Review from Clarke J.
Miami, FL
As an avid runner, I only use this facility for the eliptical and stairmaster equipment, primarily yo give some relief to these 50 year old knees. I have always found the staff to be courteous and polite, which is more than I can say for other similar facilities I was a member of in the past, whose overly assertive employees hounded everyone to sign up for their deluxe packages.
I also had a few training sessions here, but it just isn't my thing, Though I found each respective workout to be challenging, bordering strenuous. It's just the right recipe for the serious gym enthusiast. -

There are lots of really attractive women who work out here. Besides that, there is really not much else to go for.
1. Terrible equipment. Old as my grandmother.
2. Messy gym. Weights everywhere. Except there is one cute girl who picks up weights in between her sets. I like her.
3. Staff only there to sell you memberships or personal training. Seriously, they sit there like a pack of lions waiting to pounce. Disgusting.
4. Staff are not fit. Kind of strange when the clientele is more fit than the personal trainers.
5. Smells like as$. And not in the good way, like in the pornos that we all know you watch. Fat guys sweat, and no one cleans. You know what that adds up to.
So please save yourself the money, and join another gym. Or better yet, pay that cute girl who picks up weights for everybody. -
Review from Amber E.
I quit this gym. Not solely based on bad service or quality of the facility, but those aspects did contribute.
I, like most people, don't like to be bothered when I'm at the gym, ESPECIALLY when I have my headphones on and ESPECIALLY when I am on a machine. That did not stop one employee from asking me TWO DIFFERENT TIMES if I wanted personal fitness sessions. I'm not a fatty so it's not like I was a big walking target!! The final straw of annoying was when a waxing vendor (on customer appreciation day, hah!) HARRASSED me. She literally did NOT take no for an answer as I pointed to my headphones and walked away. She put her hand on me, stopped and asked me very personal questions about waxing. WTH?!?!
Then I got a bike and realized far less people bother me when I'm riding it.
THEN today I get a text message from Mustafa (this is the 2nd of it's kind, btw) advertising black friday. I'm assuming this is the same character who continuously called when I first joined. I replied asking to please be removed, I am no longer a member. Two hours later I get the same freaking text. I called LA fitness and reported him so I'm hoping that will end it.

Review from Sergio F.
I have checked out the spa, jacuzzi and consequently the showers - and I need to dock a star (or maybe two).
1. For a while the Sauna was just warm. To their credit, that was fixed. But the fact that the repair only came after I mentioned it on Twitter speaks a sad statement.
2. The men's locker still has a musky smell to it. I don't know what the issue is with the ventilation except to say that it is insufficient.
3. Speaking of the lockers, there are a bunch of lockers - particularly close to the showers - where the doors are falling off the hinges. If it weren't for the no camera policy in the locker rooms, I'd document this.
4. Ah showers...water flow is still a trickle.
5. There's also the issue about of treadmills and ellipticals STILL being out of service.
I keep going there but for convenience of it being very close to my office but I am seriously considering changing gyms. Here's hoping they fix the issues soon enough.Listed in: Please Improve!

Miami Beach, FL
This place really grinds my gears! It's no surprise at all that many of the reviews only "award" a star or two (Congrats, L.A. Fitness at Sunset Place, you earned them!).
While I was a member, I did my best to shrug off the near-total lack of customer service because I only paid $30/month (and this was in 2010). I suppose you pay for what you get. Still, when you tell a gym employee that one of the treadmills needs its belt waxed and is dangerous, you expect him to show at least a modicum of concern instead of unabated blatant disinterest.
If my gym membership contract noted that in case of temporary account suspension I would be charged $10.70 per month, such must have been in the extra-extra-fine print. And that's a big IF. The heavily-tattooed guy who handled my paperwork when I joined certainly did not call my attention to it; I suspect that's because there was nothing to call my attention to.
When I suspended my account (thinking I might, someday soon, start working out at L.A. Fitness again), I asked the employee with whom I spoke if I would be charged for keeping my account suspended. He assured me I would not. When I saw the charge on a recent bank statement, I called L.A. Fitness at Sunset Place and politely asked them to close my account completely and reverse the charge. I was abruptly told--in reprimand-type fashion--that my charge would absolutely not be reversed and that I would have to PHYSICALLY come in to an L.A. Fitness location to close my account completely. Nice.
I went in to L.A. Fitness at Sunset Place to do the deed and the girl at the front desk printed up a form for me to mail to headquarters in Irvine, CA! They've heard of the Internet, of course; they just want to waste your time since you've decided not to give them your business anymore. Big thanks for that, L.A. Fitness at Sunset Place. Please snail-mail headquarters and inform the people there that I will NEVER be joining an L.A. Fitness club again. Ever. And please forward the following letter to headquarters:
"Dear L.A. Fitness,
Thank you SO much for charging me $10.70 a month just to keep my account suspended. I love giving you my hard-earned cash for doing exactly nothing. Depending on whether the aforementioned fine print was actually there, this charge constitutes unjust enrichment or, at the very least, an unlawful and disproportionate penalty clause. Someone should initiate a class-action.
Sincerely yours,
Tate H." -

Well, I have to say that this gym could really do a better job. I have been a member for 5 years but I have been going to this gym for 2 years. In that time I have noticed many things:
Positives-
The hours are convenient
The parking is free for 2 1/2 hours
The basketball courts are nice, although the boundaries are short
It is the cheapest alternative in SoMi/Gables
Negatives-
Machines are not well-maintained, in particular the elliptical machines have a residue on the wheels that cause it to make a loud grinding noise while you are using it. That makes it hard to listen to ipods
Trainers are overly aggressive with the women. My wife practically had to scream rape to get them off her back. They have not been known to harass men so much soliciting their services.
Many people do not put back the weights (I see that mentioned alot) so workouts can take extra time because you have to search for the weights that you need.
They won't refund late charges if your credit card was changed. Be aware that if something happens to the credit card you have on file, you will be charged a non-refundable late fee to your account. This happened to me when someone used my credit card info to make unauthorized charges. The bank then had to give me a new card. LA fitness charged me a late fee. They told me at the gym that I had to speak to a manager to get it removed. When I finally spoke to one, she told me that it could not be done.
I left Bally's to join this club and it is getting worse every year. I keep getting offers from Bally's to join for $10 a month. I might take them up on it. -
Review from Leo C.
San Francisco, CA
In-spite of the negative reviews, I think this gym is pretty good, especially for the price (I pay $45 a month).
I read a lot of negative reviews and the statements are all more or less true, but this place is, in my opinion, still very good. Maybe I haven't been to extremely nice gyms, but for the price LA fitness has a lot to offer and it's clean.
**3 levels**
-3rd level - aerobics/yoga/class rooms, decent basketball court, and an abs area.
-2nd level - cardio equipment, free weights, isolation machines, and smoothie store.
-1st level - A 4 lane 25 meter pool, jacuzzi and some more cardio stuff.
Overall:
The place is clean, a lot of free weights and the equipment is relatively new. The location is pretty convenient also.
Pros: Good equipment, a nice pool, and nice building.
Cons: The staff seems a little brash, there are no towels provided, and the MEMBERS of the gym don't know how to rack their own weights - it's not the staff's fault. -
Review from Mario J.
Coral Gables, FL
Not bad. Especially if you avoid the busy times, which I am able to. It's not unusual to be only one of a handful of people there--if you go at the right time. During peak hours it can be pretty crowded.
My only gripe: The free-weight area can be quite the obstacle course by the afternoon with dumbbells and weight plates strewn all over the place. If they have a "good member" policy, they don't enforce it.
Parking in the garage at the Shops of Sunset is included; must validate your ticket though. Fairly clean facility with a very broad variety of cardio and free weights, all in good condition.
It still rates a 3.75, hence the 4 star rating...Listed in: Hi Freq

Review from Armando A.
Pinecrest, FL
I was a member of this franchise for five years, and recently mailed my cancellation slip. I still remember when I first joined L.A. Fitness, and what a wonderful gym it was. Like someone posted, it was the cheapest alternative to a decent gym in the So. Mia/Gables area. I still remember my initiation fee, it was $200, and dues $40/month thereafter, and at the time, believe it or not, those fees were well worth it. The gym has three floors, and at the time it had state of the art cardio equipment on the second floor as well as a decent weight room area, excellent locker rooms and a very nice pool on the first floor, and a wonderful abdominal station and basketball court on the third floor.
Although, my plan had full access to any of the L.A. Fitness Sportsclubs, I remained loyal to this particular location due to the fact that distance wise, it was closest form my place. Five years ago, this gym had top notch equipment. Machines were well maintained, free weight area was properly racked, bathrooms were clean, lockers were in perfect working order, they even provided hair dryers, ect. Their staff was also very professional, back then, back then.
Present day, you all are paying top dollar for equipment that is at least seven years old. Not a week goes by that treadmills or other cardio machines break down, and are not attended to within reasonable time. In fact, I was working out last Sunday (just a day ago), and five of their twenty treadmills were broken or out of order. That is 25% of their treadmills. There is no excuse for this. The bathrooms are disgusting, and so are the locker rooms, racking weights is not an enforced policy, people leave their sweat all over the machines. Some may state that this is as a result of ill mannered members, and while this may be true, it is up to this gym's staff to enforce their rules. Another thing that really bothers me, is that the staff here is always trying to sell you some sort of upgrade to your existing plan. They are always hounding you for more money, yet this gym seems to be significantly decaying.
Any of you that are looking into joining this gym, first do not allow any of the sales people to push you into joining. Look around, there are plenty of options out there. If anything, in this type of economy, you guys can get your pick of the litter. Now, I am not going to tell you that an alternative gym is the holy grail when compared to this place or what not, but I will give you the reader this much of advice: Don't buy into this crap on your first visit that L. A. Fitness has a special going on and blah, blah, blah. Look around, do some shopping, make sure that you are happy with the services that you are paying for. Second, shop around and compare the amenities of this gym with other similar franchises and see what those offer, in terms of location, prices, classes, ect. In my opinion, while this was a great gym at one time, a very long time, it is just not worth the monthly price anymore. There are a lot better alternatives out there than this place. -
Review from David C.

As far as gyms go, it has a lot of things to offer. The amount of equipment, variety of, and size all make it a pretty comfortable gym. They have different classes which I know include spinning and yoga. I don't participate in the classes so I'm not sure of what else they offer. Indoor basketball court is nice along with an Olympic sized swimming pool. There are also some punching bags. Many treadmills, bikes, and elliptical machines. The only thing I can say is missing is a racquetball court.
I think monthly dues are a bit steep at 37.44 per month but you have gyms nationwide so if you travel and want to train you have gyms readily available.
Gripes with this gym specifically is the fact that members in the free weight area do not rerack weigh, so you have to go on a mission to look for weights. Other than that 5 pm and later is very packed, but that's all gyms I believe. As for me this is the closest most convenient gym so I'll stick here for now. -
Review from Ravi B.
How about a steroid that makes you re-rack your weights? As well as making you a soprano, of course.
While this LA Fitness - my favorite one - is hardly the only or worst offender, there was a time when employees (and trainers) here really enforced the re-racking policy (in the South location, there used to be a guy whose workout actually consisted of re-racking!).
Other than that, it is a nicely designed gym, despite its unwieldy, tri-level design. The equipment is in good shape and it is kept pretty clean. The bathroom and shower area is kept well and the cleaning crew is ever present. The gym seems to have a steady flow of traffic peaking at around 5-6pm.
The spinning classes are very popular and, if you're female, you have likely had more than a few encounters with a trainer trying to sell you a training package (or trying to pick you up - why waste the opportunity, right?).
Parking is validated for up to two hours, I believe.Listed in: LAF in MIA

Review from Len D.
I went here on a 3 day pass, but I snuck in here for close to 2 months in 2007 (give me a break..I just moved to FL and I didn't really have any money yet). I have been there late in 2008 as a guest and it hasn't really changed. I went during the afternoon and at night. The place was always pretty busy. I usually had to wait for the cardio machine I wanted.
It is true that the free weights are always a mess and there is always a couple of sets missing. It was like that in 2007 and that didn't change in 2008 when I came in there again. It was clean and has everything you would need possible. The only thing it was missing is some of the hardcore stuff that is generally not in most gyms anyway, so I won't take away from that, such as kettlebells.
It has a sauna (I think a steam shower too, but I forget), so that's always a plus. One of the major things I would join here is for the pool. It is one of the few gyms in Miami Dade area that has one.
My sister was a member here and actually pretty much had this membership for show. She kept the membership because she went to Sunset Mall a lot. I think they let you have like 2 hours free parking. So she would go and get her ticket validated.
Overall, its a good gym compared to most in this area. I would have become I member here, but at the time I wanted a gym with both kickboxing/mma and a fully stocked gym. They had some kickboxing class, but its like a cardio kickboxing (think tae bo) and that's not my kinda thing. It is pretty affordable. You can talk to one of those guys to get them to pay under $39 a month (don't let them tell you any different). If you live close to it then I would see no reason not to be a member. -

Cons: free weights are a mess, trainers stand around and talk instead of reracking inconsiderate member's free weights, there is often no purex to clean ur hands or the machines off, the staff is indifferent/rude, the 4 tv's are usually set to crappy channels, there is only one balance ball, the staff eats their smelly food and shoot the breeze in tables situated directly infront of the cardio machines.
Pros: it's cheap, free parking
apparantly what keeps this place going are the classes in the AM. They seem to be popular, I only do cardio and freeweights. -

DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM!
I have never been more dissatisfied in my life, here's why:
1) From day one I was lied to about the price and had to pay about $10 more p/month than I was originally told.
2) Speaking of price, they are all a bunch of scammers! Came down for the summer and a friend of mine in the same situation ended up paying $20 more than I do. I wish someone had told him this: "Don't believe anything they tell you. They're full of s***!"
3) This place is a mess! Management does not make sure the place is kept in clean nororganized and vital machines have been out of order for 2 months now. What do I pay a monthly bill for?
4) If you are a woman, DO NOT get a trainer. That is unless you enjoy being molested and GROPED during your work out.
5) I hope you enjoy being CONSTANTLY harassed by employees looking to fill their daily quota for making annoying phone calls. As soon as you walk in be prepared to be bombarded by unproffesional employees asking you "Hey do you have friends? Do they work out? Give me the phone numbers of 5 people you know. Come on... You do have friends don't you??"
6) Speaking of filling quota: The on-site trainers will not stop trying to get you to take a free-trial session with them. Don't tell them you'll think about it 'cause they'll just ask you again tomorrow. One thing they're good at is remembering your face and asking you everyday.
7) Don't take nutrition and workout advice from a guy who's so juiced up that he tries selling his extra 'roids to you!
8) And lastly, when you finally try to cancel your membership be prepared for one more scam. Not only will they "forget" to mention to you that you must notify them 1 month and 20 days in advance (so they can suck one more bill payment out of you, don't forget that you already payed your final month when you signed up!) Not only that but they also conveniently forget to mention that you must mail the letter to the corporate offices by *CERTIFIED* mail. If you don't it will take a couple weeks till you get a "return to sender" and by then they have just sucked ANOTHER months payment out of you.
Do yourself a favor and use the gym at your school, or just join a local one. Save yourself from at least ONE of these problems that did not just happen to me. At least half of these issues have also come up with friends of mine. -
Review from Christie A.
Miami, FL
I have been a member of this gym since it opened and loved it for the first few years, but lately, I don't know what the HEC is happening! The quality and condition of the gym has seriously gone down hill.
I was recently looking for 10lb weights to do a burn out set...and to my surprise, there were no 10lb dumbbells to be found anywhere! I went to the front desk to ask, and to my surprise--they had the 10lb dumbbells there! WTF?! They told me that they had to keep the weights up there bc people had been putting the weights in their bags and stealing them. Seriously-WHO DOES THAT?!? Who steals weights from a gym?!! Unbelievable! Just goes to show the quality of people that have been in this gym lately =(
The fact that the place is always a mess is really disturbing me- the weights are NEVER on the racks where they are supposed to be. Back in the day, they had a person who was paid to re-rack the weights and it was great. I guess no such person exists anymore. Also, the carpeting was beginning to wear in some areas, which is understandable, but the way that they fixed the wear and tear is nasty. They ended up putting some patches of carpet that don't even resemble the already existing carpet on top of the holes. Really, it looks like Bojangles outfit or something. Ridiculous. The A/C is constantly breaking down at this gym too, I know the point of working out is to work up a sweat, but the broken AC just takes it to a whole other level that I am not comfortable with. The stagnant air realllly bothers me. Oh! And a lot f the machines are broken or missing parts! Again, wtf is going on here?!
The classes are also not good here at all. Spinning is decent here at best. And the aerobic classes?! Forget it, a complete joke. I used to go to the gym at night and used to go upstairs to do abs while hip hop dance classes were going on, and really, I got more of an ab workout from laughing at the ridiculous moves that were going on in there. True story.
So, all this being said, will I be canceling my membership anytime soon? No. The only reason for that is that every other gym in the area is way to expensive for my budget =/ The only solution to my woes is that my husband and I now go to the gym at 5:30AM and that KIND OF makes it more bearable least in the morning the crowd is smaller and less beef cakey and you can get to the good machines with ease. In the morning the gym is filled with people who really care about fitness, in the evenings this gym is filled with 15% people that care about fitness and 80% people who care ab getting laid. Oy vey! -

I just looked for my review and it was gone???? So...
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------
I read the reviews before joining....weighed the pros & cons....
Hey, I just need a place to exercise and have equipment that works and some A/C. The rates are affordable AND they offer child care (the Kids' Club)...the manager is super sweet, the trainers are very nice and knowledgeable, the Kids Club sitters Linda and Maggie are great! I don't need anything else from a gym. I like that everyone works out very seriously. There isn't a bunch of socializing and "picking up". We are all there to be healthy and if anyone else is there to "hook up" good for them...can't think of a better place to "hook up" than a gym. I know when I met my husband, I wanted a man that was into working out like I am..soooooo...... I'm proud of working out at L.A. Fitness and hope that the reputation will get better. I lost 110 lbs. and I didn't do it by complaining about the gym, the equipment or the staff........."where there's will, there's a way"........get in shape no matter what!!!!
Oh and I see people cleaning all the time...and I'm there EVERY day! Ok, the re-stacking the weights IS a problem, but get over it....the place is great ................so far..........................PS: I'm the University of Miami's Herbert Wellness Center success story..see me on youtube "Adrianne's Story" -

Girls beware... this is what I call a meat market! From what I have experienced from this place guys go here to (try) to look good and pick up girls and most girls go dressed up as if they are going to the prom. I mean come on people! Take of your makeup and let the sweat (if any) roll down your face free of that stuff we call makeup. It really makes me sick.Give it a break, at least when going to the gym. Oh yea, and one more thing I dislike very much about this place is how the personal trainers are always on your case so that they can train you... whatever that's supposed to mean. I can be a personal trainer as well, from what I have seen them showing the clients that they convince! :) Oh well...

The upstairs smells
There are never enough machines
The "trainers" are a joke
The place is a scam when it comes to cancellation
I finally gave up, went from the $50/month or so I was paying to $120/month at Equinox and have never been happier in a gym -
Review from Robert C.
Miami, FL
I began training here back in 2005, and recently switched over to a new facility that is not related to L.A. Fitness.
L. A. Fitness in Sunset Place is composed of three levels. The bottom level is reserved for a few cardio machines, the pools, and the locker rooms and showers. The middle level is the largest floor and it contains the majority of the cardio machines, the weight room, and the spinning room, as well as a nursery for children. Finally the the top level contains an abdominal station, the basketball court, and the aerobics room.
When I first started L.A. Fitness back in '05, it was well worth the money, in fact, I will go on to say that it was a bargain ($200 registration fee and all). I was paying $37.99 (tax included) a month, and was able to experience this amazing gym, that was very well kept at the time, kept me in the best shape of my life, hassle free, good crowd (people who were there to keep fit, none of these 35 yr olds going on 19 type idiots), everything about this place was great.
What I have noticed throughout the years is a decline in their maintenance, and an influx of the Miami Club scene Crowd, which is a cancer to any gym. Weights are now scattered all over the weight room, the staff does not bother to enforce the gym rules (specifically the one regarding racking your dumb bells once you are done with them), and as a result, you may find yourself stuck in the gym longer as you try to find a a set of dumb bells.
I ve also noticed that in the last year or so, a lot of their cardio equipment, in particular their treadmills have broken down, or were in dire need of repair, and it was customary for their staff to just slap on an "Out of order" sign on it, and have the machine sit around like that for weeks, weeks.
In short, this gym was a great gym, but that is no longer the case. Though I understand that we are going through an economic recession, L.A. Fitness' prices have not changed since I first joined 5 years ago. I would of expected the same quality of care for their equipment they had back then, but it seems to me that the quality of this particular gym is gradually declining.
One thing that L.A. Fitness continues to do, is give you a 2 hr validation on your parking, that is you will not pay for parking at Sunset Place if you have validated your parking ticket with L.A. Fitness and have been at Sunset Place for 2 hours or less.
Make sure you visit other gyms around the area before you make the decision on joining L.A. Fitness. -

I don't even want to give this place a star. It is absolutely horrendous. I can handle a sweaty gym but this place is a mess all the time. If you want to use free weights be prepares to clean up after lazy men who pile on the 45s that they can barely lift then leave them there. Machines ate broken and many are rusting. The carpet hasn't been changed since it opened. I think they are intentionally letting it fall into disrepair. Maybe it's slated to be closed. Sure seems like it because nobody has actually manged the place in 3 years. What a shame. Great location.

LA Fitness is a decent gym if you make sure you get the most out of this Sunset Place location, it's nearly brand new and occupies a large space on the 1st/2nd floor near Niketown. Inside, you'll find plentiful treadmills, ellipticals, and other fitness machines in a well-lit, comfortable environment. Don't worry if you feel body conscious, this gym has a nice cross-section of people: old folks, teens, young professionals, etc.
The gym is divided into 3 floors:
The ground floor is dedicated to a lap pool, jacuzzi, and locker rooms equipped with showers. The 2nd floor (main entrance) has the treadmills, ellipticals, bicycles, stair climbers, etc. along with the various weight machines and dumbbell sets that I avoid (the guys tend to congregate around there), I'm a cardio exerciser so I leave that to them. The 3rd floor holds an exercise studio where classes are held and a basketball court. I really enjoy the variety of work-out classes LA Fitness holds, there's....yoga...cardio kickboxing...cycling...step aerobics... pilates...and my personal fav...hip hop class! I'm sure there's more but I can't remember them all.
Nice amenities include the wall-mounted hand-gel sanitizers, the snack/juice bar on site, kiddie daycare on site, validated parking, blow dryers in the women's locker room, and free lockers. Basic membership is around $35/mo., no yearly contract, just a hefty deposit.
Word of advice: avoid hiring a personal trainer here, my friend signed up for a set amount of sessions and she kept getting switched to various, shady trainers, not sure how qualified they are here. Otherwise, this place easily gives you your money's worth if you work out alot. -

Two words: Meat Market. Girls go there in groups constantly fixing their hair, wearing cutesy outfits, standing around just to look pretty, hardly breaking a sweat. Guys go there to show off and stare at the women. OK not EVERYBODY is like that. Some people go to actually work out. If you're even slightly out of shape, beware of the personal training staff, they are a pain. I was harassed a lot by someone trying to sell me personal training sessions and often felt like they were talking down to me. I gave it two starts instead of one because some of the classes are good, especially the Body Works classes Tuesdays and Thursday nights, assuming the same woman teaches them. I haven't been there in a few months so the instructor may have changed. Of course the guys playing basketball next door love to stare at the women during the classes. As for spinning, the bikes could use better maintenance, as there are often bikes broken. The parking can also be a pain, especially during busy times. I left and joined 24 Hour Fitness, a world of difference!

Its a pretty nice gym for sure. Was only a member here for 4 months because of a dynamic living situation, but I enjoyed what little time I had working out here. I'm one of those people that likes going early in the morning and does not like having to go to far from home to go to the gym. Since I lived very close to Sunset Place, I made it here every morning at the ass crack of dawn. It was not too busy, and I hardly ever had to wait to use any of the equipment. Most of the machines are new, but not the latest or best. This did not bug me too much. However, I was a little disappointed that they did not do anything to help me with the club's initiation fee. They did bring my monthly charge down to a reasonable price, but I had to cough up $175 just to join initially. Overall, this LA Fitness was okay. In my mind, it you are asking for Equinox like prices, you have to follow through with Equinox quality.
