I stopped by for one of their lunch specials and I can re-affirm my 3 star review. I skipped the sushi and went with their cooked foods this time.
The hostess/waitress was the hardest working person I've seen and deserves some accolades. Not only was she taking multiple delivery orders over the telephone but she was also waiting on 6 tables simultaneously.
Still, she brought out my diet coke, miso soup and salad within a minute of me ordering. After 10 minutes, my crispy hot chicken katsu bento box arrived. The box also came with 2 small dumplings, a california roll and additional white rice.
Total with tax and tip ran me $16. Solid, decent food at a full service restaurant.
Cheers!
N.

Back in NY and still trying to get over my disappointment with the sushi in San Diego.

Took a date here. Trust me, the all-you-can-eat sushi was her idea. I just had a hunch that the night would not end in the way I had hoped. The sushi was average, the girl was extremely fussy about her food, and I accidentally left her scarf at the table. She left the table to use the little girls' room when the bill came, which I thought was very rude even though I was going to pay anyway. She took so damn long so I figured she was dropping her own rolls into the toilet, so I grabbed her coat and bag, leaving her scarf hanging precariously on the chair, and waited outside while craving a cigarette. I don't even smoke.
She didn't realize her scarf was missing until about an hour later. I apologized and offered to buy her another scarf, and she said "okay" without the slightest bit of hesitation. Luckily for me, no retail store was open at the time. We hit a bar and she paid for the drinks, so I evened out for the night. I never called her again.
Anyway, back to the food. It's all-you-can-eat quality for $30+. Need I say more?
I have to admit, I was hungry after a walk in the park. My family suggested this place saying it was a good lunch spot, so we tried it.
FOOD: We ordered the Pork Katsu, Ginza roll, Shrimp Tempura roll, and the tuna and salmon sashimi. The two rolls were excellent and very tasty even without with the wasabi soy sauce. The tuna sashimi was a little stringy. The pork katsu was a little thick and dry to my tasting. I think I'd stick with the sushi rolls.
Typically sushi lovers can handle a little saltiness, but this place is just over the top. The spicy rolls are so salty that you can hardly taste the fish! When I treat myself to sushi I rarely leave a piece on my plate, but Kumo made it easy to do that. And for a person who can eat japanese multiple times a week, I haven't had it since I ordered it from Kumo a week ago.... apparently it left a bad taste in my mouth....
Unfortunetly, central park west is not a place for fine dining, so I wasn't really expecting much.
I've never been to the Kinoko place and I have no desire for AYCE. So my review is based on solely being hungry after walking around the park, and wanting something cheap other than fast food, nor the one too many pinkberries or starbucks in a 2 block radius.
Me and the mom got two bento box (Salmon and Chicken teriyaki) and a beer. It wasn't the greatest, it wasn't poisonous. We were hunger, we got our bellys filled and it was under 20 bucks so I was content.
The staff was very patient and nice about the pickyness of seating location with my mom. So 3.5 stars for them.
We could not get enough! Best lunch specials we've ever found! Tasty flipp'n tuna and salmon!! Omg i loved this lunch!
I always order delivery from Kumo and I've tried both the sushi as well as the Soba noodle (soup or dish). I would have to say, being a huge sushi fan, the seafood here is never fresh. I recommend ordering the Chicken or Vegetable Yaki Soba. It's the best thing on the menu.
I never really liked this place even when it was called Kinoko, but they had a good all you can eat deal that my friends loved. Now, the all you can eat is back at $27 + 18% gratuity on the total with tax. I think this place is a total rip off. It's a matter of time until this place shuts down. It's always empty. I ordered the chirashi and it came with unseasoned rice?! WTF? Who serves plain white rice with sushi? It had some furikake (dry seasoning for rice) on top which is totally unheard of. To confirm, I tried some of my friend's rice from his sushi. It was the same thing. I was a little apprehensive when his all you can eat plate came. It smelled a little fishy to me which is a big no-no. The other issue with this place is that it's inconsistent. The same hand roll would be made differently if ordered at different times. The tempura roll came with eel sauce the first time, then spicy mayo, then back to the eel sauce. Head to Neo or Haru if you want sushi in the area.
I order from them all the time. Only because I live close by and they are fast. Nothing special. But it is fine and reliable. Nice lunch specials.
Best sushi in the area. The service is excellent and the fish is so fresh. It is one of my favorite restaurants. I work in the area and I usually go there about 3 times a months.
Standard and good sushi. They had a 50% off sushi and sashimi for lunch. It looks like the regular lunch deal is pretty good as well. Very good service with an attentive waiter. I also saw they have Tempura Ice Cream which is my favorite so I'll have to go back and give it a try!
Fancier and better decorated than its predecessor, the beloved all-you-can-eat sushi joint, Kinoko! Not sure how this place will fare in the Upper West Side. Food was okay not great, but it's still too early to tell. I'm really bummed to have lost one of my Kinoko faves --smoky whitefish sushi handroll!
forced to go back out of convenience, a receipt lay draped across the fish of a sushi regular dish - yuck.

A great lunch special option for the UWS (I work just a few blocks away)...their shrimp tempura roll is delish!
Had it delivered; was fast and cheaper than average. I'm no sushi connoisseur, but it was definitely fresh and tasty. Loved the shrimp-asparagus roll, but honestly, I don't know how anyone could mess that up.
Fact: One order of their edamame will last as a snack through a full episode of "House" (and it's appropriately buttery, too).
ok service ok food but i work a few blocks away so i will go back for their Shrimp Shumai, plus its a great place to go after work , however if i did not work around 72nd Street did i would not go back
