had the fish tacos), but as a vegetarian (I DO eat fish, just no other meat), I was a little annoyed at the "surprise" meat in the queso since that wasn't listed on the menu. Do I really have to ask if there is meat in everything in Louisiana? If you're going to list ingredients on your menu, don't forget to mention the beef you're also putting in there along with the hot peppers. How do people with food allergies handle it down here? Anyways, I tried a bite of the queso from a section that didn't have meat and it was really good so next time I go I'll be sure to ask for NO beef in my queso. -

While I wouldn't recommend la caretta immediately to someone who asked me for a good mexican restaurant, I also would not rule it out as a decent place to go. Their food is delicious, but for the price you pay it is only so-so. Years ago I would have given this place a 5 star review, but the last few times I have gone the portions have gotten smaller and smaller. The last time I went, there was about a tablespoon of beans on my plate and 3 pieces of chicken in my quesadilla. I have not been back since. While other people may have had better experiences, I probably will not be going back because of mine. I will not condemn the place though because they have given me some pretty tasty meals, but I think they only deserve 3 out of 5 stars.

I've been here before and it was good and the atmosphere was great (which is why I'm giving it two stars... from my past experiences), but I just went back tonight and it was HORRID. I went with a group of 6 and 5 out of the 6 of us had bad service and food. We sat on the new patio which was nice, but it was relatively cold and they didn't have the fire on? ...and I have no idea why... everyone was wearing jackets out there, so if that's not a hint that we were freezing, I don't know what was. The salsa wasn't good at all this time - I don't know what changed. The chips were also really greasy and flaky... something was wrong with them. The food was brought our table very cold and no one really liked it except for the lukewarm soups. Seriously, we had fajitas and I KNOW when I have gotten fajitas here in the past they are brought to you sizzling. It's part of the effect. This time, they were not making a sound at all or even steaming. Everything was cold, and it wasn't THAT cold outside. The service also sucked. Our waiter seemed to have a mental handicap, and for that I wonder why La Carreta placed him where he would have to interact so heavily with people. He got 2/6 orders wrong and had to come verify them, he never refilled my drink without me asking and he was never around. He also was very rude to another waiter, although I don't think he realized it. What else? When one of our group decided they had enough, they asked for their food to be heated up because it was basically like eating food out of a refrigerator. They ended up taking only HALF of his meal off his ticket (why not comp the whole 12 dollar meal? sad.) instead of the whole thing. Let me mention he only ate about 3 bites because they didn't really heat it up at all.
AND finally, when we were leaving, since we parked in front, we walked around the building and there were HUGE RAT TRAPS EVERYWHERE. Part of me thinks, "Oh good... kill those mice!" However, another part of me wants to never go back with the thought of mice in the restaurant, so I never will. Good luck to anyone who is willing to try it again... -

Mostly mediocre food and usually mediocre service. But it is relatively inexpensive. The cheese dip with chorizo is quite good.

Baton Rouge, LA
Easily the worst Tex-Mex Food I have ever had.
The salsa (key ingredient to Mexican restaurants) was straight from a jar. I watched the waitress pour it from the jar to the serving conatiner. Chips were way too salty for their own good.
The menu was seriously lacking, especially compared to its average rivals. Our entrees took a while and were cold when we got them. The meat was not tender and juicy like I expected. Baton Rouge is not a Mexican food town, and La Carreta is just more evidence.
Additionally, it seems as if the wait took over 45 minutes. Its a very popular place (no idea why, unless you have never had real Tex-Mex) and they didn't handle table turnover very well.
The only thing I could see that would make this pplace enjoyable is the entertainment they bring in. Seem to recall a band performing (thought they sounded good) and maybe that explained the number of people.
If you must, then go. But please read my "La Tiendita" review if you care about real Mexican food. -

Delicious, fresh, homemade salsa. Good chips. Really good guacamole and generally satisfying food. If you order a la carte, it can be cheap. I've never had a bad meal here although I find it tough to pay this much for Mexican food when you can get such great, authentic Mexican food elsewhere for half the price. Here, you're paying for the atmosphere. They usually have a live band at night. There's a salsa dancing night once a week. Their margaritas are strong and well priced. They have a huge selection of tequilla. A fun place to spend the evening.

I'm down with La Carreta. It's a chain out of Covington, Louisiana, if that can qualify for a chain. There is an extensive menu of low cost good eats lunch specials. I'm a likin' it.

This mexican restaurant is just ok with me. I've been to much better though. I might go back here if invited by a friend otherwise my choice would be a different mexican restaurant.
When I ate here (only eaten here once), I ordered the tamales and my guest ordered the beef enchiladas dinner. I also ordered a drink (can't remember the name but it was ok...very heavy on the alcohol). The food was mediocre. Nothing to rave about. Nothing to complain about either. I've had better. Their refried beans were pretty good. I think judging refried beans is up to the person eating them. Someone may like their's chunky, others might like their's peppery, others might like their's smooth with an occassional whole bean floating around in them. I like mine semi smooth with random chunks of beans but the beans have to be soft and the skins easily chewable, not chewy, and not heavy on black pepper either. This restaurant served them just like I like them. The waiter didn't speak english hardly at all. Very hard to communicate other than pointing to the menu and saying "i'll have that!". A bunch of police officers walked in that night while we were eating so our waiter quickly started attending to them more than my table. That's a pet peeve with me!!!! I'm a paying customer too!..just as equal!
I hope these mexican waiters soon learn American ettiquette of being a waiter!! Took him foreeeeeeever to bring the ticket to us too then to take the bill to process it.....ugh!! I hate waiting like that when I want to leave but don't want to cause a scene by snapping my fingers saying "EXCUSE ME"! -

Middle of the road. The prices are low, and here you're getting exactly what you pay for. It's certainly not bad, but it's mediocre at best. The fajita platters are the cheapest I've ever come across, and they do get the job done. If you're looking for mexican food and you're willing to sacrifice quality for price, this is where you want to go.

For someone who doesn't really like Mexican food, I really do like La Carreta. They have a great menu selection and reasonable prices. You also get a ton of food (I don't think I've ever finished a full meal there!).

This place is great for the price. The food is on par with Superior and Ninfa's of Baton Rouge. The service is good, although sometime you might have to deal with a little bit of a language barier with some of the staff. I absolutely love this place for lunch and dinner. I rarely spend more than $15 and get a great meal out of the deal. The drinks are decent, but if you go down the street to Superior Bar and Grill you get more bang for you buck in the drink department.

la carreta is by far the best mexican restaurant in baton rouge. when the food arrives, my husband and i stop talking and dig in. believe me, if you knew us personally..you would realize that it takes a miracle to keep us quiet.
