2 reviews for Kwan Downtown Chinese Restaurant
This place is inside of a little lobby area, so you have to go in the lobby which leads to several businesses and then through the door to the Kwan restaurant. The interior is rather drab and unkempt due to its age. A brush up paint job would it wonders. There are no windows into the restaurant except for the all glass door, which results in the interior being rather dark. Coupled with the dated interior styling and the dim lighting the atmosphere detracts from the experience. I visited during the lunch hour, where they have a buffet from 11 AM to 2 PM.
The food choices available in the buffet are rather paltry. The most disappointing were the noodles, they were actually down right bad. Very small size and loaded with filler additions to thin out the noodles. The fried rice was adequate at best. The white rice was definitely better. There was supposedly some sort of pot stickers, but it looked like Salisbury steak surprise drowning in gravy and there was no way I was going near that dish. The fruit actually looked fresh.
The deep friend concoctions were acceptable but nothing to spend any real praise on. It is a little over priced given the food quality and selection. You can certainly eat here when you are burned out on other options in the area as long as you know what you are getting yourself into and are under no illusions of having a spectacular meal. You are unlikely to get sick from eating here as my lunch companions have eaten here several times and everyone reported they made it through the rest of the day without getting ill.
There were several people who walked in well before the scheduled close of the lunchtime buffet only to discover that there was not much left to choose from because the staff was taking down the buffet setup. They were hardly enthusiastic about their jobs. When we went to pay at the counter for the buffet the lady was chatting away on the phone in Mandarin not in the least bit interested in hanging up to ease our checkout process.
I tried to go into Kwan's about 8pm on a weekday, seeing that the sign clearly stated it was open until 8:30pm. This time is posted on the main street entrance, and again several times on the entrance to the restaurant itself. So 8pm didn't seem very late.
When I got to the door the lights were out and it was clear that the business was closed. It's unfortunate that the incorrect time is plastered everywhere because i would like to try this spot.
