Review Highlights
excellent food ! great quality ! made fresh everyday
we love the black lentils, dahi bhalle chaat, lamb wrap, chicken
and saag / roti combo very much.
all the desserts and sweets are also first class.
my fav. gajar halwa, suji halwa and gulab jamuns
it is better than most indian restaurants in the bay area.
Fraud Alert!
The man/owner at the counter will do everything in his capacity to get you to order more. For e.g confuse non-Indians folks to order boneless dishes when they already got enough chicken in their thalis which come with chicken with bones. You end up throwing food but he gets his cash.
Fraud alert : if you order sweets you never get to see their weight. Make sure you ask him to show the actual weight.
I saw a guy catching this owner recently with my own eyes. After that I got my sweets weighed too and got back $3. He was embarrased. Overall I felt both husband and wife managing the store have good cooks inside but they themselves are rude and cunning.
i wish i could give it more stars, but i'm afraid it just doesn't compare to the other indian restaurants in the area. i didn't try any of the sweets since it was lunch (and i shouldn't indulge too much). so this is only based on their "savory" items.
i ordered the chicken and one veggie combo for $6.49. i asked what kind of chicken they had. he asked me if i wanted boneless or with bones. when i told him "boneless" and then i ordered the combo, he told me that the combo only came w/ chicken w/ bones. that's kind of weird if they have boneless chicken dish as an option. i think he wanted me to order a separate boneless chicken dish. i found 2 pieces of chicken that was mostly bones. i even almost choked on a small piece of bone, which i successfully swallowed. i thought i needed a heimlich. the sauce also wasn't very thick, which i wouldn't have minded if it had enough chicken meat in it.
i chose a yogurt-based veggie dish. this dish was okay.
i liked how the naan was fresh, but the rest of the entrees were just okay. i noticed that another customer got WAY more veggies in his styrofoam dish. what's w/ all the styrofoam dishes? they're such wastes for dine-in.
i can now understand why the restaurant wasn't very crowded during the lunch hour.
Not sure why this place has so many bad reviews. Looks like I am one of the few lucky ones who got good service/food. I have been to this area so many times, but I have never really noticed this place. This place was just a random pick from my GPS.
The food was fresh and hot. This is not the regular spicy Indian food joint, they serve authentic Punjabi food, which is not so spicy, but a comfort food.
Great for Parathas and Naan... The items in the front counter are not the best... The owner tries to make you buy other things Even though their paratha is good, the owner tries to rip you off by charging extra for raita or pickles even though it is included.
Their rotis (also sold at India cash and carry) are the worst
The Good: Parathas and Naan
The Bad: Stale and tasteless Buffet. Paratha normally comes with Picklers and Raita... Sometimes they will tell you to pay extra for Pickles and Raita
The Worst: They cheat on sweets and if you order a la carte, they give you the same stale stuff from the buffet. if you try and order something else that is not in buffet, they would say that either they did not make it or push you to choose something from the Buffet
As others stated here, the owner and his wife are cunning and try to bilk money from clients....
i was always curious about this restaurant; both when it was lucky dhaba and after it changed to kwality sweets. i like mithai, but i can't eat too much sweet stuff in one sitting. i came here mostly just wanting to check out the food. it was ok.
some positives:
- the food was pretty hot.
- the naan was fresh.
- the palak paneer had plenty of paneer.
- big enough portions to be filling without going to a buffet.
some negatives:
- kind of overpriced for what it is
- the goat and chicken curries that come with the lunch specials don't have much meat.
- they waste lots of styrofoam.
- not the greatest service
this place kind of reminds me of spice hut down the street. even though other yelpers really bashed spice hut, i found it to be not that bad. i'd rather go to spice hut than here.
I was driving around the area and saw Kwality Sweets in this neighborhood plaza. I was like what the heck is this place? I like the wordplay on "Quality" The name sure hooked me in. So I took a peak and realized it was Indian Fast food n bakery. I very rarely try out Indian cuisine because im not to familar with it. But today was the "Let's try Indian fare day" :}
So, is it really quality? It's just okay for me. Service is alright, the lady explained some of the dish's and what she recommended. Whoa, she talks super quick. I was going to just order a bunch of Parathas but im wishy washy so I ended up getting the chicken with one veggie combo platter. It comes with Raita (yogurt dip), choice of veggie side dish (i chose the sauteed eggplant), jasmine rice with peas, and the main entree Chicken with maad spices and oil, I also ordered a plain naan to soak up food with.
Raita is okay, flavor could be better. It goes well with the chicken though. The chicken dish is like super oily and has lots of exotic spices and oils so the yogurt creams it out bit. One thing that isn't too great were the chicken portions. I ordered to go, so what I received in the styrafoam container had two ity bity chicken thigh pieces with the bone in, barely any meat. They give hella sauce instead though. Oh yea, the sauce has a deep yellow tint and will stain very easily so please be carefull when eating! The container top was on the table top at home and it left a faint stain that I couldnt get out. anyhoo The Naan was good chewy and rice was fluffy. I liked the eggplant side dish, but its oily too. Overall not bad, but meat portions are lacking. I will try their desserts next time around, so I guess they are better known for sweets then huh? idk :P
lucky dhabha has a new name..kwality sweets and foods. They now also have indian sweets aka mithai..i tried a couple of different varieties and was impressed. The food quality is also very good. What I like about this place is that the food is very much like home cooking - not much oil and flavorful. The place is also pretty clean unlike the other cheap Indian joints in the area. Since I am such a regular here, here is a list of my recommendations for fellow yelpers:
1) The mooli paratha and aloo parathas
2) Chana Bathura
3) Aloo Gobhi sabji or the aloo mattar with chapatis
So what's the difference between Indian fast food and Indian BUFFETS? They're already made just sitting there.
For the price and convenience, you can't really expect too much. I went for a late lunch and so it was mostly empty. The place was clean and I didn't have to wait. I got a two veggie dish combo that came with daal, yogurt, naan, and a little side of onions and olives. The naan was huge, I could've made a medium pizza with everything on my plate. It was okay tasting, I liked the texture better - kind of flat but airy in the middle. The vegetables were good, just had avoid scooping the oily parts.
I wished they used less oil, but I also recall Amber India's buffet just as greasy as well.
This place is an embarrassment to Indian food (please go to Mynt, Amber, or Bombay Gardens).
When I came here I found the place to be dirty, poor service and so so food.
I ordered the channa bhatura- which was not so great. The bhatura was very oily and greasy and channa was ok- but very bland.
The place is cheap- but the quality of the food is not great. I would urge people to go elsewhere for much better Indian food.
Terrible food, service and the place looks dirty to cap it off.
It's kinda like the last kid on the playground to be picked for a kickball game... you're better off without him.
tasteless food and not a sweet but sour/tart lassi :(
Not only that, I had a stomach ache immediately after eating that foood....
the only upside was.... that when I complained about the lassi being bad, the lady was kind enough to refund me, however in the end, when I was done w/ my food, i just wanted to get out.... the reason I point this out cuz ITS A RARITY at small Indian joints like Lucky Dhaba.....
anyway, there are far better places in the South Bay and the vicinity of Lucky Dhaba that one should go before deciding to try this place out...
I go here very frequently - 3 times a week - so I can't really give it less than 3 stars, can I?
This comes closest to homemade Indian food, which is great because I'm usually too lazy to cook. Most of the things on offer are less oily than traditional restaurant fare, and I manage to delude myself into believing that it's healthier than other places.
The service is "below average" at best. At worst it's "scary". The couple that runs the place are about as moody as they come and so some days I get a cheery personal greeting, and on other days I need to make do with a grunt.
In keeping with true Indian traditions the servings can be small, and the pieces of paneer in most of the paneer dishes are significantly fewer than they should be.
But at the end of the day, it's quick, less unhealthy than alternatives and I rather like the taste of what I do get there.
An Indian Fast Food Restaurant!!
I used to have one customer/friend always took me here to get Chai tea to go. Their Chai is one of the best I have ever had.
There are always a lot of Indians coming for lunch. I bet it's pretty authentic even though the place looks ghetto. Today's my first try on their lunch platter with the same customer again since we needed a quick luncheon. Their Goat curry is phenomenal. I have seen couple desert dishes that interest me but I really couldn't remember the names. My Indian customer is helpless as well due to he was not that authentic, born in the USA.
Oh well, next time I will still come to try some deserts out with my favorite Chai.
Not bad at all for a fast food Indian joint. The main drawbacks are (1) most of the food is already cooked, so it is served lukewarm/warm and (2) the food is on the greasy side. I like how the place is no frills and has a good array of curries, parathas (pan fried Indian flatbread, sometimes stuffed), and even some desserts (two gulab jamuns for $1.99). They have a faucet in the dining room (so Indian). They play Indian movies. It's definitely no frills, reasonably priced and with generous portion sizes. Tables tend to be dirty but I don't mind.
I was excited to see an Indo-Chinese special on the list of today's specials. But they had run out, so I had a vegetarian meal ($5.99). I liked the sambar the best. It was thicker than average and slightly spicy. Very tasty. The spinach with paneer cheese was pretty good. The basmati rice wasn't particularly noteworthy; it had a few peas. I had something that looked like a meatball in a spicy tomato based sauce but it seemed to be made out of cabbage and something else (not sure what). The raita was too sour. Nothing was that spicy.
If you order paratha (and they have half a dozen varieties including gobi/cauliflower, spinach, omelette, etc.), they do throw it on the griddle and serve it up piping hot. They're oily but not bad.
Seems like you have to ask for the chai (I wish that it were self serve; I love chai). I was the only non-Indian there and noted it was popular with Indian families. If you don't know that aloo = potato and gobi = cauliflower, bring an Indian menu because there are no descriptions of the food. Credit cards accepted.
Don't Do It!! There's NOTHING Lucky about Lucky Dhaba.
The food is greasy and mediocre, it's cafeteria style service
with a really, really surly staff that glower at you while you
order and pay. The chai however, is pretty decent, so if
you're shopping next door at India Cash & Carry (which I
love) buy and chai and shop... BUT DON'T EAT HERE!
On the entertainment side of things, the animated corpse
otherwise known as the ?owner?, ?manager? is fascinating
to watch... I've never seen someone scowl non-stop in my life
like this... Kinda like seeing the kids taunt the Beefeater's in
front of Buckingham Palace in London to see if they'll "acknowledge"
you...
Reading the Menu is like reading your Credit Card agreement, there are a lot of fine prints. The food is just plain bad. This is the first time i have walked out of a restaurant feeling hungry (after spending close to $8).
Eat anywhere else but here
I went here for lunch based on an Indian colleague's recommendation. She said it's among the best Northern Indian restaurants around. I'm Chinese so what do I know??
ATMOSPHERE:
It's in a strip mall with plenty of parking. The restaurant is fast food so don't expect comfortable seating and ambiance. They have a large television playing Indian movies. It's also not very clean. But then again, neither is McDonald's.
SERVICE:
Quite good! The man behind the counter was friendly. The food came very fast.
MENU:
The food is laid out behind the counter so you can see it. Everything looked quite fresh and the variety was pretty good. It had food for both meat eaters and vegetarians.
FOOD:
It was pretty good but nothing to write home about. Maybe it's just me but things just don't taste the same when it's served on a styrofoam plate. The naan was large, hot and fresh which was great.
VALUE:
Average. Decent deal for a decent meal.
OVERALL:
Worth trying if you have a short lunch break, but if you have the options to go to the many other restaurants in the area, I'd recommend doing that instead.
Apparently they have changed their name to the charming moniker of "Kwality". Too bad people have such a low view of this place, because they make some delicious desserts. Of all the mithai my co-workers have brought in, these were my favorite!
The place used to serve one of the best Punjabi food. Try chole-bature or even the wraps. Most times their lassi also tastes good. It is fairly neat and has prompt service. However I do not find their non-veg items qualify as authentic Indian taste.
The recent Dhaba food is tasteless....less salt, less spice...just some adhoc mix of masala. Not my recommendation.
now this place is not tht dirty but food is still sick as usual.....
sweets r not good ...i love lovely sweets nsnaks much better than this atleast the food there is yum .
pl dont go here if ur looking for inexpensive place try lovely sweets n snaacks ...else go to mynt or bombay garden etc
I am one of those UNLUCKY people who ate at the LUCKY DHABA!
Ordered dinner thali and all the stale food from the morning was watered down at night...
Naan was good, paneer was watery, bhel puri was dry (seperate order), rice was cold, bhindi fry was okay, dhal okay, onion and pickle on the side (were watered down as well - This is a first, I have seen onion and pickles being watered).
There is no service and the place is like a prison mess and the food matched its ambience.
The owner/cashier seems to be one of those people who must have not smiled in his life ever or perhaps, he turned out that way, after eating his own food.
I would never go back to this place again!!!
i should have read the previous review(s) first. ordered the goat curry which shows is 6.99.for almost $9 they "threw in" two sides - okra and eggplant. both were ok but very greasy. the goat curry had decent flavor, but was also greasy. the worse part was that there was one TINY piece of meat - the rest was bone and gristle. disgusting. when i brought this to the owner/mgr's attention i was told oh, you should have gotten one or two small pieces of meat. oh, so that is all one can expect? for $9?????? they use tons of unrecyclable styromfoam ( 'cos the food is so greasy it seeps into the containers) and wrap everything in unrecyclable plastic wrap! what a big disappointment. save your $$ and go elsewhere..
Walked in, never ate a thing, it looked just that bad. I saw almost no food that anyone would want to eat. They might as well ask "Would you like some food with that gelatinous, oozing, congealed puddle of ghee?" Looked and smelled absolutely disgusting. It's kinda rude, but I walked out without asking about anything, it just was that greasy looking, not a great sign.
My rating speaks for it self.
I have never gotten anything here except plain naan. It is by far my favorite naan. Whenever I need a large number of fresh naan, this is where I go.
In fact, the naan actually freeze well.
Food here is bad. It used to be good under the old owners, with the new owners, the food is just awful. The lady behind the counter came and ate a packed lunch from home in front of us! I have never returned to the restaurant after that.
fast and cheap but not the best of the sunnyvale bunch. with so many competitors in the area i would think they would pay more attention to service and presentation but this place is barebones. i guess they cater more to the quick lunch. i had the butter chicken (3/5 stars for blandness) and the chilli chicken (3/5 as well). each of the curries only had 4 pieces of chicken but that was not really a concern of mine. the garlic naan was excellent, as was the onion kulcha and the plain parathas. quick stop if you are in that complex, otherwise you can find better food just a hop, skip, and a jump away
Terrible Terrible food! Everything is just so bland. I suspect the cooks are not even Indian. During my first visit, I had some of the pre-cooked dishes and found them to be tasteless. The next time, I ordered the chicken tikka which made me wish I had walked across to Shan for their kabobs. Not going back there unless every other Indian restaurant shuts down for some strange reason
Average food. Would not recommend. Very limited quantity also.
This is a ok place. Try their Goat Curry......
food is consistently good, can't beat the price. chat and snacks aren't all that great, but curries are quite decent. perfect for a quick lunch.
horrible food. lloks stale and I ended up having an upset stomach, go to lovely's instead
