Getting the crap scared out you sure does work up an appetite...
After driving back down Haleakala (an 11 mile series of straight U-turns while avoiding inexperienced tourists on bikes), both the boyfriend and I were white knuckled and nauseated. Despite this, we stopped at the Kula Lodge to use the bathroom and attempt breakfast. As soon as we stepped inside our stomachs lifted...in a good way.
Enjoyed the "Mountain of a Meal" (eggs, bacon, pancakes) and the BF had the Belgian waffle with fresh berries. Yum Yum Yum! By the end of the meal we had completely forgotten that we were about to hurl just an hour before :) Now THAT's a good breakfast!
We visited Kula lodge for breakfast after viewing sunrise on Haleakala, and it a popular stop for breakfast or lunch before or after a visit to the famed crater. The Kula lodge looks like it somewhat stuck in time, somewhere in the 70's, but the view alone makes up for the lack of interior decor. Since it's pretty much the only place to stop by on the way back from the crater for breakfast, it was kind of the only place recommended to us. I am sure it's popularity stems mainly from this and also for the views.
We did not wait long to be seated at all. We ordered coffee and the Haleakala Sunrise combo, which is eggs and sausage, piled on top of pancakes. We added a side of macademia nuts, which were nice and toasted, to top off our pancakes. I gave hubs the bacon and eggs, and ate the pancakes with the nuts and a combo of maple syrup and coconut syrup. Yummy! Service was good, and the waitstaff were friendly.
Make sure you take a look around outside before/after your meal as there are beautiful views in the gardens. The lodge and restaurant could use a good updating though, but I think the food was pretty good (at breakfast), and since we shared the huge breakfast platter, it was a decently priced meal. It's worth a stop if you really want to enjoy your time at the crater.
Very very very good. I split two breakfast dishes with my girlfriend: the breakfast burrito and the pineapple macadamia nut pancakes. It was perfect. As Mitch Hedberg keenly noted, everyone always gets sick of pancakes half way through. This combo was great.
After breakfast, be sure to head outside and check out the gardens, the view and the bizarre brickwork on the one-of-a-kind patio. It's really worth stopping by just to see that.
Quick overview: stopped here after Haleakala & we waited for about 10 minutes to be served, then about 5-10 for someone to notice we were sitting then when we ordered water to start, both glasses were dirty (I sent mine back, bf did not...said it was 'sanitized dried on food') waited another 10-15 minutes for our order to be taken (by the hostess) then another 15 for the food to arrive. They are very lucky that even the service was slow, the food was good & the view spectacular. We were seriously there for 1 hour & 45 minutes.
But in all honestly, I'd give i another chance. But that's it :)
Where do you go when you're getting over altitude sickness and potential thought after your dad nearly drives over the edge after avoiding cows (COWS!) on the road to Haleakala?
There is nothing like huge, soft and light buttermilk pancakes with eggs and Portuguese sausage to give you the reality check that yes, you are still alive. The service was decent, but the food and the view earned this places its 4 stars. If my stomach wasn't queasy -- and if I were as ravenous as a Sumo wrestler on a 4-hour fast -- I would have ordered the Loco Moco as well: 2 burger patties with gravy on top of rice and topped with eggs. A small taste from my sister's plate *almost* made me regret my order.
Definitely recommended as a stop on the way down from Haleakala
If you're doing sunrise at Haleakala, whether you live here and are carting company up or are a tourist, hitting Kula Lodge on the way back down is a requisite. Mac nut pancakes and hot cocoa with a view of the valley is an experience that's on par with watching the sun kiss Hana good morning.
Three stars for the pizza, burgers, and salads. Pizza was much faster than the other food -- we took half of it home anyway, and it was good the next day.
Ten stars for the view! Five for the convenience of a nice place to stop on the way down the mountain.
We hit this place for b'fast on the way up to the summit of Haleakala. It is an ideal place to stop on the way up or down, but I'd recommend planning one or the other since the lavender farm is the other direction and you'd likely want to stop there too since you're already upcountry.
The best thing about this place was the view, by far. Impeccable. I just kept staring outside and thinking how nice it would be to do any number of things on Maui... get Maui'd/honeymoon, or a vacation with my sweetie, or live here, retire here....etc.
For food, we split 2 things: the vegetarian eggs benedict, and the malted belgian waffles. The stars of the meal were the fresh kula strawberries on the waffles, and the country style potatoes (with parsley? I dunno, but was great). The meal was verrrry filling but is perfect for starting a long day of driving around upcountry - we weren't hungry again until late afternoon.
The Maui blend coffee was lovely, as well.
This place was highly recommended to us by several sources, so we decided to stop here after our zipline adventure.
Seating: We waited for about 5 minutes before anyone saw us or said anything to us, and I couldn't see anyone who worked here.
View: once we were seated it was fabulous. Rear view of the west part of the island. Unfortunately we had the back corner seat which included complimentary bugs for the duration of our stay.
Service: I think our waitress was imported from Denny's. We got a running commentary on what was happening with her as it happened. She was loud and just isn't suit the place at all. Took her a while to get us the check as well.
Food: VERY disappointing. Not gross, but a Subway sandwich beats the pants off what I had. The prices of everything were about double what they are worth, and in the case of my chicken ceasar wrap triple, and it was pretty awful to boot.
In sum, AVOID this place. It's a complete tourist trap. From the reviews it looks like it was once something great, but not anymore.
One of the nicer restaurants in the area, staff was helpful, food was very good. The only thing I didn't like very much was the crab cakes; it lacked flavor and was covered in a heavy sweet sauce. The dining area has a fantastic view of the costal area below, and would probably be best enjoyed with a nice bottle of wine.
We stopped in to the lodge for a big, scenic breakfast prior to making the trek up to Haleakala Park.
I read some of the reviews before we got up there and obviously the reviews aren't that great.
Despite the pricey menu the view really is pretty- and shame on those who think they are going to get 5 star food at a place like this! It is just like going to a hotel restaurant; expectations are usually too high and thus, not met.
I thought our breakfast was fine. Lots of fresh fruit and a heart-attack of a dish, the Bananas Foster (which they no longer post on the menu- perhaps too many fatalities).
I would come again for the view but if your wanting better food quality than a Dennys- don't bother.
I'm totally over the Kula Lodge. It's not even worth it for the view anymore. I think the food just keeps getting worse every time I go. Most recently I went with my mom while she was visiting, and we had spring rolls - they must have forgotten to use hot water to soften the wrappers, or the wrappers were really old, because they were overly chewy and grainy and disgusting. My entree wasn't so good either, and the place is totally over priced. Not to mention it's a dirty old smelly lodge.
Plus now that I live in Kula, there's no point in going just for the view.
The decor and outside seating are great. We ordered a couple items that were average for a "lodge" but the pizza... was the best pizza I've ever had.
If you are upcountry and looking for a solid American style breakfast, the lodge is solid choice. The french toast is huge, filling and delicious (with or without the coconut syrup). Anything with bacon is great (non greasy, big meaty pieces). And their scrambled eggs are delicious. It may not be as unique as some of the places I love in Paia, but if you are way upcountry and maybe coming back from Hana the quick way, or hitting Haleakala early, this is a good place with an even better view.
I have eaten dinner here twice, and been very disappointed. The view is great, and the service was very good, but the food was shockingly disappointing given the location and the fact that it is the 21st century - the food is definitely a throwback to the 1970s. Nothing was terrible, and nothing was particularly good - and the prices are steep. After reading the other reviews I might come back for breakfast some time, just because the view and location are so great, but never again for dinner.
After our Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour, the pilot suggested for us to go to Kula Lodge for some breakfast. We obliged. Kula Lodge is situated near Mt. Haleakala, so it has some stunning views. It's basically american style breakfast items. I ordered the eggs benedict and my husband ordered a dish with steak in gravy. Mine was great for about 5 bites, then it started to get way too heavy for me. There was a LOT of sauce, and they laid it down heavy! My husband did not like the meat quality of his dish, but he continued to eat to the last bite (he hates to waste food). He suffered for it later, as he spent some quality time in the bathroom! The bill wasn't bad compared to Wailea area (about $25 for both of us). Make sure to check out the cute gift shops right next to the Lodge if you want to buy some trinkets and gifts for friends or just to walk off the 10,000 calories you just consumed for breakfast. I can't really ding this place for ONE dish I tried, but based on that, I would have to conclude the food here is just so-so. So thumbs up on the location, thumbs to the side for the food.
Not a lot of vegetarian options, especially not at lunch or dinner. Breakfast here is fine, but if they didn't have the exceptional Kula view it would be nothing special. We take friends here when they visit to enjoy the view and the garden, it's not somewhere I normally go.
Kula Lodge was an early stop on our "let's take a break from playing on the beach all day" outing. We had just seen 1-hour old baby goats and eaten lilikoi cheesecake at the Surfing Goat Dairy.... SO FUN. At any rate, our food was very good, with the not so tiny exception that my burger was cooked medium well when I ordered it medium rare. It's a good sign of a good burger that I ate it happily anyway. My mom, our Maui hostess, ordered the fresh rolls. They were out. She then ordered the mango barbequed ribs... also out. Her third choice, crab cakes, WERE available, and quite tasty.
Postscript: At the Kula Marketplace next door, you may purchase COCONUT CANDY made by "Coconuts and Bananas." We first ate this a few years ago on the road to Hana (Hana being also where we found fresh baked roadside BANANA BREAD.)
Decent view, not so decent food. The restaurant is in need of an overhaul to both its menu and furnishings. Overall, the food quality is not inline with the prices, and menu is quite boring. The view from the dining room is overrated, drive a little farther and see Haleakala Park for spectacular views instead. Be warned, there are few restaurants in that area, which is how we ended up there in the first place.
My Hawaiian buddy told me about Kula Lodge and insisted that my hubby and I go there after we watched the sunrise from the top of Haleakala. I'm glad he did.
The food is great. Ono Benedict and Loco Moco, with a side of pancakes. Everything was absolutely wonderful. This was the first place we encountered the ubiquitous coconut syrup - and we were HOOKED! The pineapple-apricot preserves and the fresh blackberry preserves were spectacular also.
The views are beautiful, and quite calming - especially if you're a little car sick from the twisty-turny drive up and down the mountain. (Dramamine, Kids: vote early, vote often!)
We visited again with friends for lunch after riding ATVs for several hours on our last full day on the island. Pasta Pesto (made with macadamia nuts instead of pine nuts) with grilled chicken and a spinach salad. Both were just great and enough for hubby and I to share.
The Kula Marketplace next door is a nice, large gift shop with all sorts of great things to take home to friends. The folks at Kula Lodge and Marketplace really make you feel the Aloha!
Well since most places were closed in the area for lunch today we had to settle and pick the Kula Lodge... I thought it was very quaint and cozy but that's not what its all about you gotta factor in a lot of things when making a restaurant and quaint and cozy is just a small part of it... I would have given them 2 and 1/2 stars but there is not an option so I took a vote and its a 2.... We started with a Mimosa it was ehh avg nothing spectacular then we got seated at a nice window table with a great view the waiter seemed a bit inexperienced we ordered a Soup and a Salad and then a Margarita Pizza to Share.... We both had a feeling knowing that the Pizza was being cooked on a Wood Burning Brick Oven that it was going to come out before our Soup and Salad and guess what it did.. That is 1 of my biggest pet-peeves... So we Started with the Pizza it was actually pretty good at that point I didn't want anything else but they started bringing over our Soup and Salad so oh well I figured what the hell... My date was told the soup of the day was New England Calm Chowder but our waiter was clueless it was Potato Cheese Soup and I got the Caprese Salad that was pretty bland the Balsamic had no flavor the the Tomatoes and Mozzarella were average.... I would give this place another try if I am up country maybe it was an off day maybe I will try it for breakfast we will see....
We stopped by for breakfast on our bike ride back down from Haleakala Park after watching the sunrise. The food is excellent and the our waitress was so nice and attentive. The view from the restaurant is breathtaking, and our food was cooked perfectly (I'm very picky about my eggs and bacon!). Definitely stop by - if you're not doing the bike ride, you can still get to the lodge by car.
The Kula Lodge serves the best breakfast ever. I don't know if it's because we were half awake and hungry from the pre-dawn trek up to the sunrise at Haleakala. The macadamia pancakes were huge and fluffy and my bf had the omelette, which were great too. Make sure you get there before the downhill bicycle riders.
Kula Lodge is on the way up Haleakala mountain. The weather is often cooler up here and its high enough that pine trees grow on the grounds. Most impressive is the view though. If you can swing a window table you can see all of the lowlands and most of west Maui from here. There is also a stone fireplace, and yes, it gets cold enough to enjoy it. Drinks are at least $10, and the food is also pricey. If you want to surprise the girlfriend, you could spend the night up here in one of the 'chalets' (their term, not mine). All of it is very nice, even if you don't opt to spend the night, get out the card and have a few drinks
As others have stated, the view is spectacular at the Kula Lodge restaurant. After being up since 3am to get up to Haleakala to see the sunrise (in our case we didn't see it because of a misty day =(... ) Kula Lodge was a good place to grab some food while trying not to fall asleep at the table. Their Kona coffee was of a pretty good blend, we really liked their Veggie Benedict, as well as Loco Moco. It's a great place to make a stop after trekking up to Haleakala, you can also do a quick shopping stop at the Kula Marketplace located right next to the lodge.
Breakfast at Kula Lodge complete with hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fireplace after waking up at 3am to see the sunrise at Haleakala = bliss. Try to beat the post-sunrise trekkers there by making a hasty retreat once that glowing ball of fire has emerged. The banana pancakes and ono (fish) benedict are great but really the best part about it is the view. Watching the entire island wake up over a nice steaming hot breakfast and planning the rest of your day on heavenly Maui is one of my favourite things to do in the world!
