I had always heard mixed reviews about Kitchen 233, so even though I've lived in the area for almost three years, I never went out of my way to test the waters.  When my date last Friday suggested the bar there as our backdrop for drinks, I was excited for the opportunity to finally check the place out for myself.

The hostesses were friendly and informed me that there are two bar areas.  Unfortunately, the more open-air bar towards the back was reserved for a private party midway through the evening, so I went directly to the main bar.  I loved the set-up of the entire restaurant, which is very open, yet darkly decorated.  It's unlike any other restaurant in the area and was a chic change.

The happy hour specials included some half priced appetizers and reduced wines by the glass, but we both opted for the Blue Russian, which was a vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives.  The glasses were small but the mini shakers were served alongside for another half-pour.  Very nice.  We ordered the sesame seared ahi tuna, spicy rock shrimp and calamari appetizers.  All three were good, not the best ever.  If I were to pick only one of the three to have again it would be the tuna.

Two large flat screen TVs displayed that never-ending, extra-innings Phillies game, which was still a lot less painful to watch than Sidney Crosby holding the Stanley Cup while allegedly blowing off the end-of-game handshake.  (I'm not bitter.  Nope, not me!)  My final drink of the night was the Kitchen Cosmo, which was deliciously light and a perfect summer drink.  Sadly, my head did not agree the following morning when I had to wake up for a 5K race.

I will definitely return for drinks, hopefully on the patio area next time.  The jury is still out on whether I would be up for a dinner experience.

Restaurant Week. Brothers' birthday celebration. Cool interior, candle cubbies in the large dining room. Very bizarre and inappropriate music, including a perverted version of "Tainted Love" and several late 90s songs.

Fried calamari for appetizer. Delicious, light, crispy, not greasy. Best I've ever had. Also tasted the corn chowder with crab, which had very little crab but was nonetheless fairly yummy.

Had the roasted beet salad, which came with goat cheese and supposedly had an orange viniagrette. Absolutely nothing special, including the *slice* of heirloom beet.

Had the chicken with mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus entree. Chicken was tender, fine. Mashed potatoes were bomb. Overall the dish probably is not worth menu price.

Cheesecake dessert was delicious. Rich with white chocolate sauce and strawberries.

Wait staff friendly. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was extremely tasty and just $8 a glass. In the end, though, there isn't much reason to go back.

Went there for the first time as soon they've opened. Tried it again later and in the end, can't recommend this place. Too many negatives...
First, both time we actually went, the service was bad... the second time, they messed up our reservation and the third time they messed up the reservation again (and we just left)....
Secondly, the decor and the menu meant to present you with an upscale place... sadly, the quality is no where near (and when you include steep prices, it's even worse...)
Two time we went there, although they have a private parking lot, there were no spots and navigating behind the building (when you include people who don't know how to drive) is at least a challenge...

Beautiful room, very good food, attentive service and well-made drinks.

My scallops were big and tender though missing the porcini dust.  My date's seafood fra diavlo was 'outstanding.'  One of the best Caesar salads around and a wonderful wine selection.

We lingered over our dessert and there was no pressure to move out.

It's pricey, but worth it for a special night.

I didn't realize until afterward that Kitchen 233 was owned and operated by the same folks who own Chophouse, the best steak restaurant in all of the tri-state area (they also own the PJ Whelihan's franchise).  These people really know how to do steak.

My boyfriend and I are HUGE meat eaters, and its nice to know that there is a casual steakhouse in South Jersey as well as a more formal one within a few miles.  We went on a rainy weeknight and weren't interested in a lot of fanfare (we never are), and what we got was perfectly prepared food, good and attentive service and great atmosphere.

There was a nine-year-old's birthday party happening near us, which didn't bother us, and a sports loving crowd at the bar enjoying the Sixers game.  So, that's the type of restaurant this is: one where you can bring the kids but also chill on your own.

This place is the shit. I never knew it was possible for such a great place to exist in south Jersey.

The building is a very impressive, cutting-edge design that is unique and edgy. Great bar and indoor seating area as well as a second patio section that rivals some of the nicer lounges in Philly. Would be an awesome place to have a private party or to bring clients.

The food that I had was absolutely phenomenal. I had three appetizers as my dinner: Summer veggie soup, a filet dish and some kind of spicy gnocci.

Great wine list with a sizable selection of by-the-glass wines. I had a cappuccino afterwords that was the best i've had outside of starbucks or a legit cafe.

The staff was very friendly and the service was better than expected. Also, all of the girls working there were hot. The only downside to this place is that it's on the other side of the Delaware. I will definitely return to Kitchen 233.

the last time i ate here with my fiance, i ordered scallops. they were horribly over-cooked. (sauteed rubber comes to mind.) my fiance's steak was nothing to write home about, nor were the sides.

however, the wine list is great and so are their martinis. i suggest sticking to the bar area for drinks and desserts. the entrees are way overpriced for the mediocre quality.

This review is set a bit high and hear me out as to why.  I would NOT recommend going here to eat a meal.  The dinner is only so so and with what you are going to pay you would/should expect better.  The appetizers and deserts are good and a bit different.  So if in the mood for something light or something sweet, by all means go for it.  The reason the review is high, however, is because to my knowledge there is not another martini bar even close by.  The bar here is awesome.  The drinks are strong and plentiful.  If you are into wine they have a huge selection and a nice wine storage/dispenser type thing right behind the bar.  My suggestion:  sit at the bar, get martinis, maybe snack or desert a little.  Nice!

Had a girls night out there yesterday!
It was my first time there.
Sat on the patio.  Its a beautiful place.
The menu looked amazing.  the other girls had the 4 course menu,
I ordered off the regular menu.  We all tried each others.  Everything was delicious.
The wine was great.  nice big selection.

Ugh. I should have been more skeptical of a PJ Wehlihan's owned establishment which tries to pass for a fine dining experience. Food and service were mediocre and not worth the price.

Quick rundown that turned the stomach.

GIANT dried lugie hanging in the bathroom. That thing had to be there for at least 3-5 days. Its right at eye level in the men's room. Gross.

Hair in our bread basket

Fly in my water. After I discovered it, I put the glass off to the side and was waiting for our server to come over to discuss, and someone came by, refilled the glass, and was off.

After living the urban life in LA and Portland, it was a nice to surprise to come back to my hometown on a visit and experience this restaurant.  I don't feel like I need to venture into Philly for fine/fun dining. A group of 4 of us sauntered in late and were introduced to what felt like a dining experience in Italy. With the outdoor seating, long wine list, and great entrees, including amazing appetizers and desert (not to mention coffee and espresso), it was a truly great South Jersey dining experience. (the only reason the last star is missing is because of the price : )

SO GOOD. SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. pricey, but worth it. very chophouse-esque (which would make sense because its owned by the same people). i can't get over how nice it looks inside. the building used to be a crappy little pizza place and i am amazed at how they transformed it. the menu is short but that made it even harder for me to pick an entre. between the starters and entres, they brought out little cups of "wild mushoom cappuchino". it was just a little sip of some kind of broth all fluffed up in an espresso cup and it was THE BEST SIP OF ANYTHING IVE EVER HAD. i had a wonderful skirt steak with a black truffle salad, and a chocolate something for dessert. their wine list is apparently what makes this place so great- it was the longest wine list ive ever seen, and apparently a really good one, i dont know anything about wine. but this place is really great. i loved it.
