I've been going to Kra for two or three years. It's rather small and has a nice zen feeling to it. Chill ambiant music, minimalist but nice decorations... and their scalp massages are just ahhhhhh.....
I get my hair cut by Tanja who knows how to deal with my curly hair (though much to her chagrin I end up straightening it a lot).
Last week I had Tanja chop my hair. She was so excited to do so. I go through this every couple years where I grow my hair out and then realize I'm not styling it at all and life would be easier with shorter hair. So I brought in a bunch of pics and she cut it and it looked great. But I figured the true test would be could I make it look good on my own. Because of course everyone's hair -- hopefully -- looks good when they leave the salon. But what about when they try to style it themselves?
Turns out I've been able to keep up the salon look pretty well. And it doesn't take me hours. That I figure is the sign of a good stylist. And a good straightening iron.
I have been going to Karen for almost a year now. She gives unbelievable cuts! Karen really pays attention to detail and will notice if a single strand needs to be cut another millimeter more...I just got my hair cut this afternoon and when I looked on the floor, there were tons of teeny-tiny hairs that had been cut just a fraction of a centimeter!
She is definitely a stylist who values avant style and you will never get a boring cut. Karen loves texture and experimentation, so be prepared for something fun!
I always feel like Karen gives me her absolute attention...I usually spend at least 1.5-2 hours in the salon (just for a cut) because she is such a perfectionist and wants your hair to be just right.
Also, her cuts grow out beautifully...so maintenance (at least for short-haired me) is minimal. I'm so glad that I found her salon on Webster!

I've also been to many different salons. Karen, the owner of KRA, gave me the best cut ever. It's also a very good value! After a long, marvelous, shampoo/scalp massage, Karen spent a long time cutting each hair to get the overall shape right. You can tell that she is a artist and wants to make sure your hair flatters your face. Then she blew it dry and cut again to make it perfect. It looked great for months!
Kra is the best salon in the city I've ever been to. I normally don't take the time to write reviews when places are good, but see it as my goal to warn you from bad experiences :-) - but Kra is just so great, that I just could not keep it to myself. Karen is the sweetest lady ever, and she offers amazing service for affordable prices, which is very rare in San Francisco. I have been to a few hairdressers, and after a while my blonde highlighted hair turned more and more into an orange mess - and each time I had to spend money on that. I figured my hair is so damaged that I have to put up with it, but I was wrong. Karen did highlights and lowlights and my hair just looks so perfect again! She also did a great cut, so my hair even looks healthy. Karen used to work as a hairdresser in the fashion industry, so she really knows how to do hair but she believes in helping people and she enjoys actually what she is doing, so she does not charge a lot for her services - which is amazing. I also love that Karen is one of the few hairdressers I ever met who do what you tell them and let you decide what you like - however, if you need suggestion what fits to you she knows exactly what goes with your type and makes you look great. I am so glad I found this amazing hairdresser after so many disappointments in the city. And I am not the only one who likes her, when I went there two ladies from Santa Rosa were just leaving, they extra took a day off to go to Karen as a treat, because they love her so much.
I've been through 4 stylists in my short 2 years in SF...I'm super picky about my haircuts. Tanja rocks...she will take her time consulting with you before she touches your hair...her shampoo massage is an added bonus. Getting your hair cut by Tanja is a spa-like experience; she is very calm and not overly chatty, either. For color, I recommend Julia, but you have to book her in advance--she only works every other Sunday...
