Khung Dhang is the definition of a "Thai hole in the wall" restaurant situated in a small strip mall off Topanga Boulevard. This is a very small place that serves up awesome Thai cuisine. This is a type of place you don't go to for the ambience but for the food only. I've had a few curries and rice dishes here and all have been superb. Did I mention the portions are huge? And the prices are very reasonable. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Thai Cuisine.

I'm starting to think the more obscure and hole-in-the-wall the restaurant is, the more authentic and delicious!
Coincidentally, my favorite places to eat are very sketchy looking! Haha.

This used to be owned by a super nice lady named Apple (moved to Thailand and then back to California and opened up another Khun Dang in Van Nuys).
Back then, their food was epiclicous...yes, I just fused 2 words together right now.
After it changed owners, the quality was dumbed down... and I stopped going.

It's been over 3 years or so, my mom suggested a local Thai place and mentioned this place. She knows I'm a sucker for Thai, but inside my mind, I was skeptical. (I wouldn't want her to waste lots of money on douche baggery food).
In the end, I was sexceptionally glad I gave it another shot! The food was better than I expected. (must've been a staff change or improvement)
We ordered: beef jerky, sticky and steamed rice, spicy papaya salad, spicy Tom Ka Kai soup, chinese broccoli with crispy pork, peanut sauce, coconut juice, thai iced tea, and coconut ice cream with sweet rice.
The only thing I would critique is their peanut sauce. It tasted like they added some type of sharp herb. Wasn't my favorite version.  Their coconut juice is sooo good... so is their thai tea! OH and that soup was deliciouso! (well balanced) Chinese broccoli was fresh and crisp and the pork tasted like Asian bacon! Can you say nummers?

We were having way too much fun in there... to the point that we probably looked like obnoxious buffoons that don't know how to lower our volumes. We cracked so many inappropriate jokes, Dane Cook would've been proud. The lady that worked there was pretty cool, she hopped along into our crazy train.

I remember these 2 hilarious conversations:
ME: oh can you add in the papaya salad?
LADY: yes okay. how spicy you want?
    ME: very spicy, please.
LADY: okay. oh, would you like crab in salad?
ME: oh ummmm, i don't care--oh mom, do you want crab?--
cause i remember you like em.
MOM: umm, no, no thank you. i dont really like crab.
MOM'S BFF: Mmm nu uh, cause last time she got the crabs, she
didn't like itttt very much. Way too itchy and irritating. Freakin annoying for weeks.
    {everyone starts busting up}

ME: hey sandra, want regular thai iced tea or one with the boba?
MOM'S BFF: umm i dont know, ehhh ummmmm
ME: okay. do you want balls or no balls?
MOM'S BFF: oh no! no balls please.
LADY: i tink dats the poblem, u need balls
MOM'S BFF: oh no no. no i dont
LADY: well, i tink eets alwayz gud to hab dem once in while~
    {everyone cracks up again}

ANYWAYS, whether you laughed or not, we did. SO AH HA.

Give this place a shot. Eef u no rike, den u stink.
But srsly, Im a bitchass with Asian food. this place ain't too shabby.

Lunch:   The TomKaGai soup is as usual in most thai places.
The lunch menu offers up out 20 different dishes that include soup 6. - 7$
The wonton appetizers were cold and stale.
My salad order was forgotten....   Careful when you order "medium spice" :) I love spicy,,,,, so no problem for me, but their medium is others spicy.
Overall..... good place for lunch in our area

Another day another great HITW (hole in the wall) spots in chatsworth. I was in the mood for some good Thai food and this was the way to go. I decided on the usual pri king chicken.  The wait was about 10 minutes which was fine, and the staff was friendly as always. The food was great. The size of the place is small, but between the great food and the generous portions that they serve, its a no brainer to come here to enjoy some great food.

Parking is a non issue, as this is located in a decent size lot.

What other Thai restaurant can you go to where you can get your Thai food cravings filled AND then walk off the food next door as  you peruse adult items for your after dinner fun? Khun Dang!

So no, this isn't a family friendly restaurant. I will not be taking my conservative Asian parents, who still talk to me about "adult" things in veiled Chinese proverbs, here (although that could certainly make for a great story to tell one day as I explain the lashings I received from Mom for taking her here...).

But what about the food? Well, my boyfriend had bought a Yelp deal for this place mistakenly thinking it was for the other Khun Dang (in Van Nuys). Luckily, this KD is located less than 10 minutes from home so we decided to get take out. Red Curry with chicken, pad see ew with shrimp, and beef jerky. Rice isn't complimentary so we cooked up some yummy Golden Star Jasmine rice ahead of time at home ;). I went to go pick up the food and this place is SMALL. Maybe enough seating for 10-15 ppl? The lady who owns the place is pretty nice, attentive and made sure to ask if I needed rice, hot sauce or utensils. After grabbing my food and zooming out of there (small, shady areas = time to go!) we settled in at home to try the food.

Red Curry was tasty. We asked for extra spicy so it definitely had a kick. Plenty of meat and goodness. The pad see ew needed a little more soy saucey/fish sauceyness to me but it was a big portion with lots of shrimp and gailan. The beef jerky on the other hand was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be maybe shredded beef or something but it was quite literally beef jerky. An open container of super chewy, tough jerky with some sort of spicy dipping sauce. I couldn't bite through it but the bf seemed to like it.

All in all, with the Yelp deal, this was a very good value meal. Definitely a place I'd go back to for take out but it loses points as a dine-in restaurant and for being a bit of hit or miss on the food.

(fun tidbit: The Khun Dang in Van Nuys apparently was the original owners of this Khun Dang. They moved to their larger restaurant a few years ago but people kept going to this Khun Dang. Eventually, they sold this small one off and focused on building their clientele for their Van Nuys KD. If you go to the Van Nuys KD make sure to get their yummy beef SHANK panang).

Great and speedy service!! Yes it's located right next to an adult novelty shop, but the food is great!
My advice, READ THE MENU!!! It states if it is your first time, order your food mild!! Strong precaution...
My gf and I recently tried out this place and decided, "well, we're Mexican. We'll be fine with our food being spicy..." WRONG! It became difficult to eat our entire meal! The one thing that was worth it in the end was their Coconut Ice Cream With Sweet Rice... This dessert will keep you coming back for more!!!!

We've been looking for an authentic Thai restaurant in the western San Fernando Valley for over 10 years and we think we've found it.

Khun Dang is a tiny hole in the wall spot with walls covered in 70's orange.  It is right next to a XXX Adult Store....  All things we can live with because... the food is simply delightful! We always start our meal with the pork sumai appetizer and we ask for the traditional soy sauce dip which is our preference rather than the sweet and sour sauce that they serve it with. But either sauce is good. One of our favorite dishes is the beef bbq which we've been searching for high and low, since we had it last in the 1990s.  Thai people refer to the bbq beef as Crying Tiger. You can get the bbq beef off of their lunch special for a deal. The lunch specials also come with a flavorful clear broth soup with pieces of beef and vegetables, as well as, fried wontons.  What a super great deal!

We sometimes get the thai tea with boba, except that their boba sticks together, which is a pain to drink. For those of you who don't know, boba are tapioca balls that are added to drinks and smoothies. The balls are sucked through a "boba straw" which is bigger in diameter than the average drinking straw. If you love sucking balls then this is the drink for you, but if you don't like it when your balls stick together, don't order theirs!!!

We've also tried the Dancing Shrimp, off the menu. This is a shrimp salad where the shrimp starts raw and cooks in lime juices, so, by the time it comes to your table, it's not so raw anymore. This is a spicy savory dish that is smothered in garlic and served with lettuce leaves, yum!!!!!

We go to Khun Dang at least twice a month to try new dishes. We've gotten to know Ashara, the host, and the owner is also friendly. We like how they are very eager to please. We are hoping that they will come up with an official catering menu as we would genuinely consider them for catering our next party.

Nestled in a not-so-great looking part of Chatsworth is this gem. I was visiting another office for work with my boss and VP and the VP recommended this place. It's right next to an adult video store which makes you go "hmm" but don't be dissuaded by that. I've had a lot of curry in the past year and this place's green curry was by far my favorite! The perfect amount of spice and flavor.

I think this would be a better place for lunch since everything for dinner is a la carte (even rice) but it was still very affordable either way. I'm not sure they have a/c so it can get kind of warm inside during the summer but the curry is so good, it's well worth it!

2.5 stars so I will round it to 3.

I'm sorry but I have experienced better.

My coworkers and I ordered from here because it was the first thing to pop up that wasn't our normal (Chinese or pizza) and we decided to give it a try. The person I ordered from was really great! She was polite and careful to make sure all of the orders were correct. Great customer service.

We decided to try their delivery service and that's when things started to go down hill. The delivery took almost 20 minutes longer then they said it would take which was unfortunate since we were all starving! I even had to call to verify that the order was on the way.

The food was OK. All of my coworkers were disappointed. The noodles were too greasy. The kabobs were bland and the fried rice was close to flavorless. I was really sad to hear all this since my little order of dumplings was something I liked.

Sadly I don't think my co workers will be coming back but I might try it again someday.

Really good food and they make it just as spicy as you want it. I love little holes in the wall like this- they're like hidden gems. Thanks to yelp I've discovered another fave Thai place.   Yeaaa.

I love how everything is pink and how it's run by a cute little couple (reminds me of another great place called Uppercrust in Northridge) anyway  bomb Thai Iced Tea, bomb yellow curry- and I didn't get to try anything else yet.  I will be going back often.

    Thanks Yelpers!

I've been frequenting Khun Dang for years since its right in my 'hood and it is most definitely my preferred Thai-on-the-go in Chatsworth. Service is always quick, the lady who owns the place is always nice, the food always tastes excellent and authentic and it's all reasonably priced. Its a win all-around!

I highly recommend the pineapple and yellow curries, spicy eggplant, shrimp salad and taro ice cream for dessert. :)

One part quaint, neighborhood family eatery and one part Thai oasis is how I'd best describe Khun Dang Thai restaurant. Located in a small strip mall on Topanga Cyn. Blvd. in Chatsworth and sandwiched between a Nail Salon and a Adult Novelty store, this small authentic Thai restaurant serves delicous and authentic Thai classics together with local charm and caring attention to detail and service. It's small size with just 8 tables betrays the wonderful bold flavors that set it over and above most other Thai food choices in the San Fernando Valley. We stopped by on Saturday 6/18/11 for Lunch and enjoyed sharing the following meal:

    Appetizers:

Thai Omelette w/ Ground Pork - My favorie dish of the day. I knew I had to order this the moment I saw it. Ground pork, bell pepper, onion, peas, tomatoes wrapped in egg and served oddly enough with a side of ketchup. I love eggs and anything with pork, eggs and curry can't go miss with me. You have to try this.

Shrimp  & VegetableTempura  - Though not a Thai dish, my wife always orders this plate to start with at whatever Asian restaurant we go to and she was grateful to see this included on the menu. The end result was perfectly crispy without being greasy or heavy.  This was served with a sweet ? sauce.

    Entrees:

Beef Larb w/ Sticky Rice - Traditiional grilled Thai ground meat salad w/ tripe, rice powder, onions, chilis, spicy lime juice and paired with a side of crisp fresh cabbage and sticky rice. Tangy, spicy and refreshing with mutiple contrasting layers and textures. Awesome!

Chicken & Beef Satae - This is my wifes go to dish at most Thai places as she can't handle spicy curries and she loved this one. The chicken and beef skewers were of high quality and perfectly cooked with just a hint of spice and served with peanut sauce and a small cucumber salad.

    Sides:

Steamed & Sticky Rice - Cooked perfectly and served with our entree choices.

    Desserts:

Thai Halo Halo w/ Coconut Ice Cream - This was a nice treat for my daughter & I to share with coconut ice cream, coconut gel, toddy palm seed & palm seed with shave ice & colored pink
(my 4 yr old daughters favorite color.)

Fresh Mango w/ Sweet Sticky Rice - Simple Thai classic dessert that never grows old. The mango was just perfectly ripe and the sticky rice was sweet and warm.

Overall a wonderful & delicious meal that did not disappoint.

    Service:
Our waitress Ashara was kind, attentive, efficent and made helpful suggestions as to what to best order and made several off menu substitions to meet our picky little group of eaters.

We'll sure be back to Khun Dang the next time we crave Thai curries and bold flavors . With a relaxed, uncrowded and inviting environment along with caring service you can't go wrong.

Khun Dang is a tiny (and when I say tiny, I mean TINY), hole in the wall restaurant with 7 tables. It is definitely not a place to take a group, unless you are renting the place out. The service is very quick and the quality of food is great.

It would be safe to say that this is some of the best Thai food I have ever had. My coworker and I were in and out in about 30 minutes- definitely lunch break friendly!

    We ordered:

Mee Krob - So so so good. The sweet sauce was perfect!

Chicken Satay - The peanut sauce was to die for and the chicken was perfectly cooked.

Chicken Larb - Very rich with lemongrass flavor. It was really flavorful.

Soup - they gave us each a bowl of soup with tofu, vegetables and ground chicken. It was very tasty.

Chow mein Lunch special - My coworker had this and she said it was really great. The veggies were very fresh and they use all white meat chicken (always a plus).

We found our new Thai place! The prices are really good and we will absolutely be back!

Even if you don't want an of that other stuff give this little hole in the wall a chance. The service is impeccable, the customers are well behaved ( this is the Valley after all...) and the food is served promptly. Also, super tasty.

My mom & I shared the green curry lunch special w/ fried tofu substituted for the chicken, it was so fresh & delicious tasting. After eating Thai I usually get crazy thirsty, but I still feel great.
They even made special vegetarian soup for me!
We also had a young coconut drink, sweet & delicious (I think they added sugar...?).
Then we had the coconut ice cream on sweet rice, wasn't my thing, but my mom LOVED it.

They seemed to have changed owners, which I'm happy about. They had two ladies before that were pretty grumpy but now they have a different lady who is cheery and provides great service. The food has always been great but can be a little inconsistent at times. The thai iced tea and coffee are perfect here. The mango and sticky rice dessert is always great. The yellow curry is one of my favorites but sometimes it can be a little watery and not enough flavor but overall its great 90% of the time. I think this is definitely the best place in the west valley to get Thai food.
It is a tiny hole in the wall but those are usually the best places.

The hospitality here is awesome! The first time I went the guy actually waited for me to finish what I was chewing before he approached the table. At first I was wondering what he was doing standing 4 feet away...I was like come on dude don't be shy lol

The food here is just as great! The Seafood delight/mix is excellent! The portion is what I expect for the price. The Pork Jerky is nothing like I've had before...well I haven't had it before, but the texture was perfect! Shrimp fried rice was good too!

Make sure to ask for some Jasmine tea!

As far as the place goes its pretty small, and nothing fancy...don't bring a first date here.

Tiny restaurant, BIG flavor. Homestyle Thai food at it's best. The lady who runs the place always has a smile on her face, cracks jokes with you and the food comes out quick and fresh.

    Highlights here:

spicy catfish- deep fried and crispy. I would ask for the sauce on the side or else the sauce poured over just doesn't seem like enough. the sauce has fresh green peppercorns that give a nice spicy bite.

pad see ewe- noodles are not too dry, not too greasy. the right amount of saltiness with a sweet undertone and a slightly bitter bite from the chinese broccoli.

crab fried rice or rice noodles with crabmeat. great portions!

pork jerky- a generous amount of sweet and salty strips of pork perfectly dried, tender and just chewy enough served with a vinegar-like spicy sauce.

spicy mint leaves with bamboo shoots- your choice of meat however I prefer beef. the bamboo shoots are fresh and crunchy, mint is a refreshing contrast to the spice but not overpowering in the dish.

I frequent this place about every week or every other week and try to have at least ONE new dish each time I go because I cant go and not have my favorites. I would order all spicy dishes "medium" not too hot, just right.

    Love this little gem

This place is literally a minute away from me. This means if I get out of my house and walk to the front door of the restaurant, I will probably be there in less than a minute. With this said, I am surprised it took me 5 months to try this place out. I am still new to Chatsworth so I am still trying to figure out my new favorite spots.
This restaurant is tiny..like reallly small...and sandwiched between a medical marijuana clinic/ porn shop and a nail salon. It is Chatsworth after all. Hahaha
Anyway...I went in today and placed an order to go. Now I like Thai Food, but i also like to keep it simple with something like Pad Thai. In fact, there are only a few things I usually order when i eat Thai...pad thai, fried wontons, fried rice, and some fishy soup that I tried once. This experience was no different, as I ordered the pad thai with fried wontons. I was not necessarily in the mood for fried wontons but they had a $15 minimum and my pad thai was only going to cost me $10. So I ordered and waited. She quoted me 15 minutes but it was ready quicker. The lady at the counter was extremely nice and seemed very concerned with her customers. Even if the food wasn't the best Thai food that I had ever tasted, I knew I would come back because of the service and the fact that it is so close to my house. When I mentioned it was my first time ordering and that I had found them on Yelp, their other patrons began telling me just how great their food was.
And they were right. I came home and feasted and the food was pretty damn good. I loved the pad thai and the portions were very generous. There were 7 pieces of shrimp in my food. 7 PIECES!! Usually I am used to 4 or 5, but 7?!? Wish I could give them 7 stars. Haha. Good food, will be returning sooner than I thought.

I am kind of a Thai food snob. I used to live in Thai Town in Hollywood and I have had some of the best Thai food in L.A. With that, this place is amazing. I have been coming to this place for a while and I have had numerous items and everything there is delicious. My favorites are their beef jerky (make you wanna slap yo Mama), angel wings, chicken satay, and I love their curries. Also they are really clean and I trust their food. So with all that said, I love this place! The best thai food I've had in the Valley

The girls and I had a hankering for some good Thai food so after reading Yelp reviews we decided to give this quaint little place a try.
We had already tried 5 of the other top ranking Yelp reviewed valley Thai places and so far this is our favorite for the dishes we usually get.

First let me say that the lady that served us I believe her to be the owner is very nice a accommodating.
We ordered the Tom Ka Kai soup which was delish best we've had to date. Also got the Pad Thai the veggies were very fresh with just the right amount of spice.
We also tried the Green Curry with the most tender chicken very yummy! and the Beef Pa-Nang which was good but were going to have her change the sauce up a bit for us the next time.

You gotta approach this place with the right mentality. It's not some place you bring a date for a special dinner. And I probably wouldn't bring the family here for an ethnic meal (space is kinda small). But seeing that it is near large business parks and delivers... its a great place for a work lunch or to get out of the office for a bit.

I eat here almost once a week, maybe more some weeks. And I just love the food. I love spicy food. I don't know much about native Thai cooking never having been there, but I have explored my fair share of Thai restaurants in the states, and this one ranks pretty decently. The dishes seem to be a bit more on the simplistic side, but I love the Pad Ka Prow, w/ ground pork, very spicy, and fried egg. L21. Yes I have it memorized. Make sure to ask for extra fish sauce, it just brings out so much more flavor on the dish.

I'm giving the place a four based on the quality of the service. I've never given my name in the restaurant but when I call in, they know exactly who I am (That-crazy-Asian-that-always-orders-L21-and-pays- with-a-credit-card) and know exactly what I want to order.

I recommend this place if you're looking for something beyond a sandwich lunch, or just enjoy a spicy meal before those afternoon meetings. But the joint is pretty small so I don't bring a lot of people. But they do deliver so maybe you'd want to bring the spiciness right to the office.

    ***Edit 2/16/2011***

So I recently went back to the restaurant and I noticed they put in a new paint job and hardwood floors. The place looks great from its original feel. There's a much more comforting and homey feel to it now and would definitely recommend bringing a date here for a casual dinner. The food and the service... still excellent =D

NOT the best Thai food in the valley. I ordered the Pad See Ew Beef from the lunch menu and it was only ok. It ended up being on the pricey side. Our server was very polite though.

We haven't been to Khun Dang for a few years.  The last time we ate there it was a different owner, then once the prices shot up, we stopped going.  Today,we had friends over and we thought we would give it a chance again.  WOW BIG MISTAKE!! We called at 11:10 am asking them to deliver.  They said it will take about 30 minutes.  My friends came and an hour later, still no sign of the food delivery.  We called them and they said that the delivery person left already and should be there in a few minutes.  So we waited and waited and waited.  We called again 15 minutes later, they said they will call her and see what happened and will call me back. Waited another 5 minutes and still no call back.  We called AGAIN!  They said they can't find my house and the GPS made them run around everywhere.  UHMMMM, our house has been here since 1958, every single GPS and friends who has GPS that doesn't know the directions have arrived here without any problems.  So they finally asked me the nearest cross street to our house, so we told them and they will call the delivery person.  She hung up, before we could tell them to forget the food.  So we called them yet again to tell them to forget about the food and cancel it as our friends are now leaving. Now they are saying the owner is now driving the food over.  We said no thanks, we dont want it.  Too late, she was on her way already.  So the owner finally came (1 hour, 50 minutes later), apologized and gave us the food for free.  We have free cold, stale food with no one around to eat it since everyone left already.  We would've been ok if they even TRIED to call us after being lost for 10 minutes and just ask for directions but we literally had to keep calling them every 10 minutes to find out where the food is.  We tried giving them a chance but they lost what could've been a very loyal customer as we love thai food!

I don't know if this is THE #1 Thai restaurant in the Valley, but it is very very good. Maybe the best Thai on the far west end of the Valley?! Dining area is small but you never have to wait long. Lunch in the restaurant includes a clear soup with chicken meatball and veggies. Lunch specials are a great value and there are occasionally specials listed on a dry erase board in the restaurant.  Spam fried rice being one of their excellent specials. I love love love their Beef or Pork Nam Tok and Pad Ka Prow with a fried egg on top. Parking right in front is usually a cinch.

The restaurant split off into another Khun Dang located on Sepulveda Blvd south of Roscoe. The location might be more convenient for some, food there is just as good as the original.

I have never had a bad food experience here.

I have always gone for lunch so I can't speak for the dinner experience, but for the price you cant beat it.

The Pad Prik Sod and the Pad Ka Prow are bomb .. but beware of the spiciness.  Beginners may want to ask for the medium heat level.

The one negative is that the place is tiny and if you go at 12pm, you can almost write off getting a seat.

Went here for lunch recently, and it was ok. I got chicken with spinach and peanut sauce. It was pretty good. We got soup that was pretty bland, just chicken broth with a few sad veggies floating in it, and no wonton/egg roll.

The waitress was nice, and the service was fast. This place is SUPER small.

Overall it was ok. I would eat here again, but wouldn't go out of my way to.

One of my favorite Thai restaurants in the whole valley! Definitely a mom & pop place, and that's the best thing about it. Love the service & all the dishes. Everything is very authentic, and the ingredients they use are of the highest quality. I recommend their pote ak seafood soup, squid tempura, bbq chicken, pad see ew & pad thai noodles.

Delicious food and generous portions at wonderful prices. The hubby and I eat here a couple of times a month. The food is always super fresh and very tasty. They offer the option of fresh or fried tofu in every dish and will even whip up a chicken-stock free vegetarian soup  on request with tons of fresh garlic. We always have leftovers when eat here which is especially handy during football season as a Saturday meal gives us leftovers to eat during the Sunday games.

Order the Pad Thai noodles, Panang Chicken, Yellow Curry Chicken and Mongolian Beef - all excellent and reasonably priced.

Definitely a family run business, very small (8tables, maybe).  I drove the restaurant as the online menu was not working - was in and out with the food within 15minutes :)

Recommend for a tastey experience. Last note, they only take Visa and Cash/

I've only ordered takeout from here so I'm not sure about the full sit-down experience, but the food was pretty decent. The first time I got this garlicky pepper tofu dish with a side of steamed rice that was a little underwhelming. The food was very meh (which is weird because I love garlic, pepper AND tofu, maybe too much of a good thing?)I ordered this before 3 pm so it was part of the lunch special, but the soup that is part of the special is for dine-in only! Doesen't make sense if you ask me...

However the second time really knocked my socks off. Now I was riding my bike home mind you, but even though the food was in my bike basket, it was still amazing. A tofu cashew water chestnut dish with lots of garlic and just drowning in this deliciously oily pepper sauce, I really couldn't scarf it down fast enough.

Will definetely go back again to try some of the other tofu dishes as well as my new water chestnut fave!
