I've passed this place numerous times on my way to work and the window displays always caught my attention. I finally decided to head in for a little lunch time shopping. I immediately noticed the bolts of fabric along the back wall. I don't know of too many places that still make custom tailored clothing. Having neither the funds nor need for bespoke clothing I stuck to the racks.
Most of the clothing fell into the category of contemporary rather than trendy. In my book that's a good thing. Being on the bleeding edge of fashion usually means spending a fortune for clothing that's going to look silly in just a few years. On the other handy a nice navy sweater, Fred Perry polo shirt or Spiewak jacket will look just as good 10 years from now as it does today.
Prices were up there but I've found over the years that more expensive clothes are often worth it. I have sweaters and shirts purchased at Barney's 10 years ago that still look great today. $150 for a shirt you'll wear for 10 years is a bargain compared to $50 for a shirt that will only look good for 2 years. Sadly, many people don't seem to get this. For those folks we have Old Navy, The Gap, H&M, etc. I should also point out that the Spiewak blazer I picked up was priced **less** than what Urban Outfitters or Nordstrom's charge. Always nice when you can shop local AND save money!
The selection is a bit thin but it is a small store. I should also point out not everything is on the floor. I had a hard time finding items in my size on the racks but the sales staff was able to pull out samples in the correct size from storage in back.
The staff was friendly and helpful without being pushy. They were more than happy to make numerous trips to the back room to search for items in my size.
Alright, gather round boys and girls, cuz Stephy's got a little story for ya called, "Never judge a book by its cover."
The story begins with two sassy gals on the hunt for some coffee. They hit a little mom and pop place but they are out of soy, booo. They then are forced to go to Starbucks and they order their soy vanilla lattes and begin to head back to the car to go shopping for cute coats. As they are approaching the car one of the girls points across the street and tells her friend that Kuhlman is a really cool little boutique and the two decide to stroll on over and check it out.
They walk in and the tag along gal glances at the racks of sparsely spaced out clothing, looks at one price tag and decides this place is too expensive and simply sips her latte and ignores its offerings. The other girl is looking through the racks and begins chatting up the owner. After a few moments, the girl starts pulling out a few things saying things like, "CUTE! Did you see this? Did you see this other one too?"
Uninterested, judgmental girl then walks over begrudgingly and looks at what her friend is pulling out and is totally surprised at the fantastic coat that her friend has pulled out. And what's this? It's on super sale markdown and is usually a few hundred dollars and on sale for $120? Saaahhhweet! She then sees it's a small and gets discouraged once again, but her friend asks the owner about other sizes and bam, out comes a Large. She then puts it on and finds the newest addition to her happy coat family!
Moral of the story, look at the racks, dig, pull things out and ask questions. The gentlemen here are totally helpful and had I not had the eagle eye of my fashionista friend I would have sadly missed out on my badass new coat and that would have sucked.
I love Kuhlman! The women's selection is not humongous, but neither is the store, so hey.
I hate to put this out there (because I am so, so selfish), but they have the very tippity top best selection of jewelry. And clearly I'm not the only person that thinks so, because a pair of earrings purchased at Kuhlman has officially earned the title of Most Complimented by Strangers Item That Amiee Has EVER Owned.
Bonus that the staff is super friendly.
Walked by post-Umi Happy Hour and was glad to find the shop open.
Nice selection of Nixon watches, Penguin Shirts, some J.Lindeberg, and Fred Perry.
I ended up getting a Fred Perry jacket, which is a nice change from the sea of North Face Fleece that I can't escape around here.
Great little shop that also sells woman clothing. First time I went in to get a pair of jeans hemmed, I walked out with 2 dresses and a bathing suit!
Its the best place to go for alterations. You pay more than you would at a cleaners but the quality is worth the price and they are really nice!
Their women's collection is only a small portion of the store, but there are a lot of great pieces in the mix. One of my favorite necklaces by a local designer was purchased there.
Went there in my search for the perfect coat; I didn't find it, but saw some other cool (expensive) gear. One unique aspect of this store is that they custom make/ tailor stuff. Also, if you get sick of shopping, have a drink at Cyclops next door.
Seattle isn't known for being an especially fashionable city, but this is one of a few good shops for men who aren't addicted to fleece.
I Love this place, but they scaled the women's selection down a lot. Apparently more men shop here than women, so they have to cater to who buys. Which makes sense.
I stop in here whenever in Belltown, definitely a fun place to shop and get something you didn't know you may have wanted. No pressure sales, friendly staff, try it out...
Great men's clothier, hip, mostly casual, not all too trendy. They have women's too but it is a bright spot in a sometime dull men's duds world. Tailoring as well.
I really like this place - I've found great accessories here, they have a good selection of designer jeans and t-shirts and the prices - while they can get up there - can also be found on the affordable side. while you won't find the breadth of similar stores like Ian or Zebra Club, they have a better stuff for the square footage. they can whip you up a custom suit from any of the swaths of cloth in the back! and the staff: rocks.
The first Mod-style clothier-tailor in Seattle. If for no other reason, that alone should place them in a category regarded as one of the top trend-casual shops in the Area. Men's & women's: Ben Sherman, Merc, Fred Perry, etc.
Rarely do I find things that fit, but at Kuhlman's just about everything works. The alterations are good also. Button up shirts and jeans can be pricey, but the jackets are very reasonable. Watch out, returns are store credit only.
Absolutely horrible customer service.
Although I was in another store this weekend that offered fantastic customer service...I was in San Francisco, and wanted to save my Nixon watch purchase for a local proprietorship. Reviews on Yelp have said that this was a great store with good service, so this was my first stop in Seattle. Let me just say this...I'm a big fan of buying local because I really value little boutiques. They lend a sense of style, ambiance, and customer service to an area...not to mention that it's got to be difficult to keep a little store going with skyrocketing overhead costs. I left Kuhlman understanding why I never see anyone in the store. The manager was unbelievably rude, and could have swayed my opinion because I tried several times to get them to help. I ended up walking out of there without any understanding of where the great reviews come from. My next trip to San Francisco, I'm marching my butt over to Hayes Valley to a great store called Nomads. The people there spent 30 minutes working with me on several variations of what I want. When they didn't have it, they offered to order it for me without having to pay...AND they also offered to help me find another store in the area that held exactly what I wanted so that I could buy the watch that day. Kuhlman did none of this. In fact, the manager suggested that I look it up on my own. By the way, the people at Nomads don't get commission.
