My friends have brought me here every time I come to town (I'm their excuse, they tell me...) Burgers & onion rings are awesome.
We stopped in late evening last night to get our dessert. The turtle sundae was excellent, but was so much, I couldn't finish it. My friend can't not have the chocolate custard when she goes.
They are also really good about giving out samples - so if you are unsure about committing to the flavor of the day, make sure to ask for a taste!
Best wedding hangover meal ever! After waking up super late the day after our wedding, my new husband and I were starving. No amount of leftover cake or donuts would do the trick. We needed food, real delicious food. Lucky for us, Kopp's is up the street from our wedding reception venue!
We entered at a downtime when we could order quickly before it got packed with parents returning from kids sporting events and other hungry revelers. I love Kopp's for the stainless countertops and starch white uniforms worn by employees. Kopp's keeps the soda jerk and fountain vibe alive and thriving.
Both of us ordered cheeseburgers and shared a massive order of onion rings. After a small wait, we got our delicious, meaty loot. Before indulging in the hamburgers, we feasted on the onion rings. Kopp's onion rings are perfection! They're crisp and lightly salted. They gave me that fried goodness I've missed for so long working towards being a buff bride. The cheeseburgers were divine. Every bite of that big round disc oozed with meaty goodness.
Our post wedding/second shared meal as a married couple at Kopp's brought both into a happy food coma as we ate and stared at our wedding rings and looked lovingly onto each other as newly minted spouses. I thank Kopp's for making our second meal as a married couple so memorable, delicious, and filled with fried goodness.
I only had custard here and it was the best custard of my life. Absolutely unbelievable. This is the real deal.
Why did it only gett 4 stars? because the order takers I dealt with were obnoxiously rude.
No brainer; A Milwaukee landmark.
Some of the best (2nd only to Sobelman's in my opinion) burgers in town and definitely the best custard in town. Don't expect to eat there though, seating is extremely limited. Cheeseburger, Fries, and an Oreo Shake makes for an extremely guilty pleasure.
Oh wow. So great. Their flavors change daily. We would plan trips specifically for the custard. Yum!
Any day, anytime.
The burgers are buttery goodness; and the custard will complete your coronary blockage.
Make sure you've paid your health insurance premiums. Delish.
I am a 100% California girl, which means that I love my frozen yogurt and I will stand by my frozen yogurt until hell freezes over, and since it's freezing, I would still be able to eat my fro-yo. HOWEVER, visiting Wisconsin for two weeks and eating at Kopp's more times than I wish to reveal here, really made me rethink this whole fro-yo thing for a second. Okay, only for a second, but I still think Kopp's makes one of the best frozen products in the country! The flavors are unique and rich and the servings are cheap and generous, to say the least! I loved the mint chip, the raspberry swirl, cherry amaretto cheesecake, and all the chocolate flavors rocked my world. While an all custard diet might be less healthy than an all fro-yo diet, if I had to eat one thing for the rest of my life, I might settle down in the suburbs of Milwaukee for good.
***Oh, and the buffalo chicken sandwich with spicy celery was AMAZING!
Two words: Silky, Smooth.
I came here with my girlfriend late one night when we were visiting Milwaukee. The burgers were simple, greasy, and great.
Sure, it seemed like it was the hot spot to be at if you were high-schooler on a weekend night, but the burgers were very good.
Great custard and fast service a must go place. One of the best I have had in the area.
Kopp's is yummy. They always have such fun flavors. Most people in Milwaukee have the Kopp's calendar on their fridge, so they know which days will have their favorite flavors. The burgers are good too.
I like to go here in the middle of winter, because it's always nice and sunny inside. It's a Milwaukee tradition-I make sure to get here whenever I visit.
What can I say about Kopps that hasn't been already been said: excellent burgers and custard. My personal favorite things to order are their grilled chicken sandwich with onion rings. Just make sure you have a cardiologist on hand when you're done Its jam packed on the weekends, you can buy a pint of the custard for $3.29 to go. It's worth it. Bon Appetit. Yelpers;)
Is there an option for 10 stars?
I feel silly even writing this review because:
a.) None of the people I know outside of my family will probably ever visit this custard joint because we all live south of Wisconsin...though that is a DAMN shame,
and
2.) No words can describe the magnificent deliciousness that is this frozen custard
but I can try.
delectible
silky
creamy to the point of pure heaven
thick
lucious
mouth-watering
Epitome of all frozen custard.
One of the places that defines Wisconsin to me. Fatty fried foods, huge portions, custard... the service style is awesome too.
We seriously need a Kopps out here in Arizona so that people can finally realize what they've been missing out on by wasting their time with ice cream! Custard is AMAZING! And don't get me started on the burgers. Sooooo goooooood.
There's not much to say about Kopps other than go there!!
Custard and fantastic burgers.
People had told me about Kopp's and I honestly wondered how good can custard be? What had to be so good that people rave about Kopps? I have a favorite custard place (Custard Cup in Champaign, IL), and I go out of the way to get it when I'm in Champaign. However, I will now say that Kopp's tops it.
Oh... my... gosh... Kopp's is to-die-for. Now that I had it once, I think I'm addicted. The custard is so creamy and their flavors are awesome. The fact that they don't have all flavors all the time makes me crave my favorites even more!
Done reviewing... now I need some Kopp's!
nothing beats kopps custard.
...i keep trying to elaborate on this, but nothing does the incredible perfection justice. it just is.
the burgers are worthy, too. especially with cheese.
...seriously. i've got nothing. i usually put together reviews that give you useful information about service and selection, etc etc. kopps renders me speechless.
and that's saying something.
I LOVE YOU KOPPS! I wish we had one in San Diego!
Burgers are so stinkin' good! They are huge, very fresh, and just taste amazing. I prefer the fries of the rings, but both are good. Shakes are to die for. And the custard is just something else.
This is the first place I want to go and eat at when I visit Milwaukee. I suggest a basic cheeseburger without all of the fixin's because it just gets way to sloppy (which isn't a bad thing necessarily). You will not regret coming here. Oh! and the service is so quick!
Marwan doesn't lie.
if i could give kopps 6 stars i would.
they're open until 11p nightly, and have the best custard in the country! even oprah says so!
flavors you must try:
~pretzels and beer - sprecher root beer custard with white choc. covered pretzels
~maple syrup and pancakes - maple syrup custard with pancake pieces. it'd be better w/o the pancake chunks i think, but the maple syrup makes it totally worthwhile
~tiramisu - nuff said
~grasshopper fudge - would only be better w/alcohol
even just the plain chocolate or vanilla are a good way to go, and though i'm usually a cone kinda girl, i always get the custard in a dish cuz it comes with the tastiest cookie-cracker i've ever had. good rootbeer floats, good greasy food, and if i really want to splurge, too, i'll get a choc malt with fries to dip inside.
PLUS, a couple years ago, kopps decided to start featuring not one, but TWO flavors of the day (even though the sign from the freeway only highlights one). thank goodness i moved away from milwaukee before that happened or i would've gained like 10 ice-cream-tummy-pounds! if you're smart, you'll check out the kopps flavor forecast (http://www.kopps.com) to make sure you don't miss out on your favorites, but i wish they published them months in advance so i could schedule my flight home just to have some pretzels and beer...
It's Milwaukee's answer to a North Side/South Side rivalry.
I maintain that LEON'S is the supreme custard in the land. Kopps is a close second, for sure. Kopps has more flavors - indeed a flavor of the day. Leon's kicks it oldskool and sticks to the basics done right.
What Kopps does do right is the artery clogging Butter Burger. Sewer lid size, juicy and delicious - it's the burger I'll drive 90 miles for. It's that good. But then I'd get my custart at Leon's on the way back to Chicago.
The food in itself is over rated. Sobleman's has the better burger. The service and cleanliness is the saving grace.
Of their three locations, this is the one most associate as being the original and or label it the Milwaukee location. As long as Kopps custard and burgers are served I can eat it anywhere. This location gets busy at any time and parking can be a headache. People come and stay for a long while and since they don't have drive thru you have to park, get and go. There isn't any seating inside, a few high tables without chairs. Outside in two areas the front and rear, you can find three layers of steps where people will gravitate to and sit and enjoy their treats. In colder seasons you won't find people sharing these steps, rather they'll eat in their cars. Warm times, every space of each step is packed. It's kind of nice really, imagine any time you have a meal anywhere; typically we're separated from one another because as Americans we like our space.
So the other day me and broil stopped through for some custard. I missed lunch and thought.. well, maybe I could combine the two meals and try to devour a double cheeseburger (everything), a coke and a cup of Chocolate frozen custard. Broil did almost the same but got Chocolate almond and a single cheeseburger with coke. Wow, the both of us were out of it. Still had that drive back home to Chicago, I was dozing. Luckily the beer baby and the hunger baby got along well. Too much richness, but what a great time spent enjoying the experience with good company and great fare.
Anyone know what's up with the row of white cows in the rear? Would be nice if there was a sign with a reason.
I had their Red Raspberry on a cone - full chunks of (unfrozen) whole raspberries throughout - the custard itself was quite nice. A nice treat. Jam-packed on the weekends.

Forget about their grill menu. It is just decent; I still think the butter burgers over at Culver's… Read more »
Kopp's is a Milwaukee tradition. An indulgent tradition to be sure.
If ice cream isn't caloric or fat enough- Kopp's serves frozen custard. What makes it custard? About 14% butterfat which is what gives it it's amazing "mouthfeel" as it slides over your tongue and down your throat.. All of it's shakes, malts, cones etc are made with this amazing stuff. As a native Detroit-er- I had never heard of frozen custard til I got transferred to Milwaukee. And now- my hips will never be the same!
While there is always chocolate and vanilla- they also have two flavors that change out daily. People in Milwaukee actually keep a schedule so that they know when their favorite flavor is coming out.. You can get it off their website, drive down the freeway and see it posted on their billboard or swing by one of their locations. For my friends- that's vanilla with macadamia nut which is always on an "off" day like a Tuesday to help drive sales on a slower sales day. Weekends usually have a less popular flavor.
Prices aren't cheap. One scoop is about $2 but you can 2 scoops for $2.69! What a steal! Hmm- I wonder what that costs per calorie? Oh never mind- this is one of those places where you just have to put that out of your mind.
With only 3 locations in the Milwaukee area- locals line up to get their custard fix no matter what the season.
Now that I am living in Chicago and have gone through Frozen Custard withdrawal- I still get a little fix whenever I am in the area just to remind me of why I get up and go to the gym every day. It's to work off all the Kopp's I ate over the years while living in the "Dairy state."
You just can't go wrong with Kopp's. I grew up in Milwaukee but no longer live there, so everytime I'm back in the city I just HAVE to make a stop at Kopp's! My mom keeps their website as one of her favorites so she can check on the flavor of the day, well, every day haha.
Cheeseburgers are sooo good; I think it's the cheese that makes the burger. I don't know what makes it any different than other cheese, but it's just so good. So good. After a burger, and usually some onion rings, it's hard to find room for custard. But where there's a will there's a way. As hard as it may be, I like to split a burger with someone else just to make sure I can enjoy dessert as much as possible!
5 stars. Obviously. I'm sure anyone in Milwaukee would agree.
Milwaukee is not known for being the most health conscious city in America. Take for instance our obsessions with cased meats, cheese curds and beer.
Well, our love of custard is another one of those examples. We take something that is already unhealthy (ice cream) and then make it worse (more butterfat). This attitude is why I love this city and why I love Kopps... the best custard in town!!!
The custard at Kopp's is so delicious and my favorite part of the experience is picking up the monthly menu so you can plan out your next visit. I'm boring and am partial to the mint chocolate chip days, but they have tons of other wild flavors.
The only thing I am not a fan of is how crowded the place is! No matter how many times I have been there, it always takes me a moment or two to gather myself and jump in line. Who cares though... it's worth it!
It's miles better than ice cream. It's probably better than any other frozen custard in existence.
Could Kopp's custard be the tastiest frozen dairy product the world has ever known?
Leon's makes a very legitimate claim, but my answer is "yes."
Go to their website and register for flavor alerts. I live in Chicago but will find a way to get up there when that Dulce de Leche alert drops into my inbox. Oh, we're going.
And their burgers are also very good. Solly's nearby might be better (though not for your health), but you're going to Kopp's for the custard, so the good burger is just an added bonus.
I love visiting my family up in Milwaukee, but getting a Kopp's cheeseburger and chocolate malt (extra-thick) is just about as good a reason to go there.
Kopp's, allegedly the inspiration for the Happy Day's TV show hangout, is a great spot to get a cheeseburger (or a double) with the works, and indulge yourself in frozen custard. Froyo freaks, this is not for you - it is actually WORSE for you than ice cream! By worse, I do of course mean much BETTER, btw. The shakes, malts, and scoops, and sundaes are all awesome, thick, and unusually satisfying. Butterfat, anyone?
I have eaten here for years (many), and went altogether way too often with my friends back in high school. Now every time I go back, even at Thanksgiving, I have to get my Kopp's fix. I wonder if they would beat In-and-out burger if they were in California. I bet they would.
Darned good burgers and custard. Chicagoans, drive on up if you have the time. The burgers are wonderfully delish and the custard creamy. There aren't any places to sit, so be ready to stand, sit outside, or eat in the car. out of the many custard flavors, the coffee and strawberry are our favorites.
The grandaddy of all butter burgers in the Milwaukee area!! Well, maybe not the grandaddy - that would be Solley's Grille just down the road. But Kopp's butter burgers are an act of divine intervention and their custards will make you think twice about every ordering regular "ice cream" again.
Stopped here on a whim, just wanting to try something new. There were many pros, including huge size of the burgers, the awesome fries and of course, the custard (Sprecher root beer float, yum....) I think I'll be back on chocolate peanut butter chocolate day, fo sho!
I felt kind of frazzled when trying to figure out my order. I couldn't see the menu board (due to Christmas decorations) without being close enough to the counter for the cashiers to think I was ready to order. My pretty ordinary order took a little longer than I would have expected, but I'll take the wait for the good food.
My only real complaint is that the mustard at Kopp's is a spicy brown kind, not the regular yellow that I expected and wanted. After some quick bun scraping, lesson learned for next time.
YUM! Kopps custard is out of this world.
The only thing that I do NOT like are their french fries. But everything else...BRING IT ON!
All I can say is that I have moved away from the Milwaukee area for over 5 years now and every time I come back to visit, I MUST make a stop at Kopp's everytime I pass by it!!!
I have been going to Kopp's for custard, burgers, onion rings, filet of fish, you name it, since I was a child. Family outings to Kopp's happened almost every Sunday.
My favorite custard is still the Chocolate Chocolate Chip, hands down....or maybe the Butter Pecan....or Mint Chip....crap, everything is good!!! Can't get enough of Kopp's!!!
Probably one of the reasons Wisconsin is so overweight! It's soo good! I love their location and atmosphere. The food is awesome. I always get a burger with bacon on it and they come large and very greasy! GOOD THOUGH! Of course one of the biggest reasons to go there is for their frozen custard. It pretty good. I am not much of an ice-cream guy but this place gives me cravings from time to time. Need to check it out!
Good lord is Kopp's amazing. The shakes will make you believe in God. There is not a single thing on the menu that isn't delicious and well-priced.
I never had custard till I visited Kopp's back in 1995 while returning from a vacation. After trying Burgundy Cherry - the flavor of the day - I was in love with the creamy smooth texture and softness no ice cream can match. Now, whenever I'm in Milwaukee or the nearby area, I stop at one of the 3 locations closest to my route.
Kopp's has a plain black exterior that seems almost uninviting with the bold stencil letters on the sign. Their parking lot is usually near full, and a wide open outdoor space is full of happy custard munchers.
Go inside and you will find the service is pretty quick and the custard is coming out of the machines and getting scooped up as fast as it flows. Workers in white uniforms with white caps prepare the cones, bowls and sundaes. You can see the sparkling clean stainless steel ice cream machinery churning out the stuff all day long. Makes you feel good about being there.
I never had their burgers or other offerings, but I'm addicted to their custard. They have a nice web site with monthly flavor lists so I even plan trips to Wisconsin around the custard flavor sometimes. Whether we leave on a Friday afternoon or a Saturday morning could be decided by the flavor that day.
Kopp's now usually has 2 flavors for each day, which is more likely to appeal to more people. Forever I will love Burgundy Cherry, as it was my first custard. However, Red Raspberry, Grasshopper Fudge, and Orange Dream are my other faves. And there is nothing wrong with plain old vanilla either.
Best in the Midwest? Bold proclamation by Ian G. that I can't confirm personally, but I will say it's the best in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan's UP from what I have seen. And certainly better than Culver's.
The fries must be salted with some sort of highly addictive substance because I just can't get enough of them.
I have to consciously avoid coming to Kopp's because if I didn't, I think I'd end up eating it 3-4 times a week and not live very long.
Best frozen custard in the Midwest
I am from a state that has no frozen custard of its own (quel horreur!) so when I am in the Custard Belt I make it a point to go out of my way to try as much as I can. And Kopp's makes an amazing custard -- I am holding a spoonful of it in my user photo! Look at it! I ate the best vanilla custard ever there, followed immediately by an amazing flavor of the day called Too Much Chocolate, followed by the pinnacle of root beer floats. The float they make uses custard, THEIR custard, in a glass of draft Sprecher's root beer. What a brilliant idea! I need to give that float ten stars -- five for the custard and five more for Sprecher's.
Please open a branch in San Francisco, pretty please!
Best Burgers in Milwaukee HANDS DOWN!
One of the reasons I'm so Phat, Ice cream tastes like weak shaved ice after trying Kopp's custard, Actually most custard in Wisconsin (the real dairy state) is good, But Kopp's does stand out from the rest.
