Love love love Krankie's.
To begin with, Krankie's is a wonderful place to sit out on the patio and work, talk with friends, listen to decent music, write a Yelp review, pretty much whatever. A decent patio tends to sell me on a place, so Krankie's does not disappoint in that way.
I've previously raved of their coffee when I reviewed the drive-thru on Reynolda, but I think it warrants a second raving. Fantastic coffee. I'm kind of obsessed with Railhead at the moment. Their baristas make some mean "fancy" drinks. Best of all, its an all-day kind of place since they also serve beer and wine. I pretty much love them for having Green Man ESB on draught.
This place really makes me wish that I lived downtown! -

This place is cool. I was here a few years ago and thought it was awesome. Cool atmosphere. Great coffee.

This place might be the coolest coffee joint I've ever been to. Super friendly and helpful staff. Fun vibe. Art gallery and music hall to boot. If I lived in Winston-Salem I would be here all the time. They serve wine and beer, something other coffee spots ought to get wise too.

I die for your uber-rich mochas, Krankies.
And the gallery in the back plus the coffee card (buy ten get one free) are big Bonuses! -

This was my second visit to this coffee shop and this experience was better than my first. They could tell I wasn't from around here and I think they were expecting me to make a big fuss (thanks to all the online reviews and food TV shows.haha). But i didn't and I think they were appreciative. I had the iced chai and it was perfectly sweetened. Normally I'm a coffee drinker, which is what I had the first time - and that was great too. Both times I bought a pound of coffee which was great as well.

What do you do when you're traveling and the cheap-ass wi-fi in your cheap-ass hotel is down and you have a few hours to kill? Bring your laptop down here and set up shop on the patio, and enjoy the sunshine while you catch up on e-mail, with great music (Misfits, The Clash, etc.) playing in the background. Perfect Sunday morning.
I always come here whenever I'm in the area, and have had a good experience most times. The baked goods are delicious (try the ginger cookies), and the coffee is either strong or rocket-fuel-strong, which is how I like it , and especially lends itself to a tasty iced coffee. Minus one star for often finding the parking lot full, and some of the douchey individuals hanging out around the counter and hitting on me (probably friends of the staff - whom, for the record, I've never had a problem with, except for their poor taste in friends). -

Based on the coffee/espresso/tea alone, Krankie's is stellar. Their espresso has crema, for crying out loud!
Their service, however, would be a -5/5... why, yes-- yes, that is a negative sign in front of the first 5. There must some kind of a-hole requirement to work here. And it spills over to some of the customers who feel like they have to act this way too.
"I'm so profound and busy being hip that I can't be bothered being courteous to another human being. It pains me to say, 'hello' or 'excuse me' when I bump into someone or to crack a smile.".
It's a shame, but it's okay because, tee hee, posers also make for great entertainment. -

Best coffee in NC, hands down and in winston salem, who knew?
Compares to Stumptown in Portland and Brooklyn
Try the railhead or ethiopian coffees french pressed, you won't regret it
If you are lucky, they will be playing the Smiths when you walk in. -

What can I say? As far as I can tell, Krankies is THE Hipster-Mecca of Winston-Salem. But what might come across as ennui-to-the-point-of-pretension in other towns, has not yet set in here.
Krankies definitely gets hipster AND hippie points for importing and roasting its own beans (which it claims are organic and fair trade), for serving local and imported beer and wine, for housing both a performance and gallery space for local artists, and for hosting a weekly farmers market across the street (now renamed the Cobblestone Farmers Market).
It gets customer points for having plentiful tables and seats (if you're into yard sale-scavenged shabby & eclectic, you're in luck), covered outdoor area, and free internet.
Points of interest:
- The Wherehouse can be rented out for private parties - my first ever trip to WS included a post-wedding reception after-party with open bar at none other than Krankies.
- One of Winston's always-interesting Art-O-Mats can be found here.
- The baristas are, in my experience, quite friendly and knowledgeable both about the coffees (ask them for recommendations) and the area. Oh, and if you talk to them and tip, they might even remember you next time, which is always a nice touch.
Overall, the coffee is good, the beer selection is good, the people are good, the space is good. It may not wow you more than every other coffeehouse you've ever been to, but there's not much to complain about here, and it's definitely unique enough to leave an impression. -

Ooo... a hipster cafe in WInston?
NOO WAYYYY... BUT YES! It does exist! Awesome stuff there. It was way too early when I went, but it reminds me of the Green Bean in Greensboro, but in a larger area with parking. And the place it absolutely fantastic.
Coffee is really good too. I'm just not awake enough in the morning to actually make an accurate assessment of what the usual environment is like. I assume it's just as posh as Green Bean though. lol. -

Coming to Winston-Salem from Austin, I was very worried about whether I'd be able to find a nice, independent coffee shop where I could go to get work done. Well, Krankie's definitely fits the bill and does the job. They have great drink selection, from coffee and espresso drinks to tea, beer and wine.
There's lots of space, so it's not too hard to find a place to sit and work. But because of all the open space, sometimes noise can become a factor (but it's not too bad).
The one thing that's frustrating, from my point of view, is that there are no "for here" cups and everything's in a disposable cup. This isn't a problem that's exclusive to Krankie's, as it seems like all the coffee shops here don't have re-useable cups. But that's a small price to pay and Krankie's is definitely one of my favorite places in Winston-Salem.Listed in: My Favorite Places in…

They serve the best soy latte I've ever had, and I'm a pretty picky vegan barrista. This was my favorite coffee and hang out spot while I was in Winston for the summer.

Love hanging out in Krankie's.. such a laid back vibe. Their coffee is great, staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. The only down side is that unless you have an air card, you are shut down after an hour of wifi. I've heard that you can ask for the password, I just never have. I sometimes will also get a bit of a headache on roasting days but really.. that's a small price to pay!

Rather the spill out the same mindless drivel i will get to why Krankies does not get 5 stars.
PAPER CUPS!
I cannot enjoy any coffee served at that location because it all comes in paper cups that ruin any complexity to the flavours of the coffee. Prepared properly the roast are fresh and taste excellent and on par with freshly roasted counter culture beans. Maybe they serve it in paper cups because trust fund hipsters cant be trusted with big people cups.
3 stars for price and quality of roast -

Krankies is about as unique a coffee shop you'll find wherever you may roam.
From what I've gathered, Krankie's obtained their property because a couple of the founders (?) squatted in the warehouse (then-abandoned) for 90+ days. North Carolina law states that if you live in an abandoned building for over 90 days without being evicted, the property is yours.
Whether or not the story is true, it's still a very interesting spot. The interior is very worn, much like, well, an abandoned warehouse. Very cool. And quite a large space at that, resulting in a spot to sit, sip coffee and surf the internet whenever you stop by.
The staff is exactly what you might expect: uber-alt. This isn't a bad thing, but Krankie's isn't breaking any indie-coffee stereotypes anytime soon. I do have to say, the employees are very friendly and laid-back.
Their coffee is probably the weakest part of Krankie's. They serve a solid cup, but they typically over-roast their beans, resulting in a burnt taste. It's not bad, seeing we've all been acclimated to Starbuck's 'death-to-the-bean' style of roasting - but I'd like them to turn the burners down a few notches.
A little side-note, Krankie's also serves beer and wine. -

I got a chai latte here that took FOR.EV.ER!!! Like I almost thought the barista forgot I was supposed to be getting said drink. Then it came and WHOA!! Starbucks who? This latte is THE BUSINESS! Absolutely worth the wait. I would wait longer. I don't even like coffee or coffee-like drinks that much but I could become an addict for this one! (Yes, I know it's tea.) Nice vibe. I also really liked that there was a guy JAMMIN on the piano and he sounded GREAT!

Having just moved to "the dash" from LA, my wife and I had our first downtown night-out here. We met up with some new friends (also transplants) to grab a drink. It was here that we also experienced our very first poetry slam. And it was pretty damn cool! Definitely some talented poets/writers/singers/performers. We didn't have any of their famed coffee, but the $2 Tecate beers won over my wife... A really nice vibe, with an eclectic group of people. The gallery is a nice surprise too. Will be back fo' sho.

Krankies saved my business trip to Winston-Salem! I wish I had time to drink more lattes from this great place. We stopped in here on the way into the office every morning and I savored a large latte each time. I also bought some beans to take back to San Francisco.
Their space is very cool and it seems like they are very connected to the local community artists and other cool local flavor.
Big love to Krankies! I only wish I had time to visit Camino bakery downstairs :) -

What the heck? A cool coffee shop in a performance venue/huge warehouse/farmer's market place downtown in WINSTON-SALEM? Cue the Twilight Zone theme, but it is true true true. An undiscovered gem, and now you have discovered it. Go see! A little slice of San Francisco in the heart of the Triad. . .great Alterno staff, great tea options, even beer and wine.

It took me a few years, but I'm now a fan. My initial reluctance was for several reasons. First, the seating isn't great. It isn't the most comfortable or clean, and a good bit of it is awkwardly in the middle of the "warehouse." That said, I'm a seat snob. Second, I had trouble figuring out Krankies' schedule. Some nights it's fairly quiet and conducive to getting work done, but other nights there's loud programming. And lastly, I have encountered what may be called "hippie-rudeness" or "bohemian snobbery." But then again, it is called "Krankies," right? These minor complaints aside, they have great coffee, which they roast themselves, and the "warehouse" has a nice bohemian feel. It is certainly the hangout of Winston's artistic community. And, you're sure to find some disaffected youth on the patio, smoking Parliaments. But it's okay; they don't bite.

PS211? The Werehouse? Despite the various names, Krankies is a venue for live music, artist performances, gallery showings, and oh, yes, it is also coffee house. Call it the cool kid hangout in Winston Salem, where those who despise Starbucks, but love coffee, gather for their daily fix. Certainly worth the occasional trip from Greensboro for artsy social activities. The folks behind this venue have many creative endeavors up their sleeves, and also promote weekly farmer's market, movie showings, and even yoga classes. This is the best example of what creative minds in a small town like WS can create with years of hard work. Every town should be so lucky.

Krankies has amazing coffee, interesting space, and great staff. There are three seating areas, so if you want to go with a friend and chat, sit quietly and read, or plug in and work away on your laptop, you'll probably find a good place for whatever you came to do. Fabulous place to spend a Sunday morning.

Wow. Very good coffee and great space, indoor and outdoor. Coffee was hot, fresh, and perfectly roasted. Just went this morning for the first time and will definitely be back. Five star potential, especially if they upgrade their breakfast fare (scone was fine). Also serve beer.

I love Krankies. It is probably some of the best coffee in Winston-Salem and their prices are not extremely high. The pumpkin bread is heaven on earth. The building is really fun and interesting and it is a very diverse group of customers. My friends and I meet up there at least once a week and we all love it! They also have a little art gallery, yoga classes sometimes, and concerts.

Fantastical! Everything I look for in a coffee shop. These people roast their own delicious beans, which I also serve in my home. Yes some of the kids are a little territorial but hey, just give a smile and be on your way. People in their late teens and early twenties are notoriously insecure and feel they have to act cool (read: never smile, smoke alot and you will find them on the patio) but bless their hearts most will outgrow it. A variety of folk may be found lounging about, most of them friendly.

My only regret is that we stopped by only on Krankies our last day in Winston Salem. I seriously wish I could have my morning coffee here every day. Good coffee, art, *and* a post industrial landscape. What more does a great coffee shop need? Oh yeah: a cute cat scamming crumbs on the patio. Check.

THANK GOD for Krankie's. I don't know what I'd do here otherwise. I love the space, the coffee, the porch, the drinks, the yoga, the art gallery, the films, the cabaret, the cute baristos/as. Please open up a Krankie's in Washington Park!

The blends are lovely, they serve wassail (wassail!) at the appropriate time, and Camino's aint bad either. If your up to it, grab an early cup on the patio (around 7am or so) and wait for the sunrise/freight trains to come in. *awesome*
