The Hepburn. Hands down my all time favorite sandwich. I can't live without it. Everytime i step into Klien's I'm thinking I'll try something new. Nope. The draw of the salmon pate on the perfect bun with the perfect condiments is too great.

They are leaving their current location, but hopefully they'll move instead of shutting down completely!

    *update*
so writing this review prompted me to head up to klein's for lunch, and yes, sadly, i again did order the hepburn. the best time to go (if you're headed there for lunch) is a little after 1pm. The lunch crowd is gone and so you'll have a place to sit and peruse the board of sandwiches for your next trip!

I am angry. Do you know why? Klein's is an excellent deli and a Potrero Hill icon for decades, and now the owners of the building want to turn it into some high-falutin', bourgeoisie wine shop & market. Never mind that there is an organic grocery and TWO, that's right, TWO small markets WITH WINE, within a block. Not to mention a WINE SHOP two blocks away on 18th St. Now I like a good bottle of wine and fine cheese and whatever else the new place will sell, but how much wine needs to be sold on Potrero Hill?!?
    *Sigh*
Now that I'm done ranting, Klein's has great sandwiches and soups, though a little pricier than your average deli. And did I mention it's been there for decades? If you live near Klein's and have never been there, make a trip before December. Otherwise, you'll have to go to SFO to go to a Klein's, and who goes to an airport just for the food?!?

Went to Klein's today based on the reviews below and was pleased with the quality of their sandwiches.  Located up on the Hill, there are plenty of parking spaces to be found.

I had "the Ferrarro" which was a bunch of meat on a sourdough roll.  Meat is always good but the sandwich is not as big as a Little Lucca's.  It might be unfair for me to compare this sandwich to those sandwiches, but a deli is a deli.

I did notice a letter from the owner (i think) on the window next to the front door stating that they will be operating at this location until December 31st.    That only gives me 4 months to try out all of their sandwiches.

Great sandwiches and yummy veggie chili.

I hate buying sandwiches since they're so easy and cheap to make at home, BUT Klein's makes them better and cheaper than I can. One of my favorite spots for when I'm working at home or having a lazy Saturday.

Just my luck, right when I discover a new place to go to for lunch, it has to shut its doors. DAMN!

The sandwiches I got here were quite good. Not too big and not too small.  I especially enjoyed the "Anderson." Also, quite a tasty potato salad.

My only regret is that I didn't get to try all the sandwiches.

I'm not sure it's completely fair to review a place based solely upon eating two items off the menu, but since I only get over to Klein's about every other month I can't bring myself to order anything different.

The items of which I speak are the Rudolph (crab salad) and the Kahlo (chicken curry w/ chutney). They are delicious. My girlfriend and I always get one of each and split them up half and half. Delicious!

If I had a gripe I could say it's that there is a line sometimes or the servers aren't all smiling and talkative, but I won't because that isn't why I come here. You go to the counter, you order, they call your order, you pick it up, you eat it. It's bliss. Call your mom if you want someone to fawn over you.

I'm an east coast transplant and when you say deli, I want a deli.. I want some good old fashioned cured meats with a heavy helping of sauerkraut.  Klein's has a wonderful assortment of specialty sandwiches, a delectable moussaka and a nice airy open feeling on the top of portrero hill.

A nice little hike up to work up an appetite and a easy breezy stroll back down.

Klein's is great.  They make a great sandwich to order, but I'm working my way through their listing of Specialty Sandwiches.  Each sandwich is named after a notable woman in history:  The Piaf, The Abzug, The Ferraro, the O'Keeffe, the Kahlo...you get the idea.  (My favorite based solely on the name is the Goodall: Peanut Butter & Banana).  I'm going to keep going in until I've tried them all or figured out exactly who the Mercedes and the Rudolph are named after.

They also make great deli salads and have a decent wine selection (though I generally tend to stick to Snapple or Root Beer) and generally have some very interesting art by locals on display.

It was also the first place I'd heard of Howard Dean...they were early and HUGE on that bandwagon...but despite that I won't take a star away.

They also have a patio in the back for outdoor dining, but it doesn't get the sun that the front tables do.

Really one of my favorite neighborhood spots.

You may think me weird, but I love all manner of liver products - foie gras, liverwurst, pate, big fried globs of liver - love them all!  I do not love fava beans.  I do not love a nice chianti.  And I have never been to a non-Vietnamese deli in SF that had pate sandwiches.

Oh Roosevelt samich, I love you.  And Klein's is just a cute place on a cute corner full of cute workers and people of all levels of cuteness (read: some NOT).  They have a patio which I will be sure to investigate on a sunnier day..........or not, since they'll be closed/moved before the next batch of sunny days comes.  So sad.

*Sigh* Klein's was driven out of its location by the guy who owns the building (and happens to live above the place) -- he's turned what used to be a fantastic neighborhood deli for indoor/outdoor eating into a place that makes sandwiches that make you wonder why you didn't just go grab some bread, meat and cheese at Safeway :(

Kleiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiins! Now I can only visit you when I'm flying out of SFO...

Strong women - strong food!  What better way to fill your tummy than to reflect on the accomplishments of Jane Goodall while eating peanut butter and banana sandwich (ok, it should be related to Elvis), but lots of delish deli stacks here, even Turkey Pastrami to keep you healthy.

Plus, healthy warm soups never cease to fail, that you can keep you happy in the plentiful sun (or rare fog) outside while looking at the views of downtown SF.

Good ole Potrero parking means an easy visit for touring foodies, or a nice biz lunch. And don't forget your fresh drinks like Adina!

Great sandwiches, horrible chicken noodle soup.  Noodles were over done, way to soft.  When telling one of the staff behind the counter, i got a cold shoulder, a kind of  "ya, whatever".  he didnt say a word to me.  no smiles from staff, ever.....
    No soup...

This place is pretty hip and always bustling. Thankfully, I've never had to wait too long. Lots of variety, and good people.

My co-worker liked the roast beef, I'm a vegetarian who's hooked on the egg salad. They only give 1 slice of cheese on my egg salad sandwich, so I always get extra.

Kind of surly service, but still a good place for some deli meat.  The prices are too high for me.  I had a really good turkey sandwich here, and I even took some turkey home with me for lunch the next day.  Very interesting menu, and creative names for sandwiches.

I've only eaten here once, so I can't say anything about bad service (they treated me like royalty), but the incredibly  tasty cold cuts will lure me back. They can make you a sandwich by request, but to enjoy the experience you should order off the special menu. I had the Anderson. In one word: OHMIGOD-YUM.

Perfect little lunch spot on top of the Hill with a fabulous view of the city & bay bridge and even better sandy's!  I fell in love with the Kahlo (chicken salad with mango chutney, curry, almonds & raisins) and have never strayed.  They name all their sandy's after legendary women and try to make them equally as diverse and remarkable, with ingredients such as chicken liver pate, beef tongue, and bavarian liverwurst.  It's worth the long trek up the hill!

They have wondeful sandwiches that are named after celebs, or they'll build a custom creation for you. There's often a line here, but if you're there at an off hour you can get a table inside or relax outside on the sunny side of the city.

The Winnemucca - mmmmm.  Excellent neighborhood deli.  Not far from another one of my fave hot spots, ManiPedi.  Great spot for a quick lunch if you want a great, unique sandwich.  I arrived for a 'late' lunch once and they were out of the onion roll for my sandwich.  But, minutes later, I was surprised by a hand delivery of fresh onion rolls for my sandwich!  Call me simple, but I was a little excited about the idea of fresh inventory (there was no guarantee my onion roll just rolled off of some onion roll factory breadline, but atleast it hadn't been sitting out on the deli counter for day's on end!).  This was an extremely hearty sandwich but not too heavy - just right!  I'm counting the days to my next visit.  Mostly a local hangout.

Klein's is gone!! I went there the other day and found workers remodelling the space so I thought that Klein's was remodelling. But then I found out that they lost their lease and therefore closed the Potrero location as 12/15/06. This is a sad day in the history of pastrami sandwich!!!!

Klein's has great sandwiches.  I've been coming here for 5 years. When I had a loft on 22nd and Penn I used to walk up the hill for their great sandwiches.  I only ate the tuna and egg salad but I hear great things about their pastrami on rye. Given their dedication to excellence, I would feel comfortable ordering anything here.

At long last, after feeling as though I was never going to find a real sandwich in SF, I stumbled upon Klein's. I'm hooked. Their celeb menu is fun and creative, but I usually create my own. If you're lucky you can grab a sunny table outside. Try one of their fruit and nut cookies--you'll be too full after a sandwich, but it makes for a sweet treat later!

I have a serious problem with a deli that, in my ten years in the neighborhood, has never served a reuben or matzoh ball soup. And charges for pickles!!!
And the other day, when I decided to give them another chance, I bought a fritatta that ended up having MOLD on it. Stick to Thinkers Cafe, the service is friendlier and the sandwiches are far superior.
