Yummy... a bit of boston in NY... This place completely reminds me of one of my favorite sushi places in Boston that I would frequent quite often.  It's fresh, cozy and authentic.  The sake comes warm and yummy, the rolls are interesting without going overboard and you can even customize some of the rolls which is what we did, substituting snow crab for crab stick in the alaskan roll i believe it was. The prices are more than fair for the freshness of the sushi you're getting.  It was very cozy and fun.

Began the meal with some negitaki beef or something like that which was rolled beef with scallions in the middle... the beef was a bit on the tough side and I think I would have enjoyed the beef tataki more so next time I'll go for that.  Then the classic shrimp shumai steamed of course. YUM! I love my steamed shumai!  next were the rolls... we got the no name roll - so delicious and it came with tempura flakes! the alaskan roll but with snow crab instead of crab stick which was also a fave and two classics, the philadelphia roll and the salmon avo and cuke roll.  It filled us up plenty and we had hot sake on the side.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and if it hadn't been for the guy I was with I would have never realized the place existed! now I know I'll be spending more time there! check it out if you love sushi!

I eat at Kotobuki about once a week.  It's not the best sushi I've every had or even close to it.  However, it is good, always fresh, and fairly traditional.  I like the nigiri sushi here more than rolls or sashimi, though nothing is bad.  There are some very authentic and hard to find appetizers on the menu such as yamaimo (mountain yam) with maguro that appeal to serious lovers of japanese food and not many others.  I applaud that.

Overall, this is probably the best sushi in Stamford, though it's not really at the level of better places in nearby NYC.

FRESH OF THE BOAT

No, not me...the hamachi.

After so many lackluster dining experiences in Stamford, I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness and authenticity of the food at Kotobuki.  They have traditional Japanese fare from sukiyaku to katsu don to sushi.

I started out with the unaju which was terrific.  Large pieces of eel, lacquered in a sweet sauce, and layered on top of warm rice.  Perfect.
The sushi was also surprisingly good.  The hamachi was among the freshest I've ever had and the toro was very reasonable at $5 a piece.

The only negatives were the California roll which is made with fake crab and the salmon skin roll which was a bit gummy and fishy.  Other than that, it was a great meal.

If only I had tried this place when I lived here!

I'm not a huge sushi connoisseur, but I know what I like.  Kotobuki doesn't rank up there with Blue Ribbon Sushi, Bond Street or Morimoto for me, but it's good.  The fish was fresh in my spicy tuna roll and my avocado salad was good.  Overall it was better than average, but not mind blowing.  I'll keep it on my radar for those nights where I'm craving takeout sushi.

Great food, great service. Who could ask for more? I went here all by my lonesome and sat at the sushi bar -- the chefs were friendly and very helpful, and my server was quite attentive. The fish was fresh and delicious.

Tip: Make sure to ask for ALL the specials, not just the sushi roll specials they hand you on a menu when you walk in. Behind the sushi bar, on the left, there is a small white board with some really unique dishes that I didn't notice until too late -- think fish liver pate, yellowtail collar, horse mackerel, homemade red bean ice cream, etc.

I would definitely go here again, only next time I'll bring more people so I could try more things!

Have lived in Stamford for several years now and regrettably I have to say that Kotobuki is no longer the best in town. Those honors go to either Fin II or to Republic Grill.  I am not saying the fish is not fresh at Kotobuki. It is fresh and prices are reasonable but the special rolls do not compare to those found at Fin II or Republic Grill.  The pieces and rolls are large so you get decent portions but I just not as enthusiastic as I used to be on this place.  Great free parking which is a huge plus for Stamford.  If you want service with a smile, they are all very friendly here and as stated you will enjoy just no longer on my A list.  Overall: 8.5/10.

Sushi Senin in Manhattan is my baseline for amazing, off the hook sushi - albeit for big dollars. Lunch can cost #200 easy.

At Kotobuki, you get amazing sushi for a small fraction of the cost, with easy-going local ambiance. Anyone is made to feel comfy, even shrieking babies (ugh). I'd eat here anytime given the choice and used to have lunch here at least once a week and always ordered the "sushi C with an eel handroll".

As good as it gets, by any standard. Count me a fan

I live in NYC and often visit the best sushi restaurants: tomoe, matsuri, bond street... when visiting family in Stamford I was apprehensive about going out for sushi, however, i was pleasantly surprised that the sushi was fresh and tasty at Katobuki.  Will def go back next time I visit stamford.

I was visiting one of my best friends down in Stamford this weekend and he took me here on Saturday night.

I thought that I'd had amazing sushi before, but heck, after eating here, I feel like every other place I've eaten should have a set of golden arches outside.

The fish here was absolutely amazing.  Fresh, wonderful melt-in-your-mouth texture and great flavors.  Just for fun we ate both wild alaskan salmon and regular salmon to do a direct comparison and wow, you'd be shocked how much the farm raised pales.

The other thing that takes this place over the top is their sauces.  Previously, it was rare for me to find a sushi place that ventured too far away from "spicy mayo" sauce.  This place does amazing things using only soy sauce, vinegar, and a few other choice ingrediants.  Forget the spicy mayo, and toss that wasabi out the window, good sauces make this place a cut above the rest.

If you go it's fun to sit at the bar: you can chat with the 3 sushi chefs, all of whom always stand in the same order and the middle one is also the owner; pretty cool.

I probably won't eat sushi again until I have time for the 3ish hr drive down here.

Left if up to the rental car GPS looking for "Japanese food" and this is where I ended up.  I have to say, my expectations were blown away, though I guess it helped that they were pretty low to begin with!

. . . as for the food, the edamame was HOT, right from the steamer, covered with just the right amount of kosher salt.  There's nothing worse than overcooked, undersalted, cold and mushy edamame . . . luckily none of that here!  The beef tataki appetizer was expertly prepared, and a healthy portion to boot.  The other cool thing was that they actually asked if we wanted our spicy tuna made with a soy sauce or mayo base.  Gobs of mayo in my sushi kinda gross me out, so we went with the soy sauce and once again were happy with our decision.  For the main course, I went with the sukiyaki (since it was 10degrees outside!!) which was excellent, almost as good as grandma used to make, but seriously, who can beat grandma?  Best stuff for a cold winter night!! My only small complaint was that there was just one lone shiitake in the whole thing!  But after the rest of the meal I was definitely willing to let that one go.
