Review from Mikey H.
Every time I'm out here, I have to stop here for lunch or dinner with the parents and have their minute boneless chicken with cake noodle. We were meeting up with my cousin, who lives in Alaska now, so I knew it would be a bountiful feast.
We ordered Won Ton soup for 10, gau gee, which look like flattened eggrolls (MMmmm), brasied tofu with vegetable, another favorite, char siu noodles, roasted chicken, and salt and pepper pork chops. But my all time favorite from here is the minute chicken and cake noodle. My aunt said I could probably make this at home but that's no fun. However, I don't know when I'll be out again, so maybe I should learn.
This is an old school kind of Chinese restaurant without having to trek over the hill to get to town. The place is always crowded and the parking lot has to be the worst! So, if you don't get a spot, you have to park in the neighborhood and walk....sometimes far. It's nothing fancy, so if you're one of those who loves eating at PF Changs and Panda Express, DO NOT COME HERE! No one on Yelp needs to hear your whiney ass complaining. If you can't hang with da locals, get the EFF out!
Me: Do you think that's healthy?
Mom: Probably not, but don't think about it.
My only concern was the workers either making won tons or gau gees in the dining room at one of the tables. I guess the kitchen must be pretty small, although it's not uncommon for Chinese restaurants to do that, the real ones. You can see that at some of the dim sum places in Chinatown. Also the waitresses are an interesting bunch. Not sure if some of them like their jobs or are just tired of waiting on indecisive people. Some of them are a little impatient.
Lots of locals, plenny haoles, and some big families. I will always come here whenever I'm home.Listed in: I wanna hula-hula...hula-hula

We usually head to Pah Ke's but heard they're chef has changed and it was not as good as in the past (cannot confirm that though) - I want to be fair.
We came with a group of folks. Had the Duck, Fun Chow noodles and several other dishes. Service was quick, friendly and the environment cozy (typical casual restaurant).
The food was fantastic and the price points very reasonable. I would totally recommend this place for really good Chinese food on the windward side. I wish I had tried the honey garlic chicken after reading the other reviews!
Cheers and happy eating! -

Char siu fried rice ($5.50) das been cooked hours in advance + nuked in a microwave prior to be served doesn't jive well with me.
I wouldn't even have an orphan in a third-world country eat this crap.
This bland, dry, and barely palatable abomination was served to me less den 5 minutes after I ordered it.
Apparently, da addah reviews are correct: dey serve everything so damn fast 'cuz dey probably cook it hours in advance + heat it up in da microwave.
My fried rice = uneven heat distribution. Some parts were lukewarm, while others were cold.
We ordered dat + a Special Plate "B" ($6.75): kau yuk, spareribs, beef broccoli, crispy gau gee, fried shrimp + rice. Halfway decent, but reheated fried rice just did me in.
We closed out our bill, paid for it + drove down to Pah Ke's faster den you can say "Ching, Chong, Chinaman!"

Our office ordered take out for new years and it was so dissapointing. I would have to say one of the worse chinese food I've had in a long time, if not ever. What was wierd was that every dish was bad, not just one or two. And it was so bad that everyone was really unhappy about the food. Normally we get mixed reviews at worse when something is ordered for the office. Not this time, it was 100% agreement. The scallop soup was like flavorless water. No one touched it. The beef brocolli was overcooked. The noodles were oily and bad tasting. The list went on and on. There was so much leftover and no one wanted to take it home. We pretty much threw it all out. Everyone complained about the $15 they each had to chip in. Im just glad it wasnt me who suggested this place.

Kin Wah is the best Chinese Restaurant on the entire Island! No I'm not saying that because I'm a windward resident ,I say it cause it's the truth :)
Ive dined here countless times and never been dissapointed. There's no guessing game as to what is good here because everything is. The restaurant is very casual no uptight feeling when you walk in. And the customer service here is awesome. From the time you walk in till the time you waddle out you always feel a welcome spirit in this place. The hostess, servers and cooks are all so very friendly and accommodating.
Great food and great people! Adore this place :) -

Hands down best fried rice on the island! I can make a meal out of it alone. But they also have a variety of other high-quality chinese foods that will leave you satisfied!

Review from Kylie O.
Not many Chinese restaurants in Kaneohe. It's either between Pah Ke's or Kin Wah. So tonight, decided to go to Kin Wah.
The best thing I love about Chinese food, the way it's served, family style. So you can orders lots of food, and just take home the rest for leftovers. When it came to ordering, we just order the usual: Scalloped soup, house noodle, taro duck, ginger chicken, and clams with black bean sauce.
The scalloped soup has always been a regular for me, and it's a good portion for about 3-5 people, depending on how much everyone eats. I had originally wanted the roast duck with the plum sauce, but compromised and got the taro duck instead. It may not be for everyone, the texture can be a little funky, but add some plum sauce to it, and it's great. The house noodles were mediocre, like any other noodles I've had, probably skip the noodles next time we go. Now my favorite part, clams with black bean sauce. They don't give much, so you know people are going to fight over it. But what I really enjoy, is the sauce. It's so savory, and adding that on top of rice is what gets me.
The service is typical, quick and straight to the point, how it's always been. No changing anytime soon. Parking can be a pain since it's in this little tiny shopping center, not to mention people are constantly going in and out since it's adjacent to a convenient store and a gas station. -

I confess, I have not been here in years. I cannot personally vouch for the current quality and service of this establishment. But Kin Wah's is easily my favorite childhood restaurant and I will forever sing their praises.
This is where I first discovered and fell in love with lemon chicken, hot tea in little porcelain cups and the Lazy Susan.
My palate may not have been as evolved as it is now and I'm sure you could easily find better quality elsewhere on the island but....
The semi fast-food, greasy homestyle vibe of the place just puts a smile on my face.... -

Kaneohe, HI
This place is always a nice get away. The food is satisfying and so far it never disappoints. If you are looking for a nice family get together and want some of the best Chinese perhaps in the '44 (Kaneohe).
Making bold statement that they are the best is no joking matter when it comes to Kaneohe.
One problem is that finding parking might be a little tough since it is hidden by the Aloha Gas Station. Other then that you are treated friendly by those that work there.
So Food is Good, Help is Good, Parking Good Luck! -

We ordered our food... and most of it was ready within 5-10 minutes. I like how they bring whatever is ready, instead of bringing it all at one time, by then everything is cold; and we're starving.
The Taro Duck is my favorite. Make sure you use the hot mustard sauce because it's a little dry. Egg Fuyong, walnut shrimp, & minute chicken with cake noodle is an automatic order; right off the bat.
They have a $5.00 chicken Salad lunch special going on right now. -
Review from Mike O.
Ill as in yuck (smell, dirty tables chairs and floors as you walk in,) is the first few precious moments you will have to think in a clear mind to say,,,,,,,is this restaurant for me? Can I come over the filthiness during my meal?
Acttually, I didnt have a choice as I was attending a family function.
1- noodles were very strange. wasnt ur usually crispy won ton min. It was fatter noodle in some gravy like sauce. YUCK.
2-The best thing that I ate that day was a less than stellar roast duck. it was below adequate but I was hungry and needed food.
3- Oh number three was a simple dish. Its bland, and white and we eat it at almost every meal. Yay rice...ALLEAST ILL HAVE RICE. NO NO was is that creature with long legs in there. THERES A DADDY LONG LEGS IN MY RICE.
4. placed chop sticks down and kindly excused myself. Another bite was not eaten or will ever be eating by my mouth forever.
If you are a sensible person that likes to eat in clean well maintained establishments, ahhh it aint here in Kin Wah. BOOOOO -
Review from Ka'ili H.
Monthly girls outings with my bests from high school have been going on since our sophomore year of college.
On our most recent outing, there were only three of us. We recently had the urge for some Asian goodness and initially decided on Tanaka Saimin. However, life and it's mishaps intervened, and the two townies (myself and my best Theresa ) headed over to the windward side to meet up with Amy.
I really wanted to go to a mom&pop and I was still craving some Asian food so, as Amy listed the different places available, we all ended up agreeing on Kin Wah. I've always wanted to try this place and I've tasted some of their dishes on one of our potlucks. We were excited and crossing our fingers that we'd find parking (it's a pretty tight parking lot).
This time, God intervened, and there was a space right in front of the restaurant. We were seated in a booth after waiting for about 10 minutes. We ordered four dishes.
1)Pork Hum Ha with Ong Choy: this is an acquired taste. I enjoyed it but could only have a small amount.
2) Shrimp fried rice: this was good. I thought the shrimp was cooked just right and they were very clean.
3)Crispy Gau Gee mein: This is one of my favorites because I love those crispy gau gees! The noodles were yummy and had the right amount of gravy. The pork inside the gau gee was delicious as well.
4) Our last dish was the Broccoli with Pork with cake noodle. Their cake noodle is the bomb!! i loved every single bite of it!
These dishes made me want to come back and try something else from this busy Chinese restaurant. It's also reasonably priced especially for the amount you get for it. The staff is here fast and they're always moving around. It took awhile for us to get refills of our waters, but, when we did they were nice and came out with boxes before we even asked for them!Listed in: Girl Time in the City, Mom&Pops, My proud yelpy moments!

Review from JJ L.
I'm not from Oahu, nor am I from the Windward side, which definitely rules out me being from Kaneohe.
With that said, i wasn't born and bred to be a devout follower of one of the three main Chinese joints in beautiful Kaneohe.
The lover swears by Kin Wah Chop Suey because that's where his family "always went" when he was growing up. However, my sister's husband is from the other side of Kaneohe and their family "always went" to New Mui Kwai (sounds something like that).
Bottom line -- as long as there aren't any moving tentacles, slimy skin and it's deep-fried and drowning in delicious black bean or sweet-and-sour sauce, I'm a fan.
You aren't going to be WOW'd here, you're just going to get what you can expect from a mainstay Chinese restaurant: consistently satisfying food for the binge-eating inclined. You'll want to come here with your family, or just make sure to not order too much. Even with our table of 7, there was too much food after ordering 6 dishes.
The wait staff is quick, the location is a little difficult to get to if you're coming from the H-3/HPU side. Parking is tight in front of the restaurant and the restaurant shares the crowded area with a gas station, convenience store, and several other small restaurants. -
Review from Alan Y.
To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what "chop suey" is. As far as I know, I've never heard of an analagous phrase in Mandarin. I always figured it to be a bastardized dish of assorted leftovers made by bachelor Chinamen, stranded on a foreign shore.
In their honor, we had the:
Kau Yuk - bbq pork in steamed buns, tasty
On Choy - tasty hollow stemmed greens
Clams in Black Bean Sauce - gritty, do you like sand?
Ginger Chicken - good, but don't let the bones split your palatte
Amazingly, our food came out within five minutes of our order. Amazing and disturbing, all at the same time. -

Yikes! So I went to eat at Kin Wah with my family last week and was uber disappointed! It was 7 years ago that this place was at the top of Chinese restaurants to frequent--not just in Kaneohe-but islandwide.
My hubby and I celebrated our wedding rehearsal there with a 7 course meal that was off the chains and leaving you wanting for the next and the next and the next course.
HOWEVER, this was DEFINITELY not the case last week. We stepped in on a Wednesday evening around 530p.m. The receptionist was friendly and nice and we were seated immediately.
We were seated at a booth and no sooner we sat down a waitress came over and asked us what we wanted to drink and if we were ready to order.
After reviewing the menu for around 5 minutes, she came back and took our order--shrimp canton, veggies and tofu with black bean sauce, vegetable chow mein, chicken with chinese peas, crispy fried chicken and white rice.
It was less than 5 minutes when EVERYTHING came out--how fast can these people cook food?! That totally freaked me out. I can't believe noodles and chicken, cripsy chicken to be exact could cook that quickly.
Everything looked re-heated and unfortunately tasted re-heated. The noodles were oily, the tofu was sour and tasted so weird it was inedible.
Even the rice tasted old. I was completed bummed and disappointed.
We all kind of pushed our food around on our plates in complete disbelieve and ate a few bites here and there.
When the waitress came by she asked if anything was wrong and I told her that the black bean tofu was weird tasting and a bit sour and that it just wasn't up to par. She didn't bat and eye and asked if we wanted to take anything home. I said only the crispy chicken, which I served to my dogs. My dogs farts were so nasty after their chicken dinner I had to make them sleep in another room! Ha!
Total bummer--I and my family included, will definitely not be frequenting this restaurant again. I almost wished we didn't go there so I could have had my pleasant rehearsal dinner memory as something to hold on to. -
Review from Kerrie C.
We dined here with friends for a family rehearsal dinner. They crammed our large group into a corner and squeezed us onto two tables. The food was good, the service was good, and we all had a really nice time. Not a restaurant I'd drive to Kaneohe for, but a good option for those who live in the area. It was a weeknight and it was fairly empty, but there were a lot of people popping in for takeout, so it must be good.

Love this place! The divey appearance does not do this food justice. I love that minute chicken noodle cake - it is chopped crispy noodle cake tossed with chicken in an amazing sauce. The crispy gau gee were delicious crispy wontons with meat inside. The chinese broccoli are slippery little devils that are delicious in your mouth. The staff is super friendly. The decor needs updating. The restaurant is easy to miss, because it is basically below the nearby boulebard. I wish that we had minute chicken noddle cake here - it is the best!

I don't know what the rest of you people are ordering at Kin Wah but I just put an order in for the Almond Duck and the Taro Duck. It's the best on the island. Nobody makes it like Kin Wah. Both dishes are shredded duck, then stuffed with the taro or almonds, then formed into a cake and fried. It is out of this world. The Almond Duck is my favorite. Crispy on the outside, juicy and tender in the middle then sprinkled with toasted almonds and dipped in sweet and sour sauce. OH MY WORD!
Going to a beach potluck and yes, I'll be the hit of the party. I may even try to pass it off as my own creation.Listed in: Local Style "Broke da Mouth…

THE BEST CHINESE FOOD!
When I think Chinese food, i think Kin Wah! I grew up in Kane'ohe, and it was only a 2 min drive down the street. The Sam See Mein, the Roast Duck, Sweet & Sour Shrimp, UnChoy and Seaweed soup are always a MUST at this place!!!
Nice decor, ambiance, is nice. The staff is friendly and if you're like my family, they know us. ha ha.
Don't forget to try the Chinese Pretzel's to DIE for!!! :) -

Service so fast you'll wonder if they:
A) Cooked the food thoroughly
B) Stole it from some else's table
C) Have ESP
We sat down, ordered, I walked outside to get my better half's jacket, sat back down, and SHAZZAM the food was there.
Not to complain too much, cause I was starving and thankful, but it was a little disconcerting.
Anyway I confirmed with a friend, who's a Kaneohe born and raised Kin Wah die hard, that that's how they roll here.
The instantly appearing cake noodle, eggplant, and honey walnut shrimp we had were okay. Nothing to rave about, nothing to really criticize...."if I'm being honest a somewhat safe forgettable performance."
Not a place I'd travel to for the ambiance (what ambiance?) or culinary expertise but it's PERFECT if you're in the neighborhood and want to clap your hands and have Chinese food just magically materialize. -

I'm pretty sure that Kin Wah is the only Chinese food my dad has eaten in the past twenty years. I don't even know what the menu offers because he always does the ordering, and he gets the same things every time.
So, while I can't speak for the rest of the menu, the Almond Duck, Cashew Chicken with Cake Noodles, Sweet Sour Cabbage, and Crispy Gau Gee have been consistenly delicious for as long as I can remember.Listed in: You Down With MSG? Yeah you…

It's worth the drive! My friends kept telling me to visit Kaneohe just to dine here and it took me a couple of years to get here. I was truly missing out!
I tried the Minute chicken cake noodle, taro duck, and 1/2 order peking duck w/ buns. It was all really good and big portions too. It's a must try if your in the neighborhood. -

I highly recommend getting the Stuffed Chicken Wings, Peking Duck, Kin Wah Chow Mein, and Sweet & Sour Fish Filet here. I usually order take out and avoid the fortune cookies. Parking can be a problem; be prepared to wait for a stall in the parking lot.
------------------------[ Beyond the Review ]------------------------
A group of coworkers and I went here for lunch. After eating, I bought one fortune cookie for each coworker. As I was handing them out, one of my coworkers said...
"I don't want one. My fortunes are always so negative."
"What are you talking about?" I said. "I never heard of anyone getting a bad fortune from a cookie. Here, take one."
He grudgingly agreed. He broke open the cookie, read his fortune, and said "See, I told you. It's bad!"
I thought he was joking as he handed me his fortune.
I read it out loud, "Good luck is coming your way..."
Puzzled, I asked, "What's wrong with that?"
"Keep reading," he insisted.
I read the entire fortune and was surprised at what it said:

Visited here yesterday and had:
Special Plate "B" (see photo section), which includes Kau Yuk, Spareribs, Beef Broccoli, Crisp Gau Gee, Fried Shrimp and Rice.
Rating: 4 stars
Note: For just $6.75, this plate is a great deal. Nothing "Pake" about that! Everything was delicious, and I LOVE their Crispy Gau Gee that's just STUFFED with tasty pork. Dip that buggah' in da' shoyu and coleman's mustard, and hooo' broke da' mout' winnahz! The Fried Shrimp is ono too. It's all good! Highly recommended choice, where you get a little of all the good stuff on one plate at a budget-busting price.
Tofu with Vegetables and Oyster Sauce (see photo section).

Notes: Kin Wah's Crispy Wun Tons rock!... err, I mean "Wok"!
This place has been here ever since I was a kid, and other than the owner having retired and the niece now taken over operations, nothing much seems to have changed. I have yet to (re)try more dishes on the menu to validate that though, so for now take that thought with a grain of salt. -

Cake noodles... you cannot find these in Michigan. They are a gift from the Gods.
I love this place. My mother-in-law brought me here the last time I was visiting and I intend to go back every trip. They have the best shrimp and black bean sauce I've ever had.
I have to say that Chinese food in Hawaii is totally different from what I've had on the mainland. I really enjoy it more. Compared to what I have gotten in the Mid-West it has more depth and texture.
The servers are always in a hurry, but not rude. My mom-in-law had no problem ordering a couple items that weren't on the menu, which is always cool.
Here is the breakdown:
* Wait staff: In a hurry and no nonsense, but you get what you order fast
* Drink Menu: I think it has beer...
* Menu: Chinese
* Parking: Tricky. The lot is usually full and you have to park on the street.
* Dress: Casual, of courseListed in: Best Food in Hawaii

My boss took me here for lunch one day & I was surprised! I drive past it a lot but never really had any interest in trying it... & Chinese food is not usually a fave. of mine.
However, it's so tasty! Very nice service too!
I ordered one of the lunch specials; Chicken with Black bean. If I remember correctly, it was only around $6.00 or so but a pretty large portion! & SO tasty!! (:

Kin Wah is usually pretty decent, fresh and tasty. However, on my last order, I decided to try the almond duck mentioned here in Yelp.
OMG, the duck used in the filling was totally freezer- burned. It was basically inedible. -

Been a big fan of Kin Wah since I was in high school, and it's standard fair whenever I go home. Cake noodles, chicken with black bean sauce, almond duck, sweet and sour chicken / pork, it's all good. Even if you don't live in Kaneohe, make the drive to the Windward side; I know several friends who travel from the Leeward / town side to dine here. Definitely worth it.

I would just to say from the get go...In terms of the old Pake's vs. Kin Wah debate...this place is WAY better than PAKEs or Joyful Garden for that matter. I admit I may be a bit biased because I basically grew up on their Mongolia Beef but they are kind of my measuring stick when it comes to middle class/take out Chinese food. I am not the only one that says this either. It seems like Kaneohe locals love this place more than anyone else. I also have friends that will drive all the way from Hawaii Kai to have their Chinese food. I think that says something about this place. A friend of mine once argued with me saying Pake was better so I said why? He said because of the desserts. Ummm...last time I checked, that wasn't a way to compare Chinese food or make it a deciding factor for that matter. Not saying all Pake's fans are like that but my friend wasn't the only one that said that. No enough evidence to win the debate.
I will go with my recent visit here in terms of their food. One of my friends never went here so I wanted him to try it. Ok..Anyone who knows me KNOWS I HATE salad. I always feel I can make it at home so I never order it. At Kin Wah I almost always order it. The Chinese Chicken Salad. They give a lot of chicken and veggies on a plate. Its covered with crispy wontons and sesame seeds. What makes the salad special is the dressing. Its creamy and its tangy like thousand island and tart like a vinegarette. I love it. My mom used to buy their dressings just for her salads she made at home. I would eat salad everyday if it was like theirs.
Mongolia Beef is my favorite here. NO ONE makes it like them. Others try to copy it but they can't quite make it like them. Every time my Mother or Father would ask me what I wanted at Kin Wah I would say "Mongolia Beef!" It hasn't changed much. Honestly, it melts in your mouth. Its really soft and tender. I love it on the sizzling platter. Tastes even better. A lot of chinese restaurants make their mongolia beef really tangy/sweet and spicy. Kin wah is mild and has a smooth savory flavor to it with a hint of sweetness. I remember I went to a chinese restaurant in town and they changed their Mongolia Beef to copy Kin Wah. Wasn't the same but I thought it gave more props to Kin Wah.
Only thing that was normal chinese food was the Fried rice and Minute Chicken with Cake Noodles. Being Chinese, I should know better not to order these things (like Beef Broccoli) but I did anyway. Not to say it wasn't good. It just wasn't anything special like what I wrote about previously. There are many other dishes here that are better like the stuffed tofu and the beef in black bean sauce. Maybe I'll write about them later.
Its reasonable here thats why I like it here. Wait staff is FAST! I swear I got my food in 5-7 mins. and they always refilled my water.
I know Kaneohe is far for many people but if you are looking for good chinese food at reasonable prices go to Kin Wah. -

Went there with the family for Mother's Day, gotta say that the cake noodle tasted and looked like it was 5 days old!! The honey walnut shrimp was the best dish out of all the food ordered, although that too looked like it wasn't fresh.
One star for the food, the 2nd star for the waitress who spilled water all over the egg fuyong and walked away laughing!!
I'd rather eat at Pake's instead, much better quality and definitely way better service in my opinion!!! -

I've been going here since I was a little kid, it was kind of nostalgic eating there a couple months ago for the first time in a long time. For all you Chinese-elitists out there, perhaps this isn't your idea of "authentic" Chinese food (I dare you to even find one thing authentic about HAWAII), but it's definitely GOOD food, and in my opinion, it's Chinese.
Try their taro duck - it's a piece of taro stuck on a piece of duck, deep fried and salted to perfection. For about $6.00 you can get a plate of them to feed three people. The service is always excellent, the ladies there frequently refill your water (you'd be surprised how many restaurants don't do this) and ask you how the food is. -

Everytime i come home to visit, this is one of the places i visit, I always get the follwing 2 things; Sam See Mein (Cake Noodle) and Chinese Chicken Salad. It's the best Chinese Chicken Salad ever, gotta have it every time. This time we also got Kau Yuk (Pot roast pork) super soft and tender. Never fails. Wish i could try more stuff but seems i can't get away from my favs.

I agree with Anita L. on this one. Lots of other better Chinese restaurants on the island, but I forgot to take the demographic of this place into consideration. It would be like going to Rome for sushi.
We had salt and pepper pork chops, cold ginger chicken, and mixed vegetables with cashews. The pork chops had to be the worst that I've ever had. The pieces were fatty and the breading was too thick. The cold ginger chicken was okay, but they charged an extra $2, if you wanted more of the ginger and green onion topping. The vegetables were okay.
The best advice I can pass on comes from my dad, "Eat Chinese where the Chinese eat." -

Awesome food and good size of food for pretty ok prices.
My grandparents liked the food a lot, especially my grandpa.. They used to go there a lot, lol & I mean a lot that they knew their order lol.. when my grandpa passed away last year (R.I.P.) we got the food for after the servce there.
Nice staff, good food, nothing can go wrong there.
Course we never (well,at least I didnt eat inside) we took out to eat it at home since my grandparents place is like down the road lol,so cant say much for inside eatery, but Im sure it is nice.
