Whats not to love?  Sushi, byob, and cool atmosphere.

I've been there 3 times and the service has been very attentive.  We got there tonight and we didn't have a reservation...we got there just in time because within minutes the place was packed.  The sushi is fresh.  I've had better but I still find it very good.  You have to try the summer roll.  Ohh my goodness.  It's good for groups too but call a few days ahead in order to get a table.

I really wanted to like this place. Too bad.

We went on a Saturday night around 8:30...they were busy, but we got a table right away. I set the wine that I brought on the table and sat for about 10 minutes before anyone came over to me. Maybe the waitress thought she would wait for a minute because I was still waiting for my boyfriend to park the car, and was alone. Who knows--either way I would have loved to be sippin on my wine while I waited!

For app I ordered the cucumber salad and crab rangoon. Both were just ok. I wouldn't order the crab rangoon again--the won ton was hard and the filling was like an overload of whipped cream cheese, no crab :(

After the apps we had to wait at least 30 minutes for our dinner--too long in my opinion, it's not like we ordered a lot. We ordered a few rolls, one of which was 13.00 and supposed to have soft shell crab. Well, it did I GUESS, but it was all claw AKA no meat and therefore, not worth it. Their summer roll was decent and this is always my favorite roll when I order sushi.

They give you 2 mini cupcakes when you're through--which are pretty disgusting.

The decor is nice--they did do a good job with that, it's just a shame that the food was not worth it.

I will keep going to Coast and Kamehachi--they don't let me down!!

I love sushi and my husband hates it. So the mix of Thai food and Sushi is the perfect offering for us. We went on Saturday around 8:30pm and had no problem getting a table, and since it's BYOB we bought a bottle of wine from the liquor store next door and enjoyed.

We started with the Crab Rangoon (good) and the Corn Fritters (wanted them to be good, but were just ok).

My husband got the Pineapple Fried Rice and it was very flavorful; I got the special "Sunny" Roll which was excellent and the Spicy Scallop Roll which was good, but I've had better.

We ended the meal with a piece of Mochi each, he had Chocolate and I had Red Bean. The Red Bean was TO DIE FOR. I would come back again just for that.

Best part, we got all of that (2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts) for around $45!

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience with good food, nice decor and quick service. They even had many veggie rolls to choose from so I'll be coming back again with my non-meat-eating sister.

I am generally wary of any asian restaurant that mixes ethnicities offering a little bit of everything. Usually a safe bet is something that is cooked, I tend to avoid sushi unless I'm at a Sushi Restaurant. The decor is modern, an interesting square sushi bar serves as the focal point. The service was polite and friendly.
So while none of my party got the sushi, the Thai food was quite good. Light, fresh, not greasy. I was surprised. To say it's authentic would be stretching it, but for relatively cheap, decent Thai food in the area, I would recommend Kin.

Looks good on the outside, looks good on the inside, but what comes out of that kitchen is shit. Tried a roll along with a thai dish, with the complamentry crab ragoon with a 15$ order or more.  The crab ragoon tasted like it was from Jewel. The maki roll was very skinny suprising because it was one of the specialty maki rolls, rice was dry, the cream cheese made me sick to my stomach. Also tried to thai dish see u, very little taste, the pork was all fatty, the dish just wasn't good. 25$ total defiantly wasn't worth it.

I've only ordered take-out here so I'm not sure what the full on Kin experience is like. As far as take-out, it's been good. Really yummy crab rangoon and chicken teriyaki. It's always ready really fast too. I'm not ready to stop ordering from my other favorite thai places just yet but I am thrilled to have a cute place like Kin right down the street where I know I can get good food fast.

Great food, and good atmosphere.  The staff is very kind and accommodating.  When I go to other sushi places now I measure the quality with what I get at KIN.

BYOB is awesome and free.
The quality of the Sushi is excellent.
Staff is very attentive.

I just can't say enough about this place.  Try it if at least once to compare to your normal sushi place.

My sushi place will kick your sushi place's ass any day of the week.

Part I

I went here for dinner with my boyfriend. For an appetizer we got creative and ordered a snow crab roll. Very very tasty. I had the Lard noodles with beef and my boyfriend ordered some other noodle dish. Both were great, even though my lard noodles were crazy salty.  We kept it chill and didn't BYO, but this is my staple Thai place. The server, Rama I think, was perfect and so cute. Atmosphere is great for a date or a fun dinner with friends, and won't break the bank. Definitely a great cheap eat.

Part II

I have a cold, and haven't eaten anything since my bagel at breakfast because I've had no appitite. I'm walking to my house, and pass Kin. What time is it? Dark. I'm tired, that's all I know. I stop in Kin, because all of a sudden miso soup sounds so so good. Turns out they're closing, and kitchen is closed. But, Kin, oh so typical of a ma and pop BYOB, asks me what I wanted, and proceed to whip out all they need to make me a miso soup! I happily waited and went home happy.

Fin

Two feel good stories about the new Thai place a couple of doors down from me.

This may  be my new go-to BYOB sushi place!

After my old go-to (Butterfly) basically let me down one too many times, i decided to try Kin. Good choice.

Ive been here twice, once on a saturday night (the place was about 2/3 full at around 9) and on a sunday night (we were 1 of 4 tables) and both times the service and food has been very good.

Ive only had sushi here:
- the Sexy Summer roll (a special- soooo good)
- Tang-Kwa roll (no rice, wrapped in cucumber, really interesting)
- Snow crab roll (delicious)
- my fav the New Tokyo roll which has huge pieces of seared salmon on top- its so delicious and filling.

They also put mango on a lot of rolls which i LOVE. Ive never tried the other options (noodles, curry, entrees) but with such delicious sushi who cares.

Another plus- the bill has never been more than $40 for 2 people. I can totally afford to go have a fun dinner with a friend for that price and still go out to the bar after!

Jimmy! Jimmy! He's our man! If he can't get you to appreciate sea urchin testicles, no one can!

Kin is a new entry into the burgeoning Thai and Japanese combo restaurant market. Some of these combo-style restaurants focus more on the Thai cuisine and offer sushi as more of an ancillary item to the meal. At Kin, I get the impression it's quite the opposite. Here their sushi selections seem to dominate the menu with a breadth of nigiri, maki, sashimi, and combo plates to choose from. The maki offerings run deep; with over 40 different rolls to choose from.

When dining on sushi, often times I prefer to sit at the sushi bar over a table. Sushi chefs can be entertaining and are a great source of information about the sushi universe. Our chef, Jimmy, rocked!  We showed up about 30 minutes prior to close, so I was a bit concerned about being rushed. Jimmy told us to take all the time we needed. That put us at ease, allowing us to work the menu a little more thoroughly.

For appetizers, we started with the Hamachi Ponzu and the Japanese take on Tuna Tartare. The fish was fresh. Both were good. Nothing entirely too special, but good. The tartare seemed under seasoned. We next picked out 4 rolls and a few nigiri pieces. This is when things went from good to excellent!

While waiting on our maki rolls, I asked Jimmy his thoughts on Uni, aka sea urchin testicles/ovaries. Most hardcore sushi enthusiasts love Uni. Jimmy was no different. His face lit up when he described how tasty uni can be. I have tried it on 3 previous occasions and have found my mouth and sea urchin testicles do not get along. Instead of debating with me, Jimmy took the bulls by the horn and whipped up a quick piece of fresh Uni on cucumber. He explained how Uni's flavor will change day by day and it is best on day one. Jimmy handed me the Uni piece (on the house) and away I went. He was right. That was by far the best piece of Uni I have ever had. The musky flavor I had experienced with previous Uni was not so apparent in this piece. Instead, it was cool, creamy, and not so bad tasting. Thanks Jimmy for helping me understand why so many people like putting balls in their mouths.

The maki rolls at Kin for the most part have traditional names, but are differentiated from other sushi places by a spice/ingredient or unique presentation. For our maki selections, we had the Crispy Kin, Tora, Summer, and Soft Shell Crab. The Crispy Kin is one of the house specialties and was delicious. You can find the Summer roll in many places, but Kin's version is probably the best Summer roll I have ever had. I think the jalepeno and cilantro added to the roll gives it a nice thai style kick; something that us spice lovers absolutely crave. The Tora and Soft Shell Crab rolls were good as well. I would order them all again.

For Nigiri, we had a couple standards of salmon and yellowtail. But they also had Shiro Maguro, otherwise known as white tuna, in the house! So we had to try it. White tuna is a very soft and fatty fish that generally does not even come from tuna. Instead, it is from the escolar fish. (Some restaurants will use albacore tuna, but it's not as delicious as the escolar.) The white tuna was near perfect. It has a lot of the similarities of toro, but it's white and does not melt in your mouth quite as fast.

Overall, my first experience at Kin was great. The food was excellent. And the service was great. I recommend paying Kin a visit. It is BYOB, so be sure to bring some booze if you like hittin' the bottle. (There is a liquor store conveniently located about 1/2 a block north on Milwaukee.)

There's a new BYOB sushi & thai spot on Milwaukee Ave and I am a fan!

It's a sleek design - with chrome tables and dark walls. The sushi bar is in the middle of the restaurant, providing fun viewing for those that want to be close to the action.

The service was very attentive and the food was fab! Ordered the Dynamite Roll (so spicy and wonderful) the Summer Roll and the Sumo specialty roll. The rolls are quite large and filling. My only food complaint was they were a bit liberal on the mayo...

I'll definitely be back to this new, wonderful addition to the neighborhood. And you cannot beat BYOB!

In a world of about a zillion sushi and thai places -- this place falls smack dab in the middle.  Not fantastic, but not bad either.

Spring rolls were solid -- pad thai was average.  Service was ok.  On the plus side, it's a BYOB which makes me happy.   I would go back but I'm not in a hurry to do so.

I went here with four other people tonight.
its right around the corner from my house which is a plus.
i had no idea it was byob....
i did know there was a convenience store next door.
luckily they had cold wine and beer at the convenience store.
it seemed that kin had two servers on. small place no biggie.
it took a little time for someone to come to our table.
out of spring rolls which was fine. we got corn fritters and edamame.
both were good.
2 of the 4 sushi servings came out about 5 minutes before the others.
sushi all together was good. better than some other places ive been too.

the atmosphere is the place is nice.
i was relaxed and had a really good time.
i would go back.
also no corkage fee and the 5 of us paid about 20 bucks per person for 3 rolls each and some apps.

good deal.

Been here on 3 separate occassions with different groups...once with just the boyfriend, again with 10 gals and a third time on a double date.  Great for all 3 groups (although made a reso with the big group of girls, as the place is pretty small).

I don't eat Thai, so can only speak for the sushi.  As for as byob sushi spots in Chi go (as there are millions), quality, quantity and and price all matched up pretty well.  The first time, I remembered the maki rolls being smaller, which was OK because the price was pretty reasonable.  But the sizes seemed more on par with typical Chicago sushi spots the second time around.  Seaweed salad was delish.

flawless, friendly service, cute ambiance with great music. Not loud (like Butterfly, where ya gotta shout). Solid sushi!!! Shocker. Every roll was tasty, perfectly rolled, & cheap! Crispy Kin, Red Sky, Sunny, Sexy Summer Crunchy Shrimp, Spicy Taco, & several nigiri (tako, toro, escolar, king crab).  I don't know what was better, the consistency of delicious maki or the sweet service. And BYOB & quality sexy lounge/house music make this place a staple.

Came back a week & a half later on Saturday nite. Rolls were filled full of rice. NOT cool. Cheapened down, sloppy. Waitresses stood around talking, not delivering or checking in.

Still worth a revisit to test consistency.

I've been to a lot of different sushi & thai places.  Fewer sushi/thai places.  Kin does both of these excellently.  I've been here a couple times now, and everything I've had or tried so far has been among the best, if not the best I've ever had.  Their 'crispy kin' roll is excellent, can't remember what's in it though.  I have to say their Pad Thai was probably the best I've ever had, and that's saying a lot!  Everything was nicely presented and attractive.  Prices are actually very reasonable, in my estimation.

Their service was excellent as well, however the 2nd time I went we did have to wait a bit longer since they were so busy and the wait staff seemed a little stretched.  I'd definitely recommend making reservations if possible (not sure if they accept them, haven't made them yet), seems like word is getting out that this BYOB sushi place is not just another sushi place.

Definitely going back!!

I've experience better! Yes its BYOB and they do have a good selection of food but the food itself...not the best. The sushi was below average but the thai food wasn't half bad. The decor was great...I really liked it but sadly I was more excited about how the place looked then by the service. It was awful. It was slow. We waited for 20 minutes before we had to tell our waitress to take our order. Thats not good! Our order was completely disorganized. We had four people in our group and we all received our dishes at different times and the worst part is that two people in my party ordered the same thing!!! The sushi wasn't up to par. This place needs better sushi, a better wait staff, and more organization. I won't be heading back here anytime soon. The staff was friendly but really slow. I'd avoid this place until it gets its act together.

ok just went there.. 3 people ate, we were ab;e to byob which is insanely awesome. Our sever Gimmi was so polite and nice, she welcomed use with a great reccomendation, and at the end brought out cupcakes for desert. We had a 3 year old with us and when they saw him looking at our whitiness at its best with the chop sticks, gimmi brought out a chop sticks handle that allowed him to partake in the amature act. We had a great timje and at the end what did it cost $27.00.. yes thats right 27 freakin well spent dollars. It is nice to see a a place that makes walk out think you got every pennies worth and more. And heres a plus++++ its nice enough to bring a date.. or a friend and make it YOUR TREAT because the return is worth way more then the origional investment!

I came home Friday after one of the most boring, horenchel (yes, I made this word up) days and my husband delighted me with a surprise of "let's go out for Sushi"!!!! Not only are we going out for Sushi but it's a BYOB! Oh heaven's delight! OK, arrived to find plenty of street parking and no meters?!?! Yeah, this night couldn't get better. Kin was rather busy so we got to sit at the sushi bar. The restaurant is not that big and there isn't too much to say about it. The walls are all black and there is no fancy decor about it. Anyways, this was my first time ever sitting at a sushi bar. How cool to watch these masters whip up all these amazing dishes right there, it is almost mesmerizing to watch their perfection. Of course, inquisitive me had to ask what everything was as they were making them and they answered and explained everything without annoyance! We started off with the Tuna Tar tare which was Delicious. Tuna, mango, avocado, red onions all served in a half avocado shell. We enjoyed Philadelphia rolls, which were probably the biggest I have ever had, plenty of salmon stuffed in there. We also had the snow crab which was my personal favorite of the night and the spicy scallops. I am not one for major spicy but this was just right. Apparently next time I go I have to order the Sexy Summer. A gentleman sitting next to me said he has it several times a week that is how good it is! Can't wait to go back...

Went to Kin last night, and have vowed not to return.  The service was the worst I have experienced in a looong time!  We waited for 10 minutes before speaking to a waitress, another 20 minutes to get our appetizer order of edemame.  The restaurant was pretty empty, so I don't understand what the hold up was.  And to top it off--the waitress wasn't even apologetic.  Go elsewhere for your sushi fix!

Went here last night and it was delicious! I've been looking for a great place close by and this one was fantastic! Started with the miso soup, which came right away, sampled three maki rolls which were all fantastic (not one that I didn't like), and ended with some mochi green tea ice cream. It was quiet, quaint and the decor was completely appropriate and comfortable. I highly recommend you try their sushi! Haven't tried the thai yet, but maybe next trip...

Ordered the Sushi Deluxe.  Sushi was pretty good, but not outstanding.  Same goes for the service.  My boyfriend was unimpressed with the curry he ordered.  But, the look and feel of the place is pleasant.  There is a large window that opens onto the sidewalk.  While this restaurant didn't astound me, I'd go back.

Cute little spot! Great for big parties with lots of wine. Dimly lit interior with votive candle everywhere creates intimate and cozy vibe. Food is good..but not out of this world. Prices are very reasonable probably because portions are medium-sized.  Overall, not sure if it's worth the trip for just average food (long walk + bus ride + long walk = hungry monica)
