It's clear that they peppered my 'hood with their menu this past weekend - it was on nearly every apartment building door - and it definitely struck me... as I was returning from a weekend away, the thought of Chinese was PERFECT. So, my husband and I decided to give it a whirl - however, the last time we ordered chinese in Astoria (a year or so ago) it was downright horrific. We were very much afraid, but prepared to order the pizza as backup if this went terribly wrong.

King Garden - you pleasantly surprised us. The food was pretty quick in terms of delivery, the delivery guy was super-friendly (even though he treked up 5 flights of stairs to bring it to us).... and the food was downright delicious. Freshly prepared, very tasty and yes, well-cooked brown rice was a pleasant surprise. I think the previous reviewer noted they actually have PORK chunks in their pork-fried rice. Whoa! What a concept.

We loved the crab rangoons, steamed dumplings (with nice thin shells instead of those thick, doughy exteriors). Steamed shrimp & broccoli was also rather tasty and my hubby ate every last bite of the General Tso's. We'll re-order. Thanks so much for heading our way for your "marketing" :) Even with a chinese place practically next-door, we're going to stick with King Garden.

Two stars is definitely low in my books since I'm usually pretty generous with the whole star thing, but man ...

OK let's start with the good stuff. The Chinese food was definitely very typically Americanized-Chinese. It's not authentic Chinese like how ma makes it. But definitely worth the few bucks you pay. Laden with msg. Took my buddy here (he's non-asian and not from around town) and he loved it. Fair enough, I give you that.

For some unknown reason on a Sunday morning, I craved sushi and since I lack counterparts in the neighbourhood, I ventured here by myself and .... hm. It was officially the worst sushi I've ever had in my life. And I come from Vancouver, where the city is PACKED with budget sushi joints. Like, over 300 sushi places. Some awesome, some ghetto. So, I KNOW bad sushi. And it was SO bad, I couldn't even eat it. That bad. Because I always, always, eat EVERYTHING.

OK. I think I've ripped them apart enough here. They were nice people even though the place was a dump. Good fake-chinese, stay away from sushi.

King Garden: the hidden gem of 34th ave. King Garden may look like another greasy Chinese bodega, but it has much more to offer than average New York Chinese fare. First of all: the fresh (raw) salmon sushi is so good. I am a salmon snob, and it never disappoints. The hand rolls are not as good quality when it comes to the fish, but the sushi and sashimi are amazing. They also have a ridiculous selection of "specialty" rolls like the Mexican Roll: tasty fish pieces, tempura flakes, rolled in taco seasoning. Genius. Another perk is the gigantic menu. They offer a full range of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. You can get quality General Tso's and a party platter of sushi in one place!! Really, the salmon is quite good, and the price is right. I frequent King Garden, and I am rarely, if ever, disappointed.

We ordered from here tonight, and I am awfully disappointed. My boyfriend's teriyaki chicken was ok... but ... my shrimp sushi, well, we saw it by chance otherwise would have devoured it all. Once we pulled the shrimp out of each sushi, we saw most were only half cleaned, meaning the shrimp were not completely deveined, they had not even tried, and I cannot believe they served me "shit"... when we called them the girl kept saying "what do you mean" when we said it was not deveined, not cleaned...
also, the smoked salmon was like raw... the rice and the rolls not impressive either.
i can easily say this was the worst sushi ever.

One of the best cheap Chinese places I've found in the city.  From the street it looks like any other storefront Chinese spot, but the food is much better than average.  High-quality veggies, never overcooked.  Nice tasty sauces, never too greasy.  They serve brown rice (and know how to cook it).  They also offer a full sushi menu, at great prices, and some other Japanese dishes.
