I know it's not as expansive as some of the other farmers markets in town, but because of that fact, it's not as packed and you can find some of the best deals and freshest produce around from this place.
I love walking through this place on a Saturday and filling up on the free samples that all the stands have left out. You can make a lunch easily on the fresh fruits and veggies and after trying most of them, you will end up leaving with your arms full of bags. The kettle corn I bought here was delicious and I finished my bag (embarassingly enough) on the way home. Also, because Kirkwood is so cute, if it's a hot day (which in the summer it usually is) you can easily pop into any of the dozens of stores along this street to cool off and take a break.
My lovah and I caught this on the LAST day it was open (silent tears). They were trying to clean up shop and get everything out, so we were sure to take advantage of some of the love. Most of what we bought was stickered and shipped in from market (8 bucks on everything we needed for dinner!).
They have a darling little permanent structure, but it can't house much, so this probably isn't the best place to do your weekly shopping (as you can with Soulard in the summer). The people running it were very pleasant, happy to be there, and still excited to talk about the market. There is one check out area. I didn't pay with a card, but I think they have the facilities to take plastic.
Dewey's Pizza is right around the corner. The Highlands is across the street. There are also a couple of locally-owned gardening stores nearby (My brother bought a praying mantis pod there when we were kids. They hatched in the house and we were catching the little guys for days after). I'm a dork, and I like to go sit at the train station and watch for trains. I'd suggest going Kirkwood's way when you want some slower-paced leisure time.
There is also a kickass Global Foods Market right up the road on Lindbergh you can hit for anything you couldn't get at outdoor market. I can't wait to go back and see this market in full bloom.
Kirkwood Farmers Market is a fantastic place to get really fresh produce. My sister and I went on Thursday to get her entered in the Peach Pie Contest and to purchase her peaches. The guy in the middle of the market had peach samples, and I must say that I have never had a better peach in my life. He said that they grow them in the boot heel of Missouri. I bought a pound, and I didn't even need any. They were very ripe when I got them, and are still good today even though it has been three days.
Everyone there was quite helpful, and there were beautiful products all around. The train tracks are right behind the market, and it can lead to hysterical moments when you are trying to talk to one of the merchants and a train engine drives past, because no one can here anyone else. You can purchase food and there is also a nursery area that sells normal nursery plants, Missouri wildflowers and even some stranger plants like wormwood. There are plenty of places to sit, and there are little shops that sell small meals like meat kabobs and wraps.
If you're going to be in Kirkwood on the weekend, you might as well stop at the Kirkwood Farmer's Market. They have fresh produce and meats and some prepared foods like a soup stand (pretty freaking expensive, but yummy) and pies.
The thing is that there wasn't much here that made me want to come to the area just for the Farmer's Market. Everything that I could find here can also be found elsewhere.
Really, Kirkwood is where it's at. I love having an excuse to go there. Though the market is small, it's really charming and truly is a place locals go to gather for a bit of community.
Afterwards, you can go to one of the darling restaurants in Kirkwood or just hang out on one of the benches in the area or take a stroll.
Experience the charming community that is Kirkwood. The farmers market is by no means large but it makes up for it with character.
Fun for kids, always good food. And in the summer you have to try a snow cone from Tropical Moose- voted the best snow cone in St. Louis.
I live out in the West county, so I'd rather not make the trek out to Soulard on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this is a tiny tiny farmer's market.
The thing that baffles me is that we are in the heart of acres of farms, there is just no excuse for such a piddly market! Seriously, you shouldn't be able to spit and not hit fresh veggies. There has to be a bigger farmer's market west of the city that no one has clued me in to yet!
It's definitely cute, but there's almost as much in the way of prepared food as there is produce. The stand with live plants is awesome, but it easily makes up a quarter of the market on its own.
There's angled street parking right near by, and all parking in the area is free. All of the whole Kirkwood Junction area is pretty charming. Worth stopping by if you live near by, or coming by for a Saturday afternoon once or twice in the summer, but this isn't the kind of farmers' market that will get you out of bed early on the weekend.
This market is small, but like others have said, it is definitely charming. There's a pavilion nearby to rest your feet, plenty of seating, and little outdoor food venues. I've even seen them selling kettle corn on the less hot and humid days (which are rare). But everyone loves Kirkwood so the key here is location. The shops nearby are quaint and entertaining. While the market itself is nice, it's certainly not the king of queens.
