Wholly deliciousness! This place is bomb! The service was amazing and the food put it over the top. When the server came out with the basket of pita to eat with herbs and feta I thought it was going to be something that I didn't want to waste tummy space on, but I was wrong. OMG I stuffed that pita with all kinds of herbs and a hint of feta and I ate! I could've eaten that as a meal. It was so delicous and refreshing. We ordered hummus as an appetizer not realizing that we would get all of that delicous pita and herb stuff. We still ate it and it was really good. A little to much oil but hey I was feeling like a fatty so I didn't mind. Then the food came and it was amazing. I got a veggie kabob and the veggies had so much flavor. There were these mushrooms that were so delicous that I wish I could've ordered a plate of them. My husband got some kind of steak which was really good as well. The rice was so yummy too. The only thing that I was not so pleased with were the prices. I had the living social deal voucher which was $20 for $40 worth of food and I still spent about another $20. So without the voucher it would've been a $60 meal for 2 people.

The only things I would add to the reviews already up are:
(1) They have two eggplant appetizers, and several people didn't specify which one they were recommending. I'd definitely recommend the Bademjan Borani, which is something I hadn't seen before and is very good.
(2) I much prefer the fesenjan at M. Shahrzad. It's tastier, prettier, and has no bones. The dish at Kolbeh Kabob will literally have you picking dozens of bones out of your mouth. -

Persian and Mediterranean food.
Located on the corner of Illinois and Greenback.. next to a liquor store.
Despite lots of lattices-- behind frames and on the ceiling with fake plants hanging from it.. I think it's a nice interior. Our server was very welcoming and nice. We didn't even try to pronounce names in the menu and she was fine with us just pointing, then she'd pronounce the words for us, and we nodded, "Yes, that one".
(I appreciate her saying the word.. It steps us in the direction of familiarity.)
The food was good. Dinner started off with pita bread, fresh herbs, feta, and butter. Our appetizer and entrees followed. The entrees were large portions. Like, eat half and take the rest home kind of large.
I had a Living Social voucher, which, they run periodically. They automatically add gratuity to the check and then subtract the voucher amount. All in all, it was a good meal AND! I was delighted to see that for lunch they had great specials under $10. -

Stopped by for dinner about a month ago. My BFF and I had the chicken breast and koobideh kabobs. Both were delicious and the rice was perfect. The pre-meal bread and herbs were soft and fresh, respectively. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the salad shirazi. Seemed to have an overkill of herbs and spices, although its possible that's how it's supposed to be. I would definitely eat here again.

Excellent find! Better than Famous Kabob down on Fulton, lower prices too! Even with the Lamb Koobedeh being a bit dry, it tasted great! Will go back next time I'm in California.

Good food for sure. Koobideh is kind of spicy and the shirazi Has way too much lemon. Nice place though.

We loved this place. from the outside, the place almost looks shady, but once you get in, it is very pleasant, casual setting. The service was good and the owner (I think) came by and enquired about the food.
The food was great. They gave some pita bread and some herbs and feta cheese to stuff in it while we were waiting for food (I guess just like chips and salsa) which was also very good.
We had the chicken kabob (thigh meat) and were completely blown away. The chicken was perfect and the rice was also great. The other plate that we got was lamb shish kabob which was good as well. While I thought, the lamb was very slightly over cooked, it was still good (not as awesome as chicken). The grilled vegetables (bell peppers, jalapenos, mushrooms, zucchini) that came with lamb were awesome though.
The portion size was good as well. We ordered 1 yogurt drink which was delicious too. The only reason, I am giving this a 4 star instead of 5 is it seemed a little pricey. No alcohol, no starters, just 2 entrees and 1 non-alcoholic drink came out to about 40 (not including tip).
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place! -

Strange location, but amazing food!
I love Persian food and have a few good Persian friends so I am a little picky when it comes to this type of cuisine. Everything we ordered was scrumptious!
Loved the KASHKE-BADEMJAN! I ordered a cinnamon rice vegetarian dish which is something I have never tried and it was fantastic!
I was so looking forward to a bottle of Due Vigne Dolcetto. Not in the cards for me today as they were all out... total bummer!
Portions are huge! I have a meal for tomorrow. I also took home some baklava and it was tasty! Our server threw in an extra baklava to make up for the lack of wine I think ; ) She was so sweet!
We will definitely be back! -

A delightful meal, almost too big. There is good food and good value and we do recommend this place. The flavors are authentic and upscale. Don't let the outside fool you, it is comfortable and delicious inside.

Last night I tried Kolbeh Kabob for the first time, with a friend who had never experienced the joys of Persian cuisine before. I struggled with the star rating, I really wish you could give half points, I would have given a 2.5 but I decided to round down because I think the overall rating that prompted me to try Kolbeh is a bit on the high side.
Let me start with the good: Our service was excellent, attentive without being annoying. The restaurant itself was spotless with very attractive decor on the inside. The menu offered a very large variety of traditional dishes that I have been enjoying for the 30 years since my good friend Amir took me to my first Persian restaurant back in 1980 when I was working in Silicon Valley.
As is traditional, we began our meal with Pita and fresh herbs with a bit of goat cheese. So far, so good. We ordered our main courses "half and half" and they brought out the salads first. I enjoyed the very tart dressing, but was disappointed with the quality of the olives of all things - this dinner wasn't cheap, mind you, $57 before gratuity, and neither of us ordered alcohol or dessert. So the inclusion of rather uninteresting canned CA black olives was a cost cutting corner that shouldn't have been taken at these prices.
Our main courses arrived, my friend had the beef Sultani and I had the Kubideh "combo". Again, starting with the good: Our beef kubideh kabobs were excellent, as good as anything I've had anywhere. And the rice and grilled tomatoes were in this same category, though not much of a challenge to cook. As to the rest, my friends filet mignon kabob had a very unusual and unappetizing flavor. And my Kubideh combo included lamb and chicken kabobs that were not up to par. My lamb kabob was very dry and not juicy and flavorful as the beef one; and the chicken one was inedible. It looked and tasted like chorizo, which I do like but not as part of a Persian meal.
All in all I'm glad I gave Kolbeh a try, but I am not likely to return. -

I love this place though I've only ordered one thing. The chicken kabobs. The chicken and rice are both top notch. The chicken is tender and very well seasoned. The rice is light and fluffy with a very tasty buttery flavor.
The atmosphere is also very nice but casual. I've been here 4 or 5 times and each time it was quite empty. It scares me that this might be the next in line of my favorite places that falls victim to the economy. I hope that it's only that I go at odd times.
The service has always been great thought most of the time I'm the only customer. -

I had the classic Persian dish of fesanjoon (sp?) and it was delicious. I love their saffron ice cream, with pistachios and flavored with rose water. The energy of the place is very relaxing, warm and inviting, which is not what you expect when you're outside in front of the building. This is a hidden gem in suburban Sacramento. We drive all the way from Grass Valley for the food here.

Excellent! Have been to many Persian places all over the US. This is the best!
Everything is good, entrees, appetizers, drinks, desserts, etc..
This is my new "go to" place.... wish they were open for lunch also. -
Review from Ali P.
Pretty damn good. And cheaper than Famous Kabob! But, it is farther out than Famous Kabob (assuming you're in Downtown or out in Davis, like me). Nice interior decor, too!
Very good kabobs (we tried lamb, chicken, and beef), excellent rice, bread, sabzi (greens), feta cheese, and above all, excellent soda (I hate it when restaurants bring you your $1.75-Coke in a can with no refills!).
If you've tried Famous Kabob or you're in the mood for good Persian/Iranian food, head out here because you'll leave very satisfied. Perhaps even more satisfied than the morning after your wedding night. Perhaps. -

The food & service were very good. Large portions - a little expensive but well worth it. Comparable to Anatolian Table in Rocklin. Iced tea is strong.

If you like kabobs, you will love this place. You can sprinkle your own sumac on your food like salt and pepper.
I enjoyed my kabob, prime rib and chicken breast, although I think I really prefer dark meat chicken. The meat was marinated in a saffron based sauce, so the chicken came out yellow. It was too spicy for Beanie, my baby who loves chicken, but she chowed on her dad's filet mignon kabob (very good cut, very subtle flavors) and my mom's lamb stew (cinnamon based egglplant and lamb stew, very tender meat, not very lamb-y if you know what I mean. Good stuff.)
We also got the hummus, which was garlicky and sour, and not as tahini-esque as it can be. It was made with sesame oil instead of tahini. There was a cucumber-tomato-onion salad that was good as a relish/salsa. The yogurt/cucumber dip was really good too, and Beanie had some of that. She likes plain yogurt, so it was flavorful, but not too spicy. The hummus was too spicy for her. She actually shuddered and clenched up all 4 of her teeth when I fed her some of the hummus. Poor kid. But she liked all the cucumber dip and salad.
I got a green romaine salad. It was made with apple cider vinegar and "liquid aminos". I kept thinking of that crazy Bragg's company. Suffice it to say, the little salad looked good, was nutritious, but it had a weird flavor due to the aminos.
I also have to mention the stuff that comes before the meal: basket of herbs (cilantro, mint, basil, green onion tips), feta cheese (small little block) and flat bread (this is not pita-looking, it's more like rectangles of flat, flat tortilla only it tastes very good and not greasy.) You drop a few herbs on the flat bread, pinch off some feta and sprinkle it on, and bingo, the oddly tasty little refreshing bite of yum . I started adding hummus and yogurt cuke dip and really getting into my food.
I was so full, I could not finish my giant plate of meats, rice, and grilled roma tomatoes (I will eat them cooked or diced very teensy.) I just finished it for lunch, and it's good the next day as well.
The restaurant itself: weirdly, it's in a strip mall between a pond/koi supply and a liquor store, at the corner of Illinois and Greenback across from the new Winco (sniff, no more Lumberjack, sniff.) It's lovely inside. They reallly put a lot of effort into the decor. Even the bathroom sink is really pretty in the ladies' room.
So there you go.
Really good Persian Kabobs. They easily rival Famous Kabob for good yummy yums, and the price is right.
Me: 15 bucks for meal and salad
PF: 15 bucks for filet mignon kabob
Cuke salad: ~2.99 for a very generous portion
bonus: super kid friendly and clean.
Pretty great! -

First off....I am a kabob snob. I am of middle eastern descent and my grandmother, in my opinion, makes the best kabobs on the planet. Well, the best until i tried them here. Good thing she is computer illiterate.
Everything about this place is great. In the short time I have known about this place (3 weeks) I have eaten there 3 times. I started out with the standard beef kabobs but then i graduated to the completely addicting dark meat chicken kabobs. My latest creation, and i HIGHLY recommend it, is 1/2 dark meat chicken kabobs and 1/2 fillet mingon kabobs. Yikes.
Whenever i get up to the area i go there and i would recommend this place to anyone, even "non-ethnic food eaters."
The hummus was ok but not great. You may want to skip it because you are going to need the room for your main entree.
They have live music some nights which only adds to the allure of this place.Listed in: Best of Sactown, Kaboom? No, I said Kabob!

I've never eaten Persian food before until tonight so I can't compare Kolbeh Kabob to any other Persian places. I got the Chicken Sultani and they warned me verbally that the ground chicken portion was spicy. Well it wasn't. At all. I thought the entrée was relatively plain with only the meats and flavorless white rice.
The service was good, as has been said it was attentive without being annoying.
I've eaten much better for much less of different ethnic cuisine. -

You aren't likely to find a better Persian restaurant in the area. We almost missed out on this place, because it is so unassuming, located in an unattractive strip mall. Once you step inside, you are no longer in a strip mall, but in a nicely decorated restaurant with an authentic vibe.
It would be difficult to go wrong with a menu selection. If you aren't familiar with the cuisine, don't be afraid to experiment. Each item is adequately explained, as well as words can manage. You'll have plenty of food, but your meal will be greatly enhanced by adding a couple of the side dishes. They call them appetizers, but really they are meant to be eaten with the main course.
It's on the expensive side, but you'll be taking home enough food to have lunch the next day. I highly recommend you either choose a dish with barberries in the rice, or ask them to add them.
We tried the Persian pastries, simply because my wife wanted to have the full experience. Much as I love everything else on the menu, I could take or leave the desserts. Especially after stuffing myself on the main course. The Persian tea is good though.
I've tried Famous Kabob also. This is every bit as excellent, a little less expensive, and has a nicer ambience. -

Super tasty kabobs. I had the Cornish Hen Kabob (I can't remember the proper name for it) and it was perfect, very flavorful and juicy. The saffron rice is EXCELLENT. I love saffron rice but never make it (saffron is too damned expensive), so I let the nice folks there bring me a heaping portion with my kabob so I can promptly inhale it. They've also got lovely Persian tea.
I dragged my parents there for dinner. My pops, who is very reluctant to try new cuisine, got the lamb kabob and is still talking about it. I've made a convert out of him! It's a good place to bring groups, and they had a belly dancer there on Saturday. It's a bit far from downtown, but worth the drive for a nice evening with good food and friends. -

I have driven by this little restaurant literally hundreds of times! Little did I know what I was missing. Looking at the outside of the restaurant you would not expect to get the great food and service combined with a belly dancer on the weekends! I ordered the Kolbeh Kabob and my husband had a kabob combo with Kolbeh, Beef, and chicken. The portions were large. After the complementary pita and fresh herb appetizer, I took home more of my meal than I ate. The food was delicious! I have been to many different Mediterranean restaurants in many different cities... I would rate this one in my top 3 favorites of all times!

Appetizer of fresh herbs and feta (which you use to fill pita bread) was good. Belly dancer was fabulous! Main entrees were very plain - virtually no flavor. I had salmon & my husband had one of the beef kabobs. Again, both had no flavor. Not kidding. On the expensive side for what you get.

I have to throw in for Kolbeh Kabob! What a gem right in the heart of my hometown, Orangevale no less.
You have to be in the mood for something different, because this is by no means your standard American fair. The experience starts from the moment you enter. You are not expecting an exotic get a way in a strip mall next to a mini mart and across from Winco. The ambience is rich, the food is delicious....yet affordable!
They start you out with a basket of herbs, pita and feta cheese. American food is more hearty, this is more sensual. If you are there on a Friday or Saturday night you are treated to a live belly dancer. Beautiful and aluring, my seven year old was soon in love with our pretty hostess. When she threw down her veil to him he reluctantly agreed to get up and dance with her. It was very cute.
The food was what we came for so I have to say it was very good. I shared a sirloin kabob with my son. They bring out the dish with a generous portion of saffron rice and I got roasted tomato for my veggie. My husband ordred chicken in a walnut sauce. I tasted it, very unique and robust flavor. One that I find lingers in the brain prompting you to return for reassurance that was really as good as you remembered.
We did not have our college student with us last night. But we have taken him to Kolbeh before. As a vegetarian, he is a fan of Kolbeh as they have a very large vegetarian menu. -

YUM I love this place . I've been here twice and every time the service is consistently awesome, the chicken always perfectly cooked, not too dry, flavorful, and juicy.
Nice quiet place to spend sometime in. I highly recommend the white chicken kabob marinaded in the special house sauce. I tried to find out what the flavors were, but it's a house secret :(
Totally worth the drive. Please visit today! -

We love this place and have been many times over the last few years. It is great for dine in or takeout.
The service is friendly. I recommend the eggplant appetizer or any of the kebabs. If you have 4 or more, the "sultan's feast" is great fun.
This is a nice, locally owned restaurant with friendly service and very good food. Ignore the bitchy, negative reviews and please support this place, it is very good and different from the usual chain restaurants. -

Fantastic. Took our elderly parents and all of us enjoyed each dish that was ordered. 1 veggie, 1 lamb and 2 different chicken dishes. We also got the eggplant appetizer and the homemade ice cream. You have to get the ice cream. The waitress was terrific.

I LOVE this place! Very cute atmosphere, belly dancers, great food with fresh herbs, and good service.

This is a hidden gem in Orangevale. It doesn't look impressive on the outside but I think it is a very clean and respectable place inside. My date tried the beef kaboobs and I tried the veggie kaboobs. It was excellent. We also tried their homemade pistacho and rosemary water ice cream. It was unusual and good. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this place. I will definitely be returning.

I tried this place for the first time last night. The food was delicious!! My friend and I shared our entrees and both were delicious. We also had the pureed eggplant as an appetizer. I had the beef kabob and my friend had the spicy chicken kabob. For dessert, we tried the churro things and the pistachio ice cream (which was a little like eggnog cake mixed with pistachios and ice cream). We had a FANTASTIC waitress - Valerie. She was helpful and knowledgeable. She kindly answered all our many questions. I went on http://Restaurant.com and bought more gift certificates because I can't wait to go back. They have belly dancing on Fridays and Saturday nights.

This is the jewel in Orangeville, CA. Some of the best Persian food I have ever had. My husband and I found the place by accident while driving around with our two children and decided to go in and try it. I grew up on this kind of food and I love it. I have dined at many other restaurants with similar cuisine and until now had not found one in this area that I really loved.
It's located in a little strip of stores and is not easily seen from the street. There is a little convenience store next to it and I believe that it is owned by the same. The people there are super nice and very service oriented.
On the weekends they have live music and belly dancers. I don't know if they have entertainment during the week.
We ordered Chicken, Steak and Koobideh (Seasoned Ground Beef) Kabobs, Dolmeh, Kashke Bademjan (an eggplant dish), Humus, and Shirizi Salad, . Everything was fantastic. The chicken was juicy and tender, the steak kabobs were cooked to perfection and excellent. The Koobideh Kabobs have a great taste to them. The meals were served with bread. The rice had a great flavor to it. Everything was amazing. We all left very full and happy.
My two year old devoured the eggplant dish, salad and the Dolmeh along with his rice and chicken and some of the Koobideh Kabob.
We were lucky enough to experience the belly dancers and music they have on the weekends. It was really nice. The atmosphere is nice and casual. They were very kid friendly.
I will be going back for sure! -

Fair Oaks, CA
A group of girlfriends and I headed over here on Friday night to try something different. Located in the middle of an odd strip mall across the street from Winco, this little gem of a restaurant was easy to find. Parking was okay but could be a problem on a really busy night.
Our dinner reservations were for 8pm and we were seated right away and were able to sit and chat while waiting for the rest of our party. Once the rest showed up we were given menus and drinks. There was a belly dancer dancing around while we peered into the menu to make our dinner choices.
We started out by ordering some appetizers. I had some Dolem (stuffed grape leaves) and others ordered hummus, green salads, and shirazi salads. Then we ordered our entrees, I decided to go with the Bakhtiary which was a combination of chicken and rib eye marinated in a lemon pepper and skewered it was served with saffron rice.
After we ordered a large basket was brought out that was filled with pita bread, feta cheese, butter pats and filled with fresh mint and Thai basil. We were instructed to spread some feta on the pita bread and then fill with a combination of herbs and eat until our food was brought out. This combination was super tasty and fully enjoyed by almost our whole party.
Soon our appetizers were brought out. The Dolmen was very tasty, I shared with the table and was able to taste the other appetizers. I really liked the hummus it had a different flavor than what I was use to but it was wonderful. After we had finished our appetizers and the pita bread (more bread was requested and brought out right away) our entrees came out. My skewer was huge and very tasty. We were instructed to put the butter pats in our rice and mix it up and then sprinkle some sort of pepper blend generously over the rice and skewers. I finished everything on my plate it was so good. I also was able to try some of the chicken stew (walnut puree, pomegranate sauce and chicken) and it was very rich and very tasty, would be great on a gloomy day. Others in my party ordered vegetarian skewers, and chicken barg skewers. Everyone enjoyed their dinners and were talking about how great the food was.
A few of us ordered some dessert, I had a piece of baklava it was pretty good but not the best that I have ever had. The butter pecan ice cream was very tasty.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Our only complaint would be that the belly dancer had awful timing when asking people to dance, either right after they arrived and didn't yet have their barrings or right as they took a bite of food.
I will definitely be coming back again and have already told my parents about my experience and they are interested in trying it out. -

This place was a recommendation while visiting the Sacramento area. It's located in a small strip shopping center. Decor is nothing to publish in Architectural Digest however it is quaint and a great "date" destination. The service was excellent, the entertainment entertaining (live bellydancing)! A great place to have a get together with a group of friends or celebrate a birthday! I went for dinner and ordered the chicken kabobs with the rice Basmati - wonderful! Try the hot tea made with Rosewater.

My husband and I went here to check out some different food and try a new cuisine. We were in love with the table bread which was more of a pita with goats cheese and herbs. Very fresh. Our dinners were large and plenty to have leftovers the next day. The rice was delicious and the service was great. Very pleased :)

I hope more and more people discover this wonderful restaurant. It is in an area that probably doesn't eat a lot of ethnic foods including Persian , so let it be noted their food is well worth the drive! We have tried most of the chicken dishes and all are excellent. The sauteed eggplant (baba ganoush) is good and we enjoy the basket of pitas, cheese and greens and the jar of sumac to sprinkle on the food. Service is great also. Please come out and support this unassuming restaurant it rivals any in Sacramento
