Sometimes after years of perfect kielbasa, ham, and memories you take things in life for granted.  I planned out tomorrow for one of my twice yearly trips down to Kopytko.  It's a tradition I carried on from my Grandpa after he passed away.  As a child him and I would head down to Kopytko and load up on Christmas and Easter goods. No matter what, the nice people behind the counter would always give me a sausage or two to tied me over while my grandpa ordered his ham.

It was only today that I found out Kopytko closed. After 44 years. Thank you Kopytko for all those memories. I'll be telling people about you for the rest of my life.

Wow! Wow! Wow! A thousand times Wow!
I past this place on a Sunday several months ago and on the way back from Eastern Market today I stopped. I'm almost not wanting to write a review as I want this for place for my own.
I felt like I walked into a movie filmed in the UP where the store owners had been married for 40 years and I was waiting for Sandra Bullock on a country side road.

This place is small and homey, which won me over quickly. As soon as I said "just looking" the guy yelled to his wife "What are you doing? Get the boy a slice of sausage"-Priceless! Fresh made, hanging from the wall, smoked sausage. It was rich and creamy and salty and I bought immediately. I saw blood sausage lying around, which is a favorite of mine, and I asked about it and it had just been made-Once again bought immediately. I didn't want to leave and the husband and wife were all too eager to tell me about everything they had made and I was too happy to listen and buy. Fresh Perogies, Smoke Sausage, Smoked Fish, Pork Loin, sour flower soup, Bacon, and Homemade Headcheese (Hell Yeah!). He did say that he bought the smoked fish from Up North but come on now-if you have to outsource smoked fish, let it be Northern Michigan.

A friend of his started delivering Rye bread to the store recently and they insisted I try that...once again great! There is something to be said about local pride and this place portrays this to the fullest extent. I asked him how he prepares his blood sausage to eat and when I got home I did it just the way he suggested and couldn't have been happier. What a wonderful place. I'm glad to see local places making products like this.

"Artisanal," locally made foods are very popular these days, and with good reason. They are generally made with extra care locally. This is what Kopytko has been doing for years. They were artisanal before artisanal was cool.

The second-generation owners have kept daddy Kopytko's sausage recipes intact. It's an Easter ritual for my family to have some of the extra-special smoked sausage, the smell of which is a Polish aphrodisiac. They have also included a wider variety of smoked fish, including the rich and unctuous smoked Sable.

Going there before any major holiday generally includes waiting in a line that curls into itself like a fresh kielbasa. It's fine, you get the chance to meet other Kopytko afficianados, some of whom have traveled many miles to get there. Take the time to look at the other Eastern European specialties on the shelf, like pickled veggies, specialty chocolates, powdered soup mixes (the mushroom is great for cooking with), and dried Boletus mushrooms. One whiff of those and I'm in  heaven!

The shop itself, with its weathered oak and white tile walls, is a gem of old Detroit/Hamtramck. If you're stopping through on a weekday, take advantage of their cooked lunches!

This is a specialty meat market mind you....known for the best and most uniquely spiced smoked kielbasa on the planet.

The pierogies are melt in your mouth delicious. Now they have some prepared and some sitting in the display cooler ready to be taken home with you. Add some butter and onion and pan fry. Actually don't take my recipe for it, the older woman behind the counter will tell you herself what to do with it!

They deli man was also nice. He wanted to make sure I went home with a mouthful of something good and instructions for making sure the sausage and pierogies would keep well. Don't worry, I got it covered!

The kielbasa and mustard didn't last but two days at my house.  Excellent.

This place is very uninviting.  Dingy, messy -- needs a complete update and some new lighting and cleaning.

We got some hunters sausage and it was great.  I will give them that.  But you don't know what they offer.  I felt like I was raiding someone's fridge at home, hoping to find something I liked.

Needs an overhaul, but if the taste of their hunters sausage shows what  they can do, then I really think they should take the time to invest!
