A group of us went looking for Sushi and ended up at Koze.  Given the size of our group, we sat at the Teppan Yaki grill.  The cook , from Korea was extremely talented and entertaining, in fact one of the best I've seen.

I ordered Hamachi, Sake, a Rainbow Roll and Edamame.  The sushi was decent, but nothing special.  The roll was far too large and of so-so quality.

The women's bathroom was not clean and hot water handle was broken off.

The folks who ordered Teppan Yaki enjoyed their meals and seemed pretty happy with everything.

I would go back; but consider this to be an average restaurant.

The good:
Décor - I really liked the look in here.  It seemed like a good place for groups but cozy enough for a date, too.
Rolls -crispy salmon roll was die for!  911 roll, delish.  And because of the wait, we were given three pieces of a Playboy roll (why must sushi places always make sexual innuendos when naming their rolls).  I think this one may have been my favorite so I was kinda glad that we'd been forced to wait so long.
Prices - very reasonable prices on the entire menu, always a plus!
Ribs appetizer - get them!  They're divine!

The bad -
Noisy - it was really loud in here so it made it tough to hear one another.
And despite not being overly crowded, the wait was pretty long.  Maybe they were just short on staff.

The ugly -
Bathroom - I walked in and suddenly felt the need to do the running man in the stall.  Why?  Some crazy techno music was blaring in the bathroom.  I felt like I'd walked out of a restaurant and into a club.  Weird, right?  And they were pretty filthy, which was disappointing considering how nicely the actual restaurant was maintained.
Service - it took a bit for our food to come.  She spilled one of our soups and when my friend said he'd take it anyway, she said, "No" and took it back.  Our appetizers never came.  When we asked her about them, she told us she'd forgotten to order them -despite having written it on her note pad.

Despite those minor glitches I'd still go back, because when it comes down to it, there's no denying the call of good food.

Pronounced like Jose with a K,  its probably the best hibachi grill in el paso. It's clean, hip, and has great food. There are 2 sections of the restaurant so if you're going in for hibachi call in ahead to see if their is enough room or visa versa. When you're sitting in the "restaurant" part of Koze you're not missing out, especially if you order the calamari that delivers the longest pieces of squid you've ever seen fried or a sushi roll such as the 911 roll which is an ode to spicy tuna. This place caters to the edgy with a sushi bar including beer and wine and of course what self respecting sushi joint wouldn't have saki. But don't be scared to bring kids the hibachi grill entertains the whole crowd whether the young or old.

I was fortunate to find this authentic Japanese restaurant in El Paso. As soon as I entered the door, I couldn't help but be drawn in by the pleasant industrial, east-meets-west contemporary Japanese decor. The lighting was the typical dim found in most Japanese restaurants, but the upbeat music made it more hip and a bit Izakaya-ish to cater to the young "Miners" of this college part of town.  The sushi bar is the foremost feature to greet arrivals with an array of popular sushi.  The sushi prepared is done beautifully - the real Japanese way, so take heed... it's not the typical Japanese restaurant run by wannabes capitalizing on Japanese cuisine.  One can witness the careful attention to detail and all the thought of putting this restaurant operation together.  Dining areas are sectioned off by wood dividers and glass windows, which allows you to view the surroundings and also minimize some ambient noise. The teppan grillers are very skilled spatulateers with their rhythmic click clacks are sure to amaze and entertain guests.  I ordered the soft shell crab, presented with a medley of batter-fried sweet potato strips and green onions. The flavor was amazing - lightly seasoned with some chives and chili powder... reflecting the local TexMex culture. I also tried the New York steak with shiitake mushrooms. It was done just the way I like it - medium well.  The green tea was amazing. Very smooth, very authentic - I haven't had genmaicha (green tea with roasted rice) in a long time and it really brought me back to my years as a student in Japan.  As a connoissieur of Japanese food, I couldn't help but pay careful attention to the tea.  It is only served by the waitresses, following a sense of a cultural tradition that has its roots not only in Japan, but in England as well.  It has nothing to do with being subservient, but rather the notion that women are more representative of hospitality and grace.  The amae ebi (sweet freshwater shrimp) to my surprise, was really generous in size and proportion to how I had experienced it in Japan - perhaps to add to the old saying - everything is bigger in Texas!  Don was my waiter.  He was very knowledgeable of the food and culture and was very attentive to my requests and inquiries from start to finish.  Even the way he placed the check on my table was reminiscent of the same respect customers received in restaurants in Japan.  This restaurant  had only been open for four days at the time of my critique and I know that this is a type of restaurant that will surely become a local favorite.  Koze is very attentive to their patrons and will only get better in the months to come.  They didn't have any toro sushi ( what I call the prime rib of all sushi which I gladly paid seven dollars for two pieces in Japan ), but I look forward to it in the future.  This restaurant exemplifies Japanese cuisine while satisfying local palates with their dual-cultured menu. Gochisosama deshita!  I recommend other Japanese restaurants in El Paso to come visit Koze - to watch and learn.  If you'd like to find out more, please call Koze Restaurant at (915) 584-1128.
