Since we were in the neighborhood (we had purchased tickets to the Jaime Maussan Presentation in Teatro Los Pinos), we decided to stop by here for dinner. It had been about 5 years since I last ate in this little Mexican gem. It was a Monday night so we found parking on their lot and there were plenty of tables for two to choose from.

I liked the decor, it gives you a warm Mexican Cabin feeling (but with 40+ inch television in evey corner).

I ordered the chicken enchiladas and a coke; and the boyfriend order the molcajete (pronounces mole-kaw-heh-tay) for one person. We ordered two cokes.

The chips and salsa were actually pretty good. The chips were ginarmous and the salsa was spicy.

Even though the cokes were served in a glass from the can in front of us, we both thought they had a taste of Sprite or 7-Up. We both came to the conclusion that they had accidentally given us lime flavored ice cubes(you know... the ones you buy for the Margaritas). Oh, and I liked the black straws they gave, they felt.... sturdier.

My enchiladas were alright. I thought the ones from Charlys in Inglewood taste better. The bf's molcajete included carne asada, griled chicken, grilled cactus, chorizo, and thick strips of panela cheese. He actually really enjoyed his meal. I was shocked! Hes the pickiest eater I've ever met!

So between the two of us, this place gets Three Stars!

I heard so much from so many people, that maybe this affected my judgement.

I know decor has little effect on gourmet, but this run down little restaurant was just yuck.  It wasn't that 'grease on the wall, sugar on the table' sort of yuck, but the kind where the sugar in the dispenser is frozen into a solid block from years of sitting in disuse.  All of the bottles at the bar are grease and dust covered, reminding me of the cupboard directly above the stove at my moms house.

Onto the food.  Meh.  I thought I would be adventurous and tried a Molcajete with varied meats.  While it was visually interesting and very well cooked, it didn't strike me as too tasty.  Also the tortilla's had mold.

I know, it looks like I'm just complaining for complaining's sake, and of course I may have just come on an off day when the manager was on vacation or something, but I really can't think of a nice thing to say about this place.  Oh wait, parking was ok.

OMG, this is the best authentic Mexican restaurant this side of the border! It's always crazy busy and crowded, but worth the wait! You might find a bit of dust, nothing to get upset over, the staff is just too busy preparing amazing food and fast paced environment that this has been (i'm sure) an oversight! My favorite is the molcajate, with handmade tortillas and a cadillac to water it down, great chips and salsa! Yummy!

Interesting selection  for lunch offered up by one of my customers during a recent visit.  The Carne asada was a paper thin steak with peppers and onions.  Quite frankly it was chewey and dry.  The salm on smelled  great but I did not try it.  the Camarones Mojo Ajo looked llike a shrimp cocktail soup.   Plenty of shrimps to go around.

Althought the food was ok, I feel like the service and atmosphere warranted this place a three star rating.

Complex, perfectly made Mexican food, daily. There is often a wait for a table, especially in evening hours. Fajitas de Camaron are the best I've ever had, mojarra frita is excellent. Tasty caldos, fresh everything. Fresh juices (fruit and vegetable). They not only make the traditional steak, rice & beans, but they will do chicken breast with steamed vegies if your diet requires it. Awesome Parillas, plenty for several people. The beans can be a little spicy for kids. Fresh handmade tortillas. So if you find yourself in South Gate.... this is the spot to eat.
