THE 7-11 OF HOME IMPROVEMENT

I'm not a big fan of the big box home improvement stores, so little neighborhood True Value stores really hit the mark for most of my needs.  Selection was pretty good given the size of the place and the service is excellent.  My only complaint is that prices were a bit higher than I had anticipated.  Though for the convenience of being able to walk there from my house and avoid the living nightmare of a Home Depot trip, I suppose it's worth it.

A solid neighborhood hardware store.  The service is good, people are friendly and willing to help.  I haven't always been greeted when I've walked in but I've never found any of the staff rude or unhelpful.  I've always found what I needed from a Weber grill to small nails to ant repellant.  You can almost always get a better deal elsewhere but it's a great place to support local business.

The service is generally ok.  But they are just ridiculously overpriced for even the most basic of items.  My better half came back earlier with $25.00 worth of felt pads (1 package) for chair legs and a couple sets of spare keys.

I recognize it sits in a prime, and therefore expensive, location on Southport.  But Klein hit 's you like it's an airport gift shop.  As much as I hate dealing with the maze of the big boxes, I have a hard time justifying that kind of mark-up even on a small spend like this one.

I agree with Robert; this is definitely one of the better True Value's in the city.  While it's a smaller space, it's well organized and they have decent stock (including smaller propane tanks for my little grill).

Huge bonus points that the copies of my house keys they cut actually work.

As a handyman some days include 2-5 trips to a hardware store. Occasionally I'll go 2-3 days w/o a visit. Usually I can make a purchase & be on my way back to the job, before I'd be through a big box's front flap (door), and that convenience is valuable.

The people here are very friendly, & helpful, and Their selection is above average.

My complaint(s)...
1 - They do not offer professional trade discounts (a direct savings to my customers & their neighbors),
2 - Their charge to replace broken glass in a wooden window was $50 O.M.G.  W.T.M. (way to much) !!!  after a deep breath (from every orifice), I called around & found the following prices
- Portage Park Neighborhood Hardware Stores (3) $22, $25, & $30
- Old Town Hardware Store $35
- Tenenbaum ( 1/2 mile away from Klein) $25
- Klein True Value $50 ???

I will repeat they are very friendly, helpful, & have a good selection of the most common hardwares,  but to charge 50% more  for labor than a downtown hardware store is surprising.

This place is f-#$in' great, they really listened and understood my predicament.  I have this chair made of gold and I've been trying to sell it but everyone thinks it will scratch their hardwood floors. So they showed me these f-#$in' felt pads I can stick onto the bottom of the legs. I should be able to sell that f-#$er any day now.  Plus I walked out with a Bono hardwood floor care kit. Golden, f-#$in' golden.

So I needed some paint.

EASY.

So I spilled the paint on the carpet.. OH MAN!

I came right back -- I got the carpet extractor, they even called to find out how to remove paint from the carpet... WOW!!!!   I would go back every day if I had to -- they are GREAT people to work with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great family owned and operated business.  Friendly, organized and will help you get what you need if they don't have it in stock.  Thanks Shaun, you and Katie Rock!

This is one of the better True Value's. This store is not that large but they carry all top of the line products. They have alot of outdoor grills for sale also.

This is a teeny tiny place as far as hardware stores go, but the people there are so amazing! I went to pick up some painter's tape and spackle, and then - of course - remembered that I needed some of those little picture hanging hooks. When I finished shopping (and had a few other impulse-buys in my basket), the cashier couldn't find a price when she scanned the picture hooks. No big deal, I wouldn't have minded going back to the aisle where they were (again, it's a small store), but instead she gave them to me for 99c! I think they were supposed to be about four dollars, so thanks for that!
