Update 11-22-2009
True to form! We just went in to watch the Bears game...my friend had a Corona, and I had. . .HOT CHOCOLATE! With a shot of Grand Marnier...
Our waiter was attentive enough, and we had a great time.
This is what I expect from Kroll's.

I SO want to give Kroll's 5 Stars, but waitress Tina and Manager Zack prevent that.

I think this is a great spot to watch a game and have a bite to eat while putting down a couple of beers. Nice layout. This place is huge! screens all over. But place lends itself for everything from a date to watching the game with the rest of the Bro's.
The food is delish! and there is always drink specials.
if in the south loop stop in here for a drink!! I did and ended up with a One nighter!! HA!!!!
Sorry, Kroll's. I wanna love ya, but you disappoint.
Service *
Whether Kroll's is full or empty, it's always terminally understaffed.
Food **
The menu is long, but the food tastes mostly of the generic, food-service variety (e.g. soups and salsa's seemingly straight out of a can.) Recommend shortening the menu and raising the quality.
Beer, Wine, Spirits ****
Pretty good selection, although they're sometimes out of specialty beers listed on the menu.
Interior ****
Kroll's is large, clean, and relatively spacious, which is rare for a sports bar.
Game Day Experience: *
Kroll's wants to be both a Packer and a Bear bar. This is, of course, impossible. As a Packer bar it falls woefully short. Typically the Packer game is shown on only one projection TV with way too little darkness and contrast, and there may not be audio. Service is terribly slow.
Kroll's is strangely quiet during football games. Raise the energy level with a DJ spinning fun music during buzz-killing television commercials. This might even keep people from bolting as soon as their game is over.
Penny walks into a Sports Bar...
...sounds like the start of a joke. Well, sometimes it is I suppose. But, it's Sunday and that means most likely, there's a Bears game on and I'm in for watching it (and trying to yell or cheer when everyone else does, as if I know what the crap is actually happening).
Kroll's is big with televisions or projection screens visible from almost every seat in the house. The menu is extensive but in keeping with our portly Chicago brethren, we stuck to fried food. Spicy, good buffalo wings, fried cheese curds and jalapeno poppers. Standard bar fare but judging by the burgers and sandwiches that went past me, I suspect the food gets better higher up the chain. Prices are pretty reasonable, too. e.g., a plate of smothered n' covered tater tots is only $5.
$5 20 oz Miller Lite drafts, only $6 for Leffe Blonde (whee!), but they also have a lot of other great beers on their list. The poor bartender was all on his own during a busy game so the wait for drinks was a bit long at times, but he was nice about it and our food came out quickly.
It's a good spot to watch the game, but I personally don't love sports bars (or sports, come to that) enough to go there during non-game days. Lively bunch, good people watching, if not a mild strip mall vibe to the joint.
First off, thank all that is holy for the one and only legit sports bar in the South Loop. With TV's aplenty and a fan-friendly atmosphere, it is the place to go to watch a big game in the area. I've always enjoyed going there to catch the Sox games or head there after a victorious Sox game. The wrap-around bar with an extensive beer list is a plus as well.
Pleasantries aside, I've tried several menu items and they all came up a little short. I guess I should expect that at a sports bar, but for such an extensive menu, and half of the establishment suited for restaurant-style dining, I thought the culinary slant might be a core competency of this Wisconsin based bar. I've yet to hit a quality meal there but will keep trying every once in a while.
As a nearby neighbor, and Chicago sports fan, I'm glad Kroll's is around. I wish the bar was smaller to bring some of the patrons and comradeship together. Though, I've never been there pre-Bears games, and can only assume its wild. But all-in-all, I'm glad Kroll's is around!
Oh, no no no no no. Kroll's, you really made me sad. This was definitely one of the worse bar experiences I've had in a long time. The service was absolutely horrid at the bar.
I arrived alone and had a drink and ordered an appetizer from the really awesome server at the bar just before her shift ended. She was great and really attentive.... then the shift change happened. The two servers that came in after her (a man and a woman) were just horrid servers. My friend literally sat for 20 minutes before she was even given a chance to order. Another friend had flagged down the male server TWICE and he said "I'll be there in a minute" and both times never came back. When he finally took their drink orders, he looked pissed - you know, as if serving people isn't his job or something. I know that you hate your job, sir, but don't get mad at customers when they're asking you to do what you're supposed to - SERVE DRINKS.
Once we left the bar, the service at the table wasn't really that great. Our server, Greg, seemed totally lost and wasn't even going to serve us at first because he wasn't even sure which tables were his and which ones weren't. I'm sorry, but that's not the best way to start off our evening at the table. He was definitely more attentive than the bartenders and a lot nicer once he realized we were in his section.
Honestly, the bad service really overshadowed everything else that was happening at the bar. The beer was good, but too expensive (even the Miller was like $3.50 or $4/pint). They had a decent selection of bottled beers but the one guy bartender just said "we have a lot" when we asked for a beer menu. Thanks, idiot. I know they had a ton, we just never got to see exactly what. The fried cheese curds were pretty good and I really wanted to try the tater tots, but I just didn't want to order and have to be sucked into more bad service for the evening.
It looks like Kroll's is going to become our after work hangout, though, so hopefully my next experience here is a lot better than the first. At least the bar stools were comfy.
Love this place. Great pizza. Awesome beer selection.
It's been hyped to me as amazing food - i'd give it just an ok. Kind of weird mix of people time I was there on a weekend.
I agree with other posters about the service. It is horrible.
The bartenders are bad and don't seem to know how to manage the bar. I can't tell you about the food, except the goat cheese toast, b/c our server brought it and NEVER returned (we saw him and tried to get him). I threw $7 on the table and left.
Avoid going for big college games (Mich/ND) games b/c they cannot seem to be able to manage the place.
During the winter, and summer, less frequently, my family and I get to go to Kroll's. The unique way the grill the hamburger buns and the way they treat the hamburger is a nice change of pace. Giant TVs all over the place for the kids to be entertained, and always good service.
It's just a few seconds across LSD from the Field Museum and the Aquarium. Beer selection is also very good.
I give this a star for the ambiance, and a star for the impressive beer menu. The food reminded me of Denny's. It was better presented than Denny's, but for the price, I just expected it to be of a bit better quality. The server was attentive and the food was prompt, but just not highly appetizing past the first few bites.
We had the Spinach Dip, and had to drown it in salt, pepper, and parmesan powder in order to make it slightly palatable. It tasted like bland cheese gravy with spinach bits.
My wife had a turkey burger, and as starving as she was, she left half of it on the plate. She loved the tater tots, she said they were awesome, but stated that the turkey burger was mediocre at best.
I had the tuna melt with a side salad. The salad was the bagged iceberg and cabbage blend that you'd buy at Jewel. The tuna melt was heavily toasted bread, with tuna salad, a thick tomato slice, and a melted Kraft cheese slice. It's not that the individual ingredients were bad, but they were put together in the same manner as one would expect from a freshman at a culinary arts school.
If you want to watch the game and have some drinks and bar food, then Kroll's is definitely your place! If you want a decent restaurant experience, I'd suggest a standard casual chain restaurant.
Reasons not to go to Krolls:
1. It's a Packers bar.
2. Poor beer selection.
3. Slow service.
4. Overpriced.
It's a neighborhood sports bar, with better than average bar food, and a fairly impressive beer menu.
Food is a little heavy, but tasty. Service is pretty on point the three or four times I've been there. I usually sit in the dining section, and the service in there has been fine. The bar is large, people here seem to dislike the service at the bar, but I have no complaints.
Great spot for a neighborhood spot, but I wouldn't necessarily urge someone to travel there from across town.
The beer menu is really the best feature.
(for the reviewer a couple spots down, I'm fairly certain that New Glarus is not sold anywhere in Illinois).
Shufflepuck.
The long table covered in sand by the back wall automatically makes this place awesome. $3 Negra Modelos and other drink specials on a recent Friday make it extra awesome. Bonus points for the comfortable leather-backed bar stools. Good place.
Being a small chain from Wisconsin that boasts their beer menu, I wish they offered New Glarus or more Point beer options. Anyone know where I can get me some Spotted Cow? yumm...
Back onto Kroll's, it's a laid back place. The menu has a lot of options, almost too hard to even decide! They have plenty of TVs in case yours is temporary down...and I noted the music playlist is current with my indie ears.
It's a bit dark, they really should pull the shades up! And they need a major revamp. The black leather and dark wood don't help to the darkness in there. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a basement. But then again, I'm usually always sitting in the back room, so maybe I just need to sit by the windows.
Overall, this place is average, nothing makes it stand out. But I obvs. would go back more often if they had a beer I'm craving.
don't expect good service. go there if you are desperate
I didnt drink much when I came, but I was still pretty impressed with their beer menu. They also had some pretty good specials.
The butter burgers are pretty good. and the cheese curds are amazing!
also, I really enjoyed their seating area. It was very relaxed and kinda lounge like - the smaller tables had these super comfortable leather chairs around them. I really want to go back here for after-work drinking with friends, it would be excellent for that.
Beer, glorious beer. Best consumed cold.
Kroll's South Loop has a solid beer menu that included some varities I'd never heard of before.
I probably never would've walked into this corner bar but since we were staying across the street, it worked out well.
I had a Two Brothers and a Michigan craft beer that nearly knocked me to the floor.
Can't comment on the food here since the kitchen was closed for the night.
Best of all, this is a White Sox bar.
Beware any bar menu with an extensive menu list of fancy schmancy beers with no prices listed for them...
Especially if when you ask what the prices are and the waitress doesn't know either...and says stuff like "they are probably between $7 and $12 or so"...
Especially especially if you can get all of those same beers at like Trader Joe's or World Market or whatnot...
Unless, of course, you like spending $30 on three beers, but that's really not my thing...
I mean, yeah, they tasted good and all, but two of them came in a fucking bottle. I'm think a stein or bucket or some shit is a way more appropriate vessel for that kind of money...I guess at those prices it's good that last call is at - midnight....(pumpkin style?)...
+1 star because they are a White Sox bar and that at least has the potential to make a man shut the hell up and be happy for a minute or so, so I'll give Kroll's that...
Maybe I had expectations, of food that hadn't seemed to come from a Warehouse freezer. Though this place is TWO blocks from my house--after one experience of food that was to die from, not for--I'd rather scrounge with my dog off the sidewalks. Don't bother.
I lived right next door to this place a year or two ago , before moving up a bit north in the same 'hood...i gota say i went a lot more when it was basically in my building - i don't think its worth the 4 block walk. The cheese curds are pretty tasty, but only if you really douse them with some ranch sauce. Otherwise, it's a pretty typical "nice" bar. The food is just alright, nothing special - in fact, the "famous" burgers are pretty bland, in my opinion. The service is good and there are some nice projection screens if you want to catch the game from a local spot.
I lived in the South Loop when I first moved to Chicago before finding my permanent home in Lakeview and I'm just gonna lay it all out for you in a few plain words; I don't like the south side of the city. At all. End of story. For those of you reading this that like that area then more power to you. Stay down there, more room for the rest of us up north. But I don't like the "feel" of the city from that angle, I don't like the aesthetics, and I don't much care for the people. Sadly, Krolls is the epitome of what I don't like about the south side.
At first glance it looks ok but once you walk in you're slammed in the face with the decibel level of a strange mesh of music, tv, and obnoxious 20-somethings that still think they're in college... and not in the good way.
Our server put in a good attempt at being friendly but honestly she seemed just as over it as we were after being there for ten minutes. We actually sat at a nice spot, large booth, plenty of room for the 5 of us and if it's one thing this place has it is space. And it could be a great space if done correctly. I just couldn't wrap my mind around what kind of atmosphere they were going for. They have this awesome exposed brick on the walls and comfortable furniture but it ended there. The booth we sat in had a layer of dust on the shelf behind us that actually ran the whole way down the line of booths. Umm, might be time to invest in a new overnight cleaning crew.
The food didn't get much better. We ordered a couple different kinds of beer that arrived in plastic cups. That's right, plastic. The kind of plastic cup one might get with a happy meal at McDonalds. To make matters worse, of the three different beers we ordered they all tasted like watered down Bud Light. Who is this place trying to kid?
The appetizer combo was ok but the poppers tasted like they were frozen and nuked in the microwave, the chips were strangely chewy instead of crunchy, and my burger was mediocre at best. We were sitting in the back half of the restaurant which is slightly less annoying than the front half with the bar. Apparently they wanted to close down the back half while we were still there so some guy kept coming by and trying to snatch our plates out from under us before we were even finished. Then a few minutes later they turned the lights on full blast in the back. Obviously they aren't in to subtle cues. Even the people next to us were making comments about how we felt like we were being pushed out and this place is supposed to be open until 2am! What gives?!
When the meal was over I would have made a mad dash for the train to get home faster if it weren't for the burger feeling like a brick in my stomach. The only thing Krolls did successfully was remind me why I love living on the north side.
I'm from Green Bay and a fannatical Green Bay Kroll's follower (East and West). So when I learned that Kroll's was coming to Chicago I was delighted. All I can say is I like it ... if this were any other place I would probably give it five stars. But truth be told, it is not quite to the standard of the Green Bay version. The food is just a slight step down, the prices are way higher (even when you account for location) and the atmosphere is waaaaay too slick and trendy. Of course, I give them a pass on all of this because they are serving an entirely different demographic in the South Loop of Chicago. I just miss the cigarette burns in the carpet, the autographs on the wall, the cheesy coat hooks at every table. That stuff probably wouldn't fly in the South Loop so I'll say three cheers to them for at least bringing the delicious menu here to Chicago. The menu is a bit different and just not quite as good but it would be tough to duplicate perfection.
I've been here twice now and its been a good experience both times. This place is great if you live nearby which I do.
I've gone with friends and relaxed. The place is very big and the music isn't too loud. There is a very wide selection of different beers so if you like experimenting with different beers this place is great. The drinks weren't overly priced. The decor was pretty nice, comfortable couches/seating.
There aren't too many options in the area, but if you don' have reason to be heading to the neighborhood I don't know that I'd recommend running over right away. This is a good bar to come relax and watch a game, yet only a decent restaurant to grab a burger in the South Loop.
It's a large space, but as I sat there and soaked up the atmopshere, the blending of the new lofty feel didn't really mix with some of the old-school decor that I'm sure they tried to create like their other Green Bay location. The low swivel armchairs were comfortable though.
The menus were all over the board. If you're going to a bar that is known for their burgers you expect bar food, but they had not one but 2 menus filled with an array of options...this is a clear indicator to me that not everything can be fresh or made in house. I was right. The cheese curds were probably McCain's frozen favorites (though good). I thought Wisconsin, wow I'd love their perch fish fry. Wrong. Very mediocre and not anything like my Wisconsin Friday favorite. The broccoli that came as my side can only be described as gross. I won't go into details. The mac and cheese was nothing to write home about. Onto the good - I enjoyed the spicy wings and the burger was tasty too (the fries on the side were not).
Bottom line for Kroll's? I'd come back if I were walking in the neighborhood and wanted a beer and burger, but that being said I think Kroll's is in the same category as a Bar Louie for me...
If you've been to Kroll's, it's probably because you know your options for sports bars in South Loop are few and far between. Knowing that, not only do I want to like Kroll's because of that, but I need to like it because of that. Unfortunately, I don't know, there's something going on here that doesn't sit well with me.
Could be the food. If you eat here, I would stick with the main menu and avoid the apps. I wouldn't go so far as to say that my body has gotten accustomed to eating fried foods, but their fried-apps are not good.
Other than that, though, it's not a completely terrible option, it's just that there's nothing else around to really compete. I'll still go here every once in awhile: the atmosphere is pretty good for a Bear's game although, being one of the closest bars to Soldier Field, I would certainly hope it would be. Still a little confused as to the whole Packers connection though. Oh well. No one's perfect.
How can you melt a pad of butter onto a burger and have it still suck? I thought things this bad for you were supposed to at least taste good. This tradition continues with bad desserts, until you finally run out of ways to hurt yourself, and you go home.
Kroll's servers remind me of postal workers, only worse because postal workers don't think they're hot, while the waitstaff here act a lot more unapproachable than they actually are. Unless, of course, you want to order, in that case they are totally unapproachable.
Did I mention it has a sports bar in front. Just what the South Loop needs! Thank Jesus! It seems like every restaurant here has a sports/football themed bar in it, except for the Thai place. If the Sports bar is the only thing keeping this place open, I wish they'd stop selling food.
I guess if I hung at Kroll's every night, I would be slathering all sorts of transfat and crap on my food to hasten sweet death to come and save me.
This is a great neighborhood place. Not sure I'd go out of my way to be here, but I love relaxing here now and then since I live nearby.
The best part about this place is the great beer selection. A few Leine's and other standards on tap, they always have a good "beer of the month" special, and they have around a hundred different bottled beers available at any moment.
I had the buffalo chicken sandwich as well, which was delicious, and the fries are great with it. The loungey chairs at the tables are a great plus too. Definitely a good place to come with some good friends.
This is somewhat of a sports bar, but decor has a classier feel to it (less the rednecks in the bar area). In the dining area that is separated from the bar area, there are booths and tables with very comfortable leather chairs. I ordered a Buffalo Chicken Wrap ($8.25). It was prepared very well, with actual buffalo chicken pieces (with light breading) instead of grilled chicken soaked in buffalo sauce. Very tasty. It also came with fries, and the fries tasted great. Usually bar fries are steak fries, but these were nearly identical in shape and taste to McDonald's fries (well from what I remember anyway since I haven't eaten there in a long time). The service was pretty good.

Dear Krolls,
Please add some healthy alternatives to your menu and start using better salad greens for your salads. Not all of us want a burger and onion rings for lunch or a salad made from iceberg lettuce mix.
Thank you,
EP
PS I do like your soups!
The original Kroll's is right by Lambeau field, so it's fitting that the Chicago sister branch is right by Soldier Field. I only know this because the girl who introduced me to Kroll's grew up not so far from the original. She said this one had a more modern feel, but still retained the family feel the original Kroll's had. The staff is very personable and happy.
There is a definite football appreciation feel to the place: plasma tvs galore and a comfortable atmosphere to watch a game on any one of said tvs.
But that's not why I come here: Truth is, sometimes I need cheesecurds. I'll usually have a cheeseburger & a beer to go with them. There is a good selection of beers to chose from. If I am in the mood for a thick burger, with every topping I'll go elsewhere. But for a simple buttery burger, the Kroll's burger makes me happy. But it's the fried cheesecurds that will call my name from across town.
This is a place that I make sure I ride my bike to so that I can make believe that I am offsetting the damage I am about inflict.
Kroll's is a big, clean and modern sports bar with multiple projection screens. The close proximity to Soldier Field guarantees a dominant male set! Though I didn't sample the food, everything that whizzed by us looked fantastic ('specially the nachos!). Kroll's rocks a huge beer menu, close to a hundred I believe, though the draught selection is a bit anemic. Our server was accommodating and his longish hair and neverending smile didn't hurt one bit.
Oh, and Kroll's, "Affliglem" is spelled "Affligem". Your copy editor missed that one on the menu.
I'm giving Kroll's 3 stars. If you plan to head here for food, I would suggest another restaurant. Even the standard burger isn't that great. However, I love having a bar like this in the South loop. This place really shines for Bear games. It gets crowded and is a fun place to be. Aside from that, they have a fairly large beer menu which is nice. I usually try a new option everytime I head there.
Overall, this place has a lot of tv's and is great for watching a game to get a beer, but stay away from the food.
We lived a block from Kroll's so in a pinch it was an okay place to go when you wanted to get out of the pad but didn't want to go too far. The food is just there; it's not good or bad, it's just bar food. The crowd was always confusing as it seemed that the majority of people who were there on any given night weren't actually from the neighborhood. I can't imagine anyone making a special trip just to go to Kroll's, but, maybe I know not of what I speak.
If you're in the South Loop and want average bar food at cheap prices, Kroll's is the place.
Stopped by here after Nike's "Human Race" event. Had trouble getting a cab after leaving Soldier's Field and was hungry after my 10K "run"!!
Would have been a 4 star if service wasn't so slow, but I suppose it isn't my waitresses fault - the restaurant didn't prepare for the Human Race crowd to show up all at once (or at all!).
Came in here and was impressed with their liquor selection. My friend Sarah is a big whiskey (?) fan and was really happy to find her favorite Bushmill selection on the menu.
I LOVED my salad - it was hearty, big and packed full of yummy goodness. My cobb salad has nice big chunks of ripe avocado, blue cheese, chicken was moist and juicy.
Sarah ordered the Taco salad and it looked amazing also.
Recommended if you're in the hood and need a place to get some food.
We had dinner here last night and it was so so. We had a group of 8 that arrived slightly segmented so our seating was a little odd. My boyfriend and I were the last to arrive and by that point there were two couples at a table for four, with another couple sitting nearby at the bar. Luckily a few people nearby left so we were able to pull up two seats to the table of 4. Even though we were in the aisle, there wasn't much foot traffic so we didn't get bumped.
Kroll's is a bar and grill with an emphasis on grill. It's definitely not a place to come and do shots with friends. The one issue I had was that for a place that seemed to be more of an eatery, they had a very limited menu. Our only options were appetizers, sandwiches, and pizza. The table split an order of Spinach dip and a trio dip platter of queso, salsa, and guacamole. I liked the spinach dip and a friend remarked that the guacamole was especially good. I cannot attest for this as I (I'm a freak!) cannot taste avocado. I ordered the Reuben and found it to be pretty average. I absolutely love Reubens so average didn't bother me too much. Others at the table found their burgers to be (I'm going for a theme) average as well.
Our group consisted of a good friend that lives near, his newly pregnant girlfriend - another friend that lives downstate, his new(er) wife, her sister, her sister's boyfriend, and my relatively new boyfriend that was meeting them all for the first time. We had a few people that knew each other well, but no one in the group knew everyone so It was nice to be able to converse over a few drinks without the loud music and crowds of a Saturday night bar. Despite the boring menu, it made for a nice laid back start (or restart as we had been out earlier in the day) to our night.
I lived in the South Loop for a year and for some stupid reason never came here (probably because it was all of a mile south of my place and I'm lazy). I'm still kicking myself in the *ss because I can't get that year of boozin' and eatin' back...especially on Tuesdays because apparently if you bring in mail with a 60605/60616 area code you get 20% off!! I'm just going to bring in my old bills...or steal my dad's. Denise, Dennis, same thing.
Kroll's may be owned by Packer fans, but they have nothing but Bears and Sox pride at this bar...plus I saw a Northwestern pennant!! Go U Northwestern!! (class of '06 shout out here). They have lots of TV's, a projection screen, really nice comfy seats that led to me lounging for 2 hours last night watching part of the All-Star game, an amazing beer list and great food. I had the beer-battered walleye and my dad had a butter burger. Both delish...and don't forget about that something special from Wisconsin - cheese curds!!!
The prices were reasonable too, especially for the overpriced neighborhood its in. They have lots of specials as well. It's also a block away from the 62 Archer bus, meaning I can stumble home fairly easily. I'll definitely be back.
I was really surprised to see some of the negative reviews about the food. If you do about 15 seconds worth of research you'd realize that the original Kroll's started in Green Bay, soooooo you can probably assume that you are not going to be able order a tofu burger topped with soy cheese... Instead, you can order lots and lots of things made with real Wisconsin cheese...!
I love this place because....
- The food is really good... Specifically the Prime Rib Sandwich, the loaded tator tots and the cheese curds.
- The carrot cake - seriously
- They literally have a hundred different types of beer.
- They have a ton of TVs and it is a great place to hang on football Saturdays and Sundays
- Some of the tables have big black leather chairs
Finally, they show... GASP!... White Sox games... Imagine that? A bar in the SOUTH LOOP showing a White Sox game... Oh the humanity
BTW- if you love Tater Tots- then this is the place to come. As an appetizer- you can get them smothered in cheese sauce, bacon and sour cream. Absolutely decadent and delicious!
Their food is consistently good. Try the broasted chicken with mashed potatoes. Just like they make at the original Krolls up in Green Bay. Or any one of their "Chicago style" burgers. The original ones are too thin for me but these are big, beefy and come with a variety of toppings.

The service here is terrible. In one instance, we received our food before our drinks, and another time my friend sat in gum in the dining room.
Food is meh. Salads are okay, mostly iceberg lettuce.
Order the cheese curds.
