Review from Elizabeth H.
Milwaukee, WI
99% of the time, I am a strict vegetarian, meaning I cannot say vegan due to the fact that on days like today, I want some CHEESE! I was listening to a program on 89.7 about grilled cheese, and I said to myself, "self, I'm going to Kopp's for a grilled cheese and pickle sandwich!" That was the best decision I have made all day!
I have loved Kopp's for as long as I can remember. It was my first job when I was 15. I made the shakes and sundaes...and I wore them all over my clothes.
The restaurant is clean and the food is consistently delicious. The owner and managers are good people. The same managers that I had when I was 15 still work there. That is a testament to the way that the owner, Karl Kopp, treats his employees, and for that, the whole establishment gets an "A" in my book.
My favorite sundae of all time: Hot fudge and raspberry!
My favorite shake or malt: Cherry!
My favorite custard flavor: Tiramisu!
Although I don't eat meat at all, I remember LOVING the burgers and chicken sandwiches, with pickles-a-plenty!
If ever I were to end this vegetarian thing (probably won't happen), Kopp's would be where the ship went down! -
Review from Corin W.
Take a step back into the 1950's. No, really. OK, maybe it's the idealized 1950's you might experience while playing Destroy All Humans, but this place is a blast and the custard is seriously delicious. And unlike playing Destroy All Humans no one has to get anal probed for the experience.
The building is round and made of brick and stainless steel. It's immaculately clean and so are the employees. (I can't believe I've never said 'the employees were immaculately clean' in a review before.) All the employees are dressed in white like 50's soda jerks and there's something fresh faced and pure about them.
There's only a couple of featured flavors a day. That's it. They change every day. And yet the place is packed.
Had a shake with the Mocha Chip. Really one of the best shakes I've ever had.
Go to Kopps. Have the custard and walk around back to see the cow statues. One of them is different from the rest. Now that you been given a mystery you must go and find out how the cow is different. Enjoy the adventure! -

The atmosphere here is good. The outside seating is pretty cool with a waterfall wall. The benches are concrete and not very comfortable to sit on.
The custard is very tasty. Not all of the flavors of the day are all that great, but I suppose it's all up to personal preference.
The staff look mostly like high school students on weeknights. Service is fine. And they all wear white and old style hats. -

My god do I love it here. Here over five guys ANY day of the week. Burgers are hot, fresh, and juicy. The cheese is always melted just right. I've found myself here many a night in all the seasons, specifically summer, too many times. Very quick, has the fast food feel but not taste. I'm not a huge huge fan of custard I more prefer ice cream or sorbet however you really can't go wrong with the custard here

Yum! This place rules! It is always packed in here, but they have a pretty good system worked out and I don't remember the wait being any longer than 5-10 minutes for my food. Last time I was here I got half a scoop of their flavor of the day, which was cherry, and half a scoop of chocolate custard and it honestly was the best ice cream I have ever had. In the summer there is lots of outdoor seating.

My recommendation to all Kopp's lovers. NEVER buy a house near this establishment. This is the reason I may need to go on cholesterol meds. 1st of all, for you chocolate fans, a must is "Never enough chocolate" which will be the flavor of the day very soon. As far as custard is concerned, it is orgasmic. Other then that, I switch off between there awesome burgers and excellent chicken sandwiches. Both which are big enough to feed you for lunch and diner. And while you eat that, don't forget there great onion rings. And of course to wash everything down, you need to have a Sprecher root beer. (Damn, I'm getting hungry writing this). My wife always gets the grilled cheese which she swears they infuse crack into the cheese. It's all just fatty goodness. A few other recommendation for custard are Tiramisu, Carmel cashew and red raspberry.

Review from Kyle K.
I have this personality flaw that makes me dislike something just because everyone else can't seem to shut up about how awesome it is. It is for this reason that, even though I grew up in Greenfield, I have probably only eaten at Kopp's a handful of times. Running errands in the area (more like a man date) with a childhood friend, we both wanted burgers. He, being of more sound mind than I, quite rightly insisted that we go to Kopp's. Double Cheeseburger, fries and root beer city. The burgers are HUGE and wonderfully messy. To quote my friend: "Kyle, you are making a big stupid mess of yourself with that thing.". Fact. The State of Wisconsin is going to deport me for saying this, but I'm not a fan of frozen custard. The custard here is universally approved of, so try it. Aside from the food, the grounds are pretty cool. The building and courtyard resemble a prison with a giant, jagged hole blown through one wall. There is a separate court that has a bunch of logs stacked up, which is probably fun for kids to break their necks on. My only complaint about Kopp's would be that when I am inflicting enormous beef and cheese punishment on myself, it would probably be nice to be able to sit down somewhere so I can avoid wearing half of my lunch. Just sayin.

Review from Terry B.
While I prefer the Port Washington Rd. location due it having taken my Kopp's virginity and oh the memories...this one is actually a tad bit better with more seating options outside and a wonderful waterfall.
Nonetheless, the burgers are, as mentioned, sick. Who doesn't like a bit of butter on their burger the size of a basketball rim? The fresh ingredients, carmelized onions and cheese and the best onion rings anywhere. I tried to teach my wife "custard control" with her 2 scoop cone, but it was for naught. She dripped more than a prostitute who hasn't had her yearly screening in a decade. The custard as always is divine and fortunately on this day, (one of two spent back in Milwaukee) they had my favorite flavor: chocolate chip mint.
Does life get any better? (probably could for the aforementioned prostitute, but for the rest of us, definitely not)Listed in: Miliwaukee

This location has plenty of charm with the waterfall and indoor high tables where you can people watch. Parking is pretty convenient with access from both streets since it's on the SW corner of the intersection.
The left side is just for custard while the right side is for ordering the food so if you're here for just dessert or a snack, they can take care of you quickly or you can enjoy a nice meal here. The burgers are pretty good here and are made to order so it's not just waiting under a heat lamp. I like getting the caramelized onion on the burger as well instead of just getting a hot burger with everything else cold. The fries are nice and crisp and can easily be dipped into the custard if you're looking for your own side sauce.
The custard is nice and solid, literally. It keeps its texture pretty well compared to their competition. Having two flavors of the day is also a good touch to always keep you interested. My last time was mint chip as well as chocolate cookie dough. Their forecasts also contain regional ingredients and real fruit flavors. Prices have always been fair.
My main issue with Kopp's is inconsistent service with the younger staff and having take home flavors from previous days. Sometimes I miss out on a flavor and would like to have it for another day! -

Friend: "Hey, I'll pay for your custard if you eat 6 scoops and you have to finish it here."
Me: "Fine"
-Facing Cashier
Me: "I would like 6 scoops of Trois Chocolat"
Cashier: "Seriously?"
Me: "He said he's buying. so yes"
Cashier: "Waffle Cone, Cake Cone, or Bowl?"
Me: "Waffle"
-Cashier hands me ~4lbs of custard on a waffle cone
Cashier: "Here's a bowl, hurry and take a picture before it falls."
Me: "okay I got this"
-5mins pass and 3 scoops remain.
Friend: "You don't have to finish it."
Me: "I'm almost done."
-2mins pass and 1 scoop remain.
Friend: "You can stop, I was just kidding."
Me: "It's about the principle."
-Custard is done.
Me: "This was pretty good, I don't think I'll be eating any custard for awhile." -

The best frozen custard anywhere, with the most creative flavors. Gets packed but runs like a well-oiled machine. The burgers are excellent too-overall it's a Milwaukee institution for good reason.
Also check out the fish sandwich, it rocks. -

Kopp's can be be simply summed up in three words: Guilty. Ass. Pleasure.
Guilty: Yes, I had the most amazing, succulent cheeseburger with Nueske's bacon and fried onions. Oh, and I suppose I had a scoop of delicious custard, too. Although, did I mention that the dish of custard comes with a triangle wafer? Does that count as communion??
Ass: Yup. That's where it all went. And that's where it shall remain until Zumba has been applied...thoroughly.
Pleasure: Liz Lemon would approve. -
Review from Jessica O.
Milwaukee, WI
Ambiance: Industrial minimalist. Steel everything countertops, appliances, shelves, etc. Very modern. Outside has a sunken deck with trees, plants and a waterfall. It's quite peaceful there in the summers.
Beverages: They have coke products on tap as well as Sprecher Rootbeer, so you can have a rootbeer float if you so desire. I would also be remiss if I failed to mention their incredible shakes and malts in so many flavors it makes my head dizzy just thinking of it. Not to mention they always run a "shake of the month". My favorites are Vanilla Malt, Blue Moon Shake (SOM), Lime Shake and Marshmallow shake. They come regular or thick. The regular is already a brick house, but the thick is something to marvel at. In my most humble opinion Kopps has the best shakes and malts I've ever had. Perfect to dip your salty greasy French Fries in....
Food: As far as fast food burgers go, there is no comparison. Big, butter burgers made to order per your specifications. My order is always cheeseburger with raw onion, ketchup and Bleu Cheese sauce. I usually get fries to dip into my malt too. But let's discuss those butter burgers shall we? There are important points I need to make:
*They have never, ever even once messed up my order. I don't know how on earth they manage to be perfect every stinkin' time, I'm sure it's a trade secret, I'm just happy they figured out how to do that voodoo magic.
*I have never been able to finish an entire burger on my own.
*The onion they give you is as big and thick as the burger itself. Thank you, Kopps, thank you for being generous with your onions.
Lest I forget, their custard and sundaes can make your day better. They run a sundae of the month too. My two favorite custard flavors are Tiramisu and Rum and Coke. If you get them in a dish you get one of those lovely fragile French cookies. Kopps does not skimp on the toppings/fillings/flavorings in their custards. When you order a Cherry Amaretto Cheesecake, you get tons of chunks of cheesecake and a generous dose of amaretto ribbon. Ditto that for Tiramisu, lots of lady fingers and coffee flavoring. You won't go a mouthful with only plain custard, each bite is jam packed.
Fries-Good, Grilled Cheese - Good, Onion Rings - Good. Let's make this easy, everything- GOOD.
Staff: Friendly and efficient. Even the teenagers who work there are polite.
Pointers: Kopps doesn't really have seating options. They have some small pub tables sans chairs inside the building and concrete benches in their sunken deck. If there is one negative it's that the benches are not very comfortable to sit on. I definitely get the feeling they don't want people loitering. The other thing you can take advantage of, especially if your out of state is their "Custom 10 Pack" where you can pick 10 flavors for the pack depending on what ship date you like. It makes a great, unique gift that showcases Wisconsin's awesomeness!Listed in: Burger Heaven

We went for the custard and kept coming back for the burgers.
My wife and I spent three months in Wisconsin on her nursing contract in Racine, and we drove to Milwaukee FAR too often just for Kopp's burgers. They are as big as your head! You should have seen the look on my wife's face the first time she realized how much onion they put on your burger if you request them. In case you're wondering, IT'S A LOT. About half an onion. I guess that could be good or bad depending on if you like them or not. We usually picked a few off.
I don't really know what else there is to say except you need to go here and order the burgers. I got custard from here three times and two of the three were just "meh." But the burgers... THE BURGERS... -

Let me start by saying there is absolutely nothing wrong with Kopp's, I just feel that there are far better custard places to check out...
Kopp's is a Milwaukee custard place that also has great food. Nice outdoor seating area which is good since there's nowhere to sit inside. Burgers with grilled onions are top notch.
Their custard is good, don't get me wrong. I'm a particular fan of their waffle cones and the little wafer cookies you get when you order a dish instead of a cone. But their actual custard is just okay. It seems a little icier than other custard I'm used to, and therefore less creamy.
Go for the burgers, and get custard as dessert. Just know you can get better custard elsewhere in Milwaukee... -

Being an out of towner, I always look for places that make the city unique. Kopp's is definitely one of those places. Very cool nostalgic feel, tasty burgers and awesome custard.
Seating: Although they do have some standing tables inside, you'll probably want to eat outside in their courtyard down by the waterfall fountain.
Food: I ordered the double burger (fyi-the double is huge) with fries and onion rings. The portions are fairly large and will most likely satisfy most customers. The thing that makes this place shine, however, is the custard (w/waffle cone). Rotating new flavors every day, along with the original vanilla and chocolate flavors make Kopp's a place you could visit over and over again. -
Review from Dani K.
Well, you see the rating this place has. Great prices, great tasting food for both desserts and meals, amazing outdoor seating (and I mean amazing), and the location by the restaurants and mall is ideal.
If you haven't tried this place, come to at least give it a try. You'll most likely be back. -
Review from Gelene V.
Went here on our drive from Chicago to Milwaukee last month.
We were only interested in trying the frozen custard, so we skipped the "Grill" line and went straight to the "Fountain" line.
Since it was our first time there, my sister and I ordered the Vanilla and my mom decided to try the Mint Chip.
The consistency of the custard is pretty thick, but smooth, and the flavors are extremely rich (in a good way).
It's probably one of those things I can eat in small proportions (2 scoops max), or else I'm going to hate myself and feel like I'm going to vomit due to richness overload.
... however, I did see a kid get 6 scoops on a Waffle Cone, which was dripping EVERYWHERE. Definitely gave him some kudos for attempting to finishing it while I fought my urge to run over with napkins..... Hey, to each their own!
Other notes:
Parking: pretty good, there's a lot you can park in
Seating: lots of outdoor seating, but indoor seating is limited
Lines: SUPER long on the "Grill" side, but fast on the "Fountain" side -

This is the only place in the world where I get my burgers with cheese and ketchup only. There is so much flavor in the cheese and the burger itself that the extra toppings on the burger just don't need to be there. I love how there are around 30 or more people working there on any given Friday or Saturday night..seriously, it's odd. But, they are just being cocky, I guess, because they know that they are going to sell like 20 billion delicious burgers and shakes every night. Go check it out...there's a reason why people go back again and again and again and again and again and again and again.

Yep, hands down the best frozen custard ON THE PLANET. So good that my Mom even sends me their custard, on dry ice, for Christmas (vanilla with their fudge sauce and addicting pecans.. holy moly!!!!!). Yes, this is totally possible, and absolutely, it is totally and completely worth it.
Um.. try a hot fudge milkshake and an order of fries and you will be in heaven. Guaranteed. -

If I only had to eat at one custard stand for the rest of my life, Kopp's would be it. Their custard is amazing in terms of flavor, texture, and the sheer variety of flavors of the day (its a good thing they always have two flavors of the day). Their burgers are good too, but I'm mostly always there for the custard. The seating here is rather unique, with mostly benches and standing-only pub tables, but they have an awesome outdoor area in the warmer months.

My favorite 'fast food' burger in the world.
Huge burger.... HUGE. The burger is topped with a hunk of butter so it can get kind of sloppy when the butter melts so leave it partially in the wrapper while you eat, almost like a burrito. The cheese is thick and gooey. The patty itself is pretty thin but has enough flavor so I'm not complaining.
For the size of burger you get, the price is more than affordable.
The seating in is less than optimal, especially in winter. There are only a few benches to sit on inside and then some tall bar-stool height tables but no seats. It's better to go in summer when you can sit outside by the waterfall.
For dessert, try the chocolate peanut butter log. The dish is lined in hardened chocolate, with a layer of creamy peanut butter, then more hardened chocolate. Then the dish is filled with three scoops of Kopps' amazing custard... topped off by more hardened chocolate and peanut butter. It is far too huge to eat on your own, especially if you just ate a burger before. It's a great size to split with two or three people for $5 total.
If you're a visitor or a resident, Kopps is a MUST!
In every review I read, other restaurant's burgers are ALWAYS compared to Kopps. This place is the benchmark for burgers in Wisconsin.Listed in: Milwaukee Burger Bonanza

YES!! It is that good!!!
I am not shocked to find that I am simply another fan that can't wait to rave about this place because it is better than any burger joint in LA and puts Ben and Jerry's to shame!!
Kopps serves your necessities: burgers, fries, onion rings, malt shakes and custard. Everything is made to order. Burgers are seriously the size of my face, but despite its size, the trimmings are awesome!! Esp the grilled onions. Every onion ring was cripsy and fried to perfection.
Now the custard, what can I say at $2 a scoop, I felt like I was getting double what I paid for. The creamy rich texture is to die for!!! They should seriously consider opening a chain in LA! -

I cannot say enough WONDERFUL things! I love Kopp's! Their custard is the BEST EVER and all of their food is great!
Try Tiramisu, Chocolate Peanut Butter Chocolate or Red/Black Raspberry flavors when they have them! -
Review from Angela K.
Kopp's is the epitome of Wisconsin fountain shop culture. Seriously, their custard is the best custard I've ever had in my life. Culvers, Leons, others can't beat it. Plus, there are so many flavors and sundaes to choose from each day! I love the turtle sundae. Also, I'm a vanilla girl--can't get enough vanilla ice cream or custard in my life. Take it from one who knows, Kopp's vanilla custard is the best.
One more thing: HUGE SANDWICHES!!! Seriously, some of the biggest burgers and sandwiches you could ever buy. They literally are the size of your head--please see my photo for reference. I love the fish sandwich with cheese and tartar sauce. Delicious grilled cheese too. Nomnomnom.Listed in: Tried and True

OH MY WORD, have you ever even seen a place that has gotten all 5 star reviews (80 of them) I have only ever gotten the custard here, this would be one thing I would request as a last meal. Cold, Creamy, Rich the little cookie they give you on the side. I could cry tears that I cannot have this wonderful treat and there is no telling when Ill ever be able to again!!
I haven't had custard in ten years, I don't think they have it in the south. If anyone knows otherwise or something that comes close please send me a message. -

Since the closing of Al's 20 years ago, this has been my family's choice for Sunday night custard. You can't go wrong.
For those of you on the north side, they do have a second location on Port Washington Rd.
There is also a third location on Bluemound road in Brookfield.Listed in: Craig's favorites

Here is how it works:
1. Order anything, and be sure to get extra napkins before you start eating. It will be messy. This will be the juiciest, tastiest burger that you have ever had.
2. Don't leave without trying the custard. There are flavors that they always have readily available (e.g. vanilla) and other flavors that they will only have on that day. There is a schedule with flavors, a 800-number hot-line that you can call to find out what the flavor will be, and even email notifications that you can sign up for to tell you when you when your favorite flavor will be available. You can even have them pack you a pint to go.
The only problem is that they are only in the Milwaukee area!

So. Much. Win.
If you are in the MKE area, it is a must. The building has a weird and cool exterior as well as a little outside area with benches and trees to enjoy your delicious custard.
The custard is perfect. Huge portions if you feel like sharing... or being gluttonous... Try it on a waffle cone- best diabetic coma ever.
#1 flavor: strawberry
#2: snow drift (only comes in second because you can't rely on it- it's seasonal for the winter only) -

Milwaukee, WI
Butter burgers here beat the hell out of Culver's, but I go here for the fish sandwich with cheese (of course) that's also cheaper than a McD's filet, and the custard.
The decor makes this a place that everyone should check out at least once. And the little garden area outside is pretty nice looking as well. The sublime a.c. in the hot summer months is a fond memory too.
Anyway, the important part...the custard. The basic vanilla and chocolate (swiss) are decent enough, but it's the flavor forcast that sets the standard. With two new flavors every day, and a constant rotation, they could've done a random whatever and put a sign up like Culver's.
But no, not Kopp's. Here, you know the entire month ahead of time every flavor that will be served. I know that I'll stop in on the 24th for Night Rider, because chocolate custard with oreo and marshmallow = win. It's that easy.
And then there's the gift delivery. You can order 10 pints to be sent in dry ice and a cooler as a gift. I'm trying to find out if it's logistically possible to have one of these sent to a friend in Afghan right now.
With some crazy sundae's and a wide selection of shake flavors, a monthly over the top shake and sundae feature, and consistent food, this place should be a staple for everyone. -

Although I prefer the place on Bluemound, this place is closer - just off of 894. This is as god as it gets. I know gas is $5 a gallon. But people from Chicago, do yourself a favor check out the flavor list, pick a day and pack a cooler. Put 3 hours a side and drive here. If you see a flavor several days before you get there, call they will pack some away.
When you get there, grab some lunch (great burgers and rings) then grab some custard. Pack the cooler with as much as you can, remember gas is $5 a gallon.
Some personal favorites...
Strawberry
Red raspberry
Peach
Grasshopper Fudge
This stuff is so creamy-velvet with fresh ingredients it should be illegal.
Thank goodness they are not closer, I would be obese. -

Four of us went to Kopps on a hot day hoping to escape from the heat and sit down for a meal; WRONG!! There is no seating to speak of, just a few benches, and tall round table to stand at; the double patty burgers had so much grease, we needed lots of napkins to soak it up; I had the single burger and it was fine/tasty; our friends were so disgusted they didn't want to stay and try some custard; we will not go there again for several reasons; at least have a place to sit!!

The custard is really, up there as among the very best, duh! The food is really good, I like the grilled cheese, and the burgers and fries are delicious. The onion rings are very tasty, and they go great, paired with a double dip cone. I wish there was better seating. It is primarily bench seating with no tables. Well, if you want a table they have tall ones that you can stand in front of. The place is hopping year-round, so I guess the food makes up for the lack of comfortable seating.

Review from Brad S.
I've been eating Kopp's for as long as I can remember, and it's amongst the quintessential definition of frozen custard. Lord knows what made Elsa Kopp choose to serve custard rather than ice cream (or what made Milwaukee a breeding ground for this vastly superior dish to begin with), but I'm glad they did.
While we perfected frozen custard by the 1950s, we had a long way to go on the hamburgers, fries, and onion rings which served as the drive-in staples of the time. As a result, I 'm not as big of a fan of the non-frozen offerings, though I found both the burger and rings to be fine versions of the classical representations of each of these items. There are plenty better to find in the city, but the custard? The custard is all you need. -

am obsessed with kopps custard! Whenever I am visiting Milwaukee I have to make a stop off and grab a cup of whatever the flavor of the day is. I have tried their burger and chicken sandwich both of which are awesome not to mention huge. There is something classic about this place that I love and it will always be on my travel itinerary when I am heading up to Milwaukee.

Wow. This place is good. Not just good, CRAZY good. Buffalo chicken sandwich was really good. ALL the custard was fantastic. Vanilla and Chocolate are staples, but other flavors change daily, so if your heart is set on something, I would check online first, or keep a monthly menu you can pick up there that tells you when to expect what.
Turtle sundae was to die for.
Chicken buffalo sandwich was grilled spicy perfection.
100 reasons why you should by frozen Kopps custard, proudly displayed in the lobby, priceless.
Not a whole lot of places to sit inside. With stuff this good, who cares!
Definitely worth a trip, detour or whatever you need to do to GET HERE! -

I've been coming here as a kid. The burgers are huge and very good. Awesome atmosphere, very fast and friendly service. Only 4 stars though because another establishment has the best custard on the planet ;)
