The old man was sleeping off his graveyard shift when I made the executive decision to pull off the freeway and get breakfast. I had planned for Denny's because it's a safe bet, but when we spotted Kit Carson right across the street we decided to take a chance.

It's a chance  I'm glad we took. The service was stellar, with the waitress acknowledging regulars and getting to know newbies. The food was pretty goddamn good and cheaper than Denny's, if you can believe that.

I had the Bearcat  Breakfast Sandwich which consisted of homemade toasted bread, sausage, cheddar and and egg over-medium. It was so 'effin good! The old man had some omelet that was served with avacado art on top. He also got a homemade scone with his breakfast and I was seriously jealsou because it was awesome.

For all future trips to Seattle, I think this will be a regular breakfast stop.

This "down home" joint didn't scimp on my portion size. I got the Mt. St Helen explosion and it was a heaping size full of food, so come hungry. It was an average tasting meal, nothing stood out as a wow.
The gravy was good and the potatoes were plentiful, but that made up 80% of the dish, which was $9.95 . My orange juice was watered down, and the old woman who waited on us, should get out of the waiting business and start working back of the house. She was pretty un-pleasant. Can't imagine I'll ever stop back....

First off, the best reason to go to Kit Carson's is because you don't know about the Olympic Club, just one or two exits North along I-5.  That said, it's the only other non-chain restaurant in town.

I am curious about the seafood but not brave enough to try it. They got fresh crab, shrimp and steamer clams on the menu but the place feels like a cross between Denny's and Chuckie Cheese. Strange little place. A bit sketchy.

This is cheap freaking food, my friend.  You'll forgive it if the bottom half of your sandwich comes out a little soggy or if the lady in the pink apron forgets to bring you a napkin to go with your greasy meal.  Its freaking.

Curiously, there is plenty of seafood on the menu.  I wasn't brave enough to try it because the menu didn't really give me enough information and I was afraid to ask.

There is a Pepsi fridge full of marbled beef by the front door.  As a city-slicker accustomed to the look of lean grass-fed beef, it was a pretty sad sight.

I still give 4 stars because I'm surprised this place exists.  In a town thats been beaten down by recession and taken over by Denny's and Apple Bee's, I'm surprised to see this kitchy little totem of the Northwest still standing.

So when your food comes, just shut up and eat it.  It's food.  It's good for you.  And get a postcard on your way out.  Tell all your friends about it.

Quick Tip: They don't know about such modern amenities as "handicap accessibility" or "vegetarian menus" so don't ask.

If it wasn't for Sunday church letting out I'm sure this place would be desolate. Our waitress, I'll call Peg suffered from ADHD-I'm sure of it. Do us all a favor Peg and take your medication before work. We got someone else's bill and gave me my boyfriends meal. Hmmmm. As always I ordered my eggs over easy and they came with the whites runny. I about puked in my plate half way through. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because the Payton walking out while we were walking in half the door for us. Oh redemption.

I am totally disabled due to mobility issues, On three occasions I was denied access to the Kit Carson Restaurant because of a locked rear door.  The handicap entrance is located at the rear of the building where supplies are unloaded for the restaurant.  This entrance was locked again today.  There is not any way for a handicap person (who has mobility issues) to alert the restaurant staff that he or she wishes to gain entrance to the restaurant when he or she is at the loading dock.   There are no bells to ring or intercom systems for handicap people to use.

The front entrance is very steep and requires the ability to navigate multiple stairs which I cannot do.  Today, 8 June, 2011,  my wife and I wanted to eat at this restaurant but the door was again locked.  A staff person came out of the kitchen door for a break (this door is for employees only).  We told him we wanted access to the restaurant and he went back inside to get the key.  He returned and said "no Key" you have to go to the front door".
The first couple times, ok, but enough is enough. My wife went into the restaurant to complain.   She spoke to the day manager, Deanna.  Deanna  stated that the door remains locked and can be opened by a staff person if they pushed outward on the door.  When my wife asked Deanna how would a handicap person let staff know they wanted in to eat, she smirked and shrugged her shoulders.  My wife got very upset with Deanna's lack of concern and care regarding handicap patrons using this restaurant.
We are going to follow up with a complaint to the proper government agency.  The ADA states in part, " access shall not be denied to persons with disabilities".
The Kit Carson restaurant does have 2 handicap parking stalls and a locked rear door  ...The problems as I see them are:
the lack of staff awareness of when a handicap person wishes to come inside;   The lack of adequate communication for handicap patrons to alert the staff inside of admittance desired  and staff persons and management are not educated on how to assist people with disabilities.

My recommendation:  If you are disabled due to mobility issues find another restaurant that treats handicap people with respect and allows entrance to their restaurants.  Sincerely, Ted Ward

Really, there aren't many choices in this area that aren't fast food.  So we were starving and had been driving for 3 hours and needed food!  The outside looked as if it had been newly remodeled, but the inside was fashioned as a very small Dennys-ish diner.

Service was friendly and fast.  I ordered the soup/salad bar ($7.99) which was adequate.  The rest of the family had pancakes($2.99), a club w/fries($8.99), and a "works" roast beef sandwhich ($8.99). All were decent, it fit the bill!  Portions were quite large.  I don't know if they make it or if it is sent in, but the breads are fresh baked and tasty.

I don't know if I would seek it out again, but would definitely choose it over the fast food choices in the area.

Ah, Kit Carson. Older than I am probably. This place has always been around and it hasn't changed much over the years.

My family got together for a post-Christmas final outing before my Mom and brother had to go their respective ways back home. The food has always been good as long as I can remember. I go here sporadically and usually only because it's one of the few restaurants at which my grandparents will eat, so keep that in mind for what it's worth.

I had a sirloin steak with a baked potato. The pre-meal salad was a little long in the tooth. Some of the lettuce had begun to turn transparent. Plus the kitchen has a tendency to smother it with red onion rings, which I don't like. I gave them to my brother who had stank breath the rest of the night.

It has a homey kind of cozy atmosphere and the staff are friendly. Our server in particular was very good. Plus you can order sandwiches made on homemade bread. This bread is also served with most meals and has a sweet, fresh taste to it.

It's a good place to meet with a large group and there's even a bar in the back area where you can catch the game if that's your thing.

On the way home from Mt. St. Helens we exited the freeway to hit a Jack In the Box.  On the way there we noticed this restaurant and decided to try it out.

The restaurant is divided into the front seating area and the banquet room in the back.  The banquet room serves as overflow when the restaurant is busy.  We were a little disappointed with how the main restaurant area looked, but the banquet hall was nice.

Food was good.  We ordered chicken nachos and Kit's Combo for appetizers and both were great.  The fried mushrooms were good, and I don't even like mushrooms!

For entrees we had chicken cordon bleu, chicken fried steak, and steaks.  Everyone thought it was very good.  The chicken fried steak was HUMONGOUS.  Next time I'll see if I can order the senior citizen size as it was literally as wide as a loaf of bread (see pic)!  My wife said her chicken cordon bleu was on par with our neighbor's, which is a huge compliment.

We were really surprised that the meal was as good as it was considering the location.  I was debating between 3 and 4 stars and went with four simply because this place is out in the middle of no where and they're so close to the freeway that they could probably get by with lower quality food and still generate a lot of traffic.

My parents started taking us to this place when we were like 5 years old! I am now 49 and the food is the same and still reminds me of being a kid.. My Uncle still eats here every day.. if your traveling through town headed to Portland or Seattle you have to stop and give it a try!

Stopped on our way back from Portland to Seattle.  We were starving and found decent reviews on yelp.  Service was slow.  Every phase was slow.  Stood with four children in a third full restaurant for 7 minutes waiting to be seated.  Sat for 10 minutes waiting in booth for order to be taken.  Took 25 minutes for food to come and then waited at register for 7 minutes waiting for someone to take money for bill.  Food was average.  Scones were homemade, everything else was made from frozen.  Bathrooms were dirty.  Not a fan of the place.

Typical diner food.  Serves breakfast to dinner.  Good homestyle cooking.
