These guys are great!
My husband and I bought a new home and wanted to reface the kitchen cabinets. I found Kim Sand Installations online. It's risky picking a contractor without having a personal recommendation, but something on their website intrigued me -- the fact that Jeff (Kim's son, who now runs the business) builds violins.
First of all, when you call, Jeff answers the phone. No answering service, no assistant. He came over the next day to measure the space and emailed me an estimate just a few hours later. To my surprise, his quote was 20% cheaper than other estimates I had obtained. When I took this quote to other contractors, they all said that they simply didn't understand the price and could never to the job at that cost. I hesitated for a bit wondering why Jeff's estimate was so low, thinking maybe his materials would be cheaper. But it turns out that ALL of the contractors I talked to get their cabinet doors from the same distributor (the main distributor for Southern California). So I called Jeff, and work began.
Kim, Jeff, and Jeff's sister all showed up on the first day of work. They were kind and professional. I knew I could trust them to treat my home with respect when I wasn't around. Any surprises that came up during the course of the project were always communicated to me. Part way through the work, I asked to add a few things and these guys integrated them smoothly. They are also fantastic at overcoming issues and oddities that always come up with remodel jobs. Kim simply looks at the issue and presents an elegant solution in seconds!
When the work was finished and I got the bill, I was pleased to see that it was for exactly what they quoted me. No added charges for any of the silly oddities that they had to work around. Both Kim and Jeff told me that if there were any issues in the future with the work, to call them. I took them at their word and they never disappointed! As we started using the new kitchen over the following weeks, I would notice that a self-closing drawer would make a sound, or two cabinet doors were touching as they close -- all really minor things that can come up as the wood adjusts to the climate and things settle into place. I simply called Jeff (and yes, he would still answer the phone, even though the project was done and paid for!), and either he or Kim would come out and make the adjustments needed!
I really can't say enough wonderful things about these guys and our about or experience with them.
As a side note, Kim Sand has many years of experience as a general contractor. He's actually quite magical when it comes to fixing things. He installed all of our appliances, as well as all of the fixtures and plumbing after the granite counters were in place. He also fixed many random things around our home when we moved in. He will assess any situation and give you an honest opinion as to the best, most cost-effective way to go about fixing it. -

Sloppy from start to finish...
- Dude forgot his measuring tape on cabinet measuring day
- Randomly addressed a couple invoices to "Robert" (not what my momma named me)
- Installation delayed a week due to mis-estimation of cabinet shipment date
- After job was done, I noticed a couple new scratches on my hardwood floors, and two of the cabinet doors are slightly crooked.
The cabinet work otherwise looked good and the guys are nice enough people. But absent-minded.Comment from Jeff S. of Kim Sand Installations 6/20/2010
I did write 'Robert' on one invoice and when it was brought… More » -

Bought a new built-in wall microwave + oven set, but had a hard time finding an installer. The first option was Sears, which would have been $180 + tax, but our unit is an older place and they wouldn't do any cabinetry work, if any was needed. There were some general handymen we found who charged anywhere from $200-$300 for the job, but others didn't have enough manpower to install.
With a last ditch effort, I found Kim Sand's website online. He specializes in kitchen work and specifically mentioned built-in appliances, so I figured it'd be worth a shot. Not only did he have domain expertise, his price was cheaper than any of our other options.
He was flexible to work with our schedule to come on a weekend and started by carefully removing and hauling out the old unit. Turns out, the new unit was slightly bigger and required some cabinet modification. He assessed the situation, explained the work, and set it all up in about an hour. There wasn't an extra charge for the minor cabinet work, and I'm definitely glad we got someone who's done this many times at a great price. Definitely give him a call if you need some appliance installation!
