Why is it that the absolute Best.Food.Ever. comes from some small place in your hometown? Well, Krekel's is that place. Most people haven't heard of Decatur, much less Krekel's. But, as Julie C. put it, "This small town chain has the best burnt smushed burgers in Illinois."
And by "burnt smushed burgers," we mean a nice brown crust on the edges. With cheese, remarkably, melting through the burger itself. Nice and salty, with enough grease to make Atkins proud.
I confess that I ate a Krekel's burger nearly every day that I could do so in high school. We were such regulars that we had to call ahead of time if we weren't coming, because they usually had our burgers waiting for us! (I won't comment on how many years ago that was though ...)
I would also like to point out that Krekel's was indirectly immortalized by Sufjan Stevens in the song "Decatur, Or, Round of Applause For Your Step Mother!" with the lyric: "Chickenmobile with your rooster tail. I had my fill and I know how bad it feels."
That's right, Mr. Krekel drove a friggin Chickenmobile!!! It had a gigantic rooster head attached to the roof. I swear there was something in the water in D-town ...
Krekel's!! mmmmm. Your lemon shakes rock my world, Krekel's. The hamburgers have crunchy edges and taste like heaven. My boyfriend and I paid a visit to Decatur this weekend, and I'm pretty sure we talked about Krekel's for a week leading up to the trip. It just doesn't get much better than this, folks.
OF COURSE you have to go to Krekel's when you are in Decatur! It is sine qua non of the Soy City culinary experience. Ultra thin burgers teetering on the verge of crispiness+crisscut fries+chocolate shake with real malt=an unsurpassed 'fast food' meal that you should not go more than a lunar month without!
This is the place to go in Decatur for the best burgers and ice cream.
I didn't give it 5 stars because they changed the fries a while ago, and darn it, there just not as good as when we used to fight over the fries. Now we don't even order them any more because they just get thrown away.
Krekles is a must every time my husband and I are in Decatur! It is part nostalgia, but I love their grease burgers (with bacon and all the fixings!) with the crispy edges and fries. The meat for the burgers is part of a special mix that you cannot find anywhere else. The chocolate shakes are soooo good! My husband can drink the large like it is water. I highly reccomend a visit if you are in the area.
