One of my favorite cafes in the marina! Can't go wrong here. Everything in this cafe is yummy!
Macaroons are delicious! So many flavors to pick from.
Coffee is great but they make the BEST Chai Latte in the world! I have not had a better Chai Latte than this place. Absolutely the best!
All the pastries are wonderful. Especially the huge fluffy croissants. Nice flaky crunchy exterior and fluffy center croissants. Oh how I want one right now :)
Brunch:
I'm hooked on the Open face Mushroom sandwich. It's pretty much a chicken sandwich with cream of mushroom sauce over it topped with melted cheese. Drool... need I say more. Beautiful sandwich!
This place has plenty of seats and on nice days its nice to sit outside.
Warning: you do leave smelling like this place. Just FYI :)Listed in: Best Brunch, My Neighborhood

I have always held the theory that the reason why the average American looks down on the French is because of plain old jealousy. Proof?
They dress better than we do.
They make better lovers.
Their language is sexier.
Oh, and let's not forget the minor miracles they manage to pull off with butter.
La Boulangerie offers a mouthwatering bevy of of sandwiches, quiches, tarts. Although you really can't go wrong with any of the tantalizing selections, make sure not to pass up on the Almond Croissant. A generous dusting of powdered sugar rests on a pillowy croissant BRIMMING with a creamy Almond Butter. If that doesn't make your toes curl, I'm not sure what will.
Any culture that can churn out food like that is okay by me! -

Very good macarons. I would go so far as to say that they're the best in San Francisco. They have the utmost thin crust with a very soft, gooey, chewy interior and fantastic flavor with my two favorite being raspberry (raspberry über alles!) and passion fruit mango. The filling, though, is a bit different than what I would consider ideal. It's almost like a macaron and a gummy bear got busy and had children. It's chewy but a different kind of chewy. Still, it's very good.
The prosciutto and cheese sandwich though... not the same kind of prosciutto which I had in Rome, so my snob comes out because prosciutto should taste like prosciutto dammit! It has to be BOLD and IN YOUR FACE and HELLO I AM PROSCIUTTO WHAT YOU SILLY AMERICAN YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT PROSCIUTTO IS?!?!?!
I will also mention that they sold me 17 macarons for the price of 14 because I ordered a bunch of thinner ones instead of the normally massive ones they sell. -

Walking in the neighborhood...the bf and I were in the lines for a light, fresh lunch/brunch option. From the second we walked into La Boulangerie...I knew we had made the right choice. I felt almost as if I was in Paris at one of their sidewalk cafes. It was lovely.
Their menu offers open face sandwiches (the few I saw I almost took off of people's plates), salads, burgers, variety of pastries and several brunch options (ex - omelets, french toast, granola).
Highlights -
*Warm Goat Cheese Salad - herbed goat cheese, grilled crouton, candied pecans, green. Try one thing...spread some of their dijon mustard (you can get this by the utensils) on a slice of the grilled crouton, then layer it with goat cheese and top with a few greens and I dare you not to tell me that bite isn't heaven. :)
*French Onion Soup - perfectly made and topped with a cheesy crouton. A cup is the perfect addition to one of their salads.
*Croque Madame - ham, swiss & bechamel on toasted pain de mie, topped with a fried egg, with greens. The bf, who loves croque madames, said this was one of the best he's ever had. That says a lot.
Seating - offered upstairs, downstairs, as well as a few tables outside in front. You order at the counter, then your food is brought to you pretty quickly.
Overall...from the ambiance to the service to the food food...well done, La Boulangerie! We'll be back very soon!! -

Came here after my good friend told me this is her MUST GO TO BAKERY in the SF area. I thought, "Sure, I love French bakeries. Let's give this a try!" (Even though I had already indulged myself with a huge burrito for breakfast."
This location is located tucked around the corner on a not as busy street, but the second you walk in, it feels like you've stepped into a cozy small bakery in France! This place has EVERYTHING! From pre-packaged baguette sandwiches you can pick up for lunch (they have mini ones as well) to macarons! I was overwhelmed with what to get but ended up deciding on the almond croissant and 3 macarons.
The almond croissant was decadent. It's literally covered in almonds and has a sweet almond paste inside/on top. Pretty good! I got their caramel, coffee, and hazelnut chocolate macarons. In my opinion, a little too sweet for me and I've had better, but not bad!
They also sell their own brand of ground up coffee and different kinds of spreads/jams such as dulce de leche etc.
Pretty good bakery but extremely pricey. Everything was a little too sweet for me, but wouldn't mind coming here again to give it a try. -

Yummy macarons! Not too sweet and just enough flavor. The quiche lorraine was pretty good too.

Review is for their macarons only- It was only average in my book. One of my cookies had a nice chew to it, but the other was more crumbly- it didn't taste as fresh as some of the other places I've purchased from in SF. The passion fruit flavor was good, but pistachio was just so-so. I would probably not come here again for macarons, but would try some of the other desserts people have raved about!

I wandered in yesterday out of curiosity, feeling rather haggard after a doctor's appointment. The shop was small and packed with all sorts of baked goods; the actual bakery was in plain sight to the rear of the store. Everything smelled delicious.
There is savory fare here (to-go prosciutto and fig sandwiches, salads, goat cheese creations, etc), but the real stand-out is the beautifully presented bakery case. Macaroons, baguettes, tarts, and countless other treats are displayed in a beautiful (mostly yellow and brown) rainbow, all begging to be taken home. There are plenty of sample stations to try a bite of a new treat. Everything is absolutely fresh and delicious.
The real standout experience for me came, however, with the customer service. As soon as I walked in and began to look around, an employee approached asked if I needed help. When I said I was browsing, she told me to "browse with my tastebuds" and guided me to a table inside of the bakery. There, I was presented with an impromptu jam tasting- five of the Boulange spreads and different pastry options. Talk about an "above-and-beyond" experience!
Unexpected standouts to look out for (because come on, we all know that the tarts and macaroons are amazing):
*The homemade hazelnut spread. Think Nutella for adults.
*Chocolate madelines. Such a flavorful treat.
*Plain croissants warmed in the oven with their homemade strawberry jam.
*Raspberry financier!
La Boulange is so successful because it provides good, consistently high-quality food presented so that it feels like a celebration. -

Definitely my favorite bakery in SF! My Saturday morning routine includes dropping in for some le pain au chocolat. It's perfectly flaky and delicious.
And I love grabbing a box of their macaroons - the caramel is to die for. They make perfect hostess gifts! -

Yummy yummy in my tummy!
I went here last Sunday in search of a delicious treat to take to my mother-in-law's house for dinner. There wasn't much left at the end of the day to be honest (that's gotta be a good sign!) but there were two things that we settled on: a slice of raspberry & strawberry tart along with a slice of lemon tart. I have a serious weakness for french pastries, especially those involving custard and fresh fruit. I LOVED LOVED LOVED these tarts.
The other awesome thing about this location is that they literally have the bakery in plain sight (next to the display case). For some reason, that makes me more likely to believe that the items such as the macaroons were made fresh that day.
We've also become addicted to the almond croissants which are great- i've never seen that many almonds in one place! Run don't walk to your nearest shop! -

My bf and I was in SF for our couple trip. We explored town and this was in one of my must visits while we visit SF; he's into science (he's an engineer, so he's pretty nerdy), and I am into food and shopping. Personally, I think my interest is much more exciting; don't you agree?
Since I've tried so many macaroons... this place gets so much highlights; so I made this place as part of 'Rachel's to do list!'. I was glad I found this place. Their macaroons is delicious! I've had better but theirs is very impressive regardless. Not too sugary and I didn't taste 'too much food coloring at all!'
I've tried their almond croissants; I wasn't fully impressed; but it was good. I rather eat 85c in OC; they have really good almond pastries.
i am excited to wake up tomorrow and eat my strawberry pastries LOL. I am so excited; I can't hardly contain myself right now... but I will have to use any will power I have not to dust it before midnight.
I also ordered two loaf of bread. I ate one; and I am saving one to bring back to OC and planning to tear it up with french butter!
My bf and I also sat down at their cafe and ordered their mini burgers; yummmmm!!! they're really juicy and full of flavor.
This place is a must visit; and met all my expectation.

Pastries are so good. SO good. Also the macarons - to die. Food is five stars all the way. Haven't had anything that wasn't amazing.
However, the Friday after Thanksgiving I stopped in to get two dozen macarons as a hostess gift for a dinner I was attending. I said I didn't have any preferences for flavors and so the cashier gave me a pre-packaged box of 24 (or so I thought). However, when I arrived at my dinner, there were only 21 macarons in the box. I called immediately and they said next time I was around just to pop in and they'd give me the other three. So, the next weekend that's exactly what I did, only to get some incredulity and attitude from some women behind the counter. They told me that they put the extra three in a separate bag usually to avoid damaging them in the box - cool - but that's not what happened in my case. I didn't miss them - they weren't there. Finally, the older woman said to the girl helping me with my order (I was also buying croissants and bread) "just give them to her" in a tone I did not appreciate.
Honestly, I'll go back because the food is so amazing but I'm reserving five stars until the customer service improves. -

I've spent about $3,000 on their macarons. I really should put myself through pastry school to learn how to make them.
I've tried these and the almond croissants, and never strayed from their beautiful baked puffiness. God bless La Boulangerie. America! -

One of the few American bakeries that reminds me of France! Yes, I'm "Chinois" but my wife is from France and so are most of her family members.
How so? They got an excellent and quite authentic flakey pastry that they use in their both savory and sweet pastries. They are really quite good - as good as it gets in the States and on the West Coast.
Get any of the croissants, all the tartes and quiches are great, and so are their canelles!!! For the healthy eaters, go for the whole wheat croissants. I think they are better than the regular ones. -

Chocolate croissants are not very flaky, but 'bready', and kind of disappointing. Macaroons are also overly sweet, and not as flavorful as authentic ones we got in France, or even from more authentic bakeries in Pasadena (lette bakery).

I'm not sure if I have ever had a macaroon before, but they had them in every possible flavor. Are they typically this amazing, or just this place? Until I find out differently....this place gets special high praise. I think there are other locations, but something tells me this location on Pine is the real deal. It didn't feel like a chain bakery at all, I felt like I was in someone's kitchen who loved to bake the tastiest things imaginable.

I was on a hunt for pretty macarons after seeing pictures my friends post on Facebook and ended up here.
Maybe because we got here just minutes before they closed on a Saturday afternoon or I'm just used to my macarons being NOT so insanely sweet.. but I was disappointed by the macarons here.
We ended up getting coffee, cherry, pistachio, salted caramel, coconut, and hazelnut chocolate macarons and the cherry one was nearly falling apart and everything else but the coconut flavored one was WAY too sweet.
If you're ever in Sacramento, you should DEFINITELY check out Ginger Elizabeth's for some AMAZING macarons that aren't too sweet or too bland. It's just right. -

I don't know how I manage to make things so complicated, but I always do. Case in point, taking Butters to the vet this morning. After we were finished, I realized I needed to recharge my clipper, and thus, needed cash (which I don't carry. I like the suspense.) SO I waddled down the street with my drugged out, very very angry -with -me furry companion at my side, to the ATM. Eff, now I just have a 20... where to break it... hmm...
Since Butters was so angry with me, and I was so frustrated, it was obvious- I'm going to break it on pastries. DUH. So we waddled over to La Boulangerie, and beheld the most beautiful quintessentially french pastry shop in the city- perhaps all of the US. I selected a croissant, and a seeded baguette. The man, sensing my cat was high and angry after having 5 shots, a microchip, and a rectal exam, he threw in another croissant for free. Either that, or he thought Butters was cute and felt sorry for the poor wayward ginger child.
Their croissants are just unreal. And their baguettes make me wish I had irish butter, pickles, and salami, and was also walking around the Louvre gardens. But no. I got to eat part of my baguette on the muni as I rode back towards law school. But it is worth the muni ride to get here, folks. Trust me.Listed in: Breaking the fast and livin…

Great food! I haven't really been to a dedicated bakery before, but this was an excellent start. I've been here three times now with my GF and am fairly impressed.
The first time I got the lemon turnover and lemon macaroon (see a trend? :P). The turnover was pretty good but the macaron was a little too sweet for me. My GF loved it though (sweet tooth) so that's just a subjective thing :P.
The second time I got something like the orange cinnamon morning roll (forget the exact name), and it actually wasn't that good.. even though I went in the morning, the bun wasn't as doughy/fresh/fluffy or something that I thought it would be, it was kind of dry, but not stale... hard to explain haha.
Anyways, the third time I went (just a couple days ago) I got the sugar brioche and passion fruit-mango & cherry macarons. The brioche was very good (mm sugar crystals on top), and the cherry macaron was okay.. However, the passion fruit-mango macaron was delicious!! It was easily the best thing I've had so far at this bakery and I think I will stick to it.
For being a French bakery in SF, the prices at this place were actually fairly reasonable as well... always a plus. -

Having just returned from a trip to France, I had HIGH expectations after visiting a gazillion boulangeries in Paris & Provence. So being in town for a wedding, I decided to jog from our hotel at Fisherman's Wharf to La Boulangerie.
The croissants were SPOT ON and the blueberry lemon pound cake was "Wohoo! As good as it gets!" I'd definitely go back on another visit to SF but may take a cab next trip around. -

Sweet Jesus, save me from these almond croissants! I am addicted! You look at the thing and think to yourself: "Is that just a pile of sliced almonds, or is there actually pastry in there?" I think it's some kind of camouflaging technique that Bay Bread uses to hide their delicious pastry from zombies or werewolves or Fillmore yuppies, or whatever.
Everything is good here - I've had the savory breads, the savory tarts, the quiches, the sweet tarts, the cookies, the meringues. It's all good. You can't go wrong.
The other day they had chocolate hazelnut croissants. This was new to me, but being a sucker for both chocolate and their nutty croissants, I had to try. So damned good. Run, don't walk. And please, don't be a douchebag and double-park outside on Pine. Not cool. -

Delicious treats and sandwiches here. The chocolate croissants are to die for.
But, I must say, this chain has been a mess as of late. Not this particular location... But I've been to 3 of the "La Boulange" restaurants in the past month in an attempt to get a croque moisseur for brunch. The first, Cole Valley location, watched as my friends and I spent 10 minutes deciding what to order and finally when we went to place our order they told us the oven was broken and they were out of about 1/3 of the menu items. Great.
Another time I was at the Pac Heights location, just around the corner from this place and the staff was completely rude and unaccomodating. I first asked about the croissants (not knowing this place was literally a block away) and they said they were out. Good customer service skills would have you suggest trying this place, right? Well, they didn't. Next, I tried to order my croque moisseur again, and no can do... they were out.
Either the croque is a popular item or La Boulange has to get their ish together because they're constantly in shambles or running out of a staple for a French cafe, not too late in the day either. Both times around 1 or 2 on a Saturday.
Overall, though, the bakery is a delight. Specifically this one. -

Wow! I stopped in yesterday for lunch. I loved it! I was able to get oatmeal and fruit for lunch (sometimes you just want breakfast for lunch or dinner). It was very good, piping hot, with strawberries, bananas and blueberries on top. I also had a mocha, which was to die for! I ordered the small, but it was big! I also ordered an almond croissant to go...amazing! Their pastries are to die for and the food is very good. I will be eating there again for sure!
I also ran into an old friend I had not seen in years! Katie! I am so happy I stopped in for lunch!

Good thing I don't live in San Francisco because if I did, I would come here everyday and probably gain an incredible amount of weight.
This is one of the most amazing bakeries, if not the most amazing, I have ever been to. Everything I have ordered thus far has been buttery, heavenly goodness. The first time I came here, I ordered an almond croissant. The top was completely covered in almonds and biting into it was biting into a cloud of almond heaven. My boyfriend ordered the lemon turnover, and that was lemony without being too sour and the pastry was flaky and buttery. I loved it so much, we can the next morning and ordered more items. Currently, an eclair is waiting in my refrigerator and I can't wait to try it (I'm surprised I have lasted this long). We tried a couple of their macarons (chocolate hazelnut and lemon), and they were rich and so yummy. They have a variety of other flavors, such as cherry, pistachio, violet, caramel, and raspberry.
If you are in the bay, you MUST try La Boulangerie! -

This place has been on the cusps but today was it. They were not even that busy and homeboy got my order way wrong! He charged me for 2 drinks, a quiche, and salad when all I ordered was a veggie quiche and salad. -- what did I get though?-- a ham quiche -- I don't eat ham!! Dumb!! -- Take my advice and go across the street to Roma. They never mess up.

When the time comes that I need to move, I am making a vow to not live within walking distance of this place! It will be the best diet move I can make.
I lack all will-power and always find myself taking Pine Street home just so I can walk past this place....and then walk in just 'to look'....and then come out with either a chocolate Viennoise....or a fruit tart.....or an almond croissant....or a small smoked salmon sandwich....or a loaf of fig pistachio bread....or a piece of vegetable pizza bread....or a sugar brioche.... Okay. You get my point.
The samples have exposed me to things I never thought about getting: the chocolate ganache tart (so rich and delicious!), the orange morning bun, the croissant bread pudding.
I probably shouldn't have written this while I am hungry because now I'm tempted to go walk down the street to see what they have left.
On that note, try to go early so that you have more choices. Things go fast here! -

I'm a macaroon afficionado. Had to yelp the nearest macaroon shop to satisfy my macaroon craving. $1.50 each, not bad and they were pretty small. I tried the passionfruit mango flavor. It was good. Also tried the french style sandwiches.
-Passionfruit-mango macaroon: 4 stars
-Cambozola & pear sandwich on walnut bread: BOMB! If you like blue cheese this is a match made in stinky cheese heaven. Melts in your mouth and pairs perfectly with the slight sweetness of the brown pear. 4 star.
-Prosciutto & fig sandwich on walnut bread: 2 stars. Can live without. The ham was too chewy.
Will definately come back to satisfty my carbaholic ways. -

La Boulangerie now has many offspring...La Boulange de Cole, de Market, de Noe, de Hayes, La Boulange on Fillmore...did I name them all? Probably not. But this bakery on Pine is the O.G., the grandaddy of them all.
Croissants, cream puffs, tarts...they look great, they smell great--but I am not tempted to purchase them. At LB, I save my money & calories for one thing: macarons.
$1.50 each. 2-3 bites of chewy sweetness. So many flavors but I always end up getting pistachio, espresso & lemon.
I love supporting our local chains!Listed in: Parisian Macarons

The best bakery I've yet found in SF. The almond croissant changed the way I think about croissants (which, granted, I don't do very often). Those things are AHMAZING.
Just looking in their cases at all the delicious treats is enjoyable in itself. I usually try to be good and only get a few little things, but it would be a great place to get a box of goodies for a party or gathering. They have a wide selection of pastries of all kinds, mini sandwiches, breads, cookies, cakes, about 10 different flavors/colors of french macarons (which aren't the best I've found in the city, but still quite good). I especially love the adorable little pink and orange Passion Fruit/Mango ones.
All the other baked goods are special and really really delicious. They have soup, drinks, and other to-go stuff as well. The homemade granola is also worth tasting.
They usually have 3-4 different things out for sampling, which is how I found out about the tastebud orgasm that is their almond croissant. -

La Boulange has been great for years...and it continues on being the great French oasis of pastries, bread and desserts.
And now I have twice tried their catering for work. What a grand slam with the office folk. Their pastry and bread baskets serve a lot of people and every bite is delicious. I bought a light breakfast for 22 people that included bread, pastries, coffee, juice and homemade granola bars for a little over $120. Anyone who has tried to cater for office retreats knows this is a steal.
La Boulange is the place to go for so many great Parisian goodies, and now it's my go-to caterer for breakfast! -

I was quite sad to find that their almond croissants were all sold out by the time I got here.
But I bought a coffee and chocolate macaroon instead. It tasted kind of cold and hard..but I think it's because I was walking around in the rain for quite a while....
I also bought vanilla flan. It was good!
And then I found out they had a smaller branch in downtown. Why did I go all the way to Pac Heights to find it?Listed in: The Hunt for Baked Goods

- Locale destination -
It's in a fashionable area (I don't know SF well, so don't ask me ;p) - coffee shops, furniture, clothing shops etc. around here. The bakery is small and has a cozy atmosphere. It's like 10 seconds from their cafe.
- Gluttony expedition -
Potato chips: They put tons of herbs in it. It's a bit hard, but good chips.
Macaron - Macaron itself wasn't so light. I prefer puffy ones. But colorful and looking great.
Black currant: It didn't taste black currant much. It has the jam inside. meh.
Coffee: Caramel cream in it. I like it.
Pistachio macaron: Hint of pistachio flavor. meh.
Vanilla Eclair: Light and good. I prefer the custard with real vanilla beans.
Choux with chocolate custard: This is not so sweet and quite good. Cream puff wasn't so puffy but still good.
- Conqueror's deduction -
3.5 stars. Overall not bad. All the sweets are not too sweet. I also had a sandwich here - it was a bit fresher than the one from their cafe. If you do care about the quality and don't need to drink coffee, I'll come here, not cafe.
*Ok. The name for their cafe is so similar, so I uploaded pictures here to the cafe by mistake. (iphone) Please tell me how to fix this ;) -

Some of the best, most authentic French pastries outside of France.
I find myself here constantly, and when I'm not able to make it, I am daydreaming of mini sandwiches, almond croissants and canneles!
The staff is always friendly, even when rushed. Rudy makes my day!
Minus one star for allowing sub-par establishments that would otherwise flounder, like Rigolo Cafe in Laurel Heights, to ride on their coattails by letting them sell their delicious breads and pastries. -
