    Must repeat!!

Excellent pad Thai, spring rolls, yellow beef curry, and chicken satay.  The service was good, waiters friendly, and obviously a popular lunch hangout.

While I generally will avoid sub-4 star restaurants in the Bay (call me a snob, but I've found that even most 4 star restaurants have been mediocre here), it was almost 9pm on a Thursday night, we were without a car, and my friend was hungry, somewhat broke, and also in heels. Koh Samui managed to fit the bill, so we trekked the one block to get there, glanced over a well-rounded menu, and ordered the Miracle Duck and Basil Gai for entrees, two sides of rice, and a green tea creme brulee for dessert.

Overall, everything was just okay, with nothing that stood out. The duck curry had good flavor overall (a bit sweet, with a bit of kick), but the texture of the duck was a bit unusual, and more akin to chicken. The basil gai was even less interesting: a simple stir-fried ground chicken dish that was a bit on the sweet side as well. And the creme brulee was a bit disappointing because the green tea flavor was not noticeable at all.

Service was very friendly, while the decor was interesting (very thematic, if any anything, which can sometimes err on the side of being too touristy). Total bill came out to $57 after tax and tip, which was probably a bit more than we were aiming for (they charge $2-3 dollars for a bowl of rice). All in all, not a bad Thai restaurant, but given the other options available to you in the city, there are much, much better places for your money (Ler Ros and Basil Thai, for example).

As an aside - one will notice that the restaurant is actually up on the second floor. For those in wheelchairs, they have a wheelchair lift near the entrance that you can self-operate to get up there.

I give this restaurant a sold 3 stars. This Thai restaurant has pretty solid food. I wouldn't say its the best Thai I've ever had, but for a quick bite at lunch it's not bad. Speaking of lunch, during the week you'd best go before 12:15pm when the lunch crowds converge. Otherwise you will be waiting for 20+ minutes for a table.

They don't make their Thai tea themselves, which I thought was a little strange for a Thai restaurant. As a result they dont always have hot Thai tea.

So eh... Not bad, I'll go back one day.

Attention: Do NOT order online here!!!  When you get there to pick up your order, you will be waiting forever!  I took advantage of a Living Social Takeout deal.  I put in my order soon after the restaurant opened - which, by the way, was at 11:10am, a good chunk of time before peak lunch time.  The soonest the restaurant allows for pickup is in "about 1 hour."  I knew that word "about" was a red flag, but I went for it anyway.

Having even called 20 min. beforehand to make sure they had my order and that it would be ready ("yes it should be ready in 20 minutes."), I got to the restaurant shortly before 12:10pm.  The hostess at the front desk checked on my order and cheerfully said "it'll just be a minute."  15 minutes later, I'm still standing around watching hot food being whisked to all the dine-in customers in front of me.  Excuse me?  The restaurant should have planned for my order since I placed it over an hour ago!!

This is to Koi Samui management:  Hello!  If your chefs can't handle online orders, then don't go offering the option to your customers!!  I've had pleasant dine-in experiences here before, but this terrible takeout experience cancels out all those other experiences.  Not only that, but you decide to raise the prices of the food for the Living Social customers - yes, I noticed - about 44% higher.  Very uncool!!!

Oh, and by the way, there's a takeout section adjacent to the dining area which is set up like a buffet.  But no, if you made an online order, you do not get service in the takeout section.  Another smart move, management!

The only reason I did not give this place 1 star was that the food was actually really tasty...once I finally got it!  Also, the hostess was very nice and kept checking on my food every few minutes.  I know it wasn't her fault, so I don't blame her.  I won't be coming back, though, after this experience.  Good job, Koi Samui management.  You just lost a customer.

Visited this place before a Giants game when another place we went to was closing up suggested it. Came to this place just in time for the happy our specials at the bar. Most items were $5-6 dollars each. Had some Pad Thai, Pad se Ew and some other appetizers. It was well worth trying and service was quick.

This is our mostly frequented thai place and I've got to say, after several times here it is sad to say that the only really great dish here is the chicken pumpkin curry. Everything else lacks authentic thai flavors, are too greasy, or just missing something...

Most of the dishes I've tried other than the chicken pumpkin curry taste too fusion for my liking. (Although I do enjoy the spring rolls that come with the lunch special) The stir fried noodles like pad see ew and pad khee mao are lacking and really greasy/oily. The last time I ordered pad khee mao with extra veggies and beef, I found myself with shiny lips (from grease) and an unsatisfied hunger for spice and thai flavors.

Overall, a pretty nice place for lunch. It gets fairly crowded, but getting seated is not a problem. Prices are also decent. Again, get the curry! One of the few things that won't leave you craving for real thai cuisine.

Incredibly disappointed with the service! My entree arrived with only 2 of the 4 main ingredients and the server refused to do anything to fix it.

Specifically, I ordered an item on the menu that said it included prawns, green peppers, and mushrooms on a bed of asparagus. It arrived as prawns with 2 asparagus (not really a "bed") and it was missing the green peppers and mushrooms.

I told our server Masha (pointed at the item in the menu) and she just smiled and said there was nothing she could do about it. What? I didn't want to cause a scene (it was just mushrooms & peppers after) but really? Once I ordered a beet salad that arrived beet-less but the server quickly gave me a side of beets and I was happy - easy fix!

There were other issues too but the other main problem was Masha also double charged us for our wine! Fortunately, unlike my entree, she was able to fix her mistake after we flagged her down and pointed out.

    Super bummed!

The crispy tofu was delicious and this place has a nice atmosphere, and friendly and efficient service. But I can only give three stars because the BBQ chicken was nothing special, and more importantly, prices are outrageous for most of the menu. Some items are literally double what you'd expect to pay at a comparable Thai place. I don't plan on going back.

This was a cool surprise - a really great happy hour special!

I was here on a Friday night and enjoyed a very good happy hour of drinks and food at a very reasonable price.  We started off the meal with a couple of cocktails with Thai liqueur, which were good.  We also shared Pad Thai and Bangkok BBQ Chicken - everything was pretty good.  All in all, we had two drinks and two decent portions of plates for about $15 - that's really good.

While the food isn't the best Thai food in the city, it's still pretty good.  Considering the price-point during happy hour, it's great.

Koh Samui caters to the upper-middle class American with a stereotypical white person palette.  Why?

    1) Thai iced tea is way too sweet!  I may as well drink the can of sweetened condensed milk alone!
    2) Peanut sauce that accompanies the spring rolls is way too sweet!  Not to mention it was served separated, as you would find in a failed emulsion -- a peanutty paste on top, a grossly sweet sauce underneath that was reminiscent of that orange-colored sweet sauce at Chinese restaurants for dipping those fried wonton strips into.
    3) Ambiance: the dining room is pretty nice looking and clean.  We all know Asians don't care about ambiance...
    4) Portion size: small!  My curry came in a square bowl that is similar in size to a standard rice bowl.  Really??!  That pathetic portion of curry + rice costs $11.50??!

And the worst part: My pumpkin and chicken red curry ($11.50) had 2 cubes of pumpkin in it.  Yes, 2.  Is that really enough to constitute a pumpkin curry??  Perhaps I should mention that the chicken red curry costs $9.50, so does this mean that each cube of pumpkin costs $1?!  To make matters even worse, the chicken was overcooked and tough.  It's really too bad, because I actually liked the flavor of the red curry.  I just wish they put in more of the advertised pumpkin and didn't overcook the chicken.

Hrm... what to say... things change. I am disappointed with Monkey togo now. It is sad how you up the prices and lower the portions to make a buck. I went here yesterday and ordered the two item combo with my co-worker. It is sad that the reason why the line was taking so long was because the person packing our containers was measuring the items prior to putting it into the container. He would take a scoop of yellow curry only to shake off the excess meat or veggies. If you picture the 3 compartment containers (two small ones on top and the big one which contains rice). They only fill it up those small cups 2/3 or less....

The garlic beef was really tough to eat (not tender at all) and the chicken yellow curry... well let's just say where was the chicken? All-in-all the quality of this place is slowly going downhill.

I was very pleased with my take-out order for Pumpkin curry, served with brown rice.
It arrived very quickly in less than a half hour, and was bathed in a silky red curry sauce with basil, bell pepper, and a bit of spice.

The portion of my meal was more than filling, and I remembered having more than enough for left overs the next day.

I'm not big into curries, but the harvest squash variety does better to befit the soupy mouth-feel experienced when once slurps on a curry.  Maybe because Pumpkin resonates my childhood experience as I grew up with seasonal squashes in our backyard, and laced into my mother's cooking throughout the fall.

    mMm Mmm Delicious.

AMONG THE WORST THAI FOOD IN SAN FRANCISCO

Went to lunch with a group of ten people. Service was extremely slow. Food was terrible and the worst were Pad Thai (how can you ruin this dish?), Pad Kee Mao (not even a hint of spicy) and Pad See Ew (which was so bland, we couldn't even taste the see ew=soy sauce). When we compained about the Pad See Ew and asked them to redo it, they returned with a tiny portion and said that since we had tasted some, they were only giving a tiny portion. To be honest, it looked like they just refried the portion we didn't eat which is gross because it would've gone back in the wok that cooks everyone else's meals.

This place is decent and affordable given the other Asian food selections near AT&T park. It's slightly better for curry dishes than the Ozone Thai, but the soups at Ozone are much better. This is a safe bet if you've got a business lunch since there's a decent selection.

"Monkey" as my office calls it, has two things going for it: their to-go lunch bar and their happy hour.

The lunch bar is open from noon-2 and for $8-9 you can get a heaping box of rice, tofu pad thai, and spicy or sweet basil chicken. They have other selections too in smaller quantities, but these are the staples and they are *good* (although the "spicy" basil chicken can stand to be a lot hotter - I think they accounted for people unused to Thai food).

The happy hour is really good; you get a seat at a stylish modern bar, really cheap cocktails, beer and wine, and a chance to hit on the uppity British bartender if he spares a look your way. On a good day he can tell you some pretty entertaining stories.

For dinner or their full lunch menu, though, the food is wildly overpriced and woefully small-portioned. You'd be better off going up a block to Chili Lemon Ginger where the food is cheaper, more delicious and comes in bigger portions.

Best Thai food EVER.  I eat a lot of Thai food and this is wonderful!  It was really like gourmet Thai food.  The flavors were amazingly complex and the food was very rich without being too heavy.  I had the Mango beef and the Tom Ka soup and my gf had the seafood firecracker in yellow curry.  Just really really good.  The service was friendly and very efficient, without being bothersome.  I recommend this pace to anyone in SF!!

We were at this place today. We had to wait 25 mins just for the waiter to show up. The restaurant was not packed .. but busy. Either ways .. 25 mins at lunch time, during a working day?
Worse .. one plate at our table . had left over food on it (hardened, meaning old food). When we told the waiter about this .. he just shrugged and asked" Do you want to order". No apology .. he didn't really care. We walked out.

Horrible service. Poor attitude. Last time I'm going here.

Been here for lunch and dinner, and recently checked out their lunch take-out counter.

Service for dine-in is average and sometimes it's slow, especially during the busy lunch hours. It gets loud in there, and I think this place is much suited for group dining, rather than having lunch solo or with another person. However, dinner seemed more calm and less busy.

I've found ordering from the take-out counter more efficient and wallet-friendly. $6.95 for 1-item with steamed rice ($7.95 for 2-item) is a deal for lunch especially in this area. If you come around or before Noon, they'll still have a lot of items to choose from. Overall, food is decent and it satisfies my Thai cravings whenever they kick in.

Great place for Happy Hour, especially before Giants games: $2.50 drafts, $3.00 well cocktails.

-1 star for the goldfish floating belly up in the fishbowl. D:

Ambiance:  This place is very modern.  For a Thai restaurant, it's very buttoned up as well.  I found the front bar to be amply stocked and the decor to be impressively chic.  Like Jon C. said, the area outside of the restaurant isn't necessarily the best -- but I enjoyed that the windows were large enough to see the foot traffic outside (who doesn't like people watching?) and vice versa.

Service:  Very friendly!  They also know the menu backwards and forwards.

Food:  ZOMG!  TRY the calamari!  I uploaded a picture... it was soooo good!  We paired it with some of their signature cocktails and we almost filled up too much before dinner.  It was still really, really good.

TIP:  With enough advanced planning, you can easily get a group of 10 in here.  WE DID.

TIP:  TRY one of their signature cocktails.  Really good!  And you get a little plastic monkey in the place of a tropical umbrella. :)

After a year, we're going our separate ways!

The good: decent Thai fusion, lots of choices, nice presentation, pretty waitresses.

The bad: pricey for what you get, spotty delivery service, take-out got increasingly bad.

We have given this place PLENTY of business over the past year, and we have
forgiven the times that one of the 7 entrees ordered had been forgotten.
We have also forgiven the fact that sometimes they deliver and sometimes they don't..
which is really crappy because they still show up on grubhub on the days they don't.
I suppose that's the price to pay for a pretty convenient location..

Unfortunately yesterday was the last straw T_T
I called my 3-entree order at 11:15 and was told it would have been ready in 20 minutes.
I arrived around 11:35, and accidentally put 22 minutes in the meter.
I was told they were still finishing up my order.. fair enough, I have waited a few minutes before.
Place was deserted, and there were at least half a dozen employees.
After 20 minutes, I'm wondering where my order is because my meter is about to expire,
and I'm told by the waiter that I should probably add more money to the meter O_O
Really?! I thought he was kidding, but alas he was not..
At 12:06 I get my food and I ask whether they can give me a discount or a comp spring roll for the wait
and I'm told "oh, we don't do that"

After waiting for 50+ minutes for a tiny order for THE SECOND TIME IN A MONTH,
stay assured that neither I nor any of my coworkers will be coming again.
There are too many Thai options in the area to get away with bad service.
Forgive you for this? Oh, we don't do that.

    Farewell, Koh Samui!

I was excited to try this place out as it is close to home and who wouldn't want to go somewhere that has the word "monkey" in the title.

Sadly, I was disappointed.  Food was so-so (I'm not a huge Osha fan, and I think their food is leaps and bounds better) and is pretty over priced (we had a Groupon and still felt like we over paid).  Not to be all--I've been to Thailand before and had authentic Thai food and this doesn't measure up to other fare you can get in SF--on you, but I have, and it doesn't.

The happy hour list seemed worth checking out but I doubt we will try it.  There are just too many other good places in town that we'd like to go back to first.

Ever since I've moved to San Francisco, I have always wanted to have dinner at Koh Samui & The Monkey. This neighborhood gem is located in the SOMA district and has a notorious reputation for having the best Thai food in San Francisco. I'm surprised it is not known as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco. With it's dim lighting and romantic ambiance it definitely fits the description.

Between a party of three, we ordered 5 dishes: Shrimp Pad Thai, Pumpkin Curry, Mango Catfish, Crispy Soft Shell Crab and the Grilled Lamb to die for. My favorite dishes were the Pumpkin Curry and the Shrimp Pad Thai. You can always tell if a Thai restaurant is amazing by how delicious their Pad Thai dish is!

My only disappointment was that my Pumpkin Curry came in bowl instead of an actual pumpkin. However, it was a delicious meal nonetheless! If I lived closer to the SOMA district, I would definitely be a frequent diner.

A pretty restaurant with white tablecloths and lots of art - and quite a menu selection.

Not crowded for a Tuesday dinner, though the bar was pretty full due to happy hour.  We called ahead for a table ( they block out the core dinner hours on opentable for some reason, even when they are barely full ) and were seated quite quickly.

They offer a full list of some creatively named cocktails, though they might not be to everyone's liking, and a good variety of beer on draft including a self-branded pilsner, which was decent.  The drinks come with cool translucent plastic monkeys hanging off them - a nice touch.

They have a prix fixe option ( $40/person with a $10 wine pairing ) that involves a lot of small sub-dishes containing some of their more popular offerings.  We were not initially offered this menu and had to ask ... and when we did the waitress suggested that we simply share one $40 set between us.  She suggested that it was plenty of food for two people, and I definitely agree.

We also got their pumpkin curry ( served in a regular bowl - some times they apparently will serve it in a hollowed out pumpkin ) and a seafood salad called Yam Talay.

Flavors were generally very approachable, though somewhat heavier than we are used to from Thai food.  Nothing was particularly spicy, including dishes that are traditionally *very* spicy.  The papaya salad was the least spicy I've ever had.  What was lost in spice was made up for in strong salt and savory flavors - plenty of fish sauce to go around.

The pumpkin curry was excellent, though my companion complained that the pumpkin chunks therein were a little large for her taste.

Service was generally good and very friendly.

In the end, there are some good things going on here, and it's a bit more upscale than most Thai places I've been to.  The dishes are competent and the flavors strong, but there is a little more emphasis placed on the extremely savory without accompanying emphasis on spice.  In my opinion, Thai food needs both to really shine.

Good food and nice ambiance for a sit-down dinner, but not so great prices.

I don't understand places where rice doesn't come with curry dishes because who orders curry and doesn't eat it with rice?? (each bowl of jasmine rice is $2.50). I also feel like you are paying more for the fusion and ambiance than the food, much like dining at Straits or Sino in Santana Row, because I've had comparable Thai food for much cheaper at smaller restaurants.

That aside, I do have to admit the food was tasty. The pumpkin curry with chicken and bell peppers is a must-try. The flavor of the duck curry was also good, but it's like a treasure hunt to find a piece of duck meat or duck fat in the dish. The basil chicken and pad thai were both good, and the pad thai actually came with a lot of shrimp.

All in all, we left full and satisfied, though poorer than before.

Brannon and 3rd Street is definitely a destination for us (we don't find ourselves strolling around this part of the City too often), but it was well worth the extra effort to get here ($10 cab from Financial District).  Unassuming and industrial outside belies the warm, chic, yet comfortable interior.

Check-in on a busy Valentine's Day evening was quick and painless.  We got a cozy window seat.  The interior is beautifully lit, nice music, oil lamps on tables, and seating not so close as to be eavesdropping on your neighbor's conversations.

The menu is extensive and is what I'd call Thai fusion.  What it's fused with is hard to tell, but I like the creativity!  We ordered the Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls and Sirloin Salad as starters.  Six portions of Spring Roll arrived on a porcelain boat with a spicy peanut fish sauce dip.  Cold, crisp, and delicious!  The salad was a good 2-person portion.  Slices of perfectly grilled and seasoned steak atop chunks of iceberg lettuce, red onion, cilantro, with a fish sauce and vinegar dressing.  I could eat a bowl of this.

We ordered a $28 bottle of La Follette Pinot Noir which paired beautifully.  Light enough to not mask flavors, yet the crisp Pinot fruit came right through.

We decided to sample a few entrees so ordered the Belly Basil (crisp-skin pork belly slices stir fried with basil and vegetables), Eggplant Tofu (sauteed with bell pepper, fresh basil in chili and garlic sauce), and the Grilled Lamb To Die For (marinated lamb chops served with grilled asparagus and carrots in a white wine & garlic sauce with a side of sticky rice).  We also ordered a side of steamed brown rice and side of coconut rice.

Hands down, the lamb chops ruled!  Perfect grilling, slightly gamey taste that worked well against the sweet sticky rice.  The Belly Basil was addictive, spicy, basil-licious, and the portion of pork belly was generous.  Crisp pork skin added a great play of texture against the fatty deliciousness of the belly.  The Eggplant Tofu was good, but perhaps the weakest of the entrees we sampled.  The eggplant was well-cooked (still firm and well-flavored), but it was already only warm by the time it arrived to the table rather than piping hot.

While the steamed brown rice was your average steamed rice, the coconut rice was OFF THE HOOK!  I'd go back just for a side of rice!

Needless to say, we had no room for desserts (and they had already run out of fresh Mango and Sticky Rice).

All in (apps, dinner, bottle of wine) we racked up a $120 tab (not including tip).  And we tipped well, as the service all around was impeccable.

This may have been a Valentine's Day destination dinner, but I think Koh Samui & The Monkey is now on our favorite list.  We'll be back often!

Just simply good Thai food. The ambiance is great, friendly Thai waitresses and an awesome bar.  Really great curry's for seafood or meat and then yummy appetizers and noodles.  I don't understand why people are so critical with these reviews- it's good food for a reasonable price!

The food was creative but ok taste. BBQ chicken was too dry. the eggplant sauteed tofu was too oily and spicy. The service was friendly. The Deco was nice.

Mediocre food, water tastes odd, and adult drinks that taste like pine sol.

I was in the Bay Area last week for some work related training and all I could think of was where was I going to eat.  I found Koh Sammui & the Monkey on one of my yelp friends reviews.  The review was well done and my experience matched my expectations.  I thank all of the yelpers for their time and effort in making sure we a good clear picture of a location.
I love the fact that I can eat a local establishment that most out of town people would never realize even existed.   I started with the fresh spring roll, Basil Gai ground chicken med heat, coconut steamed rice and the traditional Bangkok Pad Thai with chicken.  All topped off with a cold Singha that hit the spot after a long day of learning stuff.
The service was excellent; the atmosphere was elegant yet friendly.  This is the perfect place to take a date.  I have added it to my list of places to return with my wife.
    Good eats

I finally got to dine in at Koh Samui & The Monkey this past week for dinner.  I loved the ambiance and this thai restaurant as an alternative to Osha Thai.  The presentation of some of the dishes were great.  Here were my picks of the night:

    Food:
Imperial Rolls: nicely presented and great tasting
Fried Chicken with Fried Rice: Hearty portion and a good dish to share
Pad Thai with Tofu: This dish was lacking
Pumpkin Curry with Brown Rice: Probably my favorite dish of the night
    Fresh Coconut Juice: really good!

Will definitely be back here when I'm craving Thai food in the SOMA.

This place is great ! I recommend everyone visit this place if you love Thai or you are new to SF. The hostess was so kind to introduce herself as soon as we walked in making the experience much more personable . Ashley then seated us at the bar  giving us a heads up that it was happy hour! Nice!!! The drinks are amazing! The bartender Max always does his best at making the drinks so good! I have been to so many bars and I have never got the level of service that I got from Max . This place is head and shoulders above any Thai place in San Francisco  . 5 stars

I came in for dinner with my family over Thanksgiving break and let's just say I was not disappointed by their culinary wizardry.

First off, it seems like reservations are definitely the way to go - happy hour seems incredibly popular here, so if you're trying to drop by during the week I wish you the best of luck! Speaking of happy hour, their cocktail menu is delish - I tried the Mango Mojito...mmm, so good!

Between the three of us, we split the Beef Satay - the cucumber salad is so refreshing - and the Fresh Spring Rolls; then we moved our way to the main course. To be honest, I was so enthralled with my lamb that I have no clue what my parents got...but I do know that the lamb was damn good :)

The food is decent and the service is pretty good, while the prices remain high and the portions remain small.

My hubby and I have been going out to dinner here almost 2 years. I'm all about 'green salmon' and can't count how many times I ordered! The grilled salmon is not so salty but so tender, and the green noodles are made of moloheiya. Chicken satay, beef satay, red curry, pumpkin curry and volcano fried rice etc etc. all of the meals are awesome. The service is always very nice and polite. We will go ack after we meet our dirt goals!
