We have come here a lot in the past two years and were always pleased with our options. We stopped coming because the proprietors would, like clockwork, bust out the pine-sol in the middle of the dinner hour (around 7pm).  I have never understood this behavior.

On our last last week's visit, we were told by the cashier that La Campina changed owners just days before and one can get anything they want, even if it isn't on the menu. She also conveyed that they make their own tortillas, which was music to my husband's ears.

I ordered the cheese enchiladas and he got a nachos supreme with chicken.  (I know, I know, nachos isn't Mexican food.) I also ordered a large jamaica.

The jamaica came in a styrofoam cup, even though we ordered in, which was weird not to mention wasteful. It was nothing to brag about and it even had a funny aftertaste. It wasn't sweet enough and I am not a huge proponent of sugar. (Incidently, I like my horchata on the not-so sweet side and jamaica quite the opposite.)

The munch-while-you-wait chips in the self-serve area didn't taste homemade...I guess they reserve those tortillas for dishes. In fact, they tasted a bit old. But, oh my, the red salsa made with roasted peppers was incredible.  Possibly the best tacqueria salsa I have ever tasted north of the border. That was a new owner contribution, for sure.

OK, now for the bad news.  The enchiladas were basically rolled quesadillas, possibly microwaved(?), with sauce poured atop them. Nothing was baked. The tortillas weren't even dipped in the sauce before putting the cheese in and the cheese wasn't fully melted inside. The sauce was good though, and noticeably homemade, with the roasted peppers effect and all.

Also, by the end of the meal, the standard lettuce feature on my plate had shed it's water so much that half of my plate was covered with cold water.  That didn't help my unmelted enchilada cheese stay warm. I don't think that has ever happened to me in all my years of...

The nachos chips in my husbands meal were definately of the homemade variety, and they were curiously amazing.

I think that I will be able to live without this restaurant, despite it being in a great location.  Too bad, because sometimes you just need to go to a taqueria.

I'd been craving a good burrito for a couple of days. I tried to go to my old stand-by spot and they gave me the total brush off when I walked in so I was pissed and ready to step out with the first burrito place I saw (ignored Green Burrito).  That's when I saw it...La Campina Taqueria. It was as if I'd just seen a jug of cold water while dehydrating in the desert.

I walked in and noticed that I was the only person there. The friendly guy who appeared to be the only one working promptly greeted me. I was going to get a veggie burrito when I did a last minute change to a chicken burrito.  I noticed from the menu that it came with lettuce, tomato, rice, beans and sour cream. PERFECT! Actually, not so much. I had specified that I only wanted a little bit of beans and there was a little confusion between us as English isn't a first language here.  What I got was a burrito chuck full of chicken (strange little pieces) and a few specs of beans and a little bit of rice.  The friggin' lettuce, sour cream and tomato was on the side! That was not what I had in mind. I also ordered the burrito wet and the sauce was just ok. I didn't really enjoy it at all! I kept trying to re-stuff my burrito with the things that I wanted it to have and by the end my plate looked like a burrito massacre had unfolded.  The price wasn't that hot either. The burrito and a small drink came to over $9.

They offer a chip and salsa bar but the chips were stale and there were two types of salsa and jalapenos and limes. Not much there but the non pico de gallo salsa was the tastiest thing this place had to offer.

Not a lot of people frequent this place, but one of the only places in Elk Grove to get a good authentic mexican meal. Their carne asade burritos...one of the best around.  Try a corona there, they do it authentic like with salt, tapatio, lime, and a shrimp! Have not seen that outside of Mexico.

This place was ok. The food wasn't what i expected. I ordered 3 carne asada....but what i got was steak that was so finely chop that it could have been ground beef.  I though it would be more authentic. I had better.
