There are many positive things to say about Kitchen #1 after the requisite warning of oh my lord, seriously, everything here is greasy, fried in grease, served with a side of grease, and arrives in a puddle of grease. Greasy greasy greasy greasy greasy. But there's a time and a place for this kind of food.
As promised, positive things about Kitchen #1:
1. They are always open until ungodly-late, like 4:30am. Once I called at 5am, delirious with lack of sleep. They were open. Ignore their posted hours and call them. They're probably open.
2. They will deliver at 5am. In the death ice-sleet-hail-whatever. To your doorstep. The future is now!
3. Their food may not be fancy-shmancy, but it is reliable. Reliable, greasy (had to say it), salty Americanized Chinese food.
4. For some reason, their sodas are strangely large, a weird size I've never seen anywhere else. Field trip!
Fast, good and not pretentious - just how I like my Chinese take out.
I'd like to say in response to other reviews that complain that there isn't a bathroom... of COURSE there isn't one, it's a TAKE OUT place! Duh. And why would you expect any ambiance?! Again, it's a take out place. Geeze.
The food is cooked and served quickly, and for take out food, it really is up there. Servings are pretty big (in my opinion, at least). If you're in the mood for soup, try the egg drop... it's really quite delicious.
Thanks to http://campusfood.com, I can order food online without ever having to pick up the phone (I hate the phone). I was having a major Chinese food craving the other night, so based on Yelp reviews and proximity to my house, I selected Kitchen No. 1. It arrived in about 30 minutes, hot and fresh to my door.
Verdict? Yum! Seriously some of the best dumplings I've ever had. The sweet and sour chicken (I'm unadventurous) was a little bit more citrusy than I usually like, but the chicken was real chicken (not like the reject pieces of chicken) and very good. The wonton soup was pretty basic, but I love chicken broth (I know, weird) so I was okay with it. All in all, I'll definitely be ordering again.
My boyfriend and I had a mini Chinese feast from Kitchen No. 1 last night while studying (erm, procrastinating) for midterms. We were expecting so-so Chinese, as is the case with most places around the city, and were pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Here's the breakdown of our meal:
Spring rolls--light, crispy, and stuff with tons of veggies
Egg drop soup--not as salty as I'd like, but only $1.35 for a pint!
Steamed egg rolls--a little too doughy, not enough meat, but the sauce is delish
Pork lo mein--tasted smokier than usual, but not greasy and with a good amount of pork and veggies...mmm
Shrimp fried rice--such good flavor! I usually hate shrimp, but they really contributed to the taste of this non-greasy rice. So yummy!
Orange chicken--just the right amount of spice and tang, and a HUGE order for under $9. Plus, they give you steamed broccoli separate from the heavily-sauced chicken, so it doesn't get soggy. Points for that!
I'd definitely order from here again, and I rarely say that about Chinese restaurants in DC. Check it out!
I don't think I would have ever spotted this location if it wasn't for my friend who suggested it. The Triple Delight was bland and lacking in substance (very little meat and very little shrimp...i think i saw one) and the chicken szechuan left a ketchup flavor in my mouth. It wasn't the best and had me wishing I went across the street to Five Guys instead... and had a different friend ;) (ok, that last part about the friend is a lie). =P
Tips:
-No public bathroom
-Limited seating
-Min. credit card charge is $7
-They offer brown rice
Ok, as a senior at Georgetown I would like to share my wisdom regarding Kitchen No. 1.
This Chinese restaurant is a college staple and as such there are certain rules that apply:
1. Always order delivery! This a not a place where you go to sit down and eat! People seem to be complaining about that...just order delivery and enjoy in the comfort of your own home. No, they don't have bathrooms or a large number of seats because it is a take out place!
2. Be hungry when you order. The combo specials are the best: soda, eggroll, entree and rice...but it is a ton of food. And you will probably feel really fat afterwards.
3. Sesame Chicken all the way. Crispy, fried, oozing with sauce...nothing beats it. I've had the chicken lo-mein before as well which is decent, but the Sesame Chicken is why I am in my fourth year of devoted fandom. The crab rangoons are also very good and the egg fu young is good as well. The eggrolls are crispy and stuffed with vegetables.
Don't come here for a gourmet experience. Come for a guaranteed guilty pleasure that will give you periodic cravings to come back in the future.
The price is definitely right, but the food... just mediocre. I had the cashew chicken lunch special.
Main dish: No major complaints, but nothing special.
Rice: It was too dry for my taste. You have the option of going with fried rice or white, but I usually go for white, because I'm afraid of getting too much onion.
Egg Roll: Awful; I couldn't eat more than two bites of it. I can't pinpoint why; it was too fried, and the flavor didn't do it for me.
Overall, it's your typical low-end Chinese takeout, but you'd be better off avoiding the egg rolls, and making your own rice if you're not too lazy.
This place serves good standard Chinese takeout and delivers really fast and cheap, at least if you're in Georgetown. I haven't gone in to sit down and eat and I probably won't - the only Chinese restaurants I'd sit and eat in would either be super fancy or in Chinatown. This place is nothing fancy or out of the ordinary, nothing to jump up and down about. But if you just want to order usual standard Chinese stuff (egg rolls, shrimp toast, dumplings, ribs, sweet and sour stuff, General Tsos, etc.) you can get reliably decent food here for a good price and you get a good sized quantity of food.
I've been working in Georgetown for over a year and a half now and struggle to find new places for lunch that don't cost an arm and a leg and that aren't like every other cafe/deli in the area. Today I decided I was hungry for chinese... and not that garbage they sell in the mall. I decided to try Kitchen No. 1 because the reviews on here weren't that bad and honestly, there aren't many other options. I ordered the small curry chicken, extra spicy, no vegetables (yes, I am picky and difficult). Total came to a little over $6. With no cash on me, I pull out my debit card only to be told it's a $7 minimum *insert eye rolling here*... I'm 50 cents short on my order (and there is no sign stating this) so I reluctantly get a snapple too. They were pretty quick... my order was done in about 5-10 min. I get my bag and head out. Complaint #1 - they used a styrofoam container for everything. This lead to most of the curry leaking out into the plastic bag I was carrying it in. BOOO! Complaint #2 - no fortune cookie. REALLY? How am I supposed to add "... in bed" to the end of my fortune if I don't have one?! Argh! On to the food... Well, the rice was all clumped together and kind of mushy. The chicken pieces were really thick... much thicker then I have ever had anywhere else. Thankfully they appeared to be fully cooked (I'll find out later if I get food poisoning...), but not dry. The curry was kind of bland, not very spicy either. Overall, I have definitely had WAY better and this won't become a regular in my lunch week rotation, but I am sure I will go back on occasion.
I love this place. They have nice clean shrimp. And the prices aren't bad. I ordered a large fried rice for $7, but I eat for three days so it's really an investment. The eggrolls are pretty tasty for $1.25 a piece. Plus, the delievery service is satisfactory. The first time I ordered, they were there in a matter of minutes. But the last couple of time not so fast but I never have to wait long. I wait 20 minutes at the most, but I am pretty close so.. It's great though. And they're opened until at least 11:00 pm every night so it's wonderful.
I'm going to be honest - not a complete fan like others, however, for a take-out place, this is some of the best Chinese I've had in the city... disclaimer - that doesn't mean I think this is the Chinese in the city, but it's pretty decent. Huge portions and great prices - especially the lunch specials. For a mere $5.75 plus tax/tip one can get more than one serving of an entree, rice (or friend rice) and your choice of wonton/egg drop soup or egg roll. Seriously good deal. The egg drop soup was good but could use a bit more salt - I suppose one could add that themselves though. The orange chicken is pretty good, as was the friend rice. My only real complaint was delivery time - of course I placed a group order just after Noon so it was a prime delivery time on a yucky day, but it took an hour for the food to come and it was clear that we were not the first delivery - our food was not exactly steaming hot. That said, given the price and amount of food, I think I'll be ordering again.
Being this is one of the only Chinese food places that deliver I guess it's ok. Being use to eating good Chinese takeout food, I think I'm a fair judge of quality. I've eaten here a few times and have ordered take out a few times. Everything I get from here is just ok. Nothing outstanding, nothing really good. If you use general Tsao's chicken as a baseline to judge how good the Chinese food is, it's below average. Their other dishes are also just ok.
