Get:
~Hot chocolate (5 stars): some of the best I've had, rivaling even La Maison. Just the right thickness, and you can taste the quality of the chocolate that they use. Plus, they have a variety of blends and single source darks. $5
~Dark chocolate frappes (5 stars): probably the best one I've had. This is definitely on the pricier side, but it comes in such a huge size that I had to stick it in the freezer for tomorrow. The texture is everything I'd imagined something like this ought to be: thick but drinkable with a straw. And it kept its consistency even after walking around with it at the farmer's market for 30 minutes. Not too sweet, and again, you can taste the quality of the chocolate. $7.50
Lots of moms and dates, but a cute little shop. I know it's close to City Bakery, but this hot chocolate is just so much better. -

Such a cute cafe place. Nestled near Fifth Ave and just around the bend from Michael Kors and Kate Spade. How classy. How fancy. How slightly pretentious.
Anyhow, you don't really come here for desserts, more for just the cafe part.
Best white chocolate of my life. Seriously. of. my. life.
There's not a lot of space here, and the waiter staff is kind of giggly and campy, but other than that, it's a solid romantic dig. -

My favorite little chocolate place in all of NYC! I bought a nice box of homemade chocolates home for my family on valentines day.

Good chocolate and pastries! Minus one star because the staff was not attentive or helpful even after I said hello and greeted them.

I don't think I have ever stepped into a place where I could get more than one type of hot chocolate.
Meet L.A. Burdick. My new (fancy and expensive) BFF.
I ordered a small white hot chocolate with almond milk (almond milk was suggested by hot-drink-maker over soy milk). Total: $5.00. Cha-ching. What?! This better be worth it.
After my friend paid, I spotted the darling little white chocolate samples to the side of the counter. Took two- one for me and one for my friend. I'll be honest and admit that I wanted to go back for seconds but I didn't. I must have been having my nice day.
We sat down and waited for our hot drinks. He ordered some mocha drink (obviously I am not a coffee drink connoisseur). The staff member placed them in front of us, I took one sip, and was in winter wonderland bliss.
One of the annoying things about this place is probably the people. Think fancy schmancy people. Not young. Older. Meh.
Another annoying thing about this place (as well as a pet peeve) is that the cash register lady did not know much about the hot chocolates. Not entirely her fault. I place blame on management. I remember when I worked in the food industry, management would give us tests on the menu, as well as samples of popular/not-so-popular food items. I guess I expect staff members to know about what they are selling. I mean, they *should* know. Example?
Me: What's the difference between Hot Chocolate A and Hot Chocolate B?
Cash Register Lady (CRL): I don't know. I haven't tried the hot chocolates.
Me: Umm. Ok.
CRL: Ok, well. I am a fan of white hot chocolate.
Meh. Not the answer I was looking for. -

This is a super cute little cafe and dessert place. Ive been here several times for coffee and cappuccino which is great and deserves four stars. They have both soy and almond milk for us lactose intolerant folks.
What keeps me from a higher rating is the super disappointing desserts! I've eyed them many times in the display case. They look gorgeous and so yummy. However, I recently had after dinner dessert. Disappointing! Cake was dry! And nothing to write home about. Unfortunately they may not have enough turnover which is contributing to the not worth the calories dessert. -

That mouse is tiny and cute! I thought it was just ok...nice how it came with a tail, but for $3??
I had the small white hot chocolate, but could only drink half of it until I grew sick of it. Maybe it was too thick, too..milky?
The place is cute, but I didn't think the sweets were that amazing. -

I was really glad to hear that LA Burdick came to town from Cambridge/New England Area. This was my favorite place for a cup of cocoa in grad school and now I can have it here too!
I agree with other reviewers that the chocolates are just okay, but the hot cocoa is simply delightful. Although one must be warned to order a small and sip slow...this is some very chocolaty hot cocoa!!! -

This is the New York transplant of Harvard Square's beloved LA Burdick. In some ways, I think the interior here is better laid out that Harvard's: the space is rather squarish, with the chocolate shop in one corner, the cafe in another, and the rest for seating.
As always, the regular hot milk chocolate is the way to go. Also some lovely cakes: the Harvard Square, the linzer torte, and anything with chocolate have been delicious.
I do like their hot chocolate more than City Bakery's, but wish they closed a bit later (they close at 9!). -

Love passing by here on my walk home from work and can't believe I hadn't found it until recently. Really cute little place to either pick-up or hang out. I've tried several pastries and all have been really good. A lot of interesting variety. Nice staff and great hot chocolate selection.

I love LA Burdick chocolates and presentation boxes but this particular store severly falls short. There are very limited options for custom boxes of chocolates, and they don't even have the nice wooden boxes to put the selections in.
Pretty much everything here is already pre-packaged... who wants to give a gift like that? Why would they hinder themselves by not offering the same beautiful packaging and the wide variety of chocolates? This makes LA seem like any old macy's selling pre-packaged, shrink-wrapped godiva/lindt when it's not! Terrible judgment.
With the number of upscale chocolate places in NYC, it doesn't do LA any favors to not offer custom boxes. Their presentation is truly one of a kind when done right. Next time I have chocolates to buy, I will find another place in New York to purchase them from. So sad. -
Review from James K.
A friend told me that this place has her favorite hot chocolate, so we went there after our lunch. The hot chocolate was gooey and thick, as if they melted chocolate and served that. You could pick between white chocolate, milk, and dark. I chose dark because well, that's what I like. It was intense and delicious. Though I personally do prefer for my hot chocolates to be a little more milked down.

Awesome find for chocolate - get the hot chocolate, one of their many pastries or the chocloates. Either ways, you'll love them all!!

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I am basing this entire review on one chocolate bar. Why? There has to be a standard by which you compare similar items. I judge a gelato place by how they make their pistachio. I judge a makeup brand on the consistency and color of their basic red lipstick. For chocolate, I'll try your flavors if I know you have a good base of around 70% cocoa dark chocolate.
Full disclosure, I found this place looking for Chocolate Moderne but I decided to give it a chance, no prejudice based on what I had been hoping to get instead. The 69%-72% dark chocolate bar is fine. Not great, not terrible. Fine. If I wanted slightly expensive baking chocolate I might come here but I'm not sold on their chocolate. The consistency is pretty silky and smooth. The taste is just not there. I'm used to very dark chocolates being a little bitter and dry but not weirdly sour.
I may come back when it gets colder to try their hot chocolate but right now I'm not sold on this place. -

I have been a fan of LA Burdick's since I went to school in Cambridge, MA.
I know that people complain about the prices, but for me, it is all right to occasionally pay a higher price for a gourmet snack or pastry.
Typically the snacks run $3.50-4.00 for a piece of tart or a streusel, but the smaller portions start at $1.25. And, in the winter time, nothing beats a hot chocolate from this place. -

Nice little coffee/sweets shop. Came here with a friend and their espresso beverages were quite good (and cheap!). I would recommend the Americano. Their sweets seemed a bit pricey but maybe they are worth it.

Stopped here on my way home from Craftbar. Despite being ridiculously stuffed, the smell enchanted me into ordering a demi dark hot chocolate. Thank god it was espresso sized because it was so rich and chocolatey that even this shot-sized serving was decadent and sinful enough to satisfy my chocolate cravings that usually follow a savory meal. Not bad for $2.50.
YUM!
Oh. Don't expect a discount on out of season chocolates. I asked whether there would ever be a discount on the Easter candy and the answer was "Probably not."

This place is really cute, and the staff were really nice, but:
a) the cake I tried (hazelnut orange) was crumbly and dry, and
b) the hot dark cocoa was too sweet--it was good for a few sips but by the time I finished half a cup, I found it to be cloying.
I hate being so negative about a place that seems like it's run by nice people, but, what can you do. -

APPLE TORTE THING.
and HOT CHOCOLATE.
(City Bakery is just down the street BUT LA Burdick has quality hot chocolate)
My mom came to visit and the most American thing she likes to eat is apple pie (and its similar alternatives). Of the 5.5 days she was here, the apple torte thing was THE item she truly enjoyed.
I have to agree that it was very very good and fresh and flaky.

Went to this place, while walking around 5th ave last night. The place has great ambience..the lady @ the counter patiently gave me options to try out. I read about the hot chocolate (from my fellow yelpers!!!) before i walked in. so tried the house hot chocolate. Must say, it was really good...I not a fan of hot chocolate generally, but loved this. it was dark, but very light on the tummy. The cup/saucer combo was amazing. typical english style of drinking tea/coffee.
Good for a visit if you are in the mood to relax and drink some coffee/tea. I dont believe this place has WiFi (which is great, so you can avoid those day-long coffee drinkers/table hoggers). -

The small fragment of childhood left in me still has a strong penchant for hot chocolate. Not just chocolate but a warm, milky cocoa beverage. There's something deeply psychological about it. Maybe the endorphins the chocolate releases or maybe memories tied to it or just the sweet comfort you feel.
My golden standard has been the hot chocolate at XOCO in Chicago which is roasted and ground fresh daily and I never thought I'd find a match here in New York. Who can go cocoa bean to cocoa bean with Rick Bayless?
I had the hot chocolate here once and every day since I have to fight my urges tooth and nail to not get another one after my workout a few blocks away. It's silky, not too sweet, full of rich, pure cocoa flavor and you'll treasure each sip. But don't overdo it. The thought of it is just as important as the indulgence. -

Adorable chocolate mice.
I tried a sampler box and was quite happy with the selection. Not the best I've ever had, but very, very good.
The store is cute. I would love to come back and grab a cup of coffee and enjoy some reading here. -

I fell in love with LA Burdick at their Cambridge location, and the New York one is even better (in terms of seating and such). The milk hot chocolate is heavenly. The texture and taste are perfect, and unlike other yelpers, I get a large every time. It's like a meal in itself because it's so rich, but entirely worth it.
If you have time, it's worth staying in - the atmosphere is lovely. On a semi-TMI note, if you're in need of a restroom, theirs is always clean.Listed in: New York Favorites, Favorite Cafes

come with me and you'll be in a world of pure imagination....
Warm and inviting, small and charming. My mind went to A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare ( I played Helena in 5th grade- so this is not so random) as soon as I walked in here. There are branches with twinkling lights(I'm a sucker for those white christmas ones) which cast a warm glow over the place. It was like the enchanted forest in which the aforementioned play takes place.
I came here on a first date a while back. I should preface by saying I love hot chocolate and dude picked the ultimate spot. On a Sunday at around 3:45 it was packed! There are a limited number of tables. What suprises me is how loud it can get it here! We were here for about 2 hours and I never felt rushed or like we had to leave at all.
I stuck to a standard small milk chocolate hot cocoa. You go up and order at the counter and they bring it to your table. mmmmmmm. i could have gone for the large. Quite honestly I could have consumed 3 larges. BEST hot chocolate in the city. It is rich but not overbearing. The consistency is just the right amount of thickness- you could still drink it through a straw. I rarely sip slow but I savored every sip. As you bring it towards your nose the sweet smell hits you too. I have had City Bakery and all the rest. To me those taste like greasy sludge in a cup and nauseate me before I even finish. I was tempted to get one of their alcoholic hot chocolates- they are on the pricey side.
I can't believe I haven't made it back here yet! The desserts look incredible. I was serioulsly eyeing the linzer tart esque sweet treat that the girls next to us were eating. I'm a sucker for all things linzer. Everything looks worth the calories. They have a bunch of chocolate bars as well.
Simply Fantastical. -

I think have just ended my search for the best HOT CHOCOLATE in the city! I know it's a bold statement but I can still remember the first sip of the dark hot chocolate I shared with one of my oldest and dearest friends here....the good company could have had something to do with it, but I think I always seem to have good company around whenever I have chocolate though...so it must have been this amazing hot drink that stole the spotlight among all the ones I've had. Yes, I do like this one better than Mr. Torres'...I'm sorry if I offended anyone by making this statement. @_@
Why?
First of all, the rich dark chocolate aroma was amazing on a cold winter's day when you walk into the store. Then you take a sip from this precious mug and it's not overwhelming like those other ones where you get a little nauseous after downing 1/2 the mug....you actually want to keep sipping....sipping it is the key though! Don't go crazy with the gulping, you might hurt yourself if you are not careful!
This place was also adorable :0, which adds to the gawking factor.... The warm straw yellowish walls with cutsy sconces lining them were simply precious! I loved the hanging branches from the ceiling that created a nest-like mobile with sparkly decorations dangling above my head.
Ok so I guess time flies when you are having a good time, I was reaching the bottom of the cup as quickly as I decided to order...hmmmm but It was enough, I was satisfied and ready for my next adventure!
Mmmm..tres bien mon chocolat chaud!Listed in: 5*s

Review from Mary P.
This location is beautiful with it's uncomfortable wood benches and old European woodsy feel with old metal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling BUT they're severely lacking in what the "legendary" (per Harvardians) Harvard location offers.
I love the Luxembourgers and this locations isn't going to even try serving them. No matter there are plenty of places to get them (French macarons).Still they make the perfect sized and priced macaron. Why not sell them!?!
I also love the canneles, a small little souffle-looking muffin like structure with hints of lavender BUT some crazy lady bought them out of them today (they only had like 20?). The Madeline is a good replacement however. Yum!
Lastly the hot chocolate. It tastes more liquid than the solid flavor and pure chocolately-ness of Mr Chocolate or La Maison. I actually enjoy that thickness like I enjoy thick milkshakes. To each their own because the hot chocolate here does taste much much better than average and is offered in several different variations of milk and cocoa bean source. -

What is the best way to end a great lunch date on a cold NYC winter day?
Hot chocholate at LA Burdick! Incredibly cute date spot!
Love my chocolate dark and so many places ignore the need for dark hot chocolate. Yummm! Conveniently in various sizes, in case your sweet tooth is not as prominent as mine. Plus the staff was so knowledgable and helpful. Ask them about the chocolate mouse story.
Only con to the experience was the 2 suits in the corner table holding a business meeting. I mean, Come on! Check out the atmosphere before you do that! -

Review for dark hot chocolate:
Absolutely amazing. The space is cozy, more of a chocolate shop, and there is usually a place to sit. They bring your order to your table, and lets just say, you can stop searching for that great hot chocolate! Small. Simple. And well done. Very rich and very creamy. Nothing glitzy, just good. They also serve some tasty pastries. -
Review from Alison C.
After taking some clients out to lunch, my colleagues and I needed to down a quick cup of coffee before heading back to the office. We asked our guests for a recommendation in the area, and they referred us to L.A. Burdick. None of us had ever heard of the chocolate cafe and were eager to try it. The adorable shop was so quaint and elegant that it reminded me of something out of a Dickens' novel. The friendly service only enhanced the delightful experience.
I satisfied my caffeine craving with a Double Espresso, which was served in a medium-sized cup and much larger than I had expected. The glass was filled to the brim, but I found the warm beverage a bit watery and less bold than I would have liked.
Their pastry display case was stocked with refined, yet decadent treats that tantalized the stomach. However, the main draw was the shop's elaborate truffles. The sweet Fig bonbon was covered in dark chocolate and contained a syrupy center of ripe figs and port wine. It was a tasty and seasonal treat. The Poire Baton was also covered in dark chocolate, but was filled with a whipped dark chocolate ganache and Poire Williams, a pear after-dinner liquor. The ganache melted in my mouth, but the pear flavor was only slightly perceptible, which I should have anticipated from the minuscule dried pear garnish on the top of the truffle.
Though my espresso was not as strong as my coffee-snob self usually prefers, my chocolate-snob self found the rich truffles utterly sinful. L.A. Burdick's desserts and customer service were as endearing as the shop itself, making it worthwhile destination. -

Excellent dark hot chocolate as well as dark chocolate bars. The birthday cake (I think that's the name) is a non flour cake surrounded by chocolate and candied orange or something like that. Definitely a few more dollars than the grocery store stuff but well worth it.

A vendor I recently hired for a job sent small boxes of these as thank you gifts to my team. The presentation was impressive. Each box was made of wood, tied with ribbon, and stamped with a gold B. He had written cards for each of us, and the boxes were packaged with the corresponding cards.
The chocolates themselves are very very good - not too big, just the right size and very rich.
I hadn't heard of this place until now, but I will definitely be sending my own thank you gifts from here! -

I've been to Jacques Torres. I've been to City Bakery. I've been to various little chocolate shops for their hot chocolate. I DON'T care what people say anymore. LA Burdick has the best dark hot chocolate in Manhattan. I said it. I meant it. It is the perfect texture. So smooth, so rich, so delightful. Seriously. Why would you go anywhere else?
Get a small. I could barely finish it before I got a sugar induced headache. That said, the dark isn't really sweet, which is why it's perfect. It's what dark chocolate should taste like: rich, indulgent, and almost savory.
If you're on your way to City Bakery for hot chocolate, keep walking north. This place wins on all accounts. -
Review from Jinhwa J.
Manhattan, NY
It was fall, year of 2009.
I was driving up north to get to Dartmouth. The very first Asian/Korean president at Ivy Leagues, Dr. Jim Yong Kim's inaugural ceremony was next day. I had so much respect for Dr. Kim for his public health works and I blindly was in love with his being super smart. I was e.x.c.i.t.e.d. It was one of my best work-related trips.
But, Dr. Kim was not the only one who made me excited. L.A. Burdick was another. On the way to Dartmouth, I had to stop there. They used to have a restaurant near Boston, but it was gone years ago. Now only a chocolate shop is around. So this one and only restaurant in Walpole, New Hampshire was not to be missed. (Ken Burns, a film maker used to co-own this post. So if you like him, one more reason to stop by) I was determined.
I sped a little to get there by lunch time. My faithful GPS had no problem with that. Smooth ride till I exited where I was supposed to. Then non stop of "Recalculation, recalculation, recalculation..."
This place was nowhere to be seen. As I was so frustrated that I was about to give up, wisdom came to me. "Let's go to post office, they will know." As I parked there, there it was, very low-profiled L.A. Burdick right next to it.
After my fresh mussels and superb arugula salads, I could not get over one thought. "What did Walpole farmers do to have this restaurant around?" The vibe is so welcome and friendly, and food is over the top. But not like New York, everything in Walpole is solidly grounded. No hype. Plus, they were happy to give me the recipe of crisp parmesan cheese sticks! No secretive strategy, this sharing mode only showed their confidence.
Next to the restaurant, there's the famous chocolate shop. They hand-make everything there. Coco beans are from Madagascar, Dominica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Grenada, Bolivia. They are serious about beans. Actually, Mr. Burdick has worked at a chocolate shop in Switzerland. L.A. Burdick's famous cute mice chocolate bonbons were created in Swiss, in fact. Whenever he took leftover chocolates from work, he would re-create those into mice for his children. How sweet.
Also, they offer chocolate culinary program; so if you want to decompress in a rural setting with world class chocolates, there you go.
Bunch of chocolates in my arm, I was about to leave Walpole, with sadness. Then a flyer got my attention. What? They were about to open in New York? My husband and I impatiently waited for their opening. When they finally opened, oh boy, were we happy!
New York chocolate shop near Union Square has its original post's vibe. Warm, woody, country-side coziness. You can sit down for thick hot coco, or fairly good espresso, and some pastry goodies.
Since NYC is under snow storm now, hot chocolate is a must. They offer Dark, Milk, and White chocolate. If you want to be luxurious, you can also choose single source cocoas for your cup from 6 different countries.
Dark cocoa is the signature, but it doesn't have kids' side of it. Too serious coco taste for me. So I ordered a small milk cocoa ($3.75) which is still rich enough. If you want to sample all 3 kinds, you can order 'demi' size, which is as big as an espresso cup for $2.5.
By my tongue was about to paralyze from good sweetness, it's time to relax it with sour touch of 'rustic apple tart' ($3.50). A whole apple sliced on the top of buttery pastry will do its job.
You can have a decent cup of coffee as well. You can tell it's good by how they foam milk. Latte is too milky, but Cappuccino is just fine for me. And drinking coffee might need sweet fix. Chocolate mousse cake ($3.5) is worth to try.
Dense, mouth melting texture of chocolate (almost truffle) will make you mellow.
When they opened in NYC, they said there would be a restaurant soon, too. Hospitality of Walpole maybe impossible to be copied in NY, but that's OK. We will manage that as long as we can sneak in the highness of taste. -
Review from Denise R.
Came here for dessert, this is a sweet lil spot. The cafe itself has a very comfy feel, but finding a table can be tough as there's very limited room.
I ordered the bday cake, which is part chocolate mousse, it was very rich. The Bday cake slice(at $4 a slice) may seem small at first glance but the rich flavors can be overwhelming, so the small slice is plenty to satisfy a chocolate craving. I also had the hot chocolate made with milk chocolate, it was too sweer for my taste. I purchased a box of chocolates to enjoy at home, the chocolate mice are really cute and a yummy treat. -
Review from Lee M.
The hot chocolate is as good as I've tasted, particularly in an area where there are excellent hc options (city bakery, eataly, and the van leeuwen truck, which is always in the area). The dark hc is really amazing - rich and not as sweet as you'd think. I've had the milk hc also, which is excellent too, but packs a lot more sweetness The hc is made to order from chocolate, which is melted directly into the milk by way of the steamer of an espresso machine. They use Ronnybrook Farms milk, which goes to the quality of the final product.
They also have single source hot chocolates, if you're really a connoisseur. (I haven't tried them yet). As for the coffee, I'd opt for someplace else. That's not to say that the coffee is bad - it's just not worth the price tag.
Because the ingredient quality is high, the hot chocolate does not come cheap. The small is north of $4 and the large is north of $5. -

Astoria, NY
Wow, what a disappointment. I pass this place so often and have read the reviews, but it was nothing what I expected.
I just popped in for a truffle or two. I opted for the ginger/coconut set(one little chocolate of each flavor in this set) & a earl grey set (two of these in a set). I tasted no difference between them. If anything, the ginger had the teensy tinyest hint of real ginger. The coconut one actually tasted more like mocha. Zero anything but plain ol' chocolate in the earl grey. Not a smidge of bergamot to be found. Still, they were tasty.
Total of 4 itty bitty chocolates for $3.
The girl behind the counter was nice, smiled and was patient while I chose. But.... and this is a pet peeve of mine....I handed her my money and she put my change down on the counter instead of handing it back to me. This is a rude practice. Don't do it. -
Review from Velina L.
Not too bad but overall, not my favorite chocolate place. The hot chocolate was good, not too sweet, and slightly thick. However, the dark chocolate they use is a little on the fruity side and I tend to prefer deep, dark, earthier chocolate.
The truffles are cute, with the mouse and penguin shapes, but they all tend to come in very different sizes. Sometimes if you order one, you will get two small truffles in different flavors, and I didn't necessarily want both flavors (for example, I'm not a huge fan of milk chocolate so I wasn't too happy about having to pay for a milk chocolate truffle in order to get the small dark chocolate one I wanted.
In general, the textures and quality aren't up to the standards I'm used to (but then again, I've been spoiled by eating all the amazing chocolates in France). I felt that the dark chocolate couverture didn't shine through enough, the ganache texture wasn't creamy enough, and overall the flavor of the chocolate itself didn't play a big enough role in the balance of flavors.
Again, not bad but compared to what I'm used to eating, not that amazing. -
Review from Rohit J.
Came here the day after the first big snow storm back on Dec. 27th and this place was great I absolutely loved it. The staff was so incredibly nice, helpful and knowledgeable which is hard to come by these days.
My friends and I came here before dinner just to check it out and we were so happy to see they had a size slightly smaller than small which was perfect for us. There were four of us and we tried like 5 or 6 flavors, some better than others depending on what kind of chocolate you preferred but all were excellent. We also tried some of their pastries and chocolates and they were amazing, nothing but quality in their products.
This place, I think can definitely give Le Maison Du Chocolat a run for their money. Their hot chocolate is made to order and taste wise I think they are pretty similar although I would have to try side by side to be sure. I did think however LA Burdick's hot chocolate is lighter, it doesn't sit heavily in your stomach after you drink it. I also have to say this place is so much more organized and the service is way better then Le Maison.
This place is definitely worth checking out!
