I was staying at the Delamar, so the trip to the restaurant took all of 60 seconds. We started out with a private, single malt tasting on the terrace. Great Scotch and a great view. We then moved inside and began with a yellow and red beet salad, with goat cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette. "You had me at beets," (sorry Jerry Maguire). They were delicious. Next came a very nice mustard crusted filet mignon, with a potato onion tart, haricot vert, and three peppercorn sauce. For dessert was a decadent, warm Valrhona chocolate cake. Afterward, it was wine on the terrace. It was a lot of fun.

This place is the place to be if you're stuck in Greenwich over the summer and must socialize with the Polo playing crowd and/or the yacht docking crowd.  Right on the water, it's beautiful as the sun sets.  The indoor is more formal, while the outdoor area is much more casual (thus the polo players).  It is a high end crowd and there are a fair amount of both well-taken-cared of single females and males obviously looking to meet each other.

Drinks are pretty good.  The food on the other hand is on the bland side and between the salad and the halibut, I found myself stuffed but not really satisfied.  Overall, I think you are better off just grabbing drinks here.

Lastly, their parking lot usually has a nice selection of cars (this is Greenwich afterall) with a couple of Bentleys and from time to time a classic muscle car.  During the workweek, this place does fill up with suits and if you must dine a client in Greenwich, this is certainly the place to do it at.

I love L'escale, but not for the food - I love it for the atmosphere and absolutely stunning decor.  Every single room in this restaurant is dramatic and elegant, from the blood red bar room to the white linen tablecloth and candle formal dining room to the fairy lit back patio on the water.

Every time I have an out of town guest, my go-to for drinks is the bar at L'escale.  Maybe its because I used to waitress here in college when it was the laid back Atlantis beach bar, but I have a strong sense of familiarity and comfort sitting in this restaurant, which always make for a pleasant experience.  It's also a big hang out for Greenwich "townies", and if you are from the area you will most likely always run in to someone you know.

The red room bartender practices Sivananda yoga in the Bahamas on his off weeks, and can fix you a mean fresh raspberry caipirinha upon request.  The french fries on the outside deck are crisped to perfection, and while the champagne is expensive, its worth the view.  The tuna tar tar salad is an absolute must order item.

I would definitely recommend this place for before or after dinner drinks.

You will run in to the hedge fund crowd here, so if suits and stilletos aren't your thing, you may want to head to Greenwich Avenue around the corner instead.

My wife and I had a great meal here during our stop over on our way to Maine. This restaurant is owned by the same people who used to own La Goulue and various other restaurants in Manhattan.

My wife ordered the Halibut special, I had the gazpacho, a dozen oysters and the grilled octopus. Once my wife tasted my gazpacho she ordered her own. I usually like my gazpacho more rustic with some identifiable bits of vegetables but this puree was so tasty I could have ordered a few more, I could have also added some vodka and Tabasco and had a few Bloody Marys.

The rest of the meal was equally as good. The wines by the glass are excellent.

The waterside setting was beautiful until it started to rain, luckily just as we were finishing desert. We ran into the bar and had an after dinner drink. The bar and the interior rooms were as beautiful as the patio and probably would be great on a cold winter evening.

The best part is, the restaurant is connected to a great little hotel. We just walked upstairs and fell asleep.

L'escale is a such a great place!  I've been there only a few times, but so far a great experience each time.  It is on the pricey end of things, but you are paying for the atmosphere mostly- waterview in greenwich- so it's worth it.

Service is an A+.  The staff is very attentive and friendly.  And it smells really good in there- i know that's an odd statement, but it's a mix b/t delicious food and fresh flowers.  Really nice.

Some dishes to reccomend: Proscuitto and melon for an app, steak with seared foie gras topping and banana flavored donuts for dessert.  Pure gluttonous heaven!

I'm a patient guy. I truly am. I usually only care about the food. But the service disaster we just sat through was egregious. Let me itemize it for you:

    * Took 30 minutes and two requests to get water

    * Took 45 minutes to get our appetizers. The Caesar salad arrived without dressing and when we pointed this out, the waiter told us we were wrong without even looking.

    * Took 30 minutes to add dressing to aforementioned Caesar.

*45 minutes between appetizers and entrees. No explanation. No apologies. Nothing.

    * Medium-rare burgers arrived well done.

    * Our waiter never once asked anyone if they would like another drink after we first sat down.

Maybe we just hit it wrong or had the wrong waiter, but this was one seriously unpleasant experience.

This restaurant is a sham. It charges a ridiculous amount of money because it's on the water. The food is nothing special. By this I mean not very good.

The crab cakes were fine. The capers mayo that came with it was fine. All of the flavors were muted and way too boring. Especially when it's $14 for two lame crabcakes. The worst offender was the small cut of goat cheese (with nothing else - just a small 1 inch slab) for $17! and it was some of the worst goat cheese I've ever had.

The "fritatta" they made was not a "frittata" but rather an omelete. If the chef reads this and would like a recipe for a frittata, I would be happy to oblige.

The french toast was ok, but the bread they used was nothing special. And it should be considering the price.

The shrimp cocktail? Good, but the cocktail sauce was nothing special - and it should be for $15 for 4 shrimp.

The worst offense was the eggshell that was found on my friend's eggs. The chef had clearly stopped caring by the time our order went in.

I rate restaurants based on the expectations they place on themselves. If you are going to price your plates this high - you demand criticism if you are going to make such obvious mistakes and such bland food.

Great location, decent breakfast food, inattentive service, high prices.  The fruit, chocolate croissants, and sausages were all excellent.  The pancakes and bacon so-so:  the bacon was very thin and 'healthy' (as if one wants healthy bacon).  The pancakes were soggy.  The waiters forgot and had to be reminded twice about:  an order of bacon, water for 2 of 4; toast (despite bringing jam).  The missing bacon never came, but arrived on the check.

L'escale was fabulous! I attended a party over the weekend and we all had a blast.

As soon as we arrived the parking lot was full but the valets were lined up ready to assist. We entered and a friendly gentleman escorted us to where our party was. I admired the pretty dining room when we walked through. Our party had a private room so we were half inside and had half of the outside patio on the water. As the night progressed the service was top notch. Drinks were poured nicely, servers making rounds and the food was outstanding. We had a hot buffet with some yummy items. The apple and walnut salad was great. The farfalle pasta was tasty and the filet mignon was juicy. Loved the sauces on the side.

After the party finished we hung out at the outdoor bar until close. The location is perfect for a warm evening. Take a walk along the dock, sip some wine, and check out the yachts. 5 stars for a great experience!

Had drinks and a bite in the Lounge @ L'escale area while staying at the Delamar. Drinks were great, hub got a classic martini and loved it, I had a "Temperance", one of their 7 virtues specialty drinks. It was mint and muddled raspberries with light and dark rums. I'm not one for fruity explosion drinks but it was refreshing and loved watching the bartender make it, some effort went into it. He was great too, friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We were impressed that although it was packed out standing room only he was on his toes and attentive (he was the only bartender @ 10 pm). I only take a star off for the foccacia with chicken squash and jalapenos- it was OK but had pretty much no flavor and for the price we expected a bit more.
The best part of all is the people watching! As stated in other reviews, this is the place to watch the upper class mating games (or upper class wannabes) Good times I tell you, it's a fun show!

Ambience is inviting, sophisticated ,catering to the" yacht crowd" with a wonderful outdoor setting overlooking Greenwich Harbor. Service  was prompt and the staff was polite, involved and helpful. L'escale was a mixed bag of the" good , bad and the ugly'. The "good" was the "port of call mediteranean - like ambience", wonderful drink and wine selections and the outdoor bar . The halbut was reportedly  very good( I, personally would have rated  it ,just another halibut) ...the bouillabaisse and the lamb chops were reportedly good by two of our group members. The tuna tartar and  grilled octopus were OK, but had  a " been there , done that" forgettable presentation. The "ugly" was a fishy tasting dorade and  a beet salad that looked like the remnants of an earthquake and finally , some of the prices...all entrees containing high cholesterol were  well over $40. The desserts were "just there" and not bad,but not memorable. Athough all of us could afford the high tariffs, which could easily approach $ 100 per person, better cuisine  can be had elswhere for much less. Nevertheless, I would return for the ambience without any great culinary expectations. L'escale is a haven for yachts but not foodies.

One of my favorite restaurants, the atmosphere is relaxed, the staff very attentive and the food.....always good.
I am a profiteroles fan and they make a good one, so I'm always eating something light to have my favorite dessert.
One of the other reasons I go to this place because we can have a quiet conversation without loud music or big noisy crowds.
The intererior is nice, you can go with a date or for a formal business dinner, it's always a safe bet.

Everyone's talking about the drinks and the bar life .... what about the food???

The bar crowd DOES tend to range, but my girl friends and I go right around happy hour and sit down for a good meal with good service and by the time we're finished ..... say 7 or 8 --- they've all pretty much vacated the premises on most days, and it's easy to relax and enjoy an after dinner drink without squeezing through a crowd.  If you do plan to attend .... it is mostly dress to impress --- but isn't that what's part of the fun in an upscale out door bar???  I mean really, how many of these even exist around here?

Let's talk food and more ----

The menus seasonally change and the specials are usually never to be missed out on.... I've had some deep fried squash flowers with killer sauce but the one thing that should never be missed if you can catch it on the menu is the truffled pasta .... once at a table with 6 -- 4 had the pasta, and if you were within 25 feet of our table, you'd probably get full just smelling the stuff .....

Service is always personable and prompt, with little to nothing to complain about.

Oh -- and please order the souffle in advance, unless you like to loiter at your table after dinner. :)

If you want an ordinary meal (and/or drinks) for an extraordinary price, this place is for you.  They must think that acting like the place is superior makes it superior.  On two separate occasions, when asking for a recommendation, the server has told me "well, this is a four star restaurant, so everything is good."  Yeah... okay.  Unfortunately, as a business traveler staying at the Delamar (otherwise a good hotel, btw), this is the only convenient option.  That people in the town frequent this place, however, makes me wonder about the quality of the Greenwich dining options generally.

So my family and I went for a final graduation dinner, and we felt like we were brought into some James Bond movie off some random coast in a shoreline bed and breakfast setting.  The ambiance here is very boat-oriented with a mediterranean feel.  Perfect atmopshere to enjoy the coast on a nice day.

Though the food isn't the GREATEST of all, it's very reasonably priced and the care taken into small things is nice, after you overlook certain mishaps.  GREAT service to counter the small mistakes along the way.  A few bumps were in our path to a great meal, but many small perks were offered as well.  Dirty table clothes were countered by complimentary olive tapenade and 4 different types of bread; mighty tasty.

Offerings were the classics, though prepared well.  Appetizers: clams, oysters, smoked salmon, mussels; all were prepared fine, but nothing crazy attempted... just nice solid light appetizers.  Entrees faired about the same, classics done solid.  Crisp duck breast with foie gras ravioli was exactly what you'd expect.  Super crisp skin, tender duck breast, somewhat sweet foie gras laced pasta.  Salmon entree was sadly very plain.  Halibut in lobster broth was pretty awesome.  Rich, rich broth sitting under a nice tender piece of halibut.

So overall, the entrees offered some tasty eating, but nothing past what you'd expect out of good quality seafood.  Creativity would have played nicely into the selections, but with all things taken into consideration, the restaurant makes a fine execution for a celebration dinner, date night, or even just a night out on the town.. if you're chock full of Greenwich money.

    Well...we had our wedding here.

    First the good:
L'Escale is really close to my parents house, and it's sentimental for me that it was the old Showboat and was a staple of growing up in Greenwich. When I called to ask if the dogs were allowed to be part of our ceremony, they were really accommodating. The entire initial visit made it seem like this was by and far the right choice. The location is unbeatable, the ability to have our dogs be part of the event, the water, the ceremony...it was great.

    Now, the bad:
Mid-way through the planning process, they started dropping the ball. Truth be told, had we not given the non-refundable deposit, we would have bailed. The superior flexibility they promised fell by the wayside as they started charging us for every little thing. We wanted to have my parents join us for the tasting and they gave us a really hard time about this even though we didn't ask them to make any extra food. They tried to charge us $75 per person - ridiculous considering we could eat in the restaurant for cheaper than that. They finally relented and said they would allow them to join us and as it turned out, they threw a TON of food out anyway, because they cooked to show us portions, but didn't serve any of that - they just let it sit there to show us while we nibbled on the portions they put out.

All along the way they promised to send a vendor list which never arrived in either my email or my husbands. They got snippy with us and insisted they sent it - we were receiving other emails, but not the vendor list. We both have 2 different email servers, so it was hard to believe both our servers sent it to spam, but that's what they said. When my husband finally said, "Just fax it" they faxed it all right. They sent 2 blank pages through the fax machine. I was ready to just rip my hair out.

We wanted to offer our guests the filet mignon for the $8 upcharge. They said they could calculate how many filets were ordered and just charge $8 times that number. But they they called back and said that no matter who ordered what, for every single guest we would pay the additional $8. They also said that it would cost us additional to have a dance floor, and we just got really disgusted with the entire process.

They kept telling us we hadn't signed the contract when we in fact had, and I had a copy of it on my computer, and they kept asking us to sign it and sending earlier (wrong) versions. It was totally frustrating, and she tried to pin it on me and said, "You're stressed." No. I'm not. I'm dealing with someone who is late to meetings, totally incompetent, can't use a fax machine or email anything, can't accommodate my parents who encouraged us to select this venue and can't remember one day to the next. Lest you think I'm a bridezilla, let me tell you how I was with all the other vendors:

Photographer had free reign, we let her do whatever she wanted because we trusted her.
Cake / Bakery - we told them to do whatever they wanted for decorations and they did, and we totally trusted them.
Music - told the guys to wing it and they did.
Flowers - they showed up and asked what we wanted on the cake and I told her to do whatever she felt was best.

I had no preconceived ideas about anything other than throwing a nice dinner party style wedding for close friends and family. In fact, we had a bunch of kids jumping on us during our dance. I was so laid back about the whole wedding, and this one part was a nightmare.

Then, 3 weeks before the wedding, she was adamant that I tell everyone they need to enter through the hotel side, and not the restaurant side. Um...this information would have been WAY MORE HELPFUL to know earlier so I could include with the invites. I had to email everyone last minute to tell them. Like I needed more crap to do.

During our ceremony on the deck, the bar on the other side of the wall was so loud, none of our guests could hear anything. It was embarrassing. I know the restaurant was in full swing, but I'm surprised they didn't account for this at all by putting up more walls or coming up with some other alternative so that our guests could hear the ceremony. Our officiant only took 4 minutes, literally, I would think if they said to the guests on the restaurant/bar side, "do you mind there's a wedding on the other side of the wall," that the people would have been more than happy to quiet down for a couple minutes.

The only thing that made up for this was the fact that the location is great, the food was fantastic and Chang, who ran our event, was amazing and the servers were great. Very detail oriented and on top of all of it.

Edited to add: My friend told me that when we got to our vows, they went to the other side of the wall and asked the guests to keep the noise level down. I didn't notice this because it still seemed really loud to me, and you could only hear the bar noise behind us from the restaurant guests on video.

My girl goes here for happy hour sometimes and we always talked about going for dinner one night.  A few nights ago, we decided to check it out and we were very pleased with the experience.
They first sat us in the main dining room, but it was too formal.  The room was too bright, and it was too quiet - we felt exposed.  We prefer a cozier, warmer subdued setting.  She recalled that there are tables in the bar area -so we requested one.  The hostess was very nice and responsive and immediately took us to the bar area and it was a massive improvement.  I suggest you eat in the bar lounge.  Alot more casual atmosphere and more laid back.  Not to mention the outstanding people watching opportunities.  The creme de la creme of the convalescent set was at the bar. A group of 6 or so septuagenarians women were drinking up a storm and gossiping the whole time.  Was not annoying and actually added to the experience.
The food is fairly classic french - or should I say, American french.
We started with an order of the Foie Gras, the crispy rock shrimp and a salad.  All were very good, particularly the Foie Gras.  Outstanding.  The rock shrimp were good, but the portion was huge and it got filling so we didnt finish them all.    I order the duck and my girl ordered the seafood risotto.  Both were really great - her risotto was the winner. Very rich and surrounded by fresh mussels.
For dessert we were a bit disappointed.  We ordered the Dame Blanche (which is a brownie and ice cream) but it came as a parfait and was frankly bland and had very little brownie.
But overall, the food was excellent, the service was great, the atmosphere was good as long as you stay in the bar lounge.
    I say, oui.

Next to the Delamar Hotel. One night at the bar for a nightcap - cozy place, but wait staff not especially welcoming. Breakfasted there 2 mornings (though coming from the hotel next door it was hard to know exactly how to enter the dining room); tea ok (but would expect loose, whole leaf tea at those prices) delicious fresh squeezed orange juice; buttery yummy pastry basket (though very little in the way of low sugar, whole grain options); service professional, but cool; faux provencal decor could use a fresh coat.  A shame that on a sunny, mild, beautiful morning, tables were not set up outside - fabulous location along the water. Next time I'll go up the street to Versailles for a taste of their amazing pastries.

L'escale proves that appearances are not everything.

Sure it's gorgeously decorated, with antique like finishes on the walls and faded paint doors, and located on the waterfront. I bet on a sunny day, L'escale would be the place to go and sip some breezy alcoholic drinks out on the porch. The gigantic fireplace also lends a nice touch to the atmosphere and with the addition of valet parking, L'escale seems to be a five star restaurant.

    Keyword: seems.

That was definitely not the case today. Nevermind that it was raining outside, I was content with sitting indoors. I was impressed with the decor; the huge warm fireplace was a big plus on such a depressing day. I was also starving since the drive from Queens took over an hour.

I ordered a hot chocolate, the soup of the day which was french onion and a side of greens drizzled in balsamic vinegrette. The hot chocolate was delicious, tasted rich but not too overwhelming. The french onion was a huge portion, with a ton of cheese melted on top. Normally most people think the more cheese the better but that did not apply in this case. There was just too much cheese everywhere. I also think that the soup was on the sweeter side. As for the salad, one would think that you cannot mess up on balsamic vinegrette since its just the balsamic vinegar blended with olive oil. It was presented beautifully but tasted extremely sour. I have a high tolerance for sour things too but this made my face pinch after every bite. I had to ask for the salad plain with dressing on the side. After getting two more people on my table to taste the dressing, they all agreed that the dressing was pretty bad. One of the people I came here with had leftover maple syrup from their french toast and poured their syrup right into my salad dressing bowl. Surprisingly it tasted a whole lot better and I could finish it. I figure with the amount of money being spent on my plain side salad ($12), they would at least get the most important part right.

Another note: I had to ask them for new forks TWICE because there was this dried crusted stuff on them that I could flick off with my nail. GROSS.

Wouldn't come here again even if the meal was free. I'd have to eat it with my hands anyway.

A great place for the happy hour on the water. During the summer they have an outdoor bar and very nice marina view seating. Food is always good, never a disappointment. The crowd is mainly 50+, think Boca Raton snowbirds.

Great location, decor, bar and restaurant.  Upscale and older clientele.  Lovely waterside patio, serene interior and lively bar.  Stay away from the crabcakes, but otherwise the menu has been a winner time and time again.

CORPORATE DINERS Beware - I had reservations at L'escale for a business meeting. It was canceled prior to me getting there. I spoke with the manager Mark and due to an error on their part by not including enough space for a private party.

My reservation was canceled and no real offer by the restaurant to make amends. Since I am not able to move my meeting and getting another reservation at another restaurant with such late notice is difficult. I am very disappointed with this place.

We decided to have our wedding reception at L'Escale after having good experiences here over the past few years. The location is great - the food is generally good, etc. However, we have never been more put-off by the staff. Darrah in particular was awful. They were not responsive to inquiries about their services, absolutely rude and the exact opposite of accomodating. I can't even imagine how bad they would have been AFTER we were paying clients, when their 'salespeople' were so bad. We walked in to sign on the dotted line (ready to spend tens of thousands on the event) and left completely dis-enchanted. Needless to say, we are taking our business elsewhere.

This was my third time back and I would not have returned except I was being taken out for dinner as a birthday gift by two other couples. My past experiences have been average. Beautiful setting, plesant crouwds and a good selection on the menu. In the past the food has not lived up to the price but I didn't have bad food just OK. On the evening of May 15th we had the most ridiculous and unplesant situation occur that is mind blowing.  I ordered the $40 filet mignon. I asked for it Med. to med. rare. It comes out and it's still raw in the midle. These things happen. Send it back and when it returns it's well done. That however isn't the bad experience. I show the waiter the steak and he apologiezes for the error but I pass on anything else since everone is about done with dinner. The manager comes by and my host explains the problem and the manager apologies. Two minutes later the manager comes back with the waiter and says therre's a problem. The waiter says I ate the steak. Unbelieveable. This goes beyond unprofessional. I was a guest and had nothing financial to gain but to question a dinners integrity publicly is way out of bounds. I only hope this gets to the owner and they retrain their staff in how to treat a customer in an awkward situation. I also hope my host disputes the bill since they refused to take the ruined steak off the bill.
