I have been coming to this Kopps location ever since I can remember. For some reason, as a kid, I had this thing about feeding my stuffed animals everything that I ate. Maybe that was the start of my need to please people or I just wanted to share my delicious chocolate frozen custard with my favorite Papa Smurf doll. It was just too good to keep to myself, and my Papa Smurf still has a chocolate stain in his beard!

So, this past weekend my mom and I did our usual trip to the Red Lobster (her favorite), went to a really cool apple orchard up the street, and even though we were stuffed from cheddar garlic biscuits, shrimp and apples, the big sign was flashing....TODAYS FLAVOR...CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DOUGH! Omfg! My favorite! So, the big handicapped van that carries my moms Lil Rascal squeals in. I took my first lick and was immediately reminded of how amazingly good this custard is. Nothing else compares and the fact that they use regular sized chocolate chips in their cookie dough custard just made it all the better.

Kopps is clearly the best place for custard and worth your stop next time you are visiting the great state of WI!

Ok...so there are several Kopp's locations but this is the one my parents took me to as a kid and still my favorite location today despite the lack of indoor seating. I remember begging my mom and dad to stop here whenever we were in the area.

This is a very unassuming place and if you didn't know better and were not from around here, you would probably not think to stop in. And you would be an idiot, because this is the best custard on the planet. Trust.

So occasionally they have a really weird flavor of the day and it kind of makes you go "huh...I didn't think bananas cheesecake lime java would be good" but then you taste it and realize these custard people are gods among men. For the most part, though, everything is relatively normal and utterly fantastic. Their butter pecan is literally the one of the best things I've ever tasted.

The only drawback is that there is no indoor seating which is kind of a bummer in Wisconsin winters, but once you've tried this, you'd gladly stand outside in a blizzard just to have it again.

I have no regret adding on another 5 star review for one of my favorite stops in Milwaukee. Custard and burgers are made perfect with the best products. Always overstaffed and ready to go. Outdoor seating is beautiful and you wouldn't know you're on a busy street. Daily flavors are always wonderful and interesting, but they still manage to bring back favorites. I hear that you can order your custard online now! I am guilty to say that I'll most likely be trying that when the future Kopp's temptation arises.

I'm glad that I don't live in Milwaukee because I would be gigantic from eating here all the time.

Your in Milwaukee and wondering what you've GOT to do.  You have GOT to get your butt to anyone of their many locations and have custard.  If you are lactose intolerant, than you need to pop a lactaid and have custard and a cheeseburger.  Cuz Lactaid is expensive and you may as well relish in the moment.

Is frozen custard better than ice cream?  That's a good question you must ponder while enjoying some.  If it's summer there will be a wait and that wait is well worth the time.

The fact that this place is loved by so many people attests that how cool this place is.  Yeah, the frozen custard was very good.  It's basically the mix in taste of frozen yogurt and ice cream, but still have a distinctive taste.  The special of the day we went there were chocolate and raspberry, and that combination was really good.

But what stood out to me was how this place would resemble a old creamery.  The interior was pristine, and cashiers were friendly.  This place has two today's special, and it actually differs everyday, not like every Monday or sorts.  They also have a monthly special menu which I'm sure local would bring it home to decide which date(s) to go.  There was even a sign that mentioned 100 reasons to buy gift cards, and I thought many of them were cute.

Too bad that, even if they ship to sell, the minimum quantity is 10 pint for $75 or sorts.  And the shipping would cost about the same!  Oh well, it should be treated not as a negative, but as a reason people should visit this place when they are in Milwaukee.

I love Kopp's-- it's like a post-apocalyptic world of custard.  The outdoor area is kind of futuristic looking, but the inside is a 1950's malt shop.

They have huge and delicious burgers, but, c'mon you're not here for the burgers.  You're here for the custard.  They have traditional flavors of vanilla and chocolate every day, but the real draw is the special flavors of the day, which are their version of Blizzards.  Well, except that they're the most exceptional flavors of Blizzards you have ever heard of--"Pancakes and Syrup," "Tiramisu,"and "German Apple Struesel," just to name a few.

Take that Dairy Queen!

Kopp's is King in Milwaukee for custard and their burgers are huge and outstanding as well. The place is ultra clean for starters and the old fashioned soda fountain white caps and aprons lends the super polite and helpful young staff the air of a bygone era.

The custard is awesome, go for the Flavor of the Day (check the three-day forecast) or go for Vanilla in a Waffle Cone! Sundaes, malts and all that good fountain stuff is here as well. Their burgers are huge and you have to tell them what you want on them when you order, and remember the mustard is the brown spicy kind, and onions are grilled unless you specify raw (as I do!). They give you a number then call your number from a microphone under a color (green, red, blue, yellow). Listen for your number! Onion rings are superb, top your order off with a Sprecher Root Beer while you're at it.

The outside seating with a waterfall and pine trees is great in the summer. Seating inside is not available at this location, save for maybe 2 high tops if you want to stand. Mmmm....pick up on Green, Kopps!

Absolutely every time I'm in Milwaukee I have to make at least one stop at Kopp's. But don't go there just for the frozen custard, which is amazing, try one of their burgers too. In fact, if I didn't think they'd run me out on a rail for saying so, I might confess that I like the double cheeseburger and fries even better than the custard. It's hard to go wrong here no matter what you choose. You could probably just close your eyes and point and still be happy.

This review comes hot on the heels of reviewing Scooters in Chicago. But this is where I got my custard jones satisfied when I was a kid.

The frozen treat is top notch. Do not pass this place up. The burgers are also HUGE and dripping with perfection.

Love 'em. Miss 'em. If only there were a Kopps in Miller Park....

THIS IS A 10 STAR RATING!!!

3 Words, SNICKERS CHUNKY CHEESECAKE, nuff said.

There are absolutely no words that can truly express how awesome Kopp's is, but I'll give it a try.  It just amazes how so few people on this planet understand the true meaning of greatness.  Haagen Daaz...bleh.  Gelato...bleh.  Frozen Custard, now that's where it's at, OH HELLS YEAH!

Every day here is Christmas, with a new toy (Daily Custard Flavors).  Their burgers, GINORMOUS.  But that's just a compliment to the main attraction.  The world NEEDS to know how awesome custard is, especially since it's still limited to primarily the midwest.  Kopp's are the experts with this stuff and I only pray that they'll one day franchise this place and give me the opportunity to have this daily before I die.  Highly doubt it'll every happen, but a boy's gotta dream.  Spread the word so that more can enjoy this oh so creamy spoonful of heaven.

Best frozen custard establishment. Goodness gracious -- how I miss thee! I wish you had a home in Chicago -- that way, I can gain an unneeded 100 lbs!

Custard is so fresh - and the flavors of the day are amazing. You must pick up the calendar for reference.

I miss you Kopps and I can't wait to gain an extra pound or so when I see you again.

Frozen Custard is a highly emotional issue in Milwaukee. The choice of your preferered custard stand is a very personal consideration. Some people go for the ambience, energy and straight-forward, no-nonsense menu and flavor varieties of Leon's. Others go for the more adventurous, avant garde Kopp's. Others still cling to their neighborhood custard stands, like Gille's, Roberts, or Kitts.

I used to work at Kopp's years and years ago. So I know firsthand the TLC that goes into every single batch of custard churned out by Karl Kopp and company. This place does not skimp on quality. Those custard machines are more finnicky that you could imagine. Each machine has its own personality; you have to constantly caress and cajole each machine, making miniscule adjustments, so that every single scoop turns out just the right consistency. It's a tough job, and I'm man enough to admit I couldn't hack it. My stint as Custardmeister was short lived, but it taught me some valuable lessons in patience and integrity.

The custard. Smooth, rich and creamy. Don't you DARE call this ice cream. Ice cream is made in huge industrial sized plants. Notice you don't see too much frozen custard in the grocery store. That's because frozen custard, unlike ice cream, is best made by the batch, not the ton. The men and women who make custard are artists. Kopp's understands this. The flavors of the day at Kopp's push the envelope. Karl and company are always innovating. New flavors, new sundaes. You could go once a week for years and always see something new every time you go.

The Kopp's that I worked at was next door to several business hotels. So at least once a week some businessperson from the East or West Coast would get all excited after trying frozen custard, and start inquiring about how much the machines cost, what the ingredients were, whatever. But what they didn't understand is that custard is a Wisconsin thing. It's a Milwaukee thing. Custard is a richer, fattier, higher in cholesterol version of ice cream. It's not going to catch on in LA.

The burgers. This is where I take a point off. Back in my custard making days, I ate one of these fat burgers every single day. I got sick of them real quick. I stop into Kopp's about twice a year to have one of those burgers. About an hour after consumption, I'm reminded why I only have one every six months or so. These things are huge, greasy, sloppy, and incredibly delicious. But they will bust your gut.

So, in sum, Kopp's is highly recommended, especially if you're new to frozen custard. If you're not into hefty, greasy, saltly mounds of beef, then stay away from the burgers.

For an outsider like me, Kopp's sums up what Milwaukee is all about - fat people and fattening food - and I love it. It's because of places like this that Wisconsin is America's fattest state, but no one seems to care because the burgers are superb and the frozen custard outstanding.

First, the burgers are about as wide across as your face. Get the double cheeseburger and load it up with toppings (including bacon now!). So greasy and delicious.

Second, try the frozen custard. For non-midwesterners, frozen custard appears to be just soft-serve ice cream. But it's not. It's much creamier and heavier - and MUCH better. Kopp's always has chocolate and vanilla and one or two different flavors each day - that's how fresh the stuff is. On my last visit I had chocolate chip cookie dough, which was divine. They sprinkled actual chocolate chips and pieces of cookie dough into the custard first, then scooped it out into my dish. Excellent.

Enjoy your burger or custard outside in the courtyard with the waterfall. A weird setting, but peaceful and relaxing all the same.

For any visit to Milwaukee, Kopp's is a must.

OMFG.

Start with a delicious face-burger! With cheese! In fact, have a double!

Fries are great here too as are the crispy onion rings! Nothing better than a root beer AND chocolate malt to wash it all down.

Oh, then there's dessert. There's some Flavor of the Day's I absolutely hate, but to each his own...90% ROCK! My favorites are the holiday and festival-themed creations.

I'd eat here EVERYDAY breakfast, lunch and dinner...but I prefer not to be the size of a whale...smallish hippo, yes...whale, no.

Okay honestly, frozen custard is pretty dang delicious. I came to visit Milwaukee for a friend's wedding and everyone I've talked to told me about the legendary frozen custard of Wisconsin, because, really, what else is there to do out here?
I love this restaurant, futuristic on the outside, nostalgic on the inside. For $2 you can get a huuuugggeeee scoop of frozen custard on a cake cone. Yummmm... Haven't tried their food, but it sure did smell good.

Ever had frozen custard?

I hadn't until i came to Milwaukee.  Kopps has actually been on Oprah (if you didn't know).  Think of it as a smoother ice cream.

Here at Kopps, they make the flavors right here, and the fun part about it is that they have a different flavor of the day each day!  There is a menu they give out each month to tell you which flavors they will be serving on what days.  When i was there, it made me want to go each day to try the new flavor!  good thing i don't live there, i just might turn into a big fatty!

You'll be surprised too at how many people still get frozen custard even when it is negative degrees outside and snowing.

converted one ice-cream lover to a Kopp lover this afternoon. Again. every time i force someone into the confines of MKE i bribe them with Kopp's. It's really the only reason to visit Milwaukee. It's certainly not for Mader's.

The giant burgers are completely disgusting but who gives a hoot when you can drown your Kopp's with Sprecher's root beer? what an amazing combination? it's like pouring melted butter straight into your root beer. SICK! DELICIOUS!

"4 Asians walk into a frozen custard stand" ... my friend was working for Marquette University, and we decided to go out and visit the vast Milwaukee cuisine of everything dairy:  cheese, cheese curds, fried cheese curds, and frozen custard!

We drove a good twenty minutes to get to this place, and I WAS SO GLAD THAT WE DID!  I can still see the custard being made and squirted out from an ice cream machine-type thing. I think that we went back two more times to experience Kapp's before we left for the bay area.

Yes, the custard is very, very good.  Yes, it's better than ice cream, and I also appreciate those little salted nuts in the turtle custard.  But that is not important.  Let's stick to the real issues.

There is not a food item in existence that tastes better than a Kopp's cheeseburger with the works.  Nothing else compares.  Let me tell you what Kopp's has done for me.

I'm the kind of girl who goes to Subway and orders a sub that only has turkey, bread, and a slice of cheese.  I am definitely a cheese-mustard-ketchup person only when it comes to normal fast food hamburgers.  I am a picky eater and I have a mortal fear of vegetables.

Therefore, the fact that I would ever order something with "the works" is pretty significant.  And even more significant, "the works" includes vegetables!  Grilled onions, mustard, ketchup, cheese, pickles - all on a buttered and grilled bun.  And the patty is large yet relatively thin.  There is nothing better than a big, thin burger.  Screw those nasty, paunchy, fat burgers that fill your mouth with beef and drown out those lovely condiments.

In total seriousness, this is the best burger ever.  Plus, ordering is efficent and you get it quickly - even when you're in a party of 35-40 people.  The fact that our college swim team bus always stopped at Kopp's on the way home from Carroll College always took the sting out of losing yet another meet.

My vote for favorite custard in the city (we have so many places to choose from) is definately Kopp's!  I especially love the sundaes if the flavor of the day doesn't work for me.

Kopp's has always been a family desination growing up, I fondly remeber our family trips there and I even ate my last meal w/meat in in 20 years ago...  it was a Kopp's burger!

Last summer my sister is the one that brought me to this revelation of my love of Kopp's.  It was during a little family motorcycle ride on a hot summer night....  My parents drove up next to me and asked if we wanted to pull into an upcoming competiting custard stand so I sped up to catch up to my husband who had my sister on the back of his bike and I yelled, "hey, dad wants to know if we want to go to ****'* for some custard?" and my sister shouted back immediately "not really because I really prefer Kopp's!".  I laughed but agreed and settled for the other place on our route as Kopp's would have been out of the way but the entire time I was wishing I was at Kopp's enjoying their creamy goodness of a custard like my sister expressed!

4 stars for a custard stand where you buy a burger and then eat it in your car or standing up at a table when it is too cold to eat on a stone bench outside?  You betcha.  I'd give it 5 stars but I'm a tough grader.  Good burgers (large and thin, not the thick kind), good fried and onion rings.

The reason one goes is the custard, vanilla, chocolate and the "flavor of the day."  The entire month's flavors appear on their web site.
i live almost 25 miles from the nearest Kopps but when it is Mocha Chip day my wife insists that we make the trip.  When premium gas was $4.35 a gallon it was no deterrence to making the trip.  One of those things to do in Milwaukee along with the zoo and the Harley Museum.

Kopp's is a landmark. It's first shop on Appleton Ave closed when I was a kid, but it sprung up several more locations. Each location serves excellent quality jumbo burgers about 6-7 inches across. But Kopp's is not my pick for best burger.

Kopp's is my pick for best frozen custard in Milwaukee. If you don't know what frozen custard is and you are in Milwaukee don't stop at a Culver's for your first lick, head straight to Kopp's. They always have a flavor of the day, but my favorite is chocolate. It's a dark chocolate, not a sweet milk chocolate.

The first time I went to Kopp's, it was a 35-minute detour after a Woodman's beer run in Kenosha. After having tried it, I now insist on a Kopp's stop any time I come within 30 minutes of the state of Wisconsin. The custard is just phenomenal. Every scoop is a scoop of creamy sugary buttery awesome. The grill food is really great too, like the cheesy jumbo burgers, the Buffalo chicken sandwich (just about the only food on which I'll eat blue cheese), and the onion rings (omg the onion rings, always perfect how do they do it?). The space reminds me, perhaps, of a temple and meditation garden, which is fitting considering that if there were ever a place to worship at the altar of custard, this is it.

Wow, this place is insanely fantastic.  Didn't try the food, but the frozen custard was blow your mind good.  The salted pecans in the turtle sundae were perfection.  Additionally, I love that the location we visited was actually architecturally interesting and run like a well-oiled, albeit extremely busy, machine.  This is not your typical frozen custard shack.  Loved it.  You know it's good when they can be as successful and busy as they are with only three flavors du jour.  Next time we'll acutally try the food, but I will definitely be coming back for the custard.

No visit home is complete without a side trip to Kopp's. Gigantic servings of frozen custard that's made fresh on the premises. I'm always mesmerized by the glacial flow of creamy sugary goodness creeping out of the machines behind the counter. They have vanilla, chocolate and a daily flavor that is often fabulous and very generous with the mix-ins. You can also get burgers too (not worth the trip alone IMHO). This location is housed in a soaring custom-built cement-and-glass structure that has a post-modern 50's burger 'n shake joint feel. And it's so cheap!
