A winters day in New york, I stumbled on this place as I was exploring the Village scene. The place does not look much from the outside and was very quiet when I walked in. I was planning to make it a to-go order but after realizing how tired I was, just decided to stay. The only waiter on the floor, did not speak too much english and seemed very shy. Since I am 5% heath conscious these days, I decided to go vegan and ordered the tofu with mixed vegetables and spice.
To my surprise the food came out within five minutes, so i was a bit skeptical as i took my first bite. It definitely was fresh, and very spicy and tasted pretty good. The food quantity was fairly large and for $8 you can't go wrong.
I give it 3 stars as didn't feel there was much life in the restaurant and the service itself looked tired. Though the prices are very reasonable  and the food is good

This place was just shut down for health code violations. Something about roaches and mice droppings everywhere.  How does one tell Yelp to mark this place as shut down?

I can't believe I used to eat here for lunch.

    It got the job done.
Food is decent, service is slow, food portions are small. Price is reasonable for the area.
On the flip side, the place is well heating esp. on these cold nights, when your office heat barley turns on . It definitely was quite a treat.

Big fan of Thai food and this place was near my hotel so we thought we'd give it a go.

The patio was lovely, great people watching and nice to sit on a patio on a hot day. The fella working there was fantastic! Super quick, super friendly.

The portions are huge. Like HUGE. For $10 or $11 you definitely get a dish that could feed 2 people. And unlike Thai restaurants I usually go to the rice comes with the dish, you don't have to order it as an extra.

I had the chili and basil dish, my usual from any given thai place. This tasted like it was made it a cheap tomato sauce!! I didn't even know what to say. It wasn't BAD but it definitely is not what I was expecting and this is a dish I have ordered from countless Thai restaurants and I've never seen it like that. Barely touched it, got it to go and fed it so my starving travel companion upon her arrival.

My mom had the green curry. It was fantastic. I have had many green curies and this was definitely one of the best!!!! Just delicious! There was enough on the plate for me and my mom to both eat her dish and we were full.

I would come back here again but just stick to the curry instead of that weird basil dish!

    .Weekend Dinner.

Tried one of their crispy filet snapper top with spicy chili garlic sauce
The sauce was delicious...though a bit heavy on the batter side....so I felt a little bit of guilt eating something that was probably very unhealthy for me.  I remember the veggies being fresh for the most part.

The restaurant itself is a little worn down, and even refurnished looks a bit blah.  There is a patio area... but because it's so blah, I rather sit inside, where there are only a handful of tables.  Definitely NOT a date place!!!! It's a great hole in the wall, neighborhood restaurant if you're looking for something cheap & quick!  Decent to say the least and a hit or miss depending on the type of dish you order.

They get that extra half a star for offering brown rice.  Terrible offerings of dessert. So terrible, I had to pass elsewhere for my sweet fix.

This place was terrible. I've walked by a million times, and it always seemed realtively full, so I assumed it must be alright. Boy, was I wrong. Started with the "summer rolls"- which were filled with a strange spaghetti squash/pork mixture, and not a lot else. No carrot, and very little flavor. Ugh. Then our main plates came- I love pad thai and pad see ew (which they call pad see ell for some reason). Both of these noodle dishes had a burnt aroma, and the flavor was just not there. The pad thai noodles were dry in addition. Both proved rather inedible. We also had the crispy beef with tamarind- chewy mush with sweet and sour sauce would have been a better description. The fried beef was completely mushed from the sauce, which wasn't very good either. Honestly, it was so bad I didn't even bother sending it back, because I didn't think they could do much better.

I love Thai food, and this is simply the worst Thai food I have ever had.

There are some good things and bad things to say about this place. Here's the good:

    - The Seafood Curry (made with coconut milk) Soup is really really good on a cold night or when you have a cold.....its very spicy and will clear you up fast!

    - Durring hot months they open the canopy and its a great place to people watch from. The Meatpacking District has a lot of beautiful looking people.

    - The service is really good. The guys who work there are really really nice and will do anything for you.

    - Prices are cheap and cocktails are around $6.

    Here's the bad:

    - Their bathrooms are absolutely discusting! They are smaller than the most smallest closet you have ever seen, old, and dirty.

    - The house tea although very good when it comes out gets cold quickly because they serve it in cast iron tea pots which loose their heat.

Overall I think the good overcome the bad so it's a pretty good place. I don't know how authentic the cuisine is but everything I have tried here has been really good.  But as my Dad used to say "Not a place to write home to Mom about".

Kobma is a reliable Thai restaurant, it's just not anything special. The food isn't spicy and a few of their dishes are really bright with food coloring.

The restaurant is divided into two sections. One section has a big window along the street. The other section is the inside of the restaurant. We sat next to the big window and it was great to watch everyone walk by in costume on Halloween night.

For appetizers we got the spring rolls, chicken satay, and papaya salad. The chicken satay was bland but the spring rolls were right on. The papaya salad wasn't spicy at all which I'm glad because it tastes much better mild. The carrots in the papaya salad were more fuschia than orange.

For the main dishes, which we shared family style, we got crispy beef with tamarind sauce, chicken with coconut sauce, boneless duck with curry sauce and house special fried rice. My favorite was the chicken with coconut curry. The chicken was soft and it was accompanied with red peppers and baby corn. The duck was similar to the chicken except it was really rubbery. Pass on the duck. The beef was similar to a sweet and sour dish. I'd pass on that too. The rice was okay. I was kind of hoping for a spicy thai style rice dish with basil but I don't think that is their style of cooking. We pretty much ate everything in sight nonetheless.

The pina colada was really good and our waiter served us in a Halloween mask. They have a sense of humor here. The appetizers came out quick but the main dishes took awhile. The check took hours to arrive as well. Hopefully you have time for a leisurely meal when you dine at Kobma.

One more thing. The bathroom is pretty funny. I was reading the directions on the hand dryer. It says if you want to dry your hair, turn the nozzle upwards. Awesome! Either someone is planning to wash their hair in the tiny sink (ew) or the hand dryer is so old it once doubled as a blow dryer.

I did something stupid today. I was busy at work and ordered delivery from this restaurant based on the menu on http://GrubHub.com alone, without checking reviews first. BAD mistake!

I got the sweet and sour chicken lunch special, which was disgusting. I took a few bites and had to throw it away. Everything looked like a disgusting version of a curry and tasted like it's been out for days. Even the rice was awful. A thai place that can't make rice right?

The egg soup that came with the dish was ok.

I also got an order of Summer Rolls. I've had some bad summer rolls before (hard to find good ones in NYC!), but these certainly take the prize. I literally threw away the entire thing after one bite.

I don't know whether I'm more mad at myself or at this place. I really want a refund right now.

Disgusting! Stay away. You've been warned.

I live pretty nearby so I usually stop by for lunch once or twice a week before heading out to work at a nearby cafe.

The food is decent. I mean, a soup/salad, diet coke, and an entree for $7 is a pretty good deal for the W. Village, isn't it?

This summer, I've particularly enjoyed sitting out on their patio. But it sucks that there's a bus stop right outside...and sometimes I get paranoid that the exhaust fumes will somehow settle onto my food.

And oh yes, they always play the same radio station that airs Your Body is a Wonderland...makes me feel so much better about eating my lard covered beef pad-siew.

    Thanks, John.

    Pros: Fast service
Cons: Not "Thai-spicy" spicy, server not knowing the dish by its Thai name

So being from California, I was yearning for something spicy and spotted Kobma. The service was very fast and efficient. However when I asked for Prik Khing, I was told there was no such thing even after I spelled it out. Not being Thai, I took the waiteress word, even though I had been eating Prik Khing the past couple of years at various Thai food joints.

I ordered Chicken with string beans and told them to make it spicy.
The food arrived amazingly fast (which was good as I was really hungry) and the size of the dish was big as well. Sadly, it was not spicy at all. I had to borrow red chilly paste and green chillies to make it spicy - I guess New Yorkers don't like spicy food as us Californians.

If you like People watching, you can sit in the front part of the restaurant and watch traffic (foot and the mobile kind) pass by on Hudson.

I am Thai so I know what real Thai food should be like.
This place is pretty bad as far as Thai food goes.  Most dishes are fairly cheap with large portions for WV location.  Service is decent and seating area is good, but good Thai food it does NOT serve.  Many dishes I had was essentially average to somewhat sub par Americanized Chinese food.  (don't get me wrong, I think Americ style Chinese food can be yummy!)  I guess if you go there and like the food then its great for you as its pretty cheap!
Go to many other places on 8th Ave in the teens and you will get better Thai food.

There have been many a time that I'd be walking around the neighborhood in search of take-out dinner and end up back at the apartment because I wasn't able to decide on something or didn't find something I liked. One of those nights, I wanted some light asian comfort food and chanced upon Kobma Thai. I've lived in the neighborhood for 2.5 years and never so much ventured into this place. Funny how desperation or perhaps a sense of adventure led me here.

I was glad to discover the mixed seafood Laad Na... I really like this dish and had no idea it was available in the neighborhood. Often, I'd have to travel to Chinatown to an authentic Malaysian restaurant to have something that would be similar to Laad Na. Ahhhh I'm glad I chanced upon this great find and a place that whips the dish up as a take-out item in no time!

Went here for my first time tonight.  I had tofu and veggies in spicy chili sauce and my partner had seafood curry.  Both dishes were very good, fresh tasting and not oily. The space is not fancy, but it was nice to sit in the glass enclosed area that had a view of the street.  The prices were good too. I will definitely go back to eat here again.

Update: I've become a huge fan of Kobma in recent months. It's my staple Thai place in the neighborhood. The reason I've come to love this place so much is the staff. It's a family-run business, and they're so friendly and nice. I'm happy to give them my business!
    ------------
Made a stop at Kobma for dinner last night and thought it was OK. Relative to other thai food I've had (and I've had a lot because I *love* thai food), I thought it was mediocre, but they had good prices (especially relative to other places in the neighborhood.

My experience has been that Thai iced tea is usually standardized across restaurants, but at Kobma, the iced tea tasted a bit funky -- first, not sweet or milky enough, then when they played around with it a little, it was too sweet and still not milky enough. That was sad, since I always order iced tea with a Thai meal.

Their pad-see-ew didn't have the black beany flavor that I love, and their chicken with eggplant was OK -- the thin cuts of chicken were good.

The restaurant doesn't stand out at all amongst Thai restaurants, but given the nice service and good prices, I'll definitely be returning for more.

This is my go-to thai place since i moved into the neighborhood. Usually i do strictly delivery, but I have eaten there once as well. Lets talk delivery first...fast and efficient, everything comes really hot and the portions are huge. The salad can easily be split between 2 people and if your not starving i would split the entree as well. They tend to overdue it on the sauce, and while I loveee that, I know many people do not, so if your one of those - id make sure to tell them light on the sauce, and you will still probably get a large amount !

Now...eating there...they say you can't judge a book by it cover, and it could not be more true of this place. It truly is a dump, but what they lack in decor, they make up in taste. The food is great and the service is quick. The outdoor patio is also nice and since the place is rarely packed, I would choose to sit there over inside any day.

Honestly, I have not found a better more consistently reliable thai place in the neighborhood than this !

3 stars for good food, but blah joint.  Kobma isn't a place I'll visit again, but the food I had along with my friend's noodle soup were pretty good.  The service is off - they messed up my order by not making it spicy, but I still loaded it up with chili sauce.  I think the place need a renovation since it looks dungeon-y.  The prices are reasonable.

Pretty good Thai, and really nice, attentive waitstaff. My boyfriend loved the pork chops (a day later, he is still talking about them). Standard American thai fare, with vegetarian items as well. Not as glamorous as the new uber-modern Thai places that keep popping up, but more cozy. They have a nice little front sun room with big windows for people watching on Hudson.

This might be my favorite Thai restaurant in New York.  It's nothing fancy, and I don't think Thai food ought to be either.  It's consistent, tasty, and low-key.  Sometimes the service is a little slow, though I once went with a group of about 10 people, and it turned out fine.

2 words for this place - It rocks! Me and my friend randomly checked out this place with no expectations. For appetizers my friend got the steamed dumplings and i got the charcoal grilled eggplant salad with shrimp and chicken. It was a bit more sour than expected. For the mains, I got the sauteed chicken in coconut sauce. It was a very very delicious dish with nice tender pieces of chicken with asparagus, baby corn, carrots, red bell peppers topped with a rich smooth creamy coconut sauce. It was to be eaten with rice, but the gravy was so sexy, I forgot the rice altogether... I also got cranberry juice to accompany the mains. In the end I was like... "Oye hoye.. mazaa aa gaya yaar" :)

A friend and I just found this place roaming around bored in the West Village (yes I know, dangerous!) one day and we became regular customers. I pretty much have gone to this restaurant at least three times a month for the past two years. The food is great and has a great selection if your a carnivore or a 'carrot-eater.' The portions are huge so, between two people of 'average' size, two appetizers and one main course covers dinner.

My friend lived on the same block as this place and had always said it was good and suggested we eat there but I never wanted to go in fear that it was just another generic Thai place.  Then one night I was in the neighborhood, starving, on a freezing night I decided to eat here because it was the closest refuge from the cold.  I was pleasantly surprised.  For starters we had veggi summer rolls, I'm not sure if they're always veggi or we specified no meat but they were veggi and pretty good.  For my entree I had the pork chops which were great.  They came with this basil-onion sauce for dipping which was good but the chops were delicious by themselves.  They had this great barbecue flavor, similar to Vietnamese pork chops.  I also sampled my friend's veggi pad thai which wasn't the best pad thai I've had but I would place in the better than average category.  Also they were very good with the water service, which is lacking in so many restaurants.  I would definitely come back, I'm interested to see how their other dishes (particularly the seafood dishes) are.

this restaurant in ultra-trendy west village was shockingly GROSS. i left the place wondering how in the world could something this horrible exist in such a lovely area. the carpets were dingy brown and smelled of vomit. the bartender forgot our beer. the salad dressing that they use for EVERY salad was so salty i could feel my thighs expand. and when i told the staff about the salad, he became defensive and told me that i didn't know what fish sauce was. i am asian. i've had fish sauce many times. i know it's not supposed to be that salty. the only good thing was that the pad thai was palatable and there was a lot of it.
