For date night or special event/holiday you cannot go wrong. Be prepared to be pampered by the waitstaff and awed by the kitchen. Each course is more delightful than the next and in keeping with tradition & his father, Chef does not go wrong.

For a lighter/casual experience try Jacques' Brasserie at L'Auberge. (located downstairs of the main restaurant) The same phenomenal quality, taste and experience is delivered....

I feel the charm of French Provincial countrysides, each & every time.

Based on my first visit, I would have given Chez Francois 5 stars, but I am downgrading to 3 because I think they have become lazy. The meal was good overall, and very good service, but when you go here, you are expecting it to be perfection. This meal was not.

You must be prepared for a big meal because you will be eating a lot of food with a lot of courses. The first time I ate there, I was really impressed by the menu and I loved the food. This time, I was a little underwhelmed and disappointed. The menu appeared to be the exact same as when we went a couple years ago. I really was hoping for some new, innovative options. I think cooking the same old food for so long has probably gotten them to fall into patterns and become lazy.

For the amuse bouche, we got a small quiche, which was a little chewy and kind of boring. I ordered the asparagus appetizer and my husband the beef cheeks. The beef cheeks were great, but they were missing the mushrooms I remember them having last time. The asparagus was good, but it looked very unappetizing. They certainly did not seem to care about presentation at all, and for the price tag, they really should have made it more beautiful!

I had the tomato salad, which was very good. The tomatoes were marinated so perfectly and were really tender. Again, however, the presentation was lacking. We also ordered a bottle of wine, which was pretty good and very reasonably priced.

For my entree, I had the peppered certified Angus Beef sirloin with Roquefort cheese. It was just okay. I have certainly had a much better steak and nothing about this particularly stood out. What did stand out again, was the presentation. They lined up a few vegetables on the top of the plate and grouped some beans on the side. It just looked really strange and lacked any creativity. The veggies were also a bit overcooked. My husband ordered the lobster, which was good, but not great. They paired it with some citrus, which he really liked.

For dessert, I ordered the chocolate souffle. I was a bit disappointed with it as well. Don't get me wrong, the souffle was perfectly made, but I was just not a fan of the flavor. It was not chocolaty enough and it had a hint of orange that was really off-putting to me. They put a chocolate sauce on it that was the consistency and taste of hot chocolate. It really didn't add to the dish. My husband had the creme brulee, and again, nothing special. A nice touch, they gave us a meringue dessert for our anniversary. Although, since we already both had desserts that came with the meal, we really did not need that. I glass of champagne or another drink would have been nicer.

The service was great as usual, although our server was not quite as attentive as some of the others.

Overall, the meal was a good meal, but when you go to Chez Francois, you expect a great meal. This was not great this time. They really need to step up their game if they want to compete with some of the really good restaurants in the DMV.

Wow! What can I say? This place blew me away. Its reputation precedes it of course. This is definitely haute French cuisine of the old school category. The service staff is impeccable and the whole dining experience is unmatched anywhere I've been in this city or almost anywhere I've ever been. L'Auberge should be the gold standard of what restaurant service ought to be. Our waiter (Mark) was knowledgeable on all the dishes on the menu. He banters with us just the right amount -- not too little, not too much. We felt like we were being treated like royalty.

First off, some basics about this place. Although they do offer A la carte, dinner here is generally a 5 course fixed price affair. There are the Appetizer, Salad, Main, Dessert, and Coffee/Tea courses. You pick your Main dish that has the 5-course price affixed to it (anywhere form $60+ to over $100).  Then if you pick the Appetizer, Salad and Dessert that's within the choices for the fixed price deal then there is no extra charge (except for tax & tip of course). However, there are a few special items on the Appetizer, Salad, and Dessert that would entail extra charge. I.e. the Chocolate Souffle (highly recommend btw!!) is one of those special desserts that has an extra fee to it.

My husband ordered a half bottle of red that was $70 (if I had known I would have protested!!).  A few extra treats came with the meal.  An "amusee bouche" is served right at the start. For us it was a bite size slice of Onion Tart -- very tasty.  I ordered the Roquefort Cheese Tart w/ caramelized apples and my husband got the Wygu beef cheek stew for Appetizers. The standard Mesclun Salad came next (very good btw! just the right amount of dressing). At this point in the meal they brought us a little scoop of lemon sorbet to cleanse the palate before the main dish.  I got the lobster w/ lumps of crab meat in a citrus sauce and hubbie got the lamb. Both very good.  A small side of cream of carrots was served with the mains for us to share.  With all the extras we were slowing down considerably at this point. I couldn't even finish my very delicious lobster (although I tried very hard coz I hate wasting food).  We had pre-ordered the Choc. Souffle at the beginning of the meal as this dessert takes a little time to prepare.  So, we picked the Strawberry Tart (special of the day) for the other dessert. Our waiter asked if this meal was perhaps for a special occasion and we replied that is was in fact an early anniversary dinner - Mistake!! He then brings us another dessert on the house! A scoop of choc. ice cream w/ whipped cream, meringue, and a few berries, raspberry coulis.  So, now we're sitting in front of 3 desserts!  We were actually stuffed already at this point but the Choc. Souffle was so delicious I couldn't resist.

WARNING!!! This place is super, uber expensive!! With tip ($40), the bill came to almost $300!!! That's just for 2 people! We'll need several years to save up before we consider coming here again; unless we have a very wealthy sponsor willing to take us then we'll be game. But totally worth it for a fine dinning experience.

I took my wife here for her birthday.  She loves foie gras and she picked L'Auberge Chez Francois for her birthday dinner because they have it on their menu along with good reviews.
Our overall experience was terrific for this special occasion, just as most of the reviews mentioned.
The foie gras appetizer was good sized.
I was feeling a little adventurous and ordered the veal sweetbreads, which was very delicious.
Definitely do not come here if you are on a budget or watching what you spend.  Our tab for 2, was $250 with tip.  It would have been a little higher, but fortunately they had a 50% off sale on all their wines.

I have been to the main dining room and the Brasserie many times and love them both! Everyone is so kind and friendly, the decor is so authentic, it makes me feel like I'm on a French vacation.  And the food... oh the food. It is so good that I find myself eating until I can no longer move. These folks know how to do it!

The dining room is definitely pricey but I go here for just about every special occasion that I can. The brasserie is my go to for a random weekday date night with my hubs. Won't break the bank but such a cozy, romantic atmosphere.

This is one of those places where you know that no matter what you order it's going to be incredible. Best food I've had since I left San Francisco. Yes it's expensive, and I don't care for the atmosphere (more geared towards an older crowd) but it doesn't matter once you have that first bite of deliciousness. The patio outside looks really cute/romantic (strings of white lights, lots of trees) and I wish it had been warmer so we could sit out there.

Having grown up off Springvale Rd. in Great Falls, L'Auberge Chez Francois was where my family celebrated life's special occasions and achievements. So, sentimentally, I'll always love it for the good times I've spent there with people I love.

Now, as an adult (and the one responsible for footing the bill), I'm so pleased to say that the level of service, attention to detail, atmosphere and food have remained unchanged, and the high standards of this great place as static as ever.

I still love the "big" restaurant, but this review is about Jacques' Brasserie. I'll be brief - it's different, but just as special as the upstairs. I simply adore the servers there, and last night, M. Haeringer greeted my friend and I as we sipped champagne (chi-chi, I know). You still get the delicious garlic bread (why/how is it sooooo good?!), the house champagne aperitif, and a somewhat truncated, less expensive, but still diverse menu. We opted for light fare (salads), and I want you to consider this (this!) a rave about the duck salad. You can order the souffles, just like in the big restaurant, and the full dessert menu is presented (a creature of habit, I always have the kugelhopf).

Here's a gripe for those folks critiquing the decor - um, perhaps you'd prefer to continue dining at P.F. Chang's, then? This is a rather authentic Alsatian interior, non? I understand that the atmosphere is important (see paragraph 2), and here, it's on point - but rightfully outshined by more important things - service and food.

Will definitely be back, and will consider doing so for champagne and desserts. Wonderful!

Takes you right to a secluded restaurant in a small town France.

It is not easy to find a nice french restaurant in D.C. metro area. We had watched a show on PBS about great restaurants in D.C., and L'Auberge Chez Francois was featured in the show along with Little Inn in Washington and other fantastic restaurants in DC. So, we decided to have a early christmas dinner with family at the L'Auberge Chez Francois.

Tucked in a small residential area in Great Falls, we found this place easily because the entire place was lit up with christmas lights!! I had an ambivalent feeling toward this lighting - I thought it was tacky..but at the same time magical..... is that possible?

We were welcomed by staff when we entered the restaurant. It was monday, so it was pretty quite. We were able to pick our table in the main dining area next to the fire place. It was wonderful.

I really like their system. You pick an entree. Appetizer, soup, dessert of your choice all come with your appetizer. So, at the end, your bill really does not tear your wallet out. Great affordable wine list is available, too. This fancy restaurant won't break your bank account. Take your gals out to L'Augerge Chez Francois, boys!! They will fall in love with you all over again!

The food is absolutely french classic delicious - lip smacking sauces, butter-like meat, wonderful medley of vegetables and seafood... My mouth is getting watery just thinking about it. :p

When I cook at home - we use no salt or very little salt. So, we found the food a little bit salty - but compare to other restaurants..not salty at all.

I had the lamb dish, my husband had the tenderloin dish, my mother had the Christmas classic goose, and my sister had the lobster dish. We were being amateur dinners, and tasted everyone's food. :) It all tasted fantastic to me! I really like the tenderloin dish though. Very Very yummy.

I don't want to forget about the cow cheek stew (one of the appetizers) - everything just melted in your mouth. Crazy delicious!

Overall experience was excellent. I definitely recommend this place for your special days. You will enjoy food, service, and atmosphere.

As a culinary destination (because it is really suburbia out there).  I would place this restaurant among one of the places in Washington DC that you must eat if you are a real foodie...or maybe just a snooty!

The clientele is definitely not your run of the mill mid 30's to 40's.  Its definitely older and of course with reason.  This restaurant has been open since the 1954's once removed to it's current location, once shut down by a fire, and it's still open.

I love coming here because it reminds me of the type of restaurant that you do want to patron for that special occasion, anniversary, graduation, romantic dinner.  It is a special event place or a place to go if you want to have the Chateaubriand served table side, or almost any of the classically prepared french dishes that you can remember from a time long past.

Garlic croutons, and cottage cheese spread..is so good you will want to load up but try to contain yourself man!  There are many apps here and among the few are the lobster bisque and the french onion soup, they are both delicious and should not be overlooked as well.

Remember it is a set menu, so you pick 1 app, 1 salad, and the from the right pick an entree.  All in all it is quite good and I have to also add that they have a rather extensive wine list so really try to savor the flavors of food and drink.  Remember they also have appertifs so please enjoy them as well to really get the full spectrum of the meal.

    Cheers and happy eats!

I love this place. it never changes. which could be a bad thing, but not when the kitchen puts out stinkin' world-class souffles, every-stinkin'-time, and never fudges the Perfectly Executed Classics like the foie gras and choucroute. it's the 1st place I ever had sweetbreads and squab (truthfully labeled as 'pigeon' here), and I credit the kitchen for any latitude in the palate I now have.

I've been celebrating birthdays, big- and small- days here ever since I can remember, and while normally I cringe at the sight of rambunctious lil' 'uns at restaurants, here it just gives me a warm fuzzy to think that the next generation is learning to appreciate this amazing place.

We only went for lunch on Saturday, and had a nice time, but I really wouldn't call it one of the best restaurants in the DC area. Maybe it's the ridiculously long drive here that makes people hungrier and enjoy their food more?

Everything about this restaurant is very country-style, from the almost tacky decor to the plain jane presentation of the food.

Major points for Francois for offering my absolute favorite dessert - souffle - and absolutely nailing it. But other than that, nothing really wowed me about this place. If you're deciding to go, I recommend checking out the pictures of the dining room first. If you're cool with it, then you'll probably have a nice time.

This restaurant's quality has been outstanding for the 30+ years that we've known it (it was there for a bit longer and previously in DC since 1954).  They have excellent dishes such as "choucroute", duck, lobster, and wonderful desserts.  The choucroute is of comparable quality as those I've eaten in Strasbourg (Alsace) or Paris.

Today, I decided not to get the souffle for dessert, which is excellent, and opted for a soft meringue:  delicious!

In a way, I'm happy that I don't live closer . . . it would be very hard to resist not going there more often!

Also, and very importantly, the service is very good.  They let you finish what you're eating before bringing you the next dish (what a concept!), and they do not expect you to remove your dishes so that they can stick the next plate in front of you (like it is with American so-called "service").  The customers get to enjoy food as opposed to quickly shove it down.

It is expensive, but definitely worth it.  A very enjoyable experience all around.

This brasserie is located in the same building as L'Auberge Chez Francois, on the lower level.  The brasserie is available so that you may order an appetizer or entree a la carte, instead of having to commit to the full six course meal available at L'Auberge Chez Francois.

We were seated and given menus.  We ordered a Lobster Bisque and a Roquefort Salad to start, and held off ordering our entrees until after our appetizers came.  Both were tasty, but it wasn't until we received the check that I realized I was actually given a Caesar salad.

We ordered the bouillabasse and the pinot noir short ribs.  The bouillabase was very nice, as was the short rib, but the short rib dish was very sparse.  A few vegetables at the top, and about 4 oz of short rib.  When we ordered the entrees, we also ordered a side of fries, but when the entrees came out, there were no fries.  We told the person who delivered our food that we were missing the fries we ordered.  They came out about 10 minutes later.

We drank a glass of their cotes du rhone and pinot noir.  Both were quite nice and reasonably priced ($8.50 and $12 respectively).

At no point while we were eating did our waiter ever check back to ask if we were enjoying everything, although he did refill waters sufficiently.

We ordered dessert, the special of the evening.  I told the waiter, "we'll have the special dessert".

"One?" he asked.  "Yes." I confirmed.

Moments later our waiter came out and presented two special desserts...."A bouche for each of you".

I thought perhaps he had heard my wife say that it was my birthday....or that he wanted to add a nice touch to apologize for forgetting our fries.

Wrong.  Our waiter is apparently deaf, or was figuring we wouldn't complain when presented with the other dessert.  Of course, we were charged for two.  We didn't bother saying anything, because we had made the incorrect assumption, that our waiter could hear us.

The decor of this place, as has been stated about L'Auberge Chez Francois, is a bit dated.

I suppose if you're in the Great Falls area, Jacques' Brasserie is an ok choice.  But certainly nothing to write home about, and the service we received was mediocre at best.

Very French Country Inn with sort of a dated decor is what you will be met with when you come here to dine.  Friendly staff greets you with all smiles  as you are seated.  Reservations are highly recommended as we made ours a few days before and were only able to get a 915 seating  They boast a six course meal for a very reasonable price.  If you come here for nothing else, the amount and quality of food you get is a great value.

Service was really prompt and flowed quite well.  No awkward pauses in between courses, everything just flowed well.  I didn't feel rushed and I also didn't feel like dinner service was slow either, it was really on point.  I thought the food was pretty good, but the lobster bisque was quite salty.  I couldn't finish it.  I also would recommend that you make sure to come here with an empty stomach because they not only have six courses, but the portion sizes are quite substantial plus they give you bread.  I couldn't finish dessert (the hazelnut cake) and I also couldn't finish my main (the sirloin) but I didn't feel weird taking it home.  It made for a wonderful lunch!

Overall, this is a nice place to come for a special occasion and I would recommend it.   I quite enjoyed my time here and I would come back again.

An institution in the DC area, L'Auberge is situated back in the woods of Great Falls. It's an isolated location that underscores how leagues apart it is from the multitude of highly-marketed, flashy chain restaurants of today's day and age.
Upon pulling up to L'Auberge, one gets a view of this large white house, adorned with wood paneling, red trim, and topped with a French flag.
The restaurant is wide open, and though it has high ceilings and large windows that lend nicely to the atmosphere, the furniture, the rug, and the curtains make the restaurant feel a bit dated. Clearly, it's catering to an older clientele, which is fine. But understand that this is true upscale, so take a trip to this place seriously and dress well.
It's also best to understand that you're going to spend a fair amount of money on this place. If you're good with that, you're going to have a fine time. This is one of the elite restaurants in the DC area, and one of the oldest. It's staffed completely by professionals who take their jobs seriously. Consult with their resident wine expert before choosing a bottle. He's very helpful.
Nothing you're going to get here is going to be bad. And for the price, it shouldn't be. As far as I've seen, the menu doesn't change that often. If you haven't tried something before that you see on the menu (like foie gras, frog legs, escargots, etc) now may be the best time to try it.
For my taste, it's a little stuffy but can be great for a romantic evening.

Took me long enough to write a review of this gem! My first and most recent time here was a little before Valentine's Day of this year but I can still remember every detail of the wonderful meal. I will have to cut this review short or this might turn out to be more of an essay or thesis paper. (Pictures are posted)

I immediately felt at ease as our waitress introduced herself to us. She was friendly and very knowledgable of each entree. My boyfriend and I are new to French dining therefore we felt a little out of place and also because we were the only Asians in the entire restaurant. She assured us that everything will be okay even if things may seem intimidating. She brought out our Pinot Noirs and basket of assorted breads and garlic breads and we then began the hardest process: picking our appetizers and main entrees; everything looked so good and I just wanted to order everything!

To start out, we had quiche which was a compliment of the chef. I've never had quiche before this event so I cannot give an expertise opinion on it, however, it was nothing too special...it was just edible and was something to coat the stomach.

For my appetizer, I had the seashell with shrimp, crabmeat, lobster, scallop, salmon with a herb remoulade sauce. It was smaller than what I had hoped for. The flavors were on point, not overbearing the seafood itself. The seafood were also very fresh and delicate.

After the appetizer came the salad which I ordered the Roquefort cheese salad. It was, by far, the best salad I had ever had. I loved the fresh ingredients and the pairing of fresh vegetables and fruits. The cheese added a kick to it and the creamy but light dressing glued everything together.

Before heading onto the main entree, a palette cleanser was brought out which was a grapefruit sorbet. It was nice and refreshing and prepared my appetite for the main entree which was a rack of lamb with herbs de Provence, vegetables, and tarragon sauce. I was not disappointed at all for ordering this dish over the many other marvelous dishes. Most people do not like the smell and taste of lamb but I find it very unique. The lamb was cooked perfectly and it barely had that grassy taste/smell that most lamb has. The seasoning accommodated the lamb very well, allowing me to fully appreciate the natural sweetness of the meat. I was pretty full after the appetizers that I had to have the rest of my lamb to bring home.

For dessert I HAD to order the hazelnut soufflé after hearing so many great things about it on here! It was very fulfilling and not too heavy, especially after the previous dishes that I had. We were also served complementary champagne for our early Valentine's day celebration as well as omplementary Mignardises (Chocolate truffles and Tuiles).

The bill came out to be close to $200 after tip and taxes but to me it was well worth it. They gave generous portions (except for my appetizer) and everything tasted amazing with no complaints! Service was also excellent!

I would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to celebrate an event, it is definitely a treat!

This is one of those places you've always wanted to come, yet never had the chance.
Luckily, I had the chance last week.

Great atmosphere, Definitely a Cut, Cozy "French Country Inn" as its namesake implies.
Greeted at the door, and sat professionally, though a bit tight seating, there was room to breathe a bit, and to take in the surroundings.
The room had life to it, and felt great, covered with the dust of a thousand stories that have been told here during the courses of a meal.
We all enjoyed the bread that was brought out, and little did we know when we saw the butter, that this was a herald of the night before us.

The wine list is, in my opinion, is very Boring, hard to read, and for the most part, not the highest mark ups I have seen, and easy for those already choking on the price of the evening, to acquire decent wines that wont kill the budget.
Though for such a tiny list, it could be more French heavy, as it should be.
The selection of wines available to Virginia now, as well as the cost effectiveness of a lot of great French wines, should be considered, and implemented in a French Country inn.

The corkage fee, at the writing of this review was 40$ which, if you buy multiple wines off of their menu, should be waived, as you are not taking from their business, at all. Alas, it is not, so be prepared.

The Staff was great, professional and courteous, the food took a wee bit longer to come out then we expected, so arriving at 6:30 and leaving at 10:30 for a 3 course meal seemed a bit much.

Everyone really enjoyed the appetizers, and there was a lot to pick from.
I really enjoyed the Tomato salad, as it was both visually appealing, and had most interesting Radish sprouts, and Enoki mushrooms sprinkled atop, with gave both a earthy and spicy presence. I do highly recommend this app.

    ---Interlude---

    Next course: Entrees

Most of us had Fish Dishes, and with all honesty, were not as good as we had wanted them to be. The meats at the table were perfect, Temps were on time, and the cuts spot on. Though, as I said before, by this time we were starting to get highly burned out on the butter in everything.
    * Note. That said, French Cooking does have a real Love for butter as a base, So this is to be expected.

Dessert: Awesome. as a lover of Creme Brulee, There is a fine line between a good brulee, and Scrambled eggs.
    This was right on target.
Soufflee comments were good as well.

Presentation was a 10 on everything.

    Wine service was a 10

    Wait staff was a 10

The only Flaws were what I have already written in the review.

This is a place one must goto at least once.
Be prepared. It will cost you.

Good food and good service.  We went for Valentine's Day and ordered what seemed like everything from the appertifs to the chocolate souffle and baked Alaska.  The foie gras, charcuterie, wagyu, and rockfish were superb.  The french onion soup and salad were seasoned perfectly.  It's hard to find a restaurant that has consistently good service and food.  I would highly recommend for a special occassion!

Celebrating an anniversary last night was made so special by the superb  service and excellent meal.  From the aperitif to the appetizers, the entrees and all the special in-between little courses.  Atmosphere was totally French and well worth the price.  More expensive than our usual outings but worth every penny and we are looking for excuses to return.

Maybe giving 5 stars to this place and 4 to Komi makes me lame, but: I went here tonight for my birthday with my parents and boyfriend, and our meal for 4 cost as much as my bf's and my Komi meal for 2. L'Auberge is great value for the money; the service is sweet and sincere; the drive out there is fun; the food is reliably delectable. I love it here.

I've been coming here for meals 2-3 times a year since I was about 10 years old. Little has changed: on a Sunday night, most of the people in the dining room are nonagenarians, and the food is probably exactly the same as what it was when L'Auberge opened up, like, 50 years ago. But who cares? It's a place for tradition and family and coming back to again and again through the years to enjoy exquisite Alsatian cooking. It's the cool grandmother that you love to visit, whose house reminds you of some of your best times as a kid. And the chateaubriand is to die for.

My husband took me here for a Sunday birthday brunch.  It was worth the 3 hr drive.  I couldn't believe how much wonderful food we got for the price.
I had the Lobster Omelet as the main course, and he had the Lamb Chops.  This food is seriously old school French, and I feel like there aren't many restaurants of its kind out there anymore.
The service staff were amazing.  The restaurant has a very cute atmosphere (think 'France in Epcot,' in a good way).

Remember when you were a kid and wanted nothing more than to be promoted from the kiddie table to eat with the adults? For years you stared longingly at all the grown ups, fantasizing about just how awesome it would be to eat amongst them? No matter how ready you thought you were, you knew someone would have to die before you could get your chance... and that made you sad.

Once you finally got your chance, you approached the meal like a wide-eyed doe ready to be wowed by all the wonders aching to be bestowed upon you. You were almost giddy at the opportunity, hoping for an amazing experience... but reserved in your exuberance by a slight pang of nervous trepidation. Surely, if it wasn't Great, it would still be great. Right?

Sitting at the table, you quickly realize this is nothing like the kids' table. People talk different, act different and even though you're eating amongst octogenarians, you feel like this is where you were meant to be all along. Then there's the food. It's a world away from what you're used to and while somewhat cliche, it's still fantastic. There are things you're not crazy about (how do grown ups eat that stuff, anyway?) but overall it's a wonderful experience because it's Exactly What You Expected.

That's what it was like for me at L'Auberge.

Having lived in France and enjoyed Alsatian cuisine, we have been delighted to have the Auberge some half hour driving time from us. There are so many French, Italian, Mexican and Japanese restaurants in the US that are owned and managed by other than the expected nationality and which do an almost OK job but lose in the translation. The beautiful Auberge has lost nothing and is the home of the real McCoy.

We particularly enjoy the out-of-this-world bargain of a prix-fixe lunch on weekdays for about $35. This includes an appetizer, an entree, salad, dessert and a glass of wine - and the quality is up to their dinner menu.

We became true believers in this restaurant after our daughter's recent wedding. It was a modest but lovely occasion with some 45 guests. We had considered some local restaurants and country clubs which have the facilities for wedding parties. For $100 plus per person we would get a room - generally minimally inviting -  and the usual choice of rubber chicken, salmon or beef. We finally decided on the Auberge which prepared a lunch for some $75 per person plus wine tip and tax. This included hors d'oeuvres passed before the lunch. We were concerned that the restaurant's offering of the regular menu to each guest would not really be practical and would result in confusion and delay.

Well, as it turned out we absolutely could not have been more delighted.  Guests ordered appetizers including smoked salmon, prosciutto and Virginia ham, pate' and vegetarian fare. This was followed by salads, the full array of entrees including succulent lamb chops, piquant steak au poivre, Alsatian Choucroute, fish and anything on the extensive menu.Service was polite and impeccable and each dish seemed to have received special attention. Following the wedding cake guests actually tasted and then, to our surprise, finished every last bit of a wonderful souffle. The wines complimented the food, the service unfolded without a hitch and no effort was made to cut short our nearly four hour stay at the Auberge in an attractive room decorated faithfully in an Alsatian manner.

As the parents of the bride we needn't have worried about one thing. It went off perfectly. The comment of the groom's father that it was the best meal he ever had was typical.

The bottom line is that if you are looking for hearty genuine French Alsatian  cooking expertly prepared and served in lovely surroundings then this is the gem  you have been seeking.

I'm not really sure how this place couldn't get five stars? We each ordered the six course meals and a glass of wine or beer, and were out the door at under $200 before tip. That's really not terrible when you consider the amount of food that you're getting. If some people are leaving here spending $400-500 for two people, you're doing something horribly wrong.

I got the game plate, which consisted of boar medallion, venison chop, bison tenderloin, and quail. It was ridiculously amazing. She got the seafood of some sort, which she said was above average but not great. I wasn't impressed with French beer, but it was worth a shot.

The mushroom crepes were really good, as were the veal cheeks. The baked alaska was decadent as well. The service was as you would expect for this price range - very good. I've read that some people call this place stuffy and/or boring. I'm not exactly sure what you expect? If you want flaming Dr. Pepper shots, go to TGI Fridays. The ambiance was great. No screaming kids, no loud/obnoxious people, just a great dinner.

It's the type of place that I would gladly return to once/year for something special.

You know those dishes that serve as high water marks in your own gastronomic timeline?  The ones that you remember for decades and serve as the standard by which all others of its ilk are judged.

Had one of those tonight at L'Auberge Chez Francois.

Beef Wellington Chateaubriand stuffed with Foie Gras.

    It was a religious experience.

Chez Francois seems to pop up out of nowhere in the middle of an upscale Great Falls, VA neighborhood.  Enough Christmas lights outside to bring Santa in that direction, even in January.  Pleasant decor, a bit noisy, but an amicable ambiance and friendly staff.

Amuse bouche was a nice beginning, gruyere quiche, and the tuna tartar appetizer with creme fraiche was tasty.  Bread basket -- well appointed.  La coquille de crustacés was nice, but the server would have done us a solid by telling us it was a cold dish.

Salads were passable.  Sorbet with candied orange rind was a good turn to cleanse the palate prior to the main course.

Poached Maine lobster with jumbo lump crabmeat in a sauternes butter sauce was good, not great.  But - the Wellington...

The beef arrived on a plate that had to be about 250-degrees.  The first cut - the fillet was so soft that the knife had trouble gaining purchase.  The first bite - almost melted prior to chewing.  A nicely prepared crust gave way easily to the most tender, delicious, and well-cooked piece of tenderloin I have ever tasted.  Adding the foie gras was almost criminal.

Sometimes the culinary has the power to cross one over into the transcendent.  When it does, it permits the gastronome to leave behind fork and knife - and enjoy all that is right with the universe.  Thanks Chez Francois for reminding me of that oh so profound truth.

Desert was part of the downhill jog.  A forgettable baked Alaska and a middling creme brulee.  But that didn't matter.  Because as we walked out to the car all of my better epicurean angels had been realigned by one magnificent plate.

Perfect in every regard. How do you beat country French. How do you top a place where the servers seem to out number the guests and where they anticipate your every need. And could there have been more Christmas lights on one building.  Dinner at L'Auberge is the next best thing to traveling to France.

There are a lot of fancy new restaurants in downtown DC that compete for your splurge dining dollars. None of them, however, can compare with the traditional French elegance and consistent quality that Auberge has offered for decades.

From the winding roads for northern Virginia to the romantic outdoor gardens, everything about this restaurant experience is perfect for creating memorable experiences.

Oh, and the food is incredible. They're not doing any fancy fusion, so if you want to be surprised (pleasantly or not), go to Citronelle. But if you want as near to guaranteed delectable enjoyment, go here.

I've been here three times in the past two years and every time I go the food is to salty.  This place seems to cater towards middle-aged peoples who need a 'romantic' place to go to get away from their screaming kids.

The quality of ingredients is not bad but it is way overpriced and the place has a kitschy vibe. Anyway how does a traditional French Inn not have roast chicken on the menu? Sucks.

Having been to L'Auberge on several occasions (inside diningroom) was pleased to sit outside for a lovely luncheon on a cool July day.  The service was wonderful, great presentation and elegant atmosphere.

But.....the food wasn't that great.  I was not aware that the son of the original owner is now in charge and it shows.  In the past the meal was memorable, this time it wasn't.  Everything else about it was good.

Perhaps the outdoor menu is different because it was prix-fixe.

I will give it another try in the winter when we can sit inside the resaturant itself.

Still a place to keep on your list of musts.

The first thing I have to say about Chez Francois is, if you're planning on drinking more than one glass of wine during dinner, have a designated driver. The dark, twisty road leading up to this restaurant requires one's full attention, and excellent driving skills. The ONLY thing on this road, and anywhere within the surrounding 30 mile radius, is this place.

That being said, it's totally worth the drive, and for that matter, the price.

So here it is, the third installment on my three part French restaurant series.

The only reason I even found out about Chez Francois is because it happened to the be the restaurant my French teacher chose for our beginning French class to attend as a group (about 15 of us altogether). We had to speak in French the entire evening, which he warned could easily take up to three hours, and consisted of about five courses. The waiters all spoke in French and the locale was beautifully decorated, all contributing to a very authentic old European feel.

First we were served a plate of assorted bread and spreads. I wanted to save my appetite for all the courses, but I couldn't help myself from having a slice of the delicious garlic bread that was placed right in front of me. Next came a very small slice of potato quiche, compliments of the chef.
For my appetizer I chose the crepe, filled with a mushroom pate and accompanied with a tomato sauce. I had to opt out of the Madeira sauce since the waiter informed me that it had meat in it. Nevertheless, it was amazing and so very delicate. After finishing it, I was pretty full... But I had to man up. I was only one course deep.

Next came a small salad. I wasn't a fan. It tasted a little bitter to me, and frankly, I didn't want to be bothered with salads at this point. The main meal was just around the bend.

But first, we were sent a "palate cleanser" in the form of a small serving of citrus sorbet. Now we were truly ready for the "plate principal".

Since there weren't any vegetarian options on the menu, the chef prepared a special vegetarian dish for the three people in our group that requested it. It turned out to be a sort of Napoleon, or a little tower of vegetables. It was delightful, and although I didn't finish every bite, I did appreciate the fact that the Chef came out to greet our table and explain a thing or two about the preparation of the dish.

After tackling the main dish, it didn't seem possible that there was any room left for dessert, but we ordered one anyway (as it was included in the $54 fixed price menu). I opted for the least decandent option, which was the plum tarte with cinnamon ice cream (plus, I looove cinnamon ice cream). What do you know... I finished every bite. Yes, it was THAT good. My classmates ordered the rich dark chocolate cake, the creme brulee, and the cheesecake. I, however, didn't feel like I had to be jealous of their indulgence since my tarte was so utterly flavorful, I didn't feel like I missed out on anything.

The figurative "cherry on the sundae" came in the form of a small cup of espresso and some cookies and truffles. A perfect ending to un bon soir. No wonder Chez Francois has been on the Washingtonian's top restaurants for five years running.

If I ever feel adventurous enough to tackle the crazy road up to this restaurant again, I will definitely be happy to treat myself to another evening of deliciouse French cuisine.

If you're looking for somewhere truly special to go or are trying to impress guests, there are new nicer places in the DC metro area than L'Auberge Chez Francois, but be ready to pay big for such a level of opulence. Located on a quiet street in Great Falls, you're greeted by a quaint, French Country house like setting. The restaurant itself is divided into a series of dining rooms each with tables of all sizes from intimate tables for two or large tables for bigger groups. The wait staff is expansive a very knowledgable about the menu, they have to go through a lot of training and it shows.

The menu us prix-fixe and the price is determined by your entree. The whole meal is multiple courses from appetizer, salad, quiche, sorbet, main course and finally dessert. Plan to spend a few hours if you decide to dine here. The food comes out quickly but never feels rushed leaving you time for conversation and is always piping hot and fresh. The Dover Sole, Twin Filet Mignon and Lamb are some of my favorites after coming here on multiple occasions over the years. If you want a soufflé for dessert, you must order it along with your main course because, of course, it's fresh and made to order.

Dining here is a very luxurious experience and is definately a special occasion place to eat. Reservations are a must. The dress code is semi-formal, but in general, just dress nicely, no jeans. Plan to spend near $100 per person after drinks, tax, tip and any special desserts or appetizers like the suberb escargots.

What can I say about Chez Francois that hasn't already been said? Washington City Paper writes that "Chez Francois may be the area's last bastion of classic French cuisine." The Washington Post calls it "the grand dame of French restaurants," although "presentation is a little dated." Washingtonian magazine points out that "it's all about nostalgia at this Alsation institution, now in its sixth decade." Critics tend to praise Chez Francois for its service, its superb dishes, and its attention to detail.

My in-laws love to celebrate their wedding anniversary at Chez Francois, so Saturday marked my third time dining there. Tucked away in Great Falls in an old French country-style home, Chez Francois is warm and inviting, especially during the holidays when the nostalgic decor, fireplaces and Christmas lights fit the season perfectly. When you walk in, you're greeted by a trio of employees who offer to check your coat and accompany you to your table. Upon sitting down, you're offered a house aperatif that involves framboise and fresh raspberries.

From there, your appetite will be indulged. Chez Francois offers a six-course prix-fixe dinner menu for the price of the entree, which can range in price from $62 to $74. Specials can carry an additional charge - a tuna tartare was an extra $8, it's not highway robbery by any means.

We nixed the aperatif in favor of wine (a delicious Fess Parker Syrah) and the wonderful house beer special - a Stella blended with amer picon, a bitter, orange-flavored French cordial made from quinine, spices, cinchona bark, oranges and gentiam. It's at once refreshing and citrusy, yet with a hint of spice. The drinks are accompanied by a plate of garlic toast and French bread. The garlic toast is warm, buttery and crispy - top it with the house-made cottage cheese spread to temper the garlicky bite.

The amuse bouche arrives next - a small slice of house quiche. On Saturday, Chef Jacques offered up an onion quiche that was so creamy and fluffy it put eggs to shame.

Then it's time for the appetizer. Chez Francois offers a wide variety of appetizers, including rich, creamy lobster bisque, French onion soup, frog legs, garlicky escargot. Craving something rich and meaty, I ordered the braised veal cheeks. Served in a mini cocotte, the chunks of tender veal cheek were presented in a thick meaty broth with tender root vegetables, much like a miniature beef stew. It was delicious to the point that I was tempted to suck up the liquid with a straw. The hubs had a pleasant caramelized apple tart topped with Roquefort cheese.

The salad de l'auberge offers a nice change of pace, followed by a a small portion of refreshing house-made citrus sorbet to cleanse the palate.

Finally, your entree - no matter if you select fish, duck, beef, rabbit, shellfish, Chef Jacques crafts each dish with attention and care. I had the poached lobster, accompanied by crab meat and asparagus, in a lobster butter sauce. The hubs enjoyed Beef Wellington, which was presented as a tenderloin topped with duxelles and wrapped in a puff pastry. A puree of root vegetables is always presented to the table in a communal serving dish.

Upon finishing, you have the option of selecting dessert, which includes a plum tart, a decadent chocolate yule log, or the famous Chez Francois souffles - followed by coffee or tea. When you think that you could not possibly fit another bite, the water drops off a plate of mignardises - small chocolate truffles and crisp tuiles.

All in all, Chez Francois is a wonderful restaurant for special occasions. While the food can be very rich, you can select dishes that are on the lighter side. Since the portions tend to be smaller, the meal is not as overwhelming as it sounds, but you will certainly leave absolutely, completely, 100-percent full.

I confess to not being a great fan of (often heavy) Alsatian food.  However,  Chef Jacques Haeringer chimes my note. His la Sole de la Manche Belle Meuniere, homard, asperges, champignons des bois, cpres, beurre noisette is truly stunning.  I had dinner here with several friends, and each of the entrees was superbly prepared and presented.  I finished my meal with the Notre traditionelle tarte aux quetsches  l'Alsacienne (plum tart) ... excellent, but very filling (they should provide a gurney ride to the parking lot, following this dessert). The cellar is well-stocked with (those overly sweet) Alsatian wines and the service is quite good.

L'Auberge Chez Francois is very large, very busy, and rather remotely located.  Never attempt dining without reservations.  High marks for quality.
