Review from Bruce C.
I end up in Woburn every couple years for business and I always find myself back at Kyotoya. The owners are Chinese, if that makes a difference to you. Most of the sushi/Japanese restaurants around Dallas are owned by Chinese as well.
So the ambiance is average+. It's good, it doesn't have any out-of-place pictures of James Dean or non-autographed photos of some no-name football player, so kudoes to you Kyotoya!
The food is good and plentiful. For $7.95, you get a Bento box lunch special where you can choose your appetizer, entree and side dish. I chose the california roll (3 pieces), the crab rangoons, and the pork katsu. It comes with miso soup and a salad. All of it was above average and it's a great deal for all that.
They used to have a sushi lunch that included 3 rolls for $10.95. Not sure where that went. They must have been losing money on it and got rid of it.
All in all, this place is great. If I'm in Woburn again, just look for me at Kyotoya. I'll be there scarfing sushi. -

The sushi is always good here. I've been here mad times and know what rolls are the best. Real friendly too. BYOB! Great prices.

I end up getting their sushi special at least 2-3 times a week. They are very accommodating with making my maki with soybean paper as I am allergic to seaweed. The sushi is great. I have gotten other food there, but its a little too salty for my taste. I love that they deliver fast, and are reasonably priced.

This is a really great spot and their lunch specials and delicious. The price is very reasonable and the service is great. It's a small place in Montvale plaza and it can get busy at night.
The sushi is amazing, that's like all they have.
Their party platters are really good, my neighbors have gotten them before for parties and I am looking forward to ordering a few for my upcoming graduation party.Listed in: This is my town....!, here fishy-fishy

My husband and I moved to the Boston area a year ago. We assumed we'd find great sushi wherever we went. Boy, were we disappointed! It took us 6 months to find Kyotoya and we almost didn't go due to the location. Now, you can't keep us away!
Every once in awhile, Kyotoya has a not great day. Fortunately even their "not great" still equals awfully darn good. And then there are the days that are simply transcendent. My husband loves the hokigai (surf clam) nigiri. At least twice we've ordered it and it has been so fresh that the only way I can describe it is "it takes like the sea"... clean, sweet, oceanic. We usually stick to their more basic rolls since we're a bit of sushi purists (no cheese in sushi ever!). The salmon with avocado, the sake (salmon) nigiri, and the striped bass (I think they call it "white fish") nigiri, the unagi and avocado rolls are some of my favorites.
Combine all of this with friendly service and incredible ease of getting a table and I love this place! Oh and Kyotoya is BYOB; so feel free to bring along a nice bottle of sake, wine, or beers. -

I've been here twice. The sushi selection is pretty good. Some very unique creations using nearby street names and towns. Most of which are what I consider "Americanized" sushi, but that's what I like so it works out! My favorite is the montvale roll ($7.50) which is a huge roll containing shrimp tempura, cooked salmon, crab stick, avocado , and cream cheese. My only complaint is that big rolls like that should be only cut into 4 pieces. They cut it into 6 which makes each piece too thin and it falls apart if you aren't good at using chopsticks! Thank god I am...my bf...not so much. But that's a minor pet peeve. I also tried the red snow roll ($8.50) because people mentioned it on here. I didn't like it very much. It had spicy tuna on top? It was just too mushy for me. I need some texture!
Both times I went I was the only customer...so they were very attentative..maybe too much. But I can't blame them if I'm the only customer. The decor is simple... Nothing special. They have chopsticks stands! Which is a plus for me!
They also deliver which is awesome.. I'm just scared my sushi will come smushed in a container and sitting out for an hour.
Overall a good place, not the best place but definately worth coming back. -

So the food at my work's cafeteria is normally just so-so. Some days are better than others, but I'm not one to turn down the option to go out for Japanese. Kyotoya is a short drive down I-93 from work, so it's very convenient. I've been there at least 3 times, the latest being today.
The lunch box special for $6.95 is the way to go. You get to choose your appetizer, side dish, entree, and rice/noodle. It's a relatively limited selection, but most of it is very tasty so you can't really go wrong (though I wasn't a fan of the braised beef & onion). Today I had the spring roll, tasuta-age, tempura shrimp & veggies and the brown rice. Pretty solid meal - the tasuta-age being my favorite. It's ginger batter fried chicken. I'll admit, my tastes aren't all that refined and the ginger didn't really register with my taste buds, but it was DELICIOUS. The box came with a miso soup, but for some reason they gave us a salad as well (I think my co-worker meant to order one for himself but somehow we all got one).
Anyway, the sushi is decent too. Ordered the B-52 maki today - yellowtail tempura, crab stick, avocado and roe. The pieces were more like flattened circles than normal so it was a little awkward to eat but still good. I'm a big fan of yellowtail - crab's just okay, but I don't think I'd get that particular maki again. -

I am a true believer that word of mouth makes the best restaurants... My friends and I went to eat here and let me tell you... its fresh, not stale, ambience is lovely and we got GREAT customer service.
Even when they do not sell alcohol, you can BYOB.. Most excelente!
Heartsicles for Kyotoya!

I think this is a true hidden gem in Stoneham. Yes, the ambiance is a bit weak but the sushi is very fresh, there are a ton of options (they even have a small chinese menu as well), the service is fast and friendly and the prices are much more reasonable than anywhere in downtown Boston.
The only downside is no alcohol, but you can bring your own so carry in a bottle of wine (they'll open it for you and provide the glasses at no "uncorking fee").
Enjoy! -

Just a quick background, I'm visiting from California and sushi is my favorite food. I eat sushi about 3-4 times a week.
Pros.
This place was great. I got the number on yelp, called ahead and they made it in less than 10 min. The lady was super nice and friendly. It is surprisingly cheap(8.50 for a rainbow roll) and really good quality.
Cons
These cons are the reason I didn't give 5 stars. Despite being really good, the rolls are a bit on the small end. Unlike the nice lady, the sushi chef didn't look happy to be there and from the little Japanese I know, wasn't too thrilled I ordered a hand roll with no rice. They also don't have ponzu sauce, or even know what it is.
Overall, I would recommend this place to both travelers and locals. -

While the sushi here was not bad, it also was not stellar.
Cafe Sushi in Woburn center is pretty close, and much better.
I can't really put into words what was lacking here, but the taste of the sushi just was not up to par. The wasabi provided was very weak.
The decor here - however - is nicer than that of Cafe Sushi, but it doesn't make up for the difference in taste of the food.
Just like cafe sushi Kyotoya does not serve alcohol. -

Oh the joys of working in Woburn! Scrounging around for good places to go for lunch is a fun little game we play.
Here's a place that hit the radar and turned out to be a good pick. Getting decent sushi around this area isn't the easiest thing so this was a very pleasant discovery.
Everyone opted for the build your own lunch box option (only 6.95! FOR REAL). This is truly a good value. You get to pick out what you want and you get a perfectly respectable amount of food! Soup, salad, and then a bento box with your choices. Everything tasted great especially the dressing on the salad which was some kind of buttermilk thing.
Minor notes of annoyance: the California maki were pretty small as where the shu-mai and dumplings.
Overall: A good bet. It wasn't crowded for lunch (perhaps an undiscovered secret?) though it is small and the service was fine. Doesn't beat some of the places in Boston but when you only have an hour for lunch it works.
P.S. I still think that the Korean lunch box at New Jang Su BBQ in Burlington is much better/tastier even though it costs a bit more. -

Ambiance sucks, seating vaguely uncomfortable but the food is great.
My partner found this place when getting off 93 after missing her correct exit. We used to go here at least once a month when we were in the area.
She chatted up the owner, and if she was there when we would visit we'd get samples of possible new menu items. Some of which would end up on the menu and some would not.
The food was always amazing with some unusual items like the beef and cheese katsu. Sushi was always top notch and delicious. -

We've been going here roughly every week for the last couple of years with friends from Winchester, who discovered it. We're almost family here and have never had a bad experience. The dishes are always fresh and fun, and the staff attentive and helpful.
Remember to bring your own wine or beer -- the lack of a license is a benefit from the $ end!
If you want great fish, this place is a much better value than, say, the large seafood place in the Burlington Mall. -

These guys are cool.
Them fucking up the ingrediants once in awhile is my only issue.
First time I ordered the avo-tuna salad, they used spicy mayo. All the times since, they haven't. The Montvale Maki is supposed to have cooked salmon in the roll, but I've often recieved shrimp. No biggie, but they should pay more attention to detail when it concerns the menu.
Whenever I come in and order take-out they give me water and are very attentive. Extremely friendly, and I appreciate that. So many dickheads in the restaurant business that treat you like cattle...I assure you this is NOT the case here.
I love the Red Snow, the hand rolls, and Teka-Don. Good Lord. They deliver also which is the bees knees - generally some places won't travel 2 miles beyond their place of business due to laziness.
Alas they're closed on Sundays. Which is probably why Sato looks slammed. -

My wife and I are regulars here. The sushi is always fresh. The price is right. The staff is very accomodating. The lunch box is always a great deal. Best of all, there is never a wait. This place is a hidden gem.

I give this place a big thumbs up for what they have to offer. I've been to alot of good sushi places and this is one of them. I am quite particular of their "Montvale Ave" and "Red Snow" rolls. Especially the red snow, which is rice, eel, shrimp, spicy mayo and something else I can't quite remember. My lady and I are always looking for great new sushi places and were glad to stumble on this local gem.

I love this place! It's a small little joint set back a bit from Montvale Ave. Inside has around 10 to 15 tables & a sushi bar that seats 4. Don't let this small place fool ya- it's loaded with big flavor & presentation! The sushi is the freshest I've had in a loooong time, & it's by far the best sushi I've had north of Boston. You can't beat the price, especially with the quality. They don't serve alcohol but I saw people bring wine and glasses were provided. They offer take-out & they deliver with a $2.00 charge. All major credit cards are accepted. M-Th 11a-10p. FS11a-11p. Closed Sunday (as of 4/08). Enjoy!

Checked out this place while on a bus. trip. Well, I guess being from LA where there is a sushi place on every corner, I may have high expectations. Considering that there was no sushi places for miles, and I wanted sushi, this was the only option. First there was no Saki. Second, I hate when they serve soda in the cans.... The interior quality reminded me of the old Sizzler. The Sushi however were quite good. I got Tuna Tataki and some rolls. Bottom, line the food quality saved this place from 2 star rating..

The lunchtime bento box @ $6.95 tasted great and is a tremendous value. It came with an above average bowl of Hot & Sour soup (or miso if you prefer). You create your box from 4 options in 4 categories. I had tempura shrimp & veggie, lo mien noodles & veggies, 1/2 a Calif. roll and a spring roll. It was all really well done. I also had some saba (mackerel nigiri ) that was very satisfying. I've been twice and I think their nigiri is better than their maki. This is a no-frills place but if I lived closer I'd be a BYOB (according to other reviews) dinner regular.

Kyotoya has the best box lunch deal in town! 6.95 for appetizer, salad/ or soup, entree, rice/noodles. They are very friendly and their sushi is top quality. I lived in Japan so I'm very picky. They're great with kids too.

My husband and I frequent Kyotoya and we find it very enjoyable. We typically are there during the week between 7pm and 8pm and so it is generally not too busy. We almost always have the same waitress and we find her to be attentive in just the right way. There have been very few items that we have not enjoyed on the menu. One of our favorites is the Howard's Roll which used to be an occasional special and is now a permanent menu item.

Went there for dinner Saturday night. I'd definitely go back, but just b/c it's really close to my house and work and the food is ok. I had a dinner box, $12.95 (lunch boxes are $6.95), came with an app, side, entree, salad, rice, and miso soup. It's a good deal. I experimented and got the beef negima...wouldn't get that again, but good to know. It's thin slices of beef wrapped around scallion and cheese. I don't know what I was thinking really. When have I ever seen cheese at a japanese restaurant?!? It tasted like a philly cheesesteak sandwich. Which, of course, isn't bad, just not right in a japanese place. General Tsao's chicken and gyoza were pretty good. My husband got the 18 pc sushi plate, $20. The sushi looked fine, by no means great, and he said it tasted fine. We've had better (like blue fin in porter, fugakyu, shino's, etc), but this will do for the area. There was a young dude making the sushi, maybe if we got the women sushi masters that other reviewers were talking about we'd have liked it more. The service was good in the beginning, food came out fast and the guys were nice, a lot of bowing, but they never refilled our waters and never came with our check, we had to flag them down, and it was not busy at the time either.
It's BYOB, which personally I've never taken advantage of at any restaurant or ever seen happen, but as we were leaving we saw this older couple walk in with a bottle of something. That's kinda cool. Like I said, we'd go back. I'd even order delivery from there, which they do. But keep your expectations mediocre. -

Ambience was nice, and the service is pretty good. The sushi is ok, not great. The tempura was good.

Sushi is inconsistant at best. Once they served my sashimi almost completely frozen ! When I complained they made a bunch of excuses and didn't even bother to replace the entree.
