The owner Domic helped us try to surf - he was so patient and really helped us feel comfortable and eventually get up on a wave. What a great time we had on our first time ever trying to surf. We did not feel scared at all!
If you are going to try surfing on the Big Island - this is the only place on the beach and with locals teaching you how to surf. -

Recently had my 2nd surf lesson at Mission Beach in San Diego, and had received many compliments on my surfing skill from my classmates. I was asked how long I had been surfing and told that I was really good and I think a lot of it had to do with the instruction I had received at Kona Surf. I am officially addicted to surfing and am in the process of purchasing my first board. Thank you Kona Surf Co. :-)

I got a chance to hang with Jae for a couple days. Not only did he recommend the perfect board for me, but was extremely friendly too. While we were out in the water, I noticed Jae giving pointers to people that were previous customers, or just beginners in general... they weren't even paying him, just surfing at the same spot... Now THAT'S cool.
There's an awesome surf spot right in front of the shop, so you can sit in lawn chairs and watch everybody. They even have someone taking professional pictures from the shore (with a very nice camera) so if you want, you can buy a pic later.
