This place is solid.

I went here last night with my boyfriend to see Sideswipe Live with Matt Mullins and his crew.  The lobby is spacious and well lit with comfortable seating.  There's a bar available at your convenience.  Wine, coffee, tea, munchies?  They've got 'em.

Inside, the theater seats were cozy.  Any seat high or low would give you a great view of the stage.  The sound was crisp and clear.  On top of that... the show started on time.  Awesome.

This is a great place for people of all ages.  I would definitely return here for another show when the opportunity presents itself.

Helpful tip: you can find free parking at the City Hall off of Duquense Ave.  Drive into the structure and head toward the left side until you see some stairs.  Park there, because the stairs would lead you back to the surface across from the theater.

Dear Center Theater Group,

Have I told you today that I love you, and that I love your theaters. Today I went to the Kirk Douglas Theatre for the first time. I have been to the Ahmenson and the Mark Taper, but this trip to the Kirk Douglas was my maiden voyage. After hearing such great things about The Bengal Tiger at the Bagdhad Zoo, I decided to see if there were any Hot Tix left for one of the performances. I was in luck, and there were! And although the woman who answered the phone was an absolute bitch to me, I don't care, I still love you and your theaters.

As usual, when you promise me my tickets by mail in a few days, they arrive right on time. I opened your letter and found two tickets to the show, 4th row, for $20 a piece, granted it was all the way to the left, but DAMN these seats are good. Thanks for hooking me up. When I arrived, I found easy FREE parking in a nearby structure, and walked up to the entrance. Your staff is pleasant, especially Toni at the concession stand. Excellent job hiring great people... I walked into the theater and just like the Mark Taper, there is not a bad seat in the house. Even the back row had a spectacular view.

Your production of The Bengal Tiger at the Bagdhad Zoo was fantastic. All of your actors were fantastic. The sets were fantastic. I have nothing bad to say about this production or your theater. So I just want to thank you again for you continuous dedication to my entertainment. I appreciate all of your hard work and believe me, you will be seeing much more of me during this 2009-2010 season.

With love and admiration,
Stephanie H.

This is a great place to catch a show. The theater is rather small, yet cozy. Free parking is available nearby, and you can always grab a drink at the bar.

My favorite theater in the city of Angeles. Stand aside Ahmanson, Taper, Geffen, Freud Playhouse, Royce Hall. All of those are good but this one is better.

Not a bad seat in the house. I do mean that. But, avoid the first three rows if you can. It's too good of a view...

As a venue for ground-breaking theater, this stage is perfect both acoustically and visually. The staff has never not been friendly, and the plays they choose to stage here are always well chosen. The lounge features a bar and snacks; you can take water in but slam that wine before curtain! Nearby parking is free for several hours and inexpensive after that.

I just saw the play Taking Over here starring Danny Hoch, which everyone needs to see, and I enjoyed my theater experience. First of all, there was free parking in the City Hall parking garage across the street. Secondly, there are so many restaurants within walking distance to the theater. And third, but most important, it's a beautiful intimate theater experience. The place is designed well, there is a bar, and the night we came there was a DJ after the play in the lounge.

If you want to experience good theater, you should really come here. They make it affordable, and they showcase some great plays. Everyone should see TAKING OVER!

This is a fantastic theater.  Not a bad seat in the house.  The bathrooms are clean and plentiful. The lobby is well decorated and well kept.  Every staff person I have encountered has been friendly and helpful and polite.
I have seen three shows at this theater, and I have to say that they have been three innovative, interesting and exciting productions.  Quality programming.

I was able to park for free at the City Hall parking lot, just south of Culver on Duquesne.

This theater is beautiful, historic and is a fantastic jewel atop Culver City's shining crown.

I too saw Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson here.  It was my first time to the Douglas Theater.  I was very impressed with the place.  If I had to describe it in one word, (dare I use it?) I would say "cute."  There's a real attempt to give it its original charm from its heyday.  They've even out the Culver Theater sign lit up.

There's a little bar in the front area of the theater--nice to mingle and grab a beverage.  I think I saw some Red Stripe.... ohh!

The theater itself was small.  I didn't expect it to be so, especially at the price I was paying for tickets (not Hot Tix, unfortunately).  At that price, I should really consider getting season tickets... I digress.  Okay, so the theater is tiny, but every seat seems like a pretty decent seat.  If I remember correctly, I was seated in row F or G, which was close to being eye-level with the stage.  Perfecto.  I think that if I had to sit any lower or higher, my neck would have hurt (especially since the show didn't have an intermission).

The theater is ideally located in Downtown Culver City, so it's in walking distance of a lot of places to eat, which is pretty nice and then you can make a whole evening of the event.

There is complimentary parking by City Hall.  If you want to risk it, you can park at the WaMu across the street.

Even though this has bearing on the theater itself, I'd like to mention this--the guy with the Center Theater Group I purchased tickets on the phone from was awesome.  Great customer service--very delightful to work with.  Maybe I really should consider season tickets....

i spent a lot of time in bam (brooklyn academy of music), when i lived in Brooklyn, which is one of my all time favorite performance spaces, for its theater, the movie theaters and its lounge/restaraunt...i imagine the UCLA live wire programs are very much like what events were taking place at bam.  it's actually been a very long time since i've been to 'the theater' in LA.  The Pantages, Dorothy Chandler, and the Mark Taper Forum, i have no idea what to make of the redux of the mark taper...i just hope it doesn't get any bigger.

i had never been to the kirk douglas and never thought heads or tails about it until the man i'm dating mentioned that he wasn't so fond of musicals, and being an atypical reactionary, i thought to myself..."that can't be true! because after all what kind of person doesn't love musicals...?"

now mind you as much as i love the standards, classic musicals, i'm a very modern woman who appreciates innovation and adaption in one of my most loved of vehicles. and the musical is one of my favorite places to see such innovations. remember the musical tv show cop rock? or the one about the girls of the orphanage in the 50's?  i do! because i love musicals! and anyone who is interested in getting to know me should find at least one musical they can truly apprecitate...

now since i am a very modern girl, i don't expect a novice to jump at the socio political value of show boat! or to understand the fact that west side story was revolutionary in bringing current events of the lower east side to the nation. how angels in america was a work of beauty born out of the devastation of AIDS. how Hedwig and the angry inch raised the bar in its rock score and tranny love. or even be interested in the pure entertainment value of Victor/Victoria!

So in an effort to see a show i suspect will take NYC by storm  and introduce the man on the scene to the value of dramatic story framed in song, i invited said man to see bloody bloody andrew jackson with me friday night.

it just so happens that this fucking funny and brilliant tribute to the bloody bloody 7th president of the US, and school house rock  as MOTA put it, was in just as lovely a theater. gallery seating made me as happy as the show's opening with stadium lights.

300 seats small, not a bad seat in the house, named after a fine actor, free parking at city hall a block away, can't be beat. until next time kirk...

I love this theater.  Not a bad seat in the house.  And I just saw Taking Over.  AMAZING.  A must see.  After the show we had a drink at Bottle Rock and dinner at Ford's Filling Station.  What a great night!

The three-hundred seat Kirk Douglas Theatre is the newest addition to the complex of theatres run by the Center Theatre Group.  Its sisters are downtown at the Music Center, the Ahmanson and the Mark Taper Forum, while the Douglas is a new addition to the burgeoning Culver City arts scene.  Its brightly-lit marquee is an instant landmark in downtown Culver City and its renovated lobby is both welcoming, understatedly plush, and looks a little bit like a club, with its low-slung, cushioned benches  under a low ceiling.  You can see its movie-theatre beginnings in its marquee, its front facade and its box-office, and when you step into the actual theatre itself, you can feel it in its straightforward proscenium stage and the high rake of the audience.  Originally conceived to house the CTG's more adventurous developmental work, it's veered slightly away from its mission, but the plays are still usually more interesting and daring (and often ethnic) than what one will usually see downtown.  Right now, it's got a show written by an African American/Zimbabwean woman that is funny, heartbreaking, and amazingly fluid, called IN THE CONTINUUM.  I won't tell you what it's about, because then you won't go see it, but trust me...you'll be glad you went.  The two performers are amazing, one evoking a slice of Zimbabwean society, the other evoking an entire community of African American women in LA.

Next up, a show that takes place in the Phillippines during the go-go 1980s that's absolutely breathtaking in its epic sweep (I saw an earlier production of it in a tiny little theatre in Silver Lake last year).  But in any case, the Westside is lucky to have such a beautiful yet intimate theatre in its own backyard, and so far, I've thoroughly enjoyed almost everything I've seen there.  Take a date, s/he'll think you're classy, smart, and unexpectedly attractive!

The Kirk Douglas Theatre is a great theatre ---it's relatively small with 300+ seats and there's not a bad seat in the house. The plays that they show there are always interesting and its always a surprise to see who's playing there.

The tickets are affordable and there's great restaurants that are located nearby. If you're looking for something to do on the Westside, go to the Kik Douglas Theatre.

This is such a great place to see a show.  For an evening performance parking is free/no hassle at City Hall, and there isn't a bad seat in the house.  Easy walking distance to lots of great restaurants.  You can find $20 tickets through the entertainment stimulus thing (formerly hot tix?).

I came here to catch a showing of Dogeaters, last January.  I'm accustomed to the traditional Civic Center layout, but I fell in love with this indie-like layout.  I sat on the first row mid-center, but I felt like I could have tripped one of the characters several times as they ran across the front of the stage.  So, when purchasing tickets, you may want to sit on a second or third row as the entire theatre is on an incline and viewing is unobstructed regardless of placement.  -- stars given based on category, not food

"EMOcracy"...."JAX ROX"...these were signs held up during CTG's production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the play that i had the pleasure of watching yesterday.

now, coming from the northeast valley, all the way to culver city was a feat...and getting through all those friggin' lights down culver was ridiculous...but once i found this place...it was all gravy.  i parked across the street from the free parking at city hall...why i parked across the street rather than in the free parking still escapes me...i guess i like a good challenge.

once i walked into the theatre, i thought the place was friggin' adorable!  nicely decorated...very hip.  i dug the way they placed a cut out display of AJ on a horse, with a cut-out face...a la carnival style...just add  a different face; a tee-pee behind one of the ticket takers; and a stuffed buzzard...very weird and quirky...definitely my scene.  the bar was also a nice touch...a place to waste money and buy time before the show.

since my meter is constantly on brokeus pokus...i got the cheap seats..which were not at all bad seeing how every  seat is a good seat.  i caught the 1pm matinee of BBAJ...no intermissions - straight thru...no problem.

i definitely dug this place...it was well worth the drive and getting thru all the traffic light confusion.  i'll definitely be back for other plays.  and if you haven't already caught BBAJ you should put in on your radar...there still might be some cheap seats available!

I just saw Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the emo-rock musical and have such an appreciation for CTG and the Kirk Douglas Theatre space!  What a great venue and not a bad seat in the house.  I was fortunate enough to get a $20 Hot Tix at the box office on the night of the show.  Free parking...comfortable seats and a great season with cutting edge works.  You can't beat it.  Check it out!

What an awesome theatre!  Any seat in the house is good because they are all super close to the stage, and show production was on par with the rest of the Center Theatre Group's shows.   We watched a frenetic production of "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson" there, and had the best time.
