We took my good friends fiancee "camping" for the first time. I say "camping" because we were in a lodge with A/C, a stereo, real beds, and running water with electricity. It was camping in the fact that my friends AT&T iCrap had zero bars and that's about it
But the campground was very nice. There is a lot of stuff that could be a bit better, but for a KOA, its nice that it isn't a whole row of cabins like some of the other KOA's I've stayed at.
What is nice is how close it is to Lake Santa Margarita, SLO, and Atascadero and some great places to have a nice meal then come back and enjoy the campfire. -

This place was sooooo dirty and compared to the other KOA I had just stayed at, it was horrible. The bugs were just everywhere and I stayed in a six person lodge with three other people and it was a little to close for comfort. There were two scary spiders in the lodge and a termite- EW.
There was also a brown reclouse in our lantern. The pool was full of spiders and needed some chlorine. I would not stay here again because there septic tank really needed to be cleaned because the whole time even inside the lodge it smelled like CRAP!!!! It was horrible and then the day we left they cleaned it and the lodge wasn't very clean when we came in there were hairs in the top bunk and the shower and toilet were dirty. I lifted the top bunk and bottom mattresses and there were crayons and cheerios everywhere! The staff was very nice though. But Im not coming back! -

It breaks my heart a little to give this place 2 stars, but really, the second star is a mercy star. The staff was outstanding. Really, the service was excellent.
The camping, however, was dismally disappointing. We are tent campers, and we got campsite #88, which had no water or electric service. The nearest facility was a porta potty that you'd basically have to drive to. None of that was really a problem. We were actually really excited to feel like we were "really" camping at a KOA, instead of "KOA kamping" among an ocean of RVs.
When we arrived at our campsite, we were thrilled! It was pretty remote on top of this bluff that overlooked a beautiful canyon of trees. Our campsite had enormous oak trees that provided a shade canopy, and you couldn't see a single neighbor, though you could hear them occasionally. We thought we found the perfect campsite!
Then the sun set. Then the bugs came out. I don't mean like the normal mosquitoes one should expect with camping. I mean BUGS - and LOTS of them! There was a constant stream of retarded moths flying to their deaths in the Coleman lantern. There was some bug that resembled a tick, though we never confirmed they were actually ticks. They concerned us enough to check the dogs and usher them into their kennel inside our tent for the night. Then we discovered these giant green flying bugs. Seriously they were 2-3" long with weird wings. Scary sh*t! We never could get comfortable there. Reluctantly, we went to sleep for the night in our tent. We had a reservation for 3 nights but only stayed that one night.
After an outing that lasted all day, we returned to camp late the second night and tore down camp. The final straw was the tarantula. Seriously. Hairy legs. Nasty. It scared the begeezus out of me. Add to that the live skunk we saw near our campsite, the snake holes in the ground, and the fire ants we saw all over the large oak tree, and we just couldn't hang.
Sorry, KOA. Bugs aside, your facility is beautiful. Your staff is warm and welcoming. We really wanted to like this place, but it was probably on my top 3 list of worst camping experiences ever. Really, really bad.
If bugs don't bug you though, enjoy the view! -

We just came back from cabin camping at Santa Margarita KOA with three families including kids ranging from ages 5 to 13. We were a bit concerned with the mixed reviews on the web but this was the only site available in our timeframe so we decided to take a chance.
This turned out to be a hidden gem. It is a nice, well kept place with a great location and wonderful facilities. The cabins were great, restrooms clean and staff very friendly.
It is 8 miles from highway 101 close to the lake. They also have lodges, yurts and camping facilities. Kids had a lot of fun in their huge jumping pillow and could also play volley ball and basketball.
Overall recommended. -

Every year a group of my friends and I go camping. The KOA campgrounds in Santa Margarita aren't the best but by far are not the worst. Although there were cabins we chose to tent camp. The site they assigned our large group was very large but was almost half a mile from the bathroom. Since it's camping it's pitch black at night a few tiny lights would be nice since the trail to the bathroom is a but slippery. There really isn't much to do at the camp site. The did have a pool and I heard that they also had dirt biking trails. For the most part our group took local trips. The sites did have large fire pits which were great at night. It's a nice place to camp at night but I suggest looking up local attractions. This isn't the place for you if you plan on staying put of have to pee in middle of the night.
