Went here today for the kickboxing class. It was great! The class was only an hour, but you're going so fast and intense that time really fly's. I just signed up for the free class(go to their website) and there was only about 15 or so other ppl, from beginners(like me) to some real pros. The only reason it gets four stars is the price:

$84 month to month w/ $190 reg. fee
$74 a month for 1 yr w/ $90 reg. fee
$54 a month for 3 yrs  "      "

But if you want something that's gonna kick your butt and have some fun doing it, then you should at least try the place out.

Awesome Gym, Awesome Staff.  Decent price.

but didnt like the politics.  I joined when they first opened up and the general manager told me, everything was included for this price.

After they open, I started the mma/bjj class... which was what I only wanted.  I get a bill saying i need to pay an additional fee for that class...

I was heated.

Then there were issues with the guy that was teaching our class... and then the teachers changed for a bit.

I let my contract run out and opted not to sign up and had to call customer service..whenever they answered the phone (this was a weekly battle). Sometimes I'll be on the phone for 15 mins..

I really liked the new gym, but didnt like how I was convinced to join by saying everything is in one rolled up package... which it wasnt.

Some of the staff members were awesome.

You know when you find a class that kicks your butt and you have a fun time doing it? Well a few months ago that is what LA Boxing provided.

If you are thinking about joining a boxing gym this is NOT the one to join. The new management is incredibly rude, not welcoming, and has no idea to run a gym.  They treat their loyal members like crap and and have hired some weak ass instructors.

If you do by chance go here, make sure you take Anthony's class. He is amazing!

I used to work out at the gym and it can get pretty boring. When I heard about this place from yelp..I had to go check it out for myself.

The workouts are intense and nothing like running on the treadmill. I love how the instructors drill the students and still come around to correct or help people who don't quite understand. Their also very encouraging when students get discouraged about certain workout exercises. Its a great way to get in shape and a great way to release any anger or stress on the bag.

The only downside is the gloves they offer are expensive so I would buy them somewhere else. But for the price you pay to have access to the classes are really cheap considering how much a personal trainer at a gym would cost. I have taken classes with Shante and Anthony and both are amazing, wonderful instructors. Definitely my new home!

My new 2nd home...

The workouts here are amazing....don't get me wrong...if you think kickboxing is for sissies-go and see for yourself who ends up a sissy. Oh and bring a friend because there's PLENTY of punching bags to go around.

I usually go to Anthony or Mike A.'s classes because those 2 instructors schedules fit mine. They are intense!! What i like the most is the 15 minute warm up (the hardest part) and 15 minute cool down/ab workout. I'm really learning so much, I'm not tired anymore walking up (1) flight of stairs, its super fun, and I'm learning how to properly whoop some ass!

Anthony and Mike are not only qualified instructors,  but awesome instructors to go to-they change up their classes, have the patience to walk through every warm-up/exercise and really care about the students. I have yet to try the other instructors who I hear great stuff about.

I can't believe how much I sweat before during and after these workouts-i sweat out of my ear and it makes me wanna slap ya mamma!!!

i take the morning classes & take the occasional sparring class on saturday. the monthly dues could be steep but, if you can fit it into your budget their trainers will really kick your butt and make it well worth it for fitness sake. anthony & scotts classes are very challenging and fun. hope this helps... one last thing they  keep the place very sanitized from what i have seen after the morning classes they; mop the mats, wipe down the bags and equipment mon - fri. i've been there a few times on the weekend and i  saw someone wiping down the equipment after the 12 o'clock class.

Talk about a great workout!  I'm very ladylike, heels, skirts and spas.  But when I'm here, I'm a total tomboy!  I punch those bags as hard as I can and when Mike says "on the floor" I do my best to do REAL pushups.  It's hard, it's like being in boot camp.  But since I only have one hour to workout a few days a week, it better be worth it.   Plus, letting all your agressions out on a punching bag is sometimes better than therapy!!

By the way, this is the only gym that I've ever belonged to that I can honestly say, has the best insturctors.  Every single one of them.  Anthony and Scott kick ass!!  This was not the case for me at Crunch.

The owners are great and they are fair.   When you sign a membership contract, you are saying that you will pay for the services the gym provides.  The gym's job is to have the classes and facilities available to you.  If they honor their part of the contract, so should you.  That's why it's called a CONTRACT.  You can't sign a contract and say...JUST KIDDING!!  It's just like your lease, your car note, your cell phone service.  You sign those contracts, you have to pay for those things and services.  This is the world we live in.

Ok, I will admit, I only come here for the personal training. I am goal oriented like that.  But after someone I knew said, "Anthony's like, the best personal trainer, ever." and even backed it up with a one hour commute to and from her sessions, I had to try it out.

My wedding's in a few short weeks and I need to build up some killer arms again. If possible. In 4 weeks' time.

My expectations were realistic, I swear. I know that's not a possible goal. But, you need a goal to work towards, and that is mine.

I have had 2 sessions with Anthony. The second one was today. I have to say, I think my arms are looking more muscular already. (Definitely a good thing for a skinny little thing like me.) It could be my imagination. But I don't think so.

Anthony's a good trainer because ...

1) He listened to me. I told him about my body's quirks, like, I have a tendon that slips out of place in my right shoulder. Same thing with my right elbow. We avoided excessive irritation of those areas.
2) He's motivating, but not irritatingly so. I hate overly perky trainers. They do not do it for me. At all. Eew.
3) He walks the walk.  He's not the intimidating meat head type, but you can definitely tell that he himself does work out.

So... sorry, no comment on group classes or martial arts or boxing training. But Anthony and the weights and machines will get me in shape for the big day. I'm confident.

ADDICTING AS HELL!!!!!

Why you should come to LA Boxing in San Bruno:

--Although I've only taken classes by Mike A. and Anthony, LABoxing in San Bruno has the best intructors.  They are demanding, but not irritating; encouraging, but not disillusioned; tought, but very nice guys.

--My legs haven't been this sore since my equestrian days at Golden Gate Park Stables and my arms havent been this achy since my rock climbing days in college -- very exhausting workout.

--EXTREMELY REASONABLE PRICES!!!

--Easy, free and safe parking

--The facilities are clean and do not stink like an overused, sweaty jockstrap

--Balanced ratio of men to women in all the classes I've attended

--Great staff/instructors team

--There are free weights and some weight-training equipment

--The boxing ring is almost always empty so you can hop in there and have a round anytime you want

Final notes:
**This place is not for those who are seriously interested in learning the craft b/c sparring sessions are limited and 1-1 instruction is extra money
**Unlike most dance studios, there arent many mirrors where most of the kickboxing takes place, so it's hard to see your form while you do the class

---------------------------UPDATE----------------- -------------

Mike, Anthony & Igor are simply the best.  THey have all been extremely attentive to my technique and are always more than willing to help.  Mike's classes are really tough cardio-wise; Anthony's warm-up is killer; and Igor is really amazing - he always corrects and lets me punch/kick him for demos..LOL

The instructors are phenomenal and I highly suggest you ask about your technique as you do the classes/workouts.

I'm still super addicted to this place!

CYNTHIA. SHE IS AMAZING AND TOTALLY AWESOME.

I just came back from a kickboxing class and it was the most intense thing I have done in a long time. It involved so much of my body and it was like WAAAH but it was so worth it. Cynthia, the instructor, was super amazing. And she's sooooo sweet and it's amazing b/c I know she can kick my ass multiple ways. But I was sad b/c I know that I can't afford it, but I reeeeaaallllyyy want to come back here. They offer a lot of cool classes and stuff and the kickboxing alone is worth it. ALLEZ CUISINE!

OMG.

Today I signed up for a membership and did the boxing class with Gus.  Oh, it started out fine...a few calisthenics, getting the heart going.  Push up push up push up, punch punch punch, lunge lunge lunge.

Then we really got into it.

"Hard as you can!  Keep those arms moving!" Punch...punch...punch....

"Thirty more seconds!"
What?  Punch........punch...........

"Push ups!"
Push....up.......lie there a while.....push....up......

"Punching!"
Punch punch...........punch punch..........punch....punch..........

"Abs!"
Lie there, lie there, lie there...half-assed sit up...lie there, lie there.......

"Okay now stretching..."
Ah, sweet respite.

Loved it.  I'll be back.

-------------------------------------------------- ----------
Update 7/16/2007

After two weeks (and 3 classes later), I'm feeling great, wonderful in fact, about Gus's class.  Stamina's up, punches are stronger, and my tennis game has improved.

And if you need to rid yourself of some aggression, punching is better than crying.

I'm addicted to this place. I go four times a week or more...sometimes I go in the morning AND the evening of the same day.

Sure, I belong to a generic major gym as well, but I was always bored with my workouts there...running like a lab rat on a treadmill.

I practiced martial arts when I lived in LA, but haven't been able to find an authentic and affordable martial arts studio in my area since I've moved back to the bay area. Not being able to find a martial arts studio I enjoyed, I turned to the next best thing...la boxing...plus they offer mixed-martial arts classes as well.
In order to have consistent and effective workouts, I've found that you must enjoy the workout and the environment you're in.

The staff is very friendly and helpful...and bonus!...you get to try out a class for free.

This place has a heavy bag for each person, modern music and bootcamp style kickboxing and boxing workouts.

You won't find any of the 'turbo kickboxing-taebo-wow-i-am-making-a-fool-of-myself' workouts here.

I thought I was in pretty good shape when I joined...but the workout kicked my butt...I was drenched in sweat within the first 10 minutes of the class between the combinations of punching and kicking the bag, squats, crunches, push-ups, high-knees, etc. The instructors, Kyle and Gus, run the classes with tough love...when you feel like you're going to keel over from exhaustion...they push you harder...its good for your health!

...and if you really want to run like a lab-rat on treadmills, this place has weights and cardio machines as well.

So I've been a member less than a month...and though I still eat like a piglet, I've lost weight and toned-up.

Alright, this is for the people that truly has a passion and want to learn the 'Sweet Science' of the Fistic arts.

This place is only for soccer  moms, and people that want to upgrade from Tai-Bo to something more social, with a hint of credibility.

Upon me entering this location i was exited on the fact that there was an actual Ring and a tone of heavy bags for work outs, but thats just it.
I was told 'if you want you can jump rope at the back (a small space between the walls and a heavy bag).  WHAT IS A BOXING GYM THAT NEGLECTS THE BASIC OF JUMP ROPE !!!!
Sparing is out of the question due to the fact that the Gym is made up of 1= Large Ring
2= Heavy Bags
3= weight machines (yep you heard me, mostly weight machines and not much selection of free weights)

Where can one spar? actually that isn't part of their program.  Its more like look at the heavy bag in front of you? go ahead and Hit it with all you got!
Well teach you the 1's 2's and hooks and upper cuts but nothing to actual application, and after a set time we tell you to do push ups and sit ups.

This GYM is not for people that really want to learn the Art of Boxing.  More like a Glorified Cardio Class.

It is way too early for me to pass judgment as a member considering this location has only existed for 3 weeks... but I will do my best for now. If my opinion changes then I will let you guys know.

I signed up at this gym for two reasons... it's near my house and I like the idea of short hardcore workouts. I got sick of the same old workout where you go to the gym and lift weights for an hour and do cardio... BORING!
I have taken martial arts in the past so joining this gym was easy for me to do.
I gave a 5 star rating for LA Boxing because I have faith in the place and I am a member.  I do find some things wrong with the operation as a whole and I go back and forth between the pro's and con's.  If you are thinking of joining this gym I would give a limited recommendation to join.  I think it just really depends on what you are trying to get out of  joining a kick-boxing/boxing gym.  These are what I feel are the pros and cons of LA Boxing San Bruno:

Pro's:
-The workout you get from taking either boxing or kick boxing is intense.  It only takes an hour and works your whole body.  You will sweat a lot by the end.
-Boxing ring
-20+ full size Muy Thai bags
-Classes are NOT crowded (at least for the time being...maybe a whole bunch of people will sign up and the classes will become more crowded...who knows)
-Very reasonably priced
-Gym is open all day so you can go in and workout anytime
-Friendly owners/instructors
-LOTS of potential

Con's:
-At a beginners level taking classes wouldn't help much in real life fighting situations.  The classes are fitness based so very little time is spent on hand to hand fighting or defense.  If you are someone who is looking to be able to protect themselves from an attacker... then this might not be the place for you (at least not the first month).  Like I stated...this is a very new place, they said there will be more classes when there are more members so maybe they will start having intermediate classes or something like that.
-Limited classes... There are only 3 classes per day on the weekdays and 1 class on Saturday and Sunday.  This part really sucks for me because I have such a busy schedule that I don't get to go as often as I would like because I can't always make it to 5:15 or 6:30 (and who in their right mind wakes up at 5:30AM) .  Hopefully there will be more classes soon.
-This is kind of a spin off on my other two complaints...I think this gym will need to start offering some kind of level 2 class...all of us who signed up when the gym opened are going to progress.

Overall I like being a member here, it suits my needs (with the exception of needing more classes) and I already notice the difference in myself physically.  I can only see things getting better for us here as long as people keep signing up.

WE WANT YOU!!!!!!

So, I'm going to write a good review on this gym because I love what the boxing classes have done for my body and stamina. Thank God for Gus! I love the compliments I started getting after three weeks at this gym. Yes, two classes a week with Gus will make that much of a difference. This is a brutal workout but the payoff is amazing.

On top of the "Body By Gus" aspect, Gus, the boxing instructor, and Kyle, the kick boxing instructor, are just nice people that you would want to call your friends. And you feel like you've made friends with them after a while.

Now, my only complaint with this place is the missing locker room, and a somewhat indifferent front desk guy. I'm told he's a manager, but he seems to talk on his cell phone a lot, and let customers wait at the desk while he wraps up a conversation.

But back to my compliments on Gus, and the improvements he's directly responsible for. Hurray for Gus!

I haven't trained for about 2 years , and went to my first kick boxing class last Sat. Two days later I still can't walk down the stairs and having problem getting in and out of my car.  I had a total body work out taught by Kyle. Great class and I'm looking forward to work out more at this Gym.

I took my family for a free try out boxing class.  And we had a lot of fun!  The only thing we wish they would have is classes that we could pay for individually and not have to join the gym.  We enjoy running or biking but once in a while we would like to change our routine.  We have tried the gym but get bored easily.  But LA boxing is great!

it was a good experiment, but half way through the work out I said to myself "this just ain't me" (yes....I'm that guy that walked out) the instructor was really nice, but I wish there had been an intro class rather than "faster faster!!!!!"
it seems like a good gym, bound to get you into shape, and if you're into tall overweight baggage handeler dudes, or 40 something housewife with boob jobs and complimentry cabo sun wrinkles, this just may be the place for you.
