Nothing but good things to say about Kona Boys. We've rented kayaks for exploring Kealakekua Bay twice now and things couldn't have gone better. The first time we also took a guided tour of the bay and had a terrific time. The second time we rented our own and also had a terrific time. They even gave us a 15% discount for being repeat customers... cool!

They have a real laid back attitude that helps to get you in the mood for some relaxing exploration.  Brock really hooked us up: he even showed us how easily we could secure our double kayak onto the roof of our rental convertible. How cool is that? His toddler son was also there and gave us his two cents about the bay (in baby-talk but still pretty informative.)

I'll definitely use Kona Boys during my next visit to the Big Island.

We bought a group guided Kayak Tour through Kona Boys.  While the price was a bit steep, the experience overall was worth it. We started off our morning getting our gear at the shop. Staff at the shack were knowledgeable and friendly.  The mosquitos even loved us! (warning, wear DEET while in the store)  The store staff fitted us for our snorkel gear and sent us to the dock to meet our guide, Kate.  Kate was awesome. She had the kayaks, dry bags, life jackets, etc all ready for us.  She even had a packed lunch and bottles of water!  We were off and into the water in no time.  She lead us to Captain Cook Monument. During our trip, Kate provided interesting information about the island.  She knew all the good spots to see dolphins while we kayaked and colorful fish when we snorkeled.  This was a great tour!

Four of us rented two double kayaks from Kona Boys to do the whole Kealakekua Bay trip.  I think it was about $74 for a double kayak with all the fixin's for 24 hours.

Totally laid back yet very efficient business they've got going on there.  As soon as you are out of the car, someone is helping you.  Frank got us set up and made sure we had everything we needed.  He also gave a brief "class" on where to go (complete with photos!) to put in, what to expect when we got there and tips on how to have the least impact on the environment & fish while out there as well as letting us know to not leave our lunch out as a mongoose will surely steal it.

Frank came across as very sincere in wanting to help us out and answer any questions we had.  It's obvious Kona Boys really cares about the area and the bay and has a good relationship with the locals.

You will experience much aloha at Kona Boys.  Stop by and check them out.

I went to Kona Boys to rent snorkel gear. I could not have asked for a better customer service experience. I went late in the morning, so they were low on gear at that time. Instead of telling me they were sold out, I got a higher quality mask than their normal rental. I wish I knew the name of the guy who helped me - he gave me a card both times I was there and there was a different name both times! - because he was so helpful. He told us the best places to go in the area to go snorkeling. That is expected, I guess, but he told us to contact him if we had any questions about the area - directions, things to do, etc. And based on the pace of their business renting kayaks and surfboards, it's not like they can just sit and wait for us tourists to call and ask for help.

Another point, as I mentioned above they are very busy. There were multiple customers both times I was there. The aforementioned Kona Boy seemed to be helping all of us effectively at one time.

If you find yourself in Kona and need some gear on your way to Kealakekua Bay (or not, but just need gear), do yourself a favor and head over to Kona Boys.

I've gone there twice so far to borrow a kayak and each time has been an excellent experience. Frank's easy-going and very quick in terms of getting everything up on one's car roof.

The second time I went it was cloudy and we weren't sure whether or not to paddle out to the Captain Cook Monument for snorkeling.  He could have just said  "eh, just go. it'll probably clear up.", but he was honest and recommended to wait til later or tomorrow.

Among all the kayak rental places in that area, I'd definitely go with Kona Bays again.
