My sister and I took her kids to this children's museum yesterday. We have never been there before and did not know what to expect. The staff is very nice, friendly and great with kids. The place is very cool for the kids. There are different sections/areas you go for different experiences. I really don't want to give too much away - if you have kids, you should definitely check it out.
Also, I love the fact that they have special activities different days, area to have lunch or snack at and a shop! Great times!!!! -

this is a great place for kids to experience play in many different areas. My grandson loves cranes and was delighted to sit on the crane and move the bucket. The water area is great fun and the aprons help to keep the kids dry . He loved the grocery story with the shopping cart, products and checkout. The musical area had so many wonderful drumming pieces that he enjoyed.
My biggest challenge was the crowd and the mix of the older children with the younger. My grandson is two years old and the older children that charged into the water area started grabbing things from the little kids. The people caring for the kids were way to busy on cell phones to be aware of safety concerns and their responsibility of reminding the kids to share.
For the most part the staff was great, but at times seemed to hover and were very emphatic that things be put back in place, which seemed ridiculous when they were all just standing around. I get the concept that kids need to clean up but a little help at time would have been appreciated. -

What a train wreck.
I made the trek from the city to visit this place because I heard so many great things about it. I suppose it has some nice installations but it's so overrun that kid's only have 15-30 seconds at a station before another kid is pushing his way in. If the place was twice as big it might work.
And why are parents and kids so much more ill-behaved in the burbs than in the city? Is it because the burbs are full of people trying to get away from other people? -

my husband and i took our 2 girls (ages 3 and 1) to this museum over thanksgiving break. we live in los angeles, but the in laws live in glenview so we wanted to check it out. i was hoping that it would be less crowded during lunchtime, but it was not the case at all! it was very crowded and a bit overwhelming at first.
some kids have NO manners and the parents are just as rude too. but once you overlook that and avoid them, this museum is awesome. both our girls loved the different themes and did not want to leave to go to the next section. even though the younger one was a bit too young to fully take advantage, she did enjoy touching and seeing a variety of things she normally wouldn't touch/see.
if we lived in the chicagoland area, we would definitely be coming here a lot. -

I've been a member of Kohl's for 5 years now. So overall, obvisously I'm a fan but there are def. some plusses and minuses!
Plus:
- Great place for kids to play, lots of little areas.
- Join their facebook page for updates on exhbit openings; they will often post when there are non-field trip and anticipated light-crowd days. :)
- Outdoor exhibit has often been closed when I've gone.
- Staff are continually present refreshing and straightening up the various areas.
- Spend the extra $20 for an extended membership and you can also go to museums such as Navy Pier, DuPage (Naperville) and Milwaukee for FREE. Worth it if you like to change it up!
- Walk to the Glen. Have seriously left hubby w/kids and walked the shops over there, because my hubby thought up of it.
- Lots of restrooms, family restrooms near the cafe.
Minus:
- Hard to keep track of more than one kid if they want to be in DIFFERENT areas.
- Can get very crowded.
- Cosi Cafe is not cheap, replaced the unique and awesome Kim & Scott's Pretzel Shop.
- As I said we've been a member for 5 years, things are starting to show their age. Hoping this is addressed soon.
- Large age-range means younger kids really have to be watched closely so they don't get trampled on. -

What a great place for kids to rampage around with a little of everything for everyone. We just celebrated my son's 2nd birthday here and had a blast. Thank you again to the wonderful staff and the opportunity for 15 little kids to run, jump, crawl and have a great time!!
For a birthday party here, it is free admission for up to 15 kids (ages 1 and up) and all the accompanying adults. Parking is free and you can bring in your own food (no warming devices though and hot beverages) unless you want to have Cosi cater your party.1 Previous Review: Show all »

We have a reciprocal membership and visit many children's museums for this reason. This museum is not quite technology-based like Betty Brinn in Madison is, but there appears to be more exhibits based on every day things.
Check out their website for a complete list of exhibits, as well as a calendar of temporary ones. They have more than what Dupage Children's Museum offers, however, both are completely different from one another. You just have to pay them a visit. -

great place for kids. prices are a bit steep, but a great place for kids 2-5. any younger and older would be a waste of time and energy. birhtday parties here are a ip off for the food you get. outdoor is a bit lacking, but indoor has a lot to do. they sanitize toys all the time. Overall, a clean and pleasant place for toddlers

My son started coming here around age 1.5, and it was pretty overwhelming for him at that age, although he loved the grocery store simulation. He's 4 now, and he loves coming. In addition to the permanent exhibits and rotating special exhibits, they also have an outside play area in good weather. Additionally, sometimes while we're visiting, there will be an announcement that they have a bug zoo, or visiting dogs and cats from a nearby shelter, or other special events. I highly recommend you bring your kids.

I am happy to report that the Kohl just blew me away after a recent visit! I wish I could move it to Michigan so my kids could go all the time.
We were in town and looking for someplace to entertain the kids while my husband caught the World Cup finale with a friend at a nearby bar. The Kohl was reasonably priced (with free parking -- yay!) and got great reviews here, so we decided to check it out.
Our sons (18 months and 3 years) loved it from the minute we walked in. The sponsors' names are on the wall behind little sliding doors that you can open and close. It seems like such a small touch, but I think the kids would have been happy just messing with the little doors the entire time! It took quite a bit of coaxing to get them to keep walking ... which led us to the Car Care Room.
Wow, was that ever a hit! There's a giant loop that you can send cars down, a toy car that you can ride in (with an open hood where you can "work on" the car), a steering wheel that shows you how turning the wheel makes tires change directions, etc. Again, that alone could have kept the kids entertained the whole time we were there ...
But wait -- there's more! The museum also featured:
* A toy grocery store, with tiny shopping carts, pretend fruit, and boxes and cans your kids can "buy." There are also little cash registers and even conveyor belts that you move with a hand crank.
* A toy restaurant, where kids can make "sandwiches," ring them up, serve customers, etc.
* A doll nursery. My boys weren't too interested in that, but I did get the younger one to put a baby to bed and tuck him in. (His big brother gave the baby a goodnight kiss.)
* A vet clinic, where you can look at X-rays, use a stethoscope and brush stuffed animals and give them shots, etc.
* A water-play room, with boats, pinwheels that move when you squirt water at them, and lots of other cool stuff. Be sure to use the smocks!
* A train set (a big favorite with my boys, though there was much consternation over who had which train ...)
* A music room, with different instruments to explore. The xylophone was the clear favorite here.
* An art room, with crayons, Legos (on a light table -- kind of cool), pipe cleaners, sand boxes and more.
* An "outdoor" area, with toy boats, a "river," etc.
* An actual outdoor play area, with spinning cups, climbing structures, a giant turtle statue, a tunnel and a play house.
There was TONS more stuff, but what I listed would have been more than worth the price of admission. We could easily have made an entire day here, if the baby hadn't started getting tired and cranky. (Hmmm ... maybe they need a nap room!)
The museum was overall in great shape -- very clean, with everything in working order. (I know at our local kids' museum, it seems like half the exhibits are usually broken.) It seemed like most of the exhibits were for younger kids, like toddlers and pre-schoolers. Kids up to age 8 or so might be entertained, as well, but probably not for as long. We went on a summer Sunday afternoon and didn't find it excessively busy (i.e., not utter chaos).
In short, we adored the Kohl, and I'm very sorry it's so far away from us! If it were close by, I'd have bought a family membership already. -

My girlfriend threw her kids bday party here. What a neat little place for kids to explore. How often can my 2yr push her own shopping cart in Dominick's and be a veterinarian all in the same day?! Very cool place. Perhaps I might even throw my own party here for my little ones next bday!!

I had my daughter's 1 year birthday party here and it was a hit. We had about 21 kids ages ranged from 1 year to 9 years old and there was something for everyone.
The staff are very nice and helpful when you are having a party there. Just a couple of tips:
- The 1 hour and 45 minutes you get the room for goes by VERY fast. It is imperative that you bring people to help you set up and breakdown. They charge you $20 for every 5 minutes you are in the room after your alloted time so be careful.
-You are extremely busy during that hour and 45 minutes, ask someone to handle the picture taking/ video duties, I did not get as many as I would have liked as you are rushing around quite a bit.
- Sing happy birthday and do the cake thing first. We ate lunch first then 1/2 the kids ran out to play and we had find them all to do the happy birthday song.
-They have large carts available for you to bring your supplies in, have someone drive you to the front and run in and get one, it makes your life a lot easier.
Overall a wonderful experience, wish you could pay more and extend the room by a half hour or so. -

I really can't add much more than the other excellent reviews, so I'll just reiterate some points:
The toddler (and younger) areas are pretty bland, though if you have an older child (3+,) they'll act as efficient holding pens for the younger sibs.
You can't eat in the museum proper, but you can eat your own food in the Cosi that is attached to the museum. I can't comment on the prices / menu compared to other Cosi's; but at $5.99, the kids pizza meal seems like a reasonable deal. (The mini-hot dog at the same price? Not so much.)
The art studio changes the main project every two weeks, so while kids undoubtably will have their favorite areas - this one at least changes frequently.
There is an area for a travelling exhibit, though these can be hit or miss in quality.
When the outdoor area is open (presumably spring-fall,) they have a changing schedule of activities, much like the art studio.
If you are thinking of getting a membership (and if you have 2+ kids in the target age group, you should,) spend the extra $20 for the "plus" membership. It gives you reciprocal membership to other Children's museums around the country, INCLUDING the one at Navy Pier. Pays for itself in one visit... -

I bought a family membership for the Children's Museums since we've been taking my son to the one at Navy Pier a lot. After having visited this location I'm wondering why...it's SO much better than the one at Navy Pier!
First-off there are a LOT more hands-on displays and activities, all suitable for even the youngest children. It's less like a "museum" and more like a giant play-place! It's on one level and well laid-out.
My son usually spends most of his time in the waterworks display at the Navy Pier location, sadly because this is the most hands-on type of display they have there. The waterworks display at this location is FAR superior, much more interesting and engaging in every way. While he spent a significant amount of time here, I was so pleased to see him take a significant interest in other displays as well. He LOVED the music room. It was fun to sit with him and discuss each of the music-related activities such as recording, harmony, etc. My personal favorite spot in the museum is here: a very small room that plays techno and world music while a trippy image of your body's shadow dances on the wall along with you. It's like a mini-rave!
TIP: bring an extra set of clothes so your little one can fully enjoy the waterworks display!Listed in: A little something for the…

I went here with my sister and niece today and it was pretty enjoyable. Lot's of kids running around and the upsetting thing is that not alot of parents seemed to be watching their own children.
My niece was super entertained and she liked the areas.
I will say that there were tons of different activites for children of all ages to be entertained with.
Go and check it out. -

The secret really is to go during the weekdays, never the weekends! We had a much better experience this time as it wasn't as crowded at the Saturday that we first visited. This gives you and your child the opportunity to experience the whole entire museum, explore at leisure and avoid possible issues with kids who never learned to share or take turns.
On our last visit, we also tried the pretzel cafe. Yum!
I love that they offer a kid sized counter complete with stools, healthy and organic alternatives...and that pizza stuffed pretzel is just too damn good!Listed in: Kid Culture

I grew up going to the original Wilmette location. All you wanted was for someone to have their birthday party at Kohl's! And as a teenager I volunteered there. It was good times all 'round.
I think its great they were able to expand to a better-equipped facility! And I wish them luck.Listed in: Childhood

This is a wonderful place to visit for the kids. The age group that this museum focuses on is from birth to 8. The hands on exhibits and learning rooms allows for the wide range of activities.
Who didn't want to play grocery store when they were young? Or pretend they were servers at a restaurant. There is a Dominick's store equipped with carts and registers. A Potbelly Sandwich Works store where kids make there own sandwiches, serve the customers, and clean up. There are computers that the kids can play with or have stories read to them.
So many activities to choose from I found that my kids like to do different things on certain days.
Glenview residents are free on Wednesdays from1pm - 5pm.
Don't quote me on this but I think Wilmette residents are extended this offer as well.
We love this gem in Glenview.
After our learning journey comes to an end my kids and I head off to the pretzel eatery, Kim & Scott's Gourmet Pretzel Bakery & Twisting Cafe. That will be my next review:)Listed in: Glenview, not just a sleepy…

It doesn't get any better than this.
Yeah, it can get crowded. Rainy days and during winter vacation are the worst times to go. Expect lots of kids with runny noses (ew). But most of the time it is manageable and there is just SO MUCH to do there.
Our new favorite this summer was the outdoor area. They have a cute "treasure hunt" map that you can grab and find the statues around the path. There is also a newish spider web climbing structure and these spinning cups... it's all fun and games til someone gets too dizzy and barfs everywhere.
The big hits indoors are the face painting mirror, water room, Potbelly's sandwich shop and the vet. The best thing is that there is something for every age group so all the kids can have fun. It's easy to spend a whole day here without even noticing.
They think they're sneaky putting a gift shop RIGHT at the front door so that when you enter and leave all you hear is "CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST GO BUY SOMETHING?!?! CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST GO LOOK???". Ummm... I forgot my purse in the car... however, if you are feeling the need to shop, they have great educational gifts in there.
I know I shouldn't... but I love that darn pretzel restaurant. Grilled cheese pretzels? Mmmmmm... -
Review from Alan R.
We live just outside the Glen. My son loves to be active and run around. In the summer this means the park, but we needed a place for him to run with the weather getting colder. We decided to get a membership and he went four times in the first nine days of the membership.
There is something to do for children (and the kids in all of us) with a variety of interests and ages. My son loves the music room. It gives kids a chance to experiment and play with a variety of musical instruments. You can record your own song and then play it back immediately afterward.
A maze, mini Pot Belly's and Dominick's are other highlights.
If your little one gets hungry during the trip to the Kohl or afterward, a Kim and Scott's Pretzel Cafe is located at the front of the museum. -

This is a very nice Children's museum. Admission is inexpensive and all of the exhibits are of very good quality and interesting to kids. They also boast free parking...and lockers with a 25 cent deposit that you get back at the end...this is a very nice place indeed.
Kids I've gone with have enjoyed the vet's office, Potbelly Sandwich stand and the Dominick's grocery store....oh! and the Prairie house....and water works and...and...and....
Anyway, this place is a bit of a hike from the city, and it gets very crowded on the weekends. I also don't think that it has very convenient hours...same as most museums though. I'd recommend this place for kids up to age 8...most of the kids here when I went were between 1-6.Listed in: Have a kid?

My kids love going here! We have been going now for over five years and they never get sick of it. Their favorite is always the market and the music room. They love it all and it's much easier to take them now that they are older because the place gets packed. (especially on weekends) They love the pretzel place inside and I can't forget the Art Room which has new activities every time you go! Super fun place!!

A really good place to bring the young ones! So many things they can see, touch, and experience from a walk-thru car wash to a simulated grocery store. Also like the small crawling areas for the young ones that can't walk yet. I will definitely bring my daughter back here again!

Great place for kids. I grew up myself going to the old place in Wilmette. Then had kids of my own, and then frequented this place when they were young. Even had a bday party there which was great.
I think I am nostalgic for the old place...but with that said...the new place is bigger and offer different things to play with. I miss some things from the old place, but think the new place is just as good.
Only downside is after about 8yrs. old this place has nothing for kids who are a little older. As a result, i have bored out of their mind siblings who hate to go here when we are taking our younger child. Even at the only place, I made a suggestion of adding in something for the "older kids", like a rock climbing wall or something that they would like. (A mini tv studio? SOMETHING other than the baby stuff they offer) I've been to other children's museums around the US (thanks to our membership that gets you into other places for free) and have seen how other places incorporate a few "older" kids things to keep them busy. I wish they offered that.
Nice, clean place...fun...but honestly, my kids would spend longer playing at the old facility, than they do at this one. Nice ideas, but something about it, doesn't capture my kids imaginations the same way. -

What a great place! Had my Lili-P's 1st birthday party there & EVERYONE ranging in age from 1 to 85 loved it. IV loved it so much that he asked to have his 7th birthday party there. There is something for everyone. The party room time slot was a bit small (felt a bit rushed to get out of there on time), but otherwise a GREAT party experience.

A considerable-sized museum for children, you see a lot of families coming here daily (especially on the weekends). Came here for a field trip, and my most favorite was the grocery section (c'mon, who doesn't like grocery shopping and playing around with the plastic food look-alikes?!).

I agree that kids ages 3-8 will really enjoy this. The interactive exhibits are great for kids who thrive on hand-on exploring. They also have a few designated infant sections where crawlers can be let loose; my 15 month old liked it, but she'll really appreciate this place in a couple of years. Good gift shop, too!

We had an amazing birthday party experience for my 3 year old this weekend! I have to say the hour and a half goes by very quickly! The people at the front desk were very efficient in getting everyone to the party room. Paul helped out a great deal in getting our room set up. He supplied tape for decorations and a lighter for the candles, which we completely forgot to bring. We loved the room and the kids all had a great time! I can't think of a better place to have a birthday party for the kids that they will all enjoy!

Best Museum by FAR that I have even visited. I understand this is a children's place to have fun and roam, but I have never wanted to be a kid again as bad as when I visited this little gem. There is just so much to do...you can go the Potbelly's and make fake sandwiches, or visit the maze of the senses. Maybe you would like to travel outside and weave strips of cloth through the gate and make art or sit on the large mosaic turtle mini. Love it people. Its amazing and for the very cheap $6.50 fee, totally worth the drive out to the 'burbs. Healthy cafe, great giftshop and extremely exciting museum space.

We had my daughter's birthday party here in 2006 when she was turning 5. It was perfect. They provide you with a room for the kids to keep their stuff and to have pizza and cake in. There are so many things to do here that we literally had to drag the kids out! They loved the make-believe restaurant, grocery store, dress-up, and water-room! I would definitely recommend it for birthday parties!

I don't get the 5-star ratings at all. The building is cool, but otherwise, it is just so-so. The water room looks so fun but there's not actually much to do in it. The whole place is like that. . .looks better than it is. My kids get bored of it pretty quickly, which is unusual for them.
Biggest complaint is that they let in tons of under-supervised school groups that make this place hell. Best time to avoid that problem is weekday afternoons. -

First off, yes, the museum is probably best suited for kids ages 3-6, but we took our daughter (21 months) anyway because the weather was bad and we needed to get out of the house. She loved it. The exhibits are great, the place is clean and the parking is free. And to get her out of the house and interacting with other kids is priceless to us, so much so that we did the membership for about $100. We plan to go at least once a month, and as she gets older, I think she'll enjoy it even more.

disappointed..this place is a zoo, horrible use of space. they would have been better off keeping the other location open as well and this place. I think its a fun place when the kids can get in to play, and its a total germ trap. Bring lots of purel, your own snack, and go either late in the afternoon (4-5) or early when it opens as your kids will be waiting in line for everything and you wont find parking. I hate this place overall because its always f-ing packed and the parents dont police their kids.

Yep, you have to go on weekdays or really early or it becomes a zoo. We can easily spend 2-3 hrs playing and learning here. I live in the city and schlep all the way out here because it is still cheaper than Chicago Childrens Museum. And get a membership, it pays for itself. Love the grocery store and water area. Be prepared for tantrums when you try to get the kids to leave.

This might be nitpicky on Yelp, but I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars. The dh was off for a couple days, so I suggested we take the toddlers to Kohl's Children's Museum. I am so happy I didn't attempt to take them on my own. I would have been pulling the 2 y.o. off of the train while the 3 y.o. was ordering a sandwich from the mini-Potbelly's (way far away from each other...)
This place is great, and we even got a membership on our way out. HOWEVER.... get there when it opens. Members can get in at 9am. The general public 9:30am. We got there at 10:30am and though there was plenty of parking, the place was jam packed freaking crazy with a bajillion school kids. The busdrivers must have gone shopping at the Disneyesque shopping center just south of the museum... Seriously though, it was like walking into Yakzie's at 11am on Opening Day when everyone's been there drinking since 8am. Still fun but a bit disconcerting...
There are many, many things that young children can explore - water, music, cars, mini grocery, mini restaurant, and much more. I did like that everything is on one level, as opposed to the Chicago Children's Museum on Navy Pier. Both places are great to bring the little ones, but major bonus that Kohl's has free parking. $20 to park at Navy Pier can get steep (though maybe they validate?)
Our family was working on very little sleep so we didn't stay long, but we'll definitely be returning. Always great to find a new, fun place to bring the tykes. -

Chicago, IL
This is a great place for the second grade and under set. There is a lot to do and the kids have a great time; however, I would call it an activity center rather than a museum because I'm not sure that anyone actually learns anything. There is a long "street" with activities on either side for kids with varied interest. The most popular is the little grocery store where children get to push carts around and pick groceries and check them out. My daughter's favorite spot is the doll area. Get there early and be prepared to spend some time (three hours is hitting the limit I would think). If you want to eat, I would suggest going to the Glen (I think) area, just north of the museum as there are plenty of choices. There is a Cosi in the museum, but I've never been a fan of the place.
FInally: there is a fun water activity area so bring an extra change of clothes in case your little-one gets wet.
