Neighborhood: Southwest PortlandI make it a really important point to go to these stores every time we're close by. There's always some magazine or manga or art book or CD I need! This one in the back of Uwajimaya was pretty nice, kinda small, but had all the necessities. They had a good selection of soundtracks also, but I only allow myself to buy $30. imports only once in a while... so I picked out a CD5 of Gake no Ue no Ponyo!
The Kinokuniya in SF is my favorite, the old one in New York was maybe a little bigger (we went there before the grand opening of the new one..), but this one still hits the spot.
I really need half stars, ah well. In my book this is a 3.5 star store because of the limited size and selection for English only readers.
Now I realize this is a Japanese book store but compared to the ones I have been to in Japan Town San Francisco, and many in Los Angeles the selection is paltry.
Strong Areas for English Readers:
Artists: They do offer a sizable manga and art section. If you enjoy some of the very talented modern artist from Japan you will have a hard time not walking out of here with at least one Monograph.
Students: They had a great selection of books geared towards learning Japanese. They also had a large children's section which can also be useful when learning.
There but paltry:
Japanese Culture, Coffee table books and cooking books.
Pretty much missing:
In depth books on history, deeper exploration of the culture and religion. Also many other stores offer a wider selection of traditional woodcut artists.
A fun place to visit and browse but not the best.

I you are interested in manga and you want to know where's the best place to buy what you need in order to make your own manga, then this is where you want to be. They've got the art paper, pens, pencils, toner sheets, copic markers and how to's to help you. PLUS they have a great selection of manga to look at along with art books that you can't find anywhere else. I have to stress that the manga is in Japanese but that shouldn't detour you to not give it a look. Enjoy.

Located inside of Uwajimaya's, Kinokuniya bookstore is a wonderful place to spend your money. While most of the books are written in Japanese, there are some great craft books.
Also, fabulous stationary!
