they gots:
wide aisles (no bumping into fools)
organic white people food
lots o' meat
self checkout (love it!)
super nice people
everything a real grocery store should have
they don't got:
always fresh looking vege and fruit
long enough hours (they close at 9pm?)
Solid, but out of the way unless you have a car.
The BF and I go here every Sunday morning for groceries (we're old, OK?) and always find whatever we need. Acceptable organic selection, not too heavy on the polish food, nice deli workers, and they usually have enough people working the checkout to keep the lines fairly short.
Compared to the other grocery store options in the area, this Key Food is, well, key!
Walking distance from my place, but also right off McGuinness Blvd with a big parking lot for those of you with cars (although I don't know any).
True that there are better places to get produce or bread, but Key Food has a decent selection of quite of few things if you need a one stop shop.
#1 FIRST AND FOREMOST!!!
I cannot say enough about how awesome the deli staff is in this Key Food. They are some of the sweetest, nicest and funniest people on the other side of the counter and I can't for the life of me figure out why they don't have a tip cup / jar, especially because of the sandwiches, hot food prep, etc. I DEMAND A TIP CUP!
The store made roast beef is done perfectly and is to die for. Their deli sandwiches are loaded and a steal.
I love the people who work the registers. They are pretty much always cheerful and great to deal with. The rest of the store has been expanding their organic section, some of their produce is a bit pricey compared to the plethora of fruit and veggie stands in the area, and the produce guys are great too.
The aisles are spaced well, and they seem to have gotten over the **let all the teens run the store on the weekend** snafu that made it brutal to go there late last year / early this year.
ALL IN ALL, A GREAT STORE.
It is ok.
Before we discovered there's a Pathmark just 3/4 of a mile from our apartment, we started going to this Key Food because our neighborhood Fine Fare is so awful (we used to be in this neighborhood about twice/month). This store is very nice, indeed; it's clean, the selection is good and the cashiers are pleasant.
Clean, has a great abundance of items, but expensive. Weird fickle food arrangement, almost like they have an obsession with moving things around. They also have an odd way of situating certain items.
" Where are the tampons?"
" With the imported cheeses"
Next week:
" Tampons?"
" Next to the coffee"
One star off because their coffee machine never works and it's frustrating. Put an out of order sign on it already. Fairly polite staff.
I actually love grocery shopping. It suits both my left and right brains, between the sensual experiences (touching the veggies, smelling the bakery, seeing all the pretty colors) and the methodical checking off of a list.
Unfortunately, I do not love grocery shopping in Greenpoint. There are just no great options for the overall grocery experience, although there are plenty of places to stop for particular items (like homemade cookies at the Garden, rye bread at Old Poland Bakery, organic stuff at the *other* Garden near the Indian Palace...)
I am throwing 4-stars to Key Food because I wish someone had told me about it when I first moved to the neighborhood so I wouldn't have wasted time at the weird-smelling and attitudey Associated or at the just-OK C-Town. It is certainly no Fairway or Wegmans, but I think Key Food is the best that the 'hood has to offer for the one-stop-staple-buying grocery experience. Oh, and they deliver for a few extra bucks, which I think is nice because there are a lot of cute little old ladies in Greenpoint who probably make good use of that service.
Seriously, this is like the best Key Food market I've ever seen in my life! They have self-checkouts, Coinstar machines, etc. Very well organized and very comfortable place.
I've been shopping here for quite a few years since living in this vicinity of Brooklyn. They recently changed owners and I'm not sure if it's convenient or not. It seems that they are just additions to the people traffic going on in the store. They do a lot of their inventory stuff during busy shopping hours which is a huge inconvenience if you have a cart rolling around. It's a battle ground with the carts of consumers and the inventory carts of the employees.
Their produce is between bad and mediocre. It's never fresh enough. The vegetables are always bruised, soft, overgrown, etc. I always struggle with finding good fruits and veggies and because it's a large part of what I eat, I often end up going to a market to get my fresh ingredients.
The meats is also questionable. I've gotten sick far too many times from bad chicken, bad pork, or bad beef. I would never even DARE venturing towards their seafood as that too, looks suspect. When buying ground beef here, one should poke at it (I know that's terrible, but don't poke a hole!) and see if it is truly red all around. Many times I've bought ground beef from there and the entire thing would just smell awful and be all brown inside. So you ask, why do I still shop there? Well, it's the closest grocery store to my house. With my hectic schedule, I often don't have time to go elsewhere. And I only do my shopping every so often therefore I usually have my large "granny-cart" with me which is difficult enough to maneuver alone rather more with groceries in there. I have to make compromises.
For the good side, their prices are usually really fair. They always have such great sales and perfect to take advantage of for the not-so-rich Brooklyn dweller.
If they would just adjust the integrity of their fresh produce and meats, I would be more than three stars.
Decent selection of food and cooking supplies. Pretty clean and neat aisles. Easy-to-use self checkout. And, believe it or not, the music selection on the PA has at times included Feist's "1-2-3-4" and "Mushaboom", and Peter Bjorn and John's "Young Folks", along with standards like Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles".
They now have self-checkout, so I can easily avoid having to talk (or deal with) cashiers from now on! I think this is a plus because it works quite well!

I too have a love hate relationship with this store.

It is what it is: The closest thing you're going to get to a suburban supermarket in the boros that isn't named whole foods or trader joe's. The produce is OK. not especially fresh but not miserable. some gourmet stuff but really this is a place for staples and sales.
in the scheme of grocery stores, the Gpoint Key Foods is totally unremarkable. but in Greenpoint, grocery shopping is a pain in the butt. and I love grocery shopping. there are plenty of better deals on produce - organic produce is (surprisingly) cheaper at the Garden and conventional produce is cheaper (and of better quality) at J.S.S. - but as far as serving the purpose of a normal grocery store with things that normal people need, this place is leagues above C Town or Associated.
Best grocery store in Greenpoint. Great selection of regular and organic foods, decent produce and meats, friendly staff. I really wish I went here the first few years I lived in Greenpoint instead of giving my hard-earned cash to the Associated on Manhattan. My one complaint is that they, like many other NYC stores, put some produce on styrofoam platters and shrink wrap it. I never understood why they do that. Corn comes in its own protective wrapper already!
Decent grocery store. Has an alright selection of the kinds of healthy foods I like. Not enough organic fruits and veggies, but at least they're trying. I go here probably once a week because I work literally right around the corner, and it's on my way to the G train that I take to get home. I often make stops in Key Food to get some stuff to make dinner that night as it's probably the most convenient semi-large grocery store on my way home. I'm glad it's there for me when I need it, but I would never go out of my way to shop here.
Wow - an actual grocery store with a PARKING LOT. Not that I drive or anything. I was amazed to find this place when I moved to Greenpoint from the East Village, where even the "big chain" grocery stores are cramped with crappy selections. This supermarket is large and does not feel like an NYC supermarket at all. Produce is better than the other big supermarket near me (C-Town) and, I believe, cheaper but I could be wrong. I am vegetarian and I like to see a wide variety of soy products - fake deli meats, Amy's Organic, Morningstar and such - and this place has it all. You know what I get even more excited about? THEY HAVE TOMBSTONE PIZZAS. Eating Tombstone makes me think of my childhood. There aren't many places around that sell the brand so I make special trips here just to pick up a stack of these things. My arteries probably hate me, but my tummy says yum.
