I'd give six stars if Yelp would let me.
Simply put, the best ice cream I have ever had, anywhere. Hands down. Nobody else can even compete.
Get the small. Trust me...it'll be enough. I promise. -
Review from Jason H.

Kimball is tops among the local farm-based creameries in the Boston metro area.
I believe you must try some sort of vanilla-based flavor as part of the determination of ice cream establishment quality. My baseline is always cookie dough - Kimball's is top notch, with supremely creamy , rich vanilla and prevalent dough chunks. A friend had coffee heath bar, another of my favorites - easily in the top three I've ever had.
When deciding on a size, consider going for a small. "Small?" you say. "But I'm an adult, surely I can get a larger size." Small...will be enough. Small here is akin to a JP Licks medium/large, and a large here is more than a pint. Children, this establishment will add heft.
If you are dead-set on getting two different flavors, however, you must get a large - perhaps the only downside to Kimball. You could view this as a benefit, though - free excuse to come back numerous times to try more! -

The port-a-potty here is disgusting.
Good thing the ice cream is amazing! -

Ice cream at all Kimball Farms locations is really tasty and very reasonably priced. Portions are GIANT, and they abide by that bizarre New England tradition of refusing to put 2 flavors in a "small" even though a small actually contains about 4 scoops of ice cream. I usually get Kahlua Crunch and Chocolate Peanut Butter. If you like good, homemade ice cream, then you need to visit Kimball Farms.

Review from Marcy K.
One of the best ice cream places in these parts is Kimball Farm, and we've gone to the main location--Westford, MA--(now with a grill/seafood area, mini golf, a country store, batting cage, bumper boats, pitch and putt, arcade, and ice cream) and to the location in Carlisle, which has - wait for it - ice cream and not much else except a beautiful setting, a relaxed atmosphere, and a few picnic tables. Never a problem parking, and it's very low-key.
Kimball (Carlisle) has fewer offerings than its Westford, MA, namesake, but the ice cream is still delicious (and pricey) and the lines aren't nearly as long.
Had some errands in the next town, so figured I'd get some goodies to take home. Places that serve ice cream generally attract friendly, pleasant personnel, but this was not the case; my server needed an attitude adjustment, and I was going to call her on it but changed my mind. She should be selling witches' hats and brooms, not frozen delights.
Minus 1 star for service, and plus 8 for product, so I'll say 4 stars and call it a day.Listed in: Non-Candy Goodies

El Paso, TX
Best ice cream ever! We ordered it from the Kimball Farms Westford location.
We did a bulk order from them for the wedding and it was very easy. Just call, as to speak to Jill, let her know if you want the 3 gallon ($45) or a pint ($8.75) and then pick it up. The pick up window, if you're facing the stand, is all the way to the left and back. There is no sign for it, it is just a mesh door that leads into the ice cream stand. If you hang around long enough, they'll notice you and ask if you have to pick anything up. They really should just put up a sign since I was wicked confused when I went there.
They do not offer delivery unfortunately, but if your venue is close enough, you should definitely get this high quality ice cream - it was a big hit at our wedding. -

Burlington, MA
Simply the best ice cream without the crazy Kimball's crowds. My favorite flavor is German Chocolate, but the last few times they've been out of it. :( Tried the Malted Moo tonight. It's a blend of chocolate and vanilla with chocolate covered malted pieces. It was pretty good. I sampled my daughter's Mint Cookie and kinda wished I got that. Lots and lots of cookie in it. Very minty too. For sure, as the other reviews state, the kiddie is way more than expected. It's about the size of every place elses medium to large.
If going there at night, definitely use some bug spray! They do have some live chickens and goats kicking around. A bit smelly, but it's a real farm feel. -

Oh my, I'm glad that I had someone warn me to order the kiddie size. Portion sizes are generous. This is some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Love the coffee oreo. Just tried the pumpkin, tasted like pumpkin pie. Staff is happy to dole out samples. Cash only.

Home sweet home. Love you, Kimball's, and your generous-sized portions that have spoiled me all these years. Your quality has always been consistent, which makes you all the more better. However I do miss the days when we could feed the waffle cone nubs to the goat.

Love it! This ice cream stand is exactly 25 miles from my house when I bike. Perfect halfway mark!
A large for under $5 is ridiculously large. I mean, I don't think any normal person can (or should!) finish one. I've tried maple walnut, Maine black bear, rum raisin, etc.
Plethora of options. There's an old rooster running around. Fun! I didn't see a corn maze; I think it's just a ice cream stand. -

This location is only an ice cream stand! I was pretty surprised when I came here..Thank god I was just grabbing ice cream w/ a friend! I thought all Kimball farms had an arcade, bumper boats, etc. . . apparently I thought wrong. The workers here are extremely nice, compared to the Westford location! The prices are very moderate and the ice cream is amazing! They give large proportions and I wouldn't be surprised if they used one whole bottle of whip cream on one ice cream sundae! Def. recommend this place!

Ice Cream = Cash Only
Food and Beverages = Cash or Credit
...and there is an ATM in the Country Store. One of those little jank ones you see in convenience stores that charges you a 2.50 ATM fee.
So I've not really had anything but ice cream at Kimball's before...but after reading my friend, Marcy K's review:
http://www.yelp.com/us...
...I decided to grab some friends and head over.
So yeah, not having been at this place in a while, quite a bit has changed. The seafood shack and grill is quite the addition. Ranging from all your typical deep fried seafood plates...and a monster lobster roll. You can also grab burgers, dogs, chicken sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc, etc.
My 2 friends and I all gorged on the Clam Plate...a HUGE pile of whole belly clams, deep fried of course....sitting on top of a delicious pile of hand-cut, skin-on french fries. There is cole slaw somewhere beneath it all too. They have all the condiments you'd hope for...tarter sauce, which curiously they don't offer by default, you have to ask for it...anywho...ketchup, mustard, relish, salt, pepper and malt vinegar. Nice...malt vinegar on fries, sweet!
Not to mention, you can get urself a beer while you're there. I only saw a few popular domestics there, Bud, Corona, etc.
It was all good...really...
Seafood is a tad on the expensive side, but the huge portions offset the financial hit.
None of us could down the whole thing, which is ok, cuz we knew we'd be getting some ice cream after.
Anyone that knows Kimball's, knows they have killer ice cream.
It's funny to watch the people leave the ice cream counter...having paid for their ice cream...commenting on the SIZE of the ice cream, cone or sundae that they're holding in their hands.
In fact, there is a $6.30 sundae called the Kimball Special. It's so big, it's jagunda.
Yeah...jagunda:
http://www.urbandictio...
...a woman and her daughter were laughing about it as they carried it...making the infamous claim: "There is no way we're eating this whole thing."
Yeah, right. ; )
Anyway...get ur a$$ down there...
Thanks Marcy!Listed in: Ice Cream, Cakes and Cupcakes

Are you depressed? Bad day at work? Just broke up?
Drown your sorrows with the most delicious 10 000 calories you've ever had at Kimballs!
I came here on a warm July evening, the small farmstand-like Kimball's icecream shining in the dark Carlisle streets like the promised land. Abuzz with soon-to-be-very-happy ice cream lovers, Kimballs has so many flavors of icecream, frozen yogurt and sorbet that the front of the stand is literally covered in the menu, with many additional flavors tacked on haphazardly. Take thy time when making a decision, as all the orders are movie-size (hence the prices. Don't forget cash). Friendly staff, generous portions, great atmosphere. No gym nearby to raise feelings of guilt.Listed in: Restaurants

Outstanding ice cream. Quaint little area to sit down and enjoy your ice cream. The cookie was amazing. It was so thick and delicious. They are a cash only establishment, so come prepared. The small size cup for $3.95 was huge and could two people. Great price, great ice cream, no reason not to go here.

Review from Chris C.
So growing up in Westford I have been having Kimballs ice cream basically my whole life. I love ice cream, trust me, but I still do not understand why people love Kimballs.
The flavors are very basic and while they are very good quality I don't think they are mind blowing. I can think of quite a few other stands that serve much better ice cream and for lower prices. I will say that they have perfected the frappe here. They definitely make the best chocolate frappe around.
The atmosphere at this location is very nice with animals, fields and picnic table and not the bordering on Las Vegas feeling that the original one in Westford has reached at this point. So in my opinion save your money and try somewhere new if your a Kimballs regular and if your coming from Boston skip Kimballs and try somewhere else. -

Kimball's is definitely an institution in the area. The ice cream is amazing, the prices are fair, and now a'days they offer just about any other treat or diversion you could hope for. Some of their other activities are a bit over priced in my opinion, but the quality is never lacking. Kimball Farm is probably the next best thing to an amusement park right in the Westford area. I would go so far to say it is the closest I have seen anything become without actually being called an amusement park right out. Everything they do, they do well.

These days, unfortunately, it seems like more and more trendy type ice cream shops are popping up, where for a bargain $4.95 you get a half a scoop of ice cream served with a miniature spoon that would fit a cabbage patch doll better than a human hand. Ice cream shouldn't be served in small quantities like it is pure gold with a spoon slightly bigger than a toothpick.
Kimball's does ice cream right. Kimball's says "No" to trendiness and "Yes" to Super Size Me. You ask for a sample taste of an ice cream, and you get a legit sample. You ask for a kiddie size, and you get a huge portion. If you ask for a large, you are just foolish. Kimball's offers some of the best ice cream around. Delicious creamy ice cream with amazing mixes of ingredients. It's worth the visit at either of Kimball's two locations. -

I scream, you scream, we all scream for......you know the rest.
Being a new resident to this fine corner of the world, I was surprised to be told that New Englanders are the highest, per capita, consumers of ice cream. Who knew? After going to Kimballs, I can see why.
As a transplanted Californian, we used to think we were God's gift to everything culinary. Well, forget it, Kimball's is God's gift to frozen dairy....YUMM!
As stated by so many of the reviews, the portions are huge! I asked for a small and was very surprised by the size of my cone. I had chocolate malt (I think that's what it was). It was creamy, delectable and not too sweet. The servers behind the counter were also nice folks and efficient!
I look forward to other artery clogging trips this summer to try more of what Kimballs has to offer.Listed in: Good Eats (sorry Alton) in…

Kimball's is my new favorite place for ice cream. The ice cream is delicious, the portions are huge, and the staff is friendly.
Kimball's has a huge variety of flavors. They're even stocked on different flavors of frozen yogurt, which is a rarity. My husband and I split a large, which was the biggest portion of ice cream I'd ever seen. It was mammoth and I enjoyed every bite.
Prices are extremely reasonable. There are some farm animals to check out while you're enjoying your ice cream, and plenty of picnic tables if you want to have a seat.
If I lived closer, I would be in big trouble. -

I LOVE KIMBALL'S!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a not too far away from where I work so every few weeks in the summer, my colleagues and I will hit up Kimball's for an ice cream lunch. I'm talking full-on lunch of ice cream.
Order a small and I swear, it will be the size of your head. And the gazillion flavors!! Oh they are to die for. They make all of their ice cream at their main location in Westford--which deserves another review entirely because of the full-blown entertainment aspect of that place! In fact, the picture above is for their Westford location, which is a huge complex. This location is just a little ice cream shack off the side of the road. There are a few goats and sheep for the little ones to gawk at. -

I passed this place today on my way to repair a computer...
"Ice cream," I thought. "Hell yes."
I got a "small" waffle cone of grapenut ice cream.
The choices were Baby, Small, or Regular... I only discovered afterwards that "baby" means "an amount of ice cream the size and weight of a newborn baby" while "small" means "enough ice cream to fill a small car."
Strangely, "regular" indicates "a normal amount of ice cream."
Seriously though, "small" was at least a pint of ice cream... I can't imagine what a regular must look like.
The ice cream itself was delicious. It had tons of grapenuts in it and was super creamy. (If you've never had grapenut ice cream, by the way, definitely try it out.)
I enjoyed watching the goats, geese, and chickens roaming around a pasture of wild flowers as I gorged myself on the ice cream. Definitely worth a visit. -

Like the reviews say, their ice cream is amazing. It's all homemade and new batches arrive daily in the summertime -- that's how fresh it is (I used to work here during summers in high school, so I can attest to it!)
I love their chocolate-based ice creams. It is so creamy and is the bar by which I measure all other chocolate ice creams. Get the kiddie size when ordering -- it's about 1.5 scoops and is all you need! -

Oh Little Kimball's as we so commonly refer to you as - since the Big Kimball's has gotten to big, we've graced you with our presence. Delicious, friendly, creamy and sugary are you frozen delights. Large Amounts for Small amounts of money is the way it should be.
Oh and thank you for Kahlua Fudge - FINALLY FINALLY! -

Absolutely the best Ice Cream within 50 miles! We have tried many flavors. Great for the kids. Portions are huge, prices are reasonable. Cash only at the Ice Cream stand. You can definitely share. But beware the long lines. Also the parking lots get very packed quickly so better to drop everyone off to get a spot in line while you park the car. Love the cones, cups... but I tried some sort of chocolatey concoction ice cream shake recently and it was too die for. This is a must stop and quick pull-off If you are driving on I-495.
They also have a driving range, mini golf, bumper boats, etc. My brother and I tried the driving range recently it was ok, but the prices were a bit higher than what we are used to at our fav spot in Lexington, MA. -

A must visit! The ice cream is wonderful and there are lots of flavors to choose from (so you won't get bored if you go every day!). Be warned - the servings are quite large! A small at Kimball's is about the size of a large or extra large anywhere else - there's a pang of guilt that goes through you when you see the cup or gone being pushed your way.
There are some benches and picnic tables so you can enjoy your ice cream in the farm setting and forget all about the city life that's only a few miles away.
Another plus - its on a great biking road making it a wonderful place to stop and refill the water bottle while getting some well earned calories into your system. -

Worth the drive, although I always thought it was in Littleton, not Carlisle...
Amazing ice cream, huge lines but a great place to go for a few hours. They have all sorts of things to do there and a gift shop, etc. Driving range, water boat thingies, volleyball courts in the back. -
Review from Vivz C.
Framingham, MA
Only the best place for ice cream! My father had heard about it when we first moved to MA. He was working in Lexington and took a trip there with a co-worker. Before long, our whole family was driving from Wayland to Carlisle at least twice a month during the summers to get our favorite ice cream. Kimball Farm is one of the reasons I miss "home" so much. Haven't found anything like them here in Jersey and it's been at least 5 years since I've had the pleasure of enjoying their ice cream.
Proportions are JINORMOUS. A small is about the size of a large from Friendly's. We would actually bring tupperware containers with us and order larges so that any leftover (nearly impossible to eat it all in one sitting, IMO) could be carefully stored away in our cooler until we got home. For the prices, how could you not take them up on a large?! They are so affordable and they provide such great customer service.
They are also the only place that I know that carries Peppermint Stick Ice Cream even when it's not the holiday season! That was one of my main reasons for loving them so much. (All their flavors are awesome, but everyone's gotta have a fave!) They didn't skimp on the Peppermint Stick - they would be these nice big pieces that after you crunch a few between your teeth, they would get stuck. But oh, the pepperminty goodness! Also try the Pineapple orange with real pineapple and orange pieces. Not the biggest pieces, but that was my Mom's favorite flavor.
During the summer evenings, make sure you apply a little bit of insect repellent as the lines are usually pretty long. Especially on the extra warm nights. You could be in line for a good 15 minutes before making it up to the window. But the wait is so worth it. And you can take a nice walk around the farm once you have ice cream in hand.
My only piece of advice....only get a cone if you're a quick ice cream eater. Otherwise, with their portions, you'll find yourself wearing more ice cream soup than actually finding any of that yummy goodness in your mouth. =P -

San Francisco, CA
Carlisle is a beautiful rural suburb where the minimum lot size is 2 acres. 4-225 is a nice winding road through the forest which arrives at Kimball Farms, where in the middle of nowhere you can often see 100 cars in the parking lot and 3 lines 10 people long. Why are they here?
The ice cream is wonderfully fresh. It may lack the execution of Cones or Christina's so try a simple flavor, letting the freshness shine through.
The portions are enormous. Two people will eat themselves sick trying to split a large between them. Three people will still overeat.
It is cheap. Really cheap. The Godzilla portion here costs less than one scoop in the city.
Drive there in a convertible on a summer day. With a pretty girl riding shotgun, her hair blowing in the wind.
Overall, the most enjoyable ice cream experience available to mankind. -

Kimball's no better ice cream ANYWHERE
Marcy- I am not sure where you are coming up with "pricey"for the ice cream? Kiddie size at Carlisle is gigantic and cheap $3.25 I think. Where else do you by ice cream? if you go to Cabot's or Brigham's (what's left)or Lizzy's, the portion size is pathetic and it's expensive and nowhere as good as Kimball's.
If you love nuts- oh the butter pecan! loaded with fresh crunchy pecans. Oh the coffee heath bar
If you have never been to there- please go.
Please keep driving past Bedford Farms- I went there when Kimball's was closed in March and I actually threw the ice cream in the trash! -

((( The Best Ice Cream I ever had in life ...... nothing compared to Kimball ))))
If you love ice cream, drive 25 min to Carlise (next to Lexington and Concord). This is the best ice cream on earth. I am not kidding.
HUGE portion for small back you pay. Sm, Med, Large are options. Don't get large if you can not finish a pint, cost only 3.80 buck. I love Rum Raisin, Frozen Pudding, Maple Walnut, and other flavors. They give generous portion and their ice creams are loaded with chuncky ingrediences. Bring children here if you have one, there are farm animals. It is in a farm setting. Drive to Concord Center, then take right turn at The Colonial Inn onto Monument Sq. You will drive by North Bridge and a nice scenic route.with lots of farm and horse farm.
EDIT: New found favorite ice cream : Almond Joy = Toasted Coconut, Alomond Crunch, Chocolate Chip and Moose Track. I went there yesterday along with a friend and had that giant size ice cream as my first meal of the day...... (07/17/07) -

Mocha almond assault is my favorite. All the flavors are scrumptious. The only bad thing is that they are seasonal and if you need a fix in the winter, you have to find someplace else or resort to going to the store to pick up some average ice cream.
My all time favorite ice cream place is Peaceful Meadows in Whitman/Plymouth/Middleboro, but I live too far from it now. -

Holy 5 stars batman.
I know Kimball's is good, but wow that's a lot of positive reviews. While I do love me some pitch and putt followed by Kimball's ice cream on a sunny summer day I'm not sure I can go all the way to 5 stars. The reason; there is better ice cream to be had in the world. In fact there is even better ice cream in the state *cough* Herrell's in NoHo *cough*.
As many people have stated this place is great, they have much to do (mini-golf, pitch and putt, driving range, bumper boats, Im sure Im missing something else). Along with that the ice cream might be a bit pricey, but honestly I thought about taking away a star cause the servings are so big (I am trying to watch my girlish figure). Lastly there is plenty of space to go enjoy your ice cream and relax.
4 stars for good ice cream, hearty servings, and plenty of other entertainment. However, in the end dock a star because ice cream is the main attraction and you can find better elsewhere (though not much better). -

Awesome ice cream stand with HUUUGE portions. My dad used to have a white Caprice station wagon that looked like a boat. We have this picture of my little bro sitting on the hood, his face and the car COVERED in chocolate ice cream. CLASSIC!
We loved looking at the animals as kids, and hey, animals are still cool!
The ice cream may be the best I ever had and there are tons of delicious flavors to choose from. I once got this uber sinful chocolate peanut butter with huge swirls of real PB. Yum! Cheap, plentiful, tasty, you can't go wrong. -

One of the easiest ratings I ever had to do.
Fabulous ice cream and I am picky about my ice cream. Just the right sweetness and creaminess - none of that cloying aftertaste in your mouth that you get with most ice creams.
Portions are enormous - get two people and split a large. It's more then enough ice cream and you will only spend $1.80 per person (spend the money you save on a tip!) The only thing you will fight about is who got more of who's flavor in their share of the ice cream (of course you want to be the person who got more of the other person's flavor...)
Ice cream flavors are creative enough. You can certainly find more exotic flavorings at places like Christina's and Toscaninis but for fresh tasting homemade ice cream with your traditional ice cream additions (eg heath bar, cookies, crunchy bits, chocolate, coconut, etc), Kimballs if my favorite. And then, there is the Berry Spangled Spectacular - this is my favorite flavor. Kimballs only makes it for one week for the Fourth of July. And they only make it for one week, apparently, because the scoopers can't stand the smell of it after that. But that one week, I go every day and get this flavor - it is, well, spectacular! It is lightly cheesecake flavored with strawberry and blueberry chunks throughout. I'm counting down already...
Oh yeah - the atmosphere is utterly charming. A sheep, a few geese, a goat... and a lovely patio and a garden. -
Review from Kerri O.
I'd have to agree with the stellar ratings this joint gets. Great ice cream; mind boggling servings. Honestly, a kiddie cup is a large from most any other ice cream place.
I kind of like seeing the stunned expression on the face of someone who has ordered a large. They obviously haven't been to Kimballs before.
I'd love to see better bathrooms, at least to wash the sticky residue from the ice cream off. That's my only quibble, and its minor.
There's other Kimballs in Westford, and Pepperell. The Westford location jams up like the Portsmouth tolls in summer, though. -
Review from Vivian C.
There are three Kimball Farms - the Carlisle one doesn't have all those extras such as Mini Golf and Bumper Boats. It has loads of ice cream, quite a few tables with some shade to the left of the stand, several benches along the field, a couple of caged chickens, and I spotted a goat behind the fence as well and a portapotty to the far right of the stand. They also have a water fountain conveniently located at the left edge of the stand, and will give you a cup if you ask nicely for it.
Okay, the ice cream. It is HUGE. A small for $3.60 is just plain big. Check out the photo I posted. I have to see if they'll serve it in a coffee cup for me next time, because it was a race between me and the hot sun, and the sun won, leaving me quite sticky. They also have a kiddie size for $3.25 which wasn't on the menu posted and is still a lot of ice cream.
They have a reasonably sized parking lot, and I spotted an employee washing down the red-checked wrapped picnic tables during some down time in the afternoon. Upgrade the portapotty and I'd be willing to reconsider the 5th star... -

Oh, Kimball Farm Ice Cream, how do I love thee? About once a year, my family heads back east to see relatives, etc. It's funny how we spend almost equal time doing family activities as we do at Kimball Farm (at Bate's Farm). I'm a sucker for their peppermint icecream and their pistacio, but I have yet to find a flavor that isn't AWESOME. Order a 'kiddie size' because it's big enough, trust me. And enjoy just sitting outside watching the farm critters. Its a real gem.
We're still working on a way to transport it back to Cali.
