In the tradition of varying up my hundredth reviews, and realizing the significance of its closure, I decided to drop my original idea for review #300, and dedicate it to the recently closed Kiddieland. For anyone in my generation, this(and arguably also the former Santa's Village, as I had fond memories there too) were easily equivalent in significance to what Riverview Park in Chicago had to have been to an older generation of Chicagoians, until its closure in the 1960s. Though I am today more into adult-like rides at amusement parks(and many of the rides here aren't my cup of tea, plus my taste in rides has obviously changed over time), I'll always hold an appreciation for places like this. And of course, they do a great job of bringing back fun memories I had at similar places long ago, even if the owners purposely designed their rides to appeal to children.

As I was sad I never got a last chance to go to Santa's Village before its closure a few years ago, it was good in contrast that myself and a few others successfully made a final trip here. I'll admit I had a very marginal preference for Santa's Village as a kid, but also enjoyed going here nearly as much. While I wish I had arrived slightly earlier to take in more of the park, I still was able to at least go on most rides I wanted to do one last time, such as the Little Dipper, Galleon, Dip 'n Drop, German Carousel, and the Race-a-bouts to name a few. The Polyp strangely wasn't open, the day I went. Appreciated that their concessions didn't excessively gouge patrons(and as noted in my Great America review), and that soda was free. And finally, it was so sad that my group barely missed getting on the last Kiddieland Limited train of the night(easily one of my fav things here by far), before the park closed.

So depressing that a family dispute forced the closure of this park, and I'm afraid to find out what sorta development will replace this landmark. I just hope the majority(if not all) of its rides end up getting a deserved second life in other amusement parks, especially the beautiful German Carousel!

I am writing this as a tribute to the many childhood summers I had here with my now dearly departed grandfather. They have antique rides here and it was for many children the first time they went on a "real rollercoaster". The smell of gasoline will forever remind me of the train. And while melrose park isn't far from Northbrook (where I grew up) as a child it seemed like an eternity away as I was always so excited to go there. This was truely a part of my childhood and I am really, really sad that it is going away. I am planning a final trip good bye (and to take some pics) on their final weekend. I also will be riding the rollercoaster one last time!

Goodbye Kiddieland. You will always be a part of my memories.

I've got to give Kiddieland in Melrose Park, its proper due now that the doors have been closed. Sad to say, after 81 years in business, Kiddieland has been laid to rest.  I'm sure going to miss the gorgeous and huge neon Kiddieland sign at 1st and North Ave. It's a masterpiece!
We had our last hurrah at Kiddieland on September 27, 2009 and the day couldn't have been nicer. Not a cloud in the sky and the crowd of over 5,000 actually made the day that much more fun. Everyone was friendly and courteous.
Yes, the lines were longer than usual for the Little Dipper and the Log Flume, but well worth the wait. I grew up coming to Kiddieland and brought my own kids throughout the 80's and 90's. Because I have a 5 year old now, I had to make sure to bring her there twice this season. She LOVED it. so much and wishes she could go back. Many of the rides are the same I rode on as a child. She loved them all!

A huge plus is how nice it was to not being bombarded with licensed characters and letting the rides stand on their own. Fun is fun! No need to tie-in with merchandising at Kiddieland! It was a nice change of pace.
We've had many fun times there since the 60's. I'm just sad that I won't be able to go back. The Little Dipper was a huge thrill for us and just walking around the grounds and seeing things had very much remained the same but kept very well maintained was a delight. as well.
I'm going to miss that fabulous German Carousel with the light blue deco rockets,  bright orange magnificent convertible, racecars, Kiddieland bus and firetruck, EVERYTHING. That ride is a work of art!
If I were rich, I'd be starting up a new amusement park. I hope someone of good character buys it and opens it up nearby. How about the property where Santa's Village used to sit? That would be an awesome place for the new Kiddieland!

I am as sad to see this go as much as I was sad to see The Bozo Show taken off the air.  It just seems that my childhood becomes more distant at a faster pace.   There will never be bumper cars like the ones at Kiddieland ever again.   Great park that provided a great service to the community.

The greatest fuckin place ever!!!!!!!

how do they keep those rides so pristine?  how do they make everything seem so nostalgic even if it was my first trip?  how did i not vomit all over everything once i got off the scrambler?

i loved every minute of watching my kids (3 and 5) have their minds blown with excitement and wonder.

I won't be crying over this place being gone, but present and future kids that hear about this place will. If the family which owns this place can't get along, they have a right to move on. Tough, make way for progress, highest and best use. You want to be sentimental, it is understandable. This is a free country for hopefully a few more years, start your own damn amusement park if you are so upset Mr. Big Talker and see how easy and profitable it is to run one.

Is there anything really special about this place? A number of rides for little kids that goes way beyond what might be found at a decent carnival, local fest. Then you have the old school roller coaster, log run, nostalgic train that goes around the property, two person water tube ride that doesn't require a bathing suit and Volcano Mt. for climbing, sliding and a self-powered rail ride around it. Ok, throw in a few more carnival rides for the tweens.

What we are losing with its passing? Those simpler days, a more family oriented amusement park, that neon sign, free soda drinks, certainly a heck of a lot cheaper than going to a regular carnival and a drastically shorter distance than driving to an unGreatful America.

Bottom line, it won't be as awesome to be a kid and parent anymore in Chicagoland.

There are a lot of things that I love about Chicago.  I especially have a fondness for the places that have been shared by generations of Chicago families.  Kiddieland is one of those places. It is geared towards pre-teen children.  Recently, my girlfriend and I brought her nieces to Kiddieland on one of it's last Saturdays ever.
Once inside the gates, the financial news and political arguments that had previously filled my mind was replaced by families of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds smiling at the sight of the their children's happiness.   Kids screamed and laughed while playing on the carnival type rides while their families stood by the gates taking photos.  There are rides for children of all ages.  There are even a few rides that adults can enjoy!  But most of all it's a place where kids are free to run completely wild, drink all the free soda they can handle, fill their bellies with junk food and most importantly crash when they get home.
The last ride of the day was actually one of my favorites.  An ancient carousel.  It was covered in amazing craft-full ornate paintings.  The wooden horses showed wear from 61 years of children playing on them.  You really got the feeling that kids who once rode the carousel eventually took their children to kiddieland to ride the carousel. As their children did the same.  It was heartbreaking to know that it will no longer exist to bring joy and memories to Chicagoland families.  Kiddieland will be greatly missed.

I'm not a big fan of amusement parks and would snub the idea of dragging my toddler to Great America, but Kiddieland, tailored especially for toddlers, is a brilliant idea. It's even better that I don't have to go on an hour's journey to get there.

We finally went this weekend, and what a ball my 2 and a 1/2 year old had! It was his first taste of a waterslide and rollercoster and all those rides I grew up with. It was a perfect weather day; not too hot/humid with a good breeze. It was a comfortable crowd as well so we weren't spending most of our time standing in lines. After about four hours, we'd done about every ride there was, and I did all of the screaming! Surprisingly, my tot never got scared on anything. I was the one on the ferris wheel with my eyes shut. I also like that I could get on most of the rides with him.

By the end of the day, I had had about all the motion I could stand. Nevertheless, it was a fun time, and I'm sad to hear that they'll be closing this Sept. due to family feuding. Glad I got to partake!

This is just as nice of a place to take your kids as six flags, there's just less to do as an adult. Mostly because the vast majority of the rides you won't fit in properly once you grow a certain amount. They have a really calm roller coaster with no loops for all ages made of wood. It's old, almost scary hehe.

Also they do have some quicker speeding rides. I stand my ground when I say they have the best midway games out of all the Midwest theme parks. I hope Kiddieland never goes out of business because I'm in love with the nostalgia it brings thinking of it. I'd love to bring my kids etc. there as long as I can :)

Halloween is a great time to bring your kids. Make sure to dress up! Pumpkin picking, hay rides, costumes and rides. Probably the best time to visit.

We went on a day when it was totally empty. That was just fantastic. The weather was cold and windy, that is why it was empty. When it's empty, there is no line for any ride, and this is truly the way to do amusement parks if possible. I could not tolerate an amusement park for very long on a hot and crowded day.

My kids are 2, 4, and 1 month. So, the 2 year old was scared on some rides but many were just perfect for him. The 4 year old went on every single ride and loved all of them. The log ride was the scariest for him. Then, after that, the dropping ride. We were there for 4 hours and it felt like 1 hour. They had the best time ever. It was worth 65$ for us all to get in. The free drinks give us a sugar fix and we only spent about 10$ on food (popcorn and ice cream). The roller coaster was just so fun, and very nice and short.  The rides seem very well maintained and clean, even though they are very old. The staff are so friendly and helpful, and really seem to enjoy being around little kids. They helped them on and off the rides very lovingly and really watched to make sure everyone stayed in their seats, was strapped in properly, etc.

This park is for very little kids. I can't fit my butt on many of the rides. I wouldn't really take them if they were older than 7.

This is the final year. An amusement park that is really geared for the little ones. No smelly teenagers hanging in groups running rampant throughout. This is for the kids ages 2 to 12. Sadly this is the last year of business and then it will be gone. Farewell Kiddieland and thanks for all those memories.

Its a great place for kids and its a part of Chicago history. It needs serious updating which is probably one of the reasons they are shutting their doors for good. The lines weren't terrible but the place does get pretty crowded around 2pm.

Oh crap, do I love Kiddleland! It's small and manageable with small kids and strollers... One of the best parts is NO TEENAGERS! It is totally geared toward smaller kids... probably up to about 10 or so... there are little little kids rides and then a few for the more brave kids.... even a few I can not get on (too much spinning for my liquid center). I have taken my kids there for the past 8 years. I AM HEARTBROKEN THAT THIS IS THE LAST SUMMER. They announced that they were selling it off in Sept '09. I sure hope someone comes along and is able to buy it and keep it running... it is an amazing Chicago tradition... the kind you just can't get back when it's gone. PLEASE DON'T LET IT BE ANOTHER RIVERSIDE... knocked down for a stupid grocery store or Walmart or parking lot! PLEASE KEEP IT ALIVE!!

What a throw-back!  And a great one at that.  Yes, the rides are old - REALLY old - but that's the charm of them.  "They don't make 'em like they used to" applies here in a big way.  They certainly don't design them this way anymore.  I mean, when was the last time you went to a theme park and weren't overwhelmed with licensed branding?  This place is about the kids and the fun...not about selling more products.

That said, all the rides seem really well-maintained.  Those occasional park and street carnivals that are so prevalent in Chicago - set-up, run and "maintained" by a pack of unwashed carnies that always seem to be in some stage of drunkenness or hungover - scare me a hell of a lot more.  Why would anyone go to places like that when there's a place like this available all summer???

Kiddieland is the perfect under-10 primer for places like Great America.  It's small, the rides are tame (only a few are better for ages 6 and up), a parent can accompany a young child on most of them (and, with some height-restrictions, have to on some of them), it's relatively clean and the staff is surprisingly friendly.  On weekdays the lines are short if not non-existent.  My 2-year-old LOVED it.  Ellen M.'s 4 and 8 year-olds seemed to as well.

Entry is $23 for adults and $20 for children 3-5 before 5pm, $3 less after 5pm.  This seemed a little steep to me until I noticed that children under 3 are free, you can get $3-off coupons at Jewel and beverages are FREE!  What a nice touch, especially on a hot day!  And how refreshing to not spend an arm-and-a-leg to get in, only to be nickel-and-dimed-to-death on consumables while inside.

To all of of the reviewers that say this place is gonna close at the end of this year (or in a couple years), word in the "Land" is that they've been saying this EVERY year...for years!

Just went here and was disappointed by the lack of service.  This is NOT Disney, and I didn't expect that kind of service.  I just expected the line to buy the tickets to MOVE along instead of being at a standstill for sooooooo long.  I tried to buy tickets off the internet.  They promised "no waiting in line" but I couldn't get it to work.  So I got there 5 minutes after it opened and waited in line for 15 minutes.  That doesn't seem long to you or me, but it's an eternity for kids!

This place is great for kids 12 and under.  If they are older, they are just too cool to be here.  There's a section of the park for toddlers which has all those carnival rides like the cars you sit in and they go around in a circle.  THEY DO HAVE HEIGHT REQUIREMENTS, SO READ UP ON THAT BEFORE YOU GO.

About the Toddler section....we had a problem here on the little roller coaster.  Just because it's small and a short ride doesn't mean it won't scare little ones.  Also, if you have a group of 3 adults and 8 little kids, THEY CAN'T ALL GO ON THE RIDE AT THE SAME TIME!  You have to take 1 kid with 1 adult.  It's not rocket science people, but that help up the line for some time while it was explained.  I was wondering what possessed them to make the trip in the first place since many of the kids couldn't even go on the rides, but what do I, mother of 4 kids know?

The section with the rides for the bigger kids had many rides that didn't open until about 1 hour after the park opened.  They had the log flume ride, bumper cars, the swinging boat, the scrambler and a few other things.  Once again, they are very strict on the height requirements.  Do you get my point?

The crowd here is kind of rough and the parents are kind of pushy in line.  They don't get the height requirements, or maybe they can't read the sign.  We had several instances of the kid being too short and the parent being pissed off.  I had people trying to cut in line on several rides and even at the free soda place.  Great lesson you're teaching the kids here!

But if you don't want to trek to Great America, this is a good stop.  The train ride is a hit and it's worth all the effort just to see their smile after riding on it!

This is a nostalgic place.  You relive your childhood of riding the kiddieland express train around the park, chasing down your dad in a bumper car, and playing skeetball for what seemed like hours so that you could win enough tickets to get a cheap plastic toy that was worth all of 50 cents.  This might be the place you first rode a carousel or a ferris wheel.

This was the case for me, and for some reason I had forgotten all about this place until today.  My soon to be 3 year old was probably a little too small for some of the rides, despite the fact he was tall enough.  They were just a little too fast for him.  But he did love that ride around park on the train, which was a treat - except for the part where we rode in the parking lot right alongside traffic on 1st avenue, with only a measly guardrail separating us!!

It was refreshing though, this was old fashioned fun.  No inflatables or Disney characters here.  Just rickety old rides that you probably shouldn't feel safe on, but do.  And friendly employees who still manage a smile as they give you the obigatory wave as you ride by on the train.

Free soft drinks help make up for the somewhat hefty entrance fees.  You can get $3 off coupons at Jewel.  Food is your typical park fair.  And the crowd?  Let's just say that I was really very surprised and hadn't expected all the yuppies.  I had heard the rumors that the park crowd had gotten pretty bad over the years, but it just wasn't the case on this weekday.

OOOOOh- kiddieland is so great.  I love that you pay one price to get in and can ride all the rides over and over.

My daughter was 3 1/2 this past summer when we went there, and she keeps bringing it up.  She LOVED the place and din't want to leave.

I loved it because it was cheesy, old-school carnival feeling. It's small enough to feel like you have a handle omn the place, but large enough to not be boring.  yee-ha

KIDDIELAND! I still love this place. we have got to get there this season, because they are closing. Big bummer, my kids love this place! Whenever we've gone, there is little to no wait for rides and my kids leave here happy and in return, so are we. I love to see my kids having fun (unlike the BORING time they had at Schaumburg Lego-sux-Land), and it feels like the money you spend is well worth it. Perfect rides for kids around 10 and under and a few rides adults can go on, (water rides and ferris wheel). I guess after this year they'd probably be too old anyway to go here, but I went here as a kid and I am happy I got to take my kids as well. I will always have great memeories of this place!

I am so very sad that Kiddieland is closing:'(( I'm 54 and have countless memories of going there with my family and separately with my Opa (Grandpa). I still remember remember the ponies that used to be there, little tractors, the train!, boats, merry-go-round, roller coaster, Ferris wheel, etc. Such good memories. Unfortunately I was never able to return to the Chicago area and take my two boys there. It's so sad to see one more childhood memory disappear. It was a great family place, after all not everyone can afford Disney or even Six Flags! We passed Kiddieland every Sunday on the way from Broadview to my Omie & Opa's house on the North side. Funny how you remember childhood things years later but can't remember how to drive to somewhere you went two weeks ago. lol. I remember passing Prince Crossing Stables, Maywood Park (where I eagerly hoped some of the horses had their heads out their stall doors) and Kiddieland with that great sign. They'll probably sell everything off and I would love that sign but it'll go for WAY over my financial abilities. GOODBYE KIDDIELAND, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

We love this place.

On weekdays in the summer it's never been packed.  The rides are perfect for the 10 and under set.  The park is clean.  Even the bathrooms - clean.  Free soda pop!  The food is reasonably priced.   Nowhere near Great America prices.  There are loads of rides for smallish kids - say 2 - 5 and there is plenty to do for the bigger kids.

Jewel usually has coupons at the beginning of the season for $3 or so off admission.

This place gets 5 stars for nostalgia, fun & value.

Update 5/5/08
We went yesterday.  We were like VIPs - walked right on every ride.  We had coupons from Chicago Family magazine for $6 off per ticket (good until Memorial Day).  We had to drag the kids away - they must have ridden the Galleon (swinging boat ride) and the Little Dipper about 20 times each.  This is definately the park to go to if your kids are say, 10 and under, and you dislike waiting in long lines.  I have never run into a rude or surly park attendant - where do they find all of those polite teenagers?

Good old Kiddieland... one of the places I used to frequent when I was much younger.  I would go as far as claiming that Kiddieland is Chicago's own version of Moscow's Gorky Park (minus Burhan mockup, but on the other hand, much better maintained than Gorky).

Kiddieland is like Six Flags, except it is much cheaper, has less advertising, doesn't have the water park, and the rides are best suited for young kids or people who hate fast roller coasters or other thrill rides.

I'll skip listing pros / cons about this place, as I would be repeating previous reviews.  Overall, I would recommend this place.

A slight note about ride safety:  Other than a bit of rope burn from the safety restraints in the bumper cars, I've never had an issue at this park.  Generally, as long as you / your child uses common sense, everyone will have a safe and fun time.  Also, the rides here appear to be safer than some of the rides at Great America due to the fact that most of the rides are significantly slower and not designed to subject riders to significant changes in g-forces.

First let's concede the obvious negatives:
-It lacks the glitzy new rides of national chain amusement parks (i.e. Great America.)  It
-I've had better pizza in the public schools
-It would lose it's attraction for most kids over age 10.
-At one point I thought the North American Camel Toe Association was in town (I know, that's mean but it's true!)

Now then, let me say that the positives totally outweigh the negatives.  To note a few:
+ The price was right:  $35 for me and my 5 yr old with a coupon from Jewel.  We spent about another $12 for food for the entire day.  Water fountains were easily found, as were the free pop dispensers.
+ The lack of licensing tie-ins was noted and appreciated.  It was nice to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl as opposed to the "Dora the Explorer Tilt-a-Whirl."  There's only so much Sponge Bob I can take.  Despite what you may think, kids don't give a crap as long as it's fun.
+ The lines moved quickly.  5-10 minutes at most.
+ Truth is, the people there were very friendly.  Because of the younger demographic, you eliminate the asshole teenage crowd (I know, I was one of them years ago.)  They have moved on to other pursuits leaving a truly family friendly park.
+ I love the "vintage charm" the place offers.  I feel like I stepped back in time to a simpler era.  And I never once was concerned about the safety of the rides--they are classic designs and very well maintained.

Bottom line, for what it is, you can't beat it.  We will definitely be back

The site of countless happy childhood memories.  No joke.  In the grand scheme of amusement parks these days, it probably only compares favorably to your annual parish carnival, but back in the day, Kiddieland had it all over Dispensa's Kiddie Kingdom.  If you had asked me back then, I would have taken it over Santa's Village, too.  My mom still has a picture of me sitting on the floor of our florida room wearing my cowboy hat with "Kiddieland" embroidered in loopy script across the front.

In fact, I think they are the very same ones I rode on back in the stone ages when I was a tot! This place is geared to the younger crowd, but not so sure I would feel safe putting my kids on such rickety old rides.

Go here before it closes!

A nice friendly place to take younger children without all the commercial excess of Great America.  At Great America, you feel like they're trying to raid your wallet at every turn.  Not here.  You pay what it costs to get in, then the soda drinks are free, the food is reasonably priced and reasonable quality, the rides have short waits, the staff is friendly and pleasant.  And the arcade is hidden well enough that my kids haven't noticed it yet.

About the rides - they call it Kiddieland for a reason.  Kids above a certain age will say "BO-RING".  But for preschoolers through maybe 5th grade you should be having a great time.  The roller coaster is short but rickety.  The train ride cliche but cute.  And the pirate ship might just make your adult stomach turn.  When my daughter was three I couldn't get her off it.

And this place beats the pants off the toddler area at Great America.

In fact, for a young couple, this would be an interesting first date.  Its probably the closest thing we have to a Boardwalk.   We like going on Friday nights in the summer, the admission is a little less, you don't have the sun beating down on you, etc.

If you have smaller kids and haven't taken them here, you need to have your head examined.  Sadly, people from my area shun the place.  I think the Highland Park crowd is too snotty to go to Melrose Park for the day.  They just don't get it.

Be warned - this place will be closing in a couple of years.  There will not be another place like it.

Went here when I was a kid , had fond memories , so I brought my kid. I don't know if everything else just got way cooler , or if I elevated the status of this place in my memory, but it is way lamer than I remember. I could not in clear conscience bring a child older than 7 here, It is catered way more to younger kids. There is a smaller but still decent coaster , and a few other solid rides, but for the most part , it's seen it's better days. Still liked the little train , and the bumper cars are always a favorite, but that's it. I can't rip this place , but know what you're getting yourself into before you come here. No kids over 7 , or you are gonna hear some complaints.

When I was just a little rock and roll mama, and my mom would mention the name Kiddieland, you could hear my squeals of delight for miles!  This place used to bring me great joy, and all these years later, it still does.  It's not the biggest or the best, but it's a classic with so much history.  Fun rides, cool games, and the best cotton candy around.  I still get a kick out of that little train that takes you around the park.  So much fun!

I remember coming here in my childhood.  It hasn't changed much, I'm glad to say.  On a recent visit I got behind the wheels of the bumper cars and went on the Tilt a Whirl and a few other rides.  A good place to try your hand at a few carnival games and win a stuffed animal.  I try to visit at least once each summer.  Thumbs up!

Here's another review that state the obvious, Kiddieland is a blast from the past. It's really an awesome destination if you have a kid or more under the age of 11. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised at the fast moving lines, the positive atmosphere, and no micro burst or other weather related problems. The only two negatives to mention are 1) they ran out of ice for the complimentary drinks and 2) There was a traffic light out that turned a 3 minute trip into 25 minutes (are we there yet?).

This is a great place not only for the kids, but for the entire family. They have a pretty low priced addmission free for all day rides and fun. The park is well kept and there's lots of neat rides here.  It's definitely a place you'll want to visit a few times throughout the summer.

I want to like this place, However, It has a really ugly crowd the last 2-3 years, The price is right as is the location, But I think it's time to put this place to rest with old Chicago, Well, This is there last year in business, The family had been fighting for years and the side that wanted to continue lost, They had a great run though.

I love kiddieland.  My three year old and five year old had a blast.  They got to brag that they rode on a real rollercoaster.  I hope they don't close. We always have a good time there.  Two new rides are open this year so I doubt they are closing soon.
