Good sushi with terrible service.

My group took advantage of the all you can eat sushi for $23/person (currently available sun.-tues.) and everyone thought the sushi was tasty and above average.  We ate family style and everyone got to be a little adventurous and try something different.

The one downside of doing the all you can eat sushi special is that I probably didn't save much or any money in the long run.  The portions are generous, and after eating about 3 rolls I was stuffed!  The miso soup was alright and the salad was mostly iceberg lettuce--not very tasty (or even nutritious).

The major complaint with Kyoto was our waiter.  He lost our order about 3 times, had trouble communicating with us (unsure if it was a language barrier issue) and after an hour of sitting of waiting for food that was never coming, we finally got a different waitress to help us out.  He was the worst waiter I've had in the last few years by far.  Some of the members of my group ate here a couple times before without any problems with the service.  I cannot imagine this waiter lasting long at this restaurant so hopefully you don't see him if you eat here.

I think I'll return to Kyoto in a few months to make sure that our crappy waiter has enough time to piss off enough customers and get fired.  Also, I'm indifferent about the all you can eat special and would probably order off the regular menu.

Not much has changed since my last review, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that for once we were not the only customers in the restaurant. We came for the Sunday lunch specials and the place was nearly packed. I believe it is under new ownership and all of their new menu boards were quite nice.

There were six of us and we easily ate over $600 worth of sushi for a steal. One of their big promotions is the All You Can Eat Sushi, which comes with miso soup, a little salad, your choice of sushi and rolls, and a dessert. It's under $25, so if you order a combination of at least two things then you've basically eaten your money's worth and then some. The only catch is that you have to eat everything you order or you will be charged a la carte prices for the leftovers.

This time around I had a better experience with the sushi than before. It's still not the best fish that I have ever had at a sushi place, but I'm always impressed by the soup, ice cream and other ingredients in the rolls. The smoked salmon inside the sunshine roll blew my mind. The raw salmon that topped it was so-so; however, the vegetables and sauces that go with it made up for what it lacked in the fish flavor department.

I've been to Kyoto on numerous times to take advantage of the "all you can eat" sushi on Sundays (through Tuesday I believe) and a lot of those occasions have been with good friends and family.  On all of these occasion the sushi was great as always and I have no complaints about the food which I consider to be one of the best Sushi place in the Milwaukee Area.  If the ratings were based solely on the food, then I'd give this place a 5 stars with no questions asked but my problem was with the service.  The problem I had was that the service was good at the beginning of our time there but the more we ate, the more the waiter/waitress got an attitude and the longer it took for our food to get out.  It's not that they're swamped with orders either because at times, there are probably only 3 or so occupied tables in the restaurant.  And I'm talking about maybe on our 3rd round that we received this treatment.  It's not like we've been there for hours and refused to leave even when stuffed.  We're still, in my opinion, within our rights to order more as paying customers considering it is an "all you can eat" special.  I am by no means a difficult customer, as a matter of fact, during a couple of these experiences the order was "accidentally" swapped somehow and we ended up with a cheaper roll (That is if it was ordered off the regular menu) and we didn't complain because it took too long for the wrong roll to come out.  It would take even longer for the order to be placed again and our food prepared.  Though not all of our waiters were like this, there are some that maintained their high level of professionalism during all interactions with us and got our food to us accurately and in a timely manner.  Too bad this can't be said about all the waiters there.

I'll still personally dine at this restaurant and I'd just like to post this as a sort of warning to those looking to try this place out.  Nothing wrong with the food, just the service at times can be a little rude and unwelcoming especially to those of us that are paying their bills.  Good luck out there (especially with the waiter/waitress) and hope you guys love the sushi there as much as I do.

My husband and I love this little place.  It's great for a cheap and quick Japanese fix.  Food is good, but location is not ideal (inside a cheezy strip mall w/small parking lot) but it's worth it.  Huge variety of sushi rolls which is great since I go for the veggie ones and they have several good options.

Excellent tea, they even have the funny bubble tea I've had in Hong Kong.  And they make a decent smoothie too...!

My only complaint would be they need more vegetarian lunch options.  They have these cute lunch boxes, my mother-in-law ordered one a few visits ago and I wanted one but realized the other day when we went there they are all meaty.  They looked good and are cheap with a good variety of a hot dish along w/the rolls, rice, salad, soup but none are for vegetarians.

Service is good, although the last time we came w/an online coupon from http://entertainment.com and they seemed confused.  They charged us 6.63 for our lunch and when we told them it took awhile to correct.  But they are very friendly and helpful in giving suggestions when you're unsure about the food, which is helpful!

I've been eating Sushi for about 18 years.  I used to frequent Chicago's sushi restaurants and was eventually unfortunate enough to return to Milwaukee.  There are several sushi locations in the Milwaukee are, eastside of course, oddly 2 near Southridge, and then Fujiyamas on Hwy 100.  More in other locations of course, but that is my area(s).  In the past I preferred Japanica to Kyoto.  Fujiyama has always been a tremendous disappointment, including two recent total wastes of time and money.   Japanica has superb ambiance, and good sushi.  It used to be superb ambiance and sushi.  Now on to Kyoto.  For me, money was never an object when eating sushi.   I really didn't care, but surely do now.  Regardless, the sushi at Kyoto's is absolutely first rate, prepared to perfection, fresh and delicious.  Most of that has to do with the chefs.  I recently had a roll that combined spicy tuna roll topped with eel.  It was absolutely fantastic, huge and a value at any price.  I also loved a recent roll "Toro Roll", which was elegantly wrapped in a light green something.   it was delicious beyond words.  Toro is a more expensive, tastier, fattier tuna, but worth it for those that desire the finest.  I've had the "all-you-can-eat" sushi on M,T and Sun I think.  It is an incredible value, but I avoid this value, because I feel like I am stealing - it is unfair, because I can eat far too much sushi.  For those of you that don't mind taking advantage of people or restaurants, the all-you-can-eat will leave you pleased.  All I can say in closing is that it has been many years since I've had a solid exclusive choice for sushi, and Kyoto's hands down is that place.  It's great to know that when I am hungry for sushi, I've got the right place to go to, and I know the sushi will be first class.
