I agree with Ali Q to some extent. This hotel is cheap, convenient, and right in the heart of Solvang. What better location could you ask for?
We were able to leave our cars parked and do a proper tour of Solvang and experience all it had to offer. We just wish we had better lodging. Our room literally felt like a cell, I kid you not. We arrived in separate cars and they were only able to guarantee the safety of one. We have never had this issue at other Best Westerns so this was a surprise. The early check out time at 11AM was a surprise too. Or else we'd be automatically charged for another day! Give us a break, would you?
Our cell-like room came with paper thin walls, a pedestal sink (high maintenance ladies beware - there is no room for your makeup here), a soap dispenser (no cute little bottles for souvenirs), bathroom lights on a timer (conserving energy and going green?), two pillows on the bed at most (most places stock you up with more than you care for), and two small windows above the sink area and in the bathroom - forget about having a pitch black room to sleep in or getting any sleep at all. The room was adjacent to the parking lot and right off the 246. No only did we have the street light to keep us awake but all the traffic as well and when we finally did get some shut eye, the early morning sun was just as cruel as any rooster.
Other than that, I had some problems finding an electrical outlet for my phone charger and the notebook computer we had and the frat party next door kept us awake and entertained as well.
Overall, I really liked the fact that we were right in the heart of the downtown area and it was easy to get around. However, that convenience and cheap fare won't bring us back anytime soon. There are far better choices in Solvang that provide a great level of comfort but might be a little out of the way and require some exercise but that's great for us. We need some excuse to burn off all desserts this town offers in great abundance!

Well said, Ali D.
Hook yourself up with the managers special and walk out if they say no. You should pay around a hundred for a Friday or Saturday night, unless I got ripped off..
On the plus side, there was a fridge and a microwave in the room. The bed was OK. The location is excellent if you plan to do some walking around. If you don't plan to walk around, may I ask what you are doing in Solvang?
The maids are crazy wanting to clean your room. Also, beware the fucking teenage car wash they have on Saturdays. This may not be "the rule" but it was annoying enough to merit mention. Be prepared to wake up to a bunch of kids screaming, "Car WAAAAASH! GET A CAAAAAAAR WASH!"
If you are a light sleeper, bypass. AAGGHH!
But it wasn't that bad. 3 stars.

King Fredrick Hotel. 2 stars. For what I look for in a stay at a hotel ( see other reviews), this would be a avoid at all cost spot except for one saving grace, room 102. Directly next to the office, this room/studio apartment is really well done. Great kitchen w/ Stainless steel mod kit, Marble bathroom with custom fixtures, nice Prego hardwood floor, good Ikea stuff, TV. that has DVD, vicar and game plug inn's up front, in short, a nice home base for a family in the area in for something from Solvang to Santa Barbara.
Why a two, then? Nothing else passed muster, except customer service. This is a place you would see Tom Waits, chlorine so strong it might eat holes in you if you stay in for over a hour, Spa with jets the in last stage lung cancer, barfly/public elementary school breakfast. (That the have the nerve to call it "Continental"!) The room windows face the main drag, a narrow passage across from the ice machine, no views at all. However, the ice machine was quiet, the bed comfortable, a sofa bed and room for a roll-away, and the Sunday night in July, I stayed there, satisfactory for 147.00
A much better choice would the Royal Scandinavian Inn up the street, nice Continental breakfast, beautiful lobby, grounds, pool. I will stay there if I ever wonder through Solvang again. Qualifying note. I like stays that are nice; I want a level of quality valued over price. I will pay 300 for a memorable room if geography demands. I seek value because my comfort zone is 150 and below. I look for exceptional, out of the way places. off the path.
One cool everybody loves Earl moment, housekeeping had a pool party about 6:30, six deep, still in uni. Their raucous laughter swam across the chlorinated pool, surrounded by k-mart style, plastic white furniture.
So... think about it and please take your time, because this place is NOT for everyone.

This place is decent and convenient to Solvang and wineries nearby. It isn't incredible, but it gets the job done.
